Help sought for Aaron’s Acres summer camp
BY JEFF FALKIt’s more than just a summer experience. It’s an altruistic adventure, a chance to step outside the proverbial box, an opportunity to make a difference.
Aaron’s Acres is seeking applicants to help fill a handful of important and meaningful roles. The work is steady and the benefits are out of this world.
“It becomes about the experiences and getting to see the
campers’ growth,” said Becky Miller, a summer group leader for Aaron’s Acres. “It just kind of turns into being there and growing a sense of pride in yourself. The amount of love shown at these camps is amazing. That’s what keeps counselors coming back for as long as they can.”
Located at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, Aaron’s Acres is a nonprofit that works with individuals ages 5 to 21 with physical and mental disabilities. The organization is

BY JEFF FALK BY JEFF FALKWild birds are free and colorful and interesting.
Wild birds are also accessible, plentiful and unique.
The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) exists to observe and document birds, preserve them and advocate for them. For members of LCBC, birding is more than just a pastime; it’s a passion, a lifestyle.
“It becomes a way to get out and enjoy nature,” said LCBC president Ted Nichols. “Anyone can walk outside of their house, and in 15 minutes, you’re going to see a bird. The fact that birds are there is something that makes birding fun. It’s not a hobby that requires a lot of money to get into. It can be done everywhere. The people who are into it as a hobby are welcoming, and they’re willing to mentor newcomers.”
An independent organization founded in 1937, LCBC is made up of over 350 dues-paying
members who hail from every part of Lancaster County and beyond. They are from varying walks of life, occupations and backgrounds, and the only thing that they all share is a love of birds.
“Throw a dart at a map of Lancaster County, and every ZIP code is represented by our membership,” said Nichols. “But even beyond that, a large part of central Pennsylvania is represented by our membership. That’s the interesting thing about birding; it attracts people of all demographics and all ages. They’re people of a wide variety of occupations. It’s a general cross section of society as a whole. It’s a hobby that truly is open to everyone.”
LCBC meets at 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of every month from September through March at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster; in April, May and June at Middle Creek Wildlife

Dancing, music can chase winter blues away
Tired of the short, cold days? Suffering from a touch of cabin fever? Have you got the winter blahs?
The Big, Big Jazz Band has the remedy. It involves tapping your feet, grooving to music, and leaving the house for a night out.
“People want to get out of the house. By this time, people are tired of snow. We’re giving people a night on the town if they want to come out,” said Al Kernc, publicity manager for the Big, Big Jazz Band.

seeking counselors for its summer camp program. Specifically, Aaron’s Acres is looking for volunteer buddies age 13 and older, as well as counselors age 18 and up.
The nonprofit is hoping to add a total of 40 to 50 buddies and counselors for its summer camp, which will start its season in the middle of June.
“The best things these campers get is seeing (fellow campers) who are similar to themselves,” said Miller. “Individuals with disabilities do really well with routine, and they get to do all these activities. Just being in an environment that is accepting of their disabilities is important. They are put into an environment where they can do anything. When they come to camp, they feel at home.”
Aaron’s Acres conducts its summer camps at
New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland. The summer camps are broken down into three 10-day sessions on Mondays through Fridays from June 17 to 28, July 8 to 19 and July 22 to Aug. 2.
The camps feature daily activities such as swimming, crafts and fitness programs; off-site field trips; and therapies like music and equine.
“(The buddies and counselors are) mostly college students, but we also have kids who want to gain experience and people who have jobs with summers off,” said Miller. “If you’ve never gone into a summer camp program, it can be intimidating, but the amount of support that comes through the program is so comforting. It’s such a good learning experience and stepping stone. It’s such a good way to get a foot in
the door. Just seeing how the world works through (the campers’) eyes is so rewarding.”
Because it adheres to a strict policy of a one-toone or one-to-two counselor-to-camper ratio, Aaron’s Acres’ summer camps are staff driven. Last summer, Aaron’s Acres turned away 100 families with disabled individuals who applied for its summer camp programs because it lacked adequate numbers of staff members.
“We’re trying to give our campers an experience in a safe environment with the support they need,” said Miller. “The need is very great. We have so many families, and it’s not the same campers every year. Last year, we were nowhere close to having the staff to accommodate everyone on our list.”

Promise Players will present “Sarah Mae and Her Kinfolk”

Adults may purchase tickets for a suggested minimum donation, and children 12 years old and younger may purchase tickets at a discounted price. Alternatively, children age 12 and under may pay for admission with a canned food item, which the Promise Players will donate to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank in Quarryville. Doors will open one hour before each performance.
Set in the western hills of North Carolina in the 1930s, “Sarah Mae and Her Kinfolk” tells the tale of an Appalachian family that comes together for a reunion at its old home.
The Promise Players last performed “Sarah Mae and Her Kinfolk” nine years ago. This year, the musical will be directed by Tim Strawser, who will also play the role of Uncle Brutus.

The power of the praying mom
BY ANN MEAD ASHWhen organizers of the yearly Linville Hill Christian School spring banquet search for a speaker, they consider whom the entire community, not just families associated with the school, might like to hear. They also look seriously at questions facing youth. “A major challenge for young people in our nation is tremendous confusion around things that were considered basic 20 to 40 years ago,” said head of school Matt Buckwalter. After considering those challenges, school representatives chose Christopher Yuan, author of “Out of a Far Country” and “Holy Sexuality and the Gospel.” “(Christopher) has a fascinating journey,” said Buckwalter.
Christopher will be the featured speaker at the Linville Hill 2024 spring banquet on Friday, March 22, at Beechdale Farms, 458 Beechdale Road, Birdin-Hand. Appetizers will be served at 5:15 p.m., and dinner will begin at 6 p.m.
Christopher is the son of Chinese immigrants. His father, Leon, a dentist, and his mother, Angela, raised him in Chicago. Buckwalter noted that Christopher was brought up with the understanding that he should get good grades, obey his parents, and follow in his father’s footsteps. While still in college, Christopher announced to his parents that he was engaged in an alternative lifestyle that did not align with their beliefs. He also began using and selling drugs. Three months before he was scheduled to graduate from dental school, he was kicked out. Christopher then moved to Atlanta. Before Christopher was kicked out of school, both Leon and Angela had become born-again Christians, and Angela spent much time in prayer focused on the hope that Christopher would find Christ. Arrested on drug charges, Christopher was in federal prison when he learned that he was HIV positive. One day, his focus was drawn to graffiti on his ceiling that referenced Jeremiah 29:11, which reads, “‘I know the plans I have for you,’ declares
the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” Christopher became a Christian who now finds his identity in Christ alone. Upon leaving prison, he studied at Moody Bible Institute and Wheaton College Graduate School, receiving his Doctor of Ministry from Bethel Seminary.
Claudia Landis, business manager at Linville Hill, noted that several staff members had heard of Christopher’s story. She said that Christopher wrote “Out of a Far Country” with Angela. “It’s a beautiful story of his conversion,” Landis reported, adding that chapters written by Angela testify to “how hard it is for parents to watch their children go through a season of such darkness and not become hopeless.”
Buckwalter acknowledged that the speaker was chosen with whole families in mind. “Oftentimes behind the story is a praying mom or grandmom who changed (the outcome),” he said. “We hope this evening will create space for young people to hear a journey to truth and to offer
Hill Christian School banquet.
encouragement for those praying (parents) whose children are stuck in a really dark place that breakthrough will come.”
Buckwalter added that guiding children in their own stories is a mission of Linville Hill. “As a school, we recognize the responsibility to train our children … and part of our job is to help them tell a better story,” he said. “To do that, we have to put in front of them stories (of) finding truth and finding God that are victorious and hopeful even though sometimes those journeys are filled with pain and difficulty.”

Friends to display artwork at Ware Center
In honor of Women’s History Month, the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, will host an exhibit of artworks by Millersville University (MU) alumnae Kerry Sacco and Ann Thomas in the Regitz Gallery. The exhibit, “Connections and Pathways,” will open with a reception on Frist Friday, March 1, from 6 to 8 p.m., during which visitors may meet the artists and view the collection.
In this exhibition, Sacco and Thomas interpret the complexity of nature and celebrate 40 years of friendship through connections and pathways to the landscape of their worlds.
Both artists graduated with art degrees from MU, but their initial path did not follow the painting route. Sacco pursued graduate studies in lithography
at MU and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. During that time, she began to appreciate works by the Pennsylvania Impressionists, which led to further studies of oil painting. Her landscapes in the upcoming exhibition focus on wellknown local subjects, and the artworks are notable for their composition, color, and brushwork.
Upon graduating from MU, Thomas focused on architecture, interior design, and other entrepreneurial pursuits. A decade ago, after raising two daughters, she embraced the one medium that had eluded her: oil painting. Primarily self-taught, she creates landscapes that explore the beauty that surrounds her home in Hunterdon County, N.J., and in Bucks County.
The exhibition will be on view through Friday, March 29. The gallery is open daily. For more information, call 717-871-7814.
Company transitions to employee stock ownership plan
Weaver Superior Walls and Northeast Superior Walls recently announced a significant milestone in their corporate organization, as they transition to a 100% Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), providing all current and future employees full ownership.
The transition to an ESOP marks a strategic decision by the companies’ previous ownership group, Trendline Capital, to empower its workforce and align their interests with the long-term success of the business. The move reflects the firms’ commitment to fostering a culture of shared ownership and empowerment among all employees. The announcement about the transition was made by president and CEO Douglas Pfautz.
Weaver Superior Walls and Northeast Superior Walls sell and install precast concrete foundation systems manufactured in their Ephrata production facilities. Custom foundations are constructed and installed for homes and commercial applications in southeastern Pennsylvania, along with parts of Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Northern Virginia. In 2012, Weaver expanded into parts of New York, Connecticut,
Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont and Maine through an acquisition.
Founded in 1985, Weaver Precast became the nation’s first Superior Walls manufacturer, revolutionizing foundation construction in residential building markets. The Weaver family exited the business in 2021 allowing the newly formed Weaver Superior Walls and Northeast Superior Walls to expand operations under direction of long-term management. Starting the
process in July 2023, the existing team navigated a plan to transition the companies to an ESOP, ensuring a smooth ownership change and empowering employees as stakeholders.
Based in New Holland, Superior Walls of America is a leader in custom precast concrete foundation systems through its licensee system across North America.

Promise Players from pg 3
Although this is the first year Strawser is directing, he has played various parts in the Promise Players’ previous iterations of the show. “I really enjoy acting and being somebody else, and I could do that with any theater group. But I love (the Promise Players’) community and the message of faith,” Strawser said. “The cast gets pretty close in the weeks leading up to the show.”
For every production, the Promise Players chooses a
local nonprofit to support in addition to the food bank in Quarryville. The group often highlights an organization that is connected to the play in some way; this year, the Promise Players decided to support Impact Missions, as it is based in a rural part of the county that resembles the setting of the story.

Winter blues from pg 1
The Big, Big Jazz Band will present its 42nd annual Beat the Winter Blahs Ball on Friday, March 8, at the Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster. The music will start at 7:30 p.m., and the event involves a cash bar and a chef’s breakfast bar at 10:30 p.m.
“It’s a really nice atmosphere,” Kernc continued. “There are tables surrounding the dance floor. People sit and listen. When the band starts, people start dancing. We play a mix of slow tunes and fast songs. The lights are down low. It’s a really nice venue overlooking the golf course.”
A nonprofit, the 20-piece Big, Big Jazz Band will play three 45-minute sets featuring swing, jazz combos and sounds of the big band era. There is an admission fee associated with the ball, but everyone is invited and Lancaster Country Club memberships are not required to attend.
“We do it for our patrons and followers,” said Kernc. “They’re just people from around Lancaster County who have followed the band for years. We have a pretty loyal following. Some I recognize and some I don’t. They’re just people who like the big band sound.”
The Big, Big Jazz Band is hoping to draw 150 to 200 attendees to the Beat the Winter Blahs Ball in order to raise $2,000 to $3,000 for the band’s operating expenses. Of the 10 fundraisers that the Big, Big Jazz Band will play in 2024, the Beat the Winter Blahs Ball is the only whose proceeds will go back to the band.
“The proceeds go towards sustaining the band,” said Kernc. “You’ve got to keep it running. This is the one job we do to raise funds so we can play for other people. We make a little money and it goes into the music.”
Kernc explained that

the band’s other events raise money for fellow nonprofits.
“We help other charities in the Susquehanna Valley raise funds. We’re a human service agency that provides music,” he said.
Organized in 1968 as the Bob Troxell Big, Big Band, the Big, Big Jazz Band is made up of four trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones, a drum kit, a bass guitar and a piano. The band also features vocalist Mary Ann Garrett and is directed by Gary Peters. A host of other musicians serve as substitutes.
Troxell, who played trombone in the Penn State Blue Band while working his way through college, entertained a lifelong love of music and passed it on to the next generation through his work with jazz bands at Lancaster Bible College and local high schools. Troxell started the band as a way to give back to the local community, a
mission that the Big, Big Jazz Band carries on today.
In 2002, the Bob Troxell Big, Big Jazz Band became the Big, Big Jazz Band.
“It’s a big band,” said Kernc, who plays lead trumpet. “We call it a ‘Big, Big Band,’ because it has a big sound. We didn’t want it to be called ‘the Big Band.’ We wanted something bigger and better.”
“We always strive to sound like one instrument,” added Kernc. “We all just love to play, and we’ve all been playing for years. Some are music teachers, some are music instructors, and many are lifetime musicians. We’re people who have had music be a part of our lives.”

field trips are open to the public.
“It’s a lot of what people want to make of it,” said Nichols. “Some people take photos, some record audio, some draw. For the most part, we observe birds through binoculars.”
“Checklisting is a big part of the hobby,” he continued, explaining checklisting is identifying and recording different species by sight or sound.
“That data is recorded, and we keep it on account for the club. Some people have zero interest in keeping lists. They want to live in and enjoy the moment.”
There exist 10,000 species of birds worldwide, 355 of which have been observed in Lancaster County.
“We’re a club with a long history,” said Nichols. “But the focus of getting out and seeing birds remains the same. If you have an interest in birding, we’re here to cultivate that. Once you get involved, it doesn’t take long to see the regular birds in Lancaster County.
Birding opens your eyes to the conservation measures in play.”
