Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) spring play director Tracy Wagner had a problem she needed to solve. “(I wanted) to highlight strong actors and give students who didn’t have the time to devote to ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ an opportunity to take part (in a show),” explained Wagner. To remedy the problem, she chose to present a one-act version of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” along with “Joseph.” Both plays will be presented at the school, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, by a cast of 30 students on Thursday through Saturday, March 19 through 21, at 7 p.m. A 2 p.m. matinee will be held on Sunday, March 22. “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” will open the show with a 40-minute presentation, followed by the 90-minute “Joseph.” “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” is based on the children’s book written in 1950 by C.S. Lewis. The plot revolves around the four Pevensie siblings: Lucy, played by Alexis Lenhart; Edmund, played by Xavier LeFevre; Susan, played by Maddi Lewis; and

Last year, Lancaster EMS transported more than 1,000 infants, toddlers, and school-age children in its fleet of ambulances and other vehicles. While the emergency medical service’s staff members are all credentialed to provide

sibling, opening a wardrobe to discover the fantasyland of Narnia, where it is always winter, but never Christmas. Lucy’s siblings join her on subsequent visits to Narnia and encounter mythical creatures including a White Witch, portrayed by Natalie Knox, who rules the land instead of the rightful king, Aslan the Lion, portrayed by Peyton Sheaffer. A battle, for which Wagner has brought in fight choreographer Dan Burke, ensues as the children venture with Aslan and other creatures to restore Narnia to its proper ruler. LCHS students recently became International Thespian Society Troupe 8880, and student director Aria Yang will be at the helm for “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.” Wagner noted that video projection has been added to the backdrop and that she is especially impressed with the makeup that will be used to portray the animals. “Joseph,” created by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, is a musical based on the Genesis account of Joseph, played by Kameron Garcia. The son of Jacob, played by Jim Mikulski, Joseph rises to prominence from slavery in Egypt. Narrators will include Bernadette Fertal, Katie Lyle, Sheridan Riva, and Isabelle Titzer. Pharaoh will be played by

Oliver Klemmer and Potiphar by Xavier LeFevre. The sungthrough musical is similar to a rock opera. Although the musical styles vary, from country-western and calypso to bubblegum pop and rock ’n’ roll, Wagner said that the music is not difficult. Challenges of staging the show have included the fastpaced and nearly constant choreography, including a children’s chorus of 23 made up of students from area Catholic elementary schools, and adding the special effects to make the show feel more like a rock concert. Challenges for members of the ensemble include playing multiple roles, where they have to develop their own personalities for their characters, which Wagner said really adds fun for the audience. Wagner said she had wanted to do “Joseph” for some time for several reasons. “It has a great story and theme of forgiveness,” she said. “You can really play with the quirky characters of all the brothers.” She hopes that audience members will leave feeling uplifted by the messages of both stories. “I hope they walk away singing the songs from ‘Joseph,’” she said. Readers who would like to purchase tickets to the LCHS spring plays may email tbrill@lchsyes.org or call 717509-0310.

Seven CV Matmen Qualify For Districts CV advanced seven matmen to the District Championships held at Spring Grove on February 21st and 22nd after their impressive work at the District III Section I Tournament held at Governor Mifflin on February 14th and 15th. Trent Ruble led the Buckskin cause and became the Sectional Champion in the

106-pound division, marking the 42nd individual title claimed at Sectionals by a CV wrestler in the program’s history. Ruble trekked through his bracket with a preliminary round bye, a 12-3 major decision triumph over Jalen Frederick of Cocalico, a 16-0 technical fall over Hunter Goff of Twin Valley in the semi-final round, and finally conquered Jacob Keller of Exeter Township, 5-4, in

the first-place bout to claim the title. Conrad Dillman wrestled in the 182pound division, and earned his way to the finals before succumbing to Bruce Vaughan of Wilson, 6-4, ultimately claiming second place, which was also CV’s second-best performance of the tournament. Before appearing in the final round, Dillman’s itinerary included pinning Bryce House of Cedar Crest in the quarterfinal round and besting Brian Czaus of Muhlenburg, 7-6, in the semis. An additional three CV grapplers garnered top three spots in their journey through the tournament, with a trio of third places victories from Dylan Rider (113), Keaton Fischer (126), and Josue

Marente (195). Rounding out the place winners was Jonathan Lopez at 170 and Leo Marente at 220 each taking fourth in their respect brackets, and Tyler Jordan’s sixth place at 138 pounds. In order to advance to the District Championships, the wrestlers needed to place in the top four of their brackets, meaning seven of the eight Buckskin place winners will continue deeper into the postseason. Among that group, only one athlete, L. Marente, is a senior, which speaks to the talent of the current team and also bodes well for the future success of the program. “Overall it was a pretty good weekend.

Seven district qualifiers is a good number,” reflected head coach Trent Turner. “Hopefully we’ll have a good week of preparation and compete well at the District level.” BOWLING Siblings Haley Jack and Robbie Jack gave CV bowling plenty to celebrate in the LL Singles Championships last week with Haley, a freshman, taking seventh place in the girls’ tournament on Friday the 14th and Robbie, a junior, securing eighth place in the boys’ tournament the day before. Haley’s first five games gave her a total of 940 pins, putting her in fourth place after round one and easily making the top 18 cut to advance to round two. Her subsequent four games propelled her overall

total to 1680 and improved her rank to third heading into the final portion of play. Haley’s final round pitted her against Rhiannon Kolt of Manheim Township, in which Kolt prevailed 259-178, and Haley finished the tournament in seventh. Robbie experienced a similar track in his tournament journey, and after round one, Robbie had amassed 1081 pins to lead all bowlers, with the top 38 advancing into the second round. Another four games brought his total to 1788 pins, temporarily ranking Robbie in fifth place with the top 10 earning their way into the final stepladder portion of the event. Robbie’s progression through the final was halted after a meeting with Garden Spot’s Trevor Courtney, in which he slipped behind 212-157 and earned eighth place honors overall. “Both Haley and Robbie bowled tremendously throughout the day,” praised head coach Doug Davidson. “They both lost in the quarterfinals to quality opponents.” Next up, the Jack siblings will be joined by Annabel Whitton as the three bowlers have qualified to participate in district playoffs on Saturday, February 22 at Clearview Lanes.

Fairmount will host a Safety Vest Frolic on Friday, March 6, at 9:30 a.m. in the Crest View Gathering Room, located at 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata, on the east side of the Fairmount campus. The public is invited. Kay L. Moyer, safety nurse educator from the Cooperative Extension Service, will supply materials to make vests and assemble kits to donate to local schoolchildren who walk or bike on back roads. Volunteers are needed to help cut pieces of fabric fastener or reflective tape for the vests or assemble the cut

pieces into kits. In response to concerns for the safety of the many Amish and Mennonite children who walk, bike or ride a scooter on back roads to and from their schools during the school year, Moyer came up with a program to make and distribute reflective vests for the children to wear when traveling the roads. The vests are intended to allow cars and trucks to quickly notice the children. Since the beginning of this project, more than 32,000 vests have been given to students, and students who have worn them for years

now need to have them replaced. Those are not able to attend but are interested in helping in their own home may call 717394-6851. Due to increased demand, there is a great need for more people to sew, as well as for someone to cut fabric for vests. Donations are also needed also to purchase additional materials for more vests. Parents or teachers of young students who need vests are welcome to call the previously mentioned phone number. Directions are available at www.FairmountHomes.org.

A workshop titled “Mennonite and Amish DNA Results” will take place on Saturday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster. Darvin L. Martin, a well-known genealogist and author, will host the workshop, which will share a new perspective on Mennonite and Amish genealogy. This perspective is a result of advances in DNA testing. This DNA project focuses specifically on Mennonites and Amish who immigrated to Pennsylvania during the 17th and 18th centuries. Using genealogy research and advances in DNA testing, it seeks to identify their families and descendants. Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society

originated the project during the 300th anniversary of the first Mennonite settlement of what is now Lancaster County. As individuals who order DNA testing share their results with Martin, the project expands, and new trends emerge. Martin will describe the details of this project and demonstrate how the families being studied are connected. There is a cost to attend. Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society members will receive a discount. Preregistration is required before Wednesday, March 4. For details and registration, readers may visit http://bit.ly/lmhsDNA.

Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will offer Antique Quilt Turning on Tuesday, March 24. The morning session will take place from 10 a.m. to noon, and the afternoon session will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The up-close-and-personal event will begin with viewers gathered around a stack of antique quilts curated from the LMHS museum collection. Barbara Garrett, a local quilt historian, will review each quilt, providing the background, pointing out unique features, and telling stories. After each quilt is featured, it will be turned off the stack, and the next quilt will come into view. Garrett developed her expertise during 45-plus years of researching and documenting Pennsylvania German quilts of southeastern Pennsylvania. Participants will learn about the makers and their worlds, fabrics, styles, and patterns unique to

the quilts in this region. The two-hour event is intended to fit into travel plans for visitors attending the Lancaster Quilt Show or AQS Quilt Show. There is a cost to attend, and LMHS members will receive a discount. To register, readers may call LMHS at 717-393-9745 or visit http://bit.ly/QuiltAM for the morning session or http://bit.ly/QuiltPM for the afternoon session. A paid reservation will include complimentary admission to LMHS’ museum exhibit, “Decorated and Plain: An Amish and Mennonite Sampler. On March 24 only, the exhibit will display 12 quilts not included in the quilt turning. The display will include the newly acquired, well-known Diamond Sampler quilt, acclaimed as “the greatest quilt ever to come from Lancaster County. For visitors not participating in the Antique Quilt Turning, there will be a separate exhibit admission fee.

care units - as well as a basic life support vehicle and a supervisor vehicle have ACR kits. The ambulances each have a sticker declaring them as “prepared for pediatrics.” Lancaster EMS meets all of the standards of the master level that were established as part of a voluntary pediatric recognition program supported by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the Pennsylvania Emergency Health Services Council, and the Emergency Medical Services for Children organization. Master level ranks just below the maximum available and indicates that Lancaster EMS conducts regular pediatric community education and provides pediatric-specific training for staff members. All staff members must have clear background checks as well. To reach the top level, Lancaster EMS must submit paperwork indicating that it has a person certified to perform car seat safety checks on staff. “We’re not complacent,” director of operation Jerry Schramm remarked. Additionally, Lancaster EMS is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services, which promotes national standards of excellence. Just 186 ambulance services out of the country’s 21,000 agencies are nationally accredited, and Lancaster EMS is one of only five in Pennsylvania. Accreditation may be renewed or revoked following an evaluation every three years. Grants to purchase additional ACR kits are pending, said marketing and development coordinator Marisa Seubert, but donations are always welcome. Anyone who would like to contribute may contact Seubert at marisa_seubert@lemsa.com or 717-872-4688, ext. 231. To learn more about Lancaster EMS, readers may visit www.lemsa.com.

Pennsylvania that specified that in the event of a field birth where a child was born outside of a hospital or other medical facility - the mother and baby cannot be transported together. Instead, each person is supposed to have their own ambulance and dedicated team of paramedics or emergency medical technicians. When an adult is transported in an ambulance, seatbelt-like straps are used to secure the person to the gurney. Straps cross the legs and torso and come over the head, preventing side-to-side and back-and-forth movements. For children, however, the devices used by Lancaster EMS had been rated to a minimum of 10 pounds, which is too big for most newborns. That prompted the search, with the resulting acquisition of ambulance child restraint (ACR) kits. The bags each contain four harnesses that can accommodate children ranging in weight from 4 to 11 pounds up to 100 pounds. The child is strapped into the flexible harness, which is secured to the gurney frame. The devices are made of breathable fabric to allow maximum airflow and to meet infection control standards. They are machine-washable for easy cleanup. The straps are padded to keep children comfortable and to reduce the risk of pressure sores from long-distance transportation. The ACR kits are not cheap, but Lancaster EMS leaders want its 23 fleet vehicles to each have a kit. At the very least, the goal is to outfit the 15 ambulances that are in service during the course of a day with ACRs. Lancaster EMS started off with five kits, but thanks to a $4,771.97 grant from Highmark Blue Shield, the organization was able to purchase seven additional kits. Now, all advanced life support vehicles - also known as mobile intensive

Since the beginning of the fall 2019 semester, MHALC and TeenHope have been working together to provide students with education regarding anxiety, depression, and suicide prior to the screenings. “ When I learned of (MHALC’s) existing program, it seemed to be a perfect fit,” said Kim Moore, director of TeenHope. That realization led to a pilot program at a couple of Lancaster County high schools, where Gaudioso has spoken to students who were participating in screenings. Gaudioso educates teenagers about mental health treatments, which include therapy, medication if needed, having supportive people around, and educating oneself about symptoms. She also talks about the steps involved in getting help and the different types of therapists available, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, or licensed social workers, and she talks about what students can expect during the screening. Part of Gaudioso’s presentation is to encourage students to be honest during the screening. “I tell them they need to be honest and true to themselves because it will only help them,” she said, adding that she goes over the signs of depression and anxiety in detail with students and asks them to take a serious look at their own behavior. She asks them to look at things they once participated in that they are no longer doing, such as communicating with friends, completing schoolwork, playing a sport, or spending time with family. Kim McDevitt, executive

director of MHALC, noted that the organization is trying to be proactive in facing the increased rate of anxiety and depression in teenagers. “We are working diligently to remove the barriers that prevent one from getting the help they need,” said McDevitt. “Mental health disorders can affect school performance, harm relationships, and lead to suicide, (so) we have increased our efforts in educating students on the importance of mental wellness, how to identify what a mental health challenge is, and how they can receive support for themselves and others.” When Gaudioso speaks to students, she tries to allay anxiety and fear about participating in a mental health screening. “(I tell them this is) just like getting your height, weight, and vision checked (at school),” she said. “You get your mental health checked.” Gaudioso explained that the screenings are done by licensed professionals, and students are referred to other mental health specialists depending on the test results. Following a presentation, the students will be surveyed to gauge the impact of the information they have received. “We feel it’s important for students to have as much information as possible so they know it’s normal to struggle in these areas … and there is help available for everyone,” said Moore. Readers who would like to learn more about MHALC may visit www.mhalancaster.org. More information about TeenHope may be found at http://scclanc.org/teenhope.

GiGi’s Playhouse in Lancaster opened its doors on Jan. 11 to provide a place specifically geared toward babies, children, teenagers, and adults with Down syndrome. The organization’s motto is “Educate. Inspire. Conestoga Valley School District (CVSD) is one of 250 school districts in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on its 10th annual AP District Honor Roll. To be included on the list, CVSD had to, since 2017, increase the number of students participating in Advanced Placement (AP) classes while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP exam scores of 3 or higher. In 2019, more than 4,000 colleges and universities around the world received AP scores for college credit, advanced placement, or both, and/or consideration in the admissions process. Inclusion in the 10th annual AP District Honor Roll is based on a review of three years of AP data, from 2017 to 2019, from 38 AP exams, including world language and culture. For inclusion on the 10th annual AP District Honor Roll, districts must meet the following criteria: increase participation/access to AP classes by at least 4% in large districts, at least 6% in medium districts, and at least 11% in small districts; increase or maintain the percentage of American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students taking exams and increase

or maintain the percentage of American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander students scoring 3+ on at least one AP exam; and improve or maintain performance levels when comparing the 2019 percentage of students scoring a 3 or higher to the 2017 percentage, unless the district has already attained a performance level at which more than 70% of its AP students earn a 3 or higher. In the Class of 2019, CVSD had a total of 126 AP exams taken, 10 AP Scholars (students who received scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams), four AP Scholars with Honors (students who received an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more exams), and four AP Scholars with Distinction (students who received an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams). Conestoga Valley High School offers the following AP courses: Calculus AB and BC, Statistics, English Literature, Spanish Language and Culture, Biology, Computer Science A, Physics, Studio Art, United States History, U.S. Government and Politics, and World History.

The Friendly Valley Daisy Girl Scouts completed the Leadership Journey “5 Flowers, 4 Stories, 3 Cheers for Animals!” on Dec. 7, 2019. The girls gathered at the Girl Scout cabin in Paradise and spent the day learning to take care of both themselves and other animals. They did this through storytelling, role playing, and creative expression. At the end of the event, the Daisies presented what they had learned to a group of parents and adult leaders. This Girl Scout Leadership Journey is part of a series that seeks to help girls learn about themselves and the world through storytelling. The stories are intended to allow girls to experience the variety of the world around them and thereby develop empathy, tolerance, and acceptance of others. Stories are also intended to sharpen girls’ minds and spark their imaginations, inspire and motivate, and teach girls how to lead in their own lives and in the world. Throughout this journey, the Daisies hear others’ stories and tell their own stories. As part of Leadership Journey, the Daisies earned a series of three awards. They earned the Birdbath Award by learning to care for animals and for themselves. “It is amazing to know that our community is taking little steps to make big, positive, lifesaving changes in children’s lives all around the world,” said Lora Mangus Wenger, chair of the Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) MobilePack event at

Willow Street Mennonite Church (WSMC), 399 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street. WSMC has hosted six MobilePack events, with the efforts resulting in more than 1.3 million meals sent to malnourished children around the world. Wenger reported that meals packed at the WSMC

As the April 17 event is marking the 10th anniversary of the Remember America Speaker Series, a special video presentation that includes clips of previous speakers will be part of the program. Becker related that DCA has hosted more than 18,000 people at series events. “We completely credit God with the ability to walk with the community,” Becker said. “We’re blessed and grateful that Lancaster has embraced this event and the school,” Myers added. Dayspring Christian Academy (DCA), 120 College Ave., Mountville, will host former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee at its next Remember America Speaker Series event on Friday, April 17. The doors to the event venue, the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, will open at 6 p.m., with the pre-meal program beginning at 6:30 p.m. Gallery seating, for those who will attend only the featured presentation, will open at about 7:20 p.m. A VIP reception with Huckabee will be held prior to the evening’s festivities, with attendance by invitation only. Tickets to the reception are included with event sponsorship packages starting at the $2,500 level. The theme for the event is “Living Stones of Liberty … for Such a Time as This.” During the program, DCA fifth-grader Jessie Krieger will give her Headmaster’s Oration Competition-winning oration, titled “Liberty Outdated?” “Jessie’s title matched well with the Remember America Speaker Series mission,” commented DCA marketing director Lisa Becker. The event is expected to draw 1,500 to 1,600 attendees, certainly the largest audience Jessie has ever faced. “I’m really excited and really nervous all at the same time,” she said. DCA headmaster Michael Myers is looking forward to hosting Huckabee. “He is a great

example of a Christian who took his Christian faith seriously, even to the point of taking it to the political realm,” Myers commented. He described Huckabee as warm and welcoming, noting that those characteristics serve Huckabee well in his role as a pastor. “He’s a great exemplar of (passing on our faith to the next generation), and he can challenge us with credibility,” Myers added. “People tend to listen to him respectfully because he’s respectful.” The program will also include performances by DCA choral groups led by Lindsey Stauffer. While the singers are primarily in the upper grades, 15 members of the lower school’s Joyful Noise group will join them on stage. Additionally, a display of artifacts and media from the Faith and Liberty Discovery Center will be available for attendees to

events have been distributed in Somalia, Haiti, Belize, Dominican Republic, Malawi, and Uganda. It takes about 1,500 volunteers working in two-hour shifts to pack 300,000 meals in three days. “The more people who learn about FMSC, the more support grows; as a result, more meals can get packed and more people in need will be fed,” Wenger remarked. “One outgrowth of our event is that a church from Berks County will be hosting their first event this May after having participated in our event. That is exactly what we have been hoping will occur: more MobilePack events taking place, resulting in more people being fed around the world.” The MobilePack has also made a local impact. Last year, WSMC accepted donations for the Lancaster County Council of Churches Food Hub, and it will do so again at this year’s MobilePack event, which will be held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, March 27, 28, and 29. “Unfortunately, food insecurity is a local challenge as a well as a global one for many (people),” Wenger remarked.
