Project Brings Story Stones To Lancaster Preschool BY ANN MEAD ASH

n Jan. 22, soon-to-be Eagle Scout Sarah Marston delivered 26 books and accompanying story stones for each to the Discovery Corner Preschool in Lancaster city. “I was really excited about that,” said Marston, recalling the completion of her Eagle Scout project. Marston began work on the project in November of 2020, but her scouting journey began long before that when she was asked by two friends to take part in a Venture Crew canoe trip. “I already had my (summer) work schedule, and I was helping with the Conestoga Valley swim team,” recalled Marston. But when the Venture Crew started meeting the following September, Marston joined up. By the time she was 17, she was one of the first members of Scouts BSA Troop 82 in Brownstown. Nine young Lancaster women joined Scouts BSA (formerly Boy Scouting) in December 2018. At that time Marston became eligible for an Eagle Scout extension,

which gave her until February 2021 to complete requirements for an Eagle Scout Award. Marston developed the story stone idea with her mother, a former preschool teacher, who helped her collect a number of children’s books. Marston paired each book with about 10 small river stones donated by Penn Stone. Marston coordinated the effort, which involved distributing the books and the stones to fellow Scouts, family members, and other members of the community, with the goal that volunteer painters would paint stones with characters or scenes from each story. “I distributed the books with the goal of having 20 come back for the preschool,” said Marston. While the Elizabethtown College freshman was home for the holidays, she picked up completed rocks and books. “It was a little hectic at times because I was driving all over the county, but it worked out,” said Marston, who used a spray sealer on the stones when they were returned to her to make it easy for

Sarah Marston, member of Scouts BSA Troop 82 in Brownstown, collected books and organized the production of story stones to go with them to donate to a local preschool as part of her Eagle Scout project.

ences a bit of a fresh take by encouraging his actors, ages 9 to 17, to look into the depth of their characters. “I am a big fan of character development,” said Weaver. “I am trying to help them understand that every line in the script is in there for a reason to help them … understand their character a little better.” Weaver noted that it has been satisfying to see students take a break from what is happening in the world when they come to rehearsals. “(I enjoy) seeing the kids come in here and have fun for three or four hours and forget about everything else in a safe environment putting on a show,” he said. After having to reschedule, the director is especially looking forward to sharing the hard work of the cast with audiences. “I really hope audiences can see there is still fun to be had in bad times,” he said, adding that he also hopes the theme of authenticity will shine through. “The message behind the show is being able to find your true self,” he explained. “You don’t have to lie or be fake. After more than a decade bringing musicals and dramas to the New Holland area, Cavod Theatre has looked back to the organization’s roots to stage a junior version of one of the theater’s first productions “The Music Man.” Last set to play in December 2020 but postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions, the show, “The Music Man Jr.,” will be presented at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, March 19 and 26; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, March 20 and 27; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, March 21 and 28. “It’s one of the more fun junior shows,” said director Alex Weaver, who grappled with the challenges of rehearsing under COVID-19 restrictions. Weaver divided the 36-member cast into “family groupings,” and taught the show’s lovebirds, Harold Hill, played by Derrick Lambert, and Marian Paroo, played by Soren Lefever, how to portray emo-

tion without getting too close or looking directly at each other while singing. The plot of the musical revolves around Hill, a con man who pretends to be a band leader. He sells musical instruments and band uniforms to the residents of River City, Iowa, while promising to train the members of the new band. The townspeople, with the exception of librarian and piano teacher Paroo, fall for Hill’s tricks. Although Paroo sees the truth, after witnessing Hill helping her younger brother, Winthrop, played by Brandt Esh, overcome his lisp, Paroo begins to fall for the trickster. “The Music Man” has been a staple of musical theater since it debuted on Broadway in 1957. The show is known for toe-tappers such as “76 Trombones” and “Ya Got Trouble,” along with the softer melodies of “‘Til There Was You,” and “Goodnight, My Someone.” Because “The Music Man” is such a popular show, Weaver is planning to deliver the classic tale but still offer audi-

in Germany. Dinners will be available for purchase from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost of a meal will include a half-chicken, coleslaw, applesauce, a cookie, and a beverage. For details, readers may search for “Weaver Family Outreach in Germany” on Facebook.

“We think it’s important for people to know about (human) trafficking and to know it happens right here in Lancaster County,” said Janelle Esbenshade, director of development with North Star Initiative, “with the hope that once they understand … if they come in contact with (someone who is being trafficked), they will be educated enough to know what to do.” To help make community members aware of the signs of trafficking, North Star Initiative will hold an awareness event, Welcome to the Battle, at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, on Friday, March 19. The event, which will feature a panel discussion, will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets, which are limited, may be purchased up until the day of the event. Proceeds raised from the event will help provide trauma therapy for the survivors at The Harbor. Panelists who are lined up to take part are Heather Castellino, Pennsylvania deputy attorney general; Derek Thompson, founder of Abolition Men; Brad Ortenzi, retired police officer and eastern USA regional director of Zoe International; and Liz Nolan, education specialist and licensed professional counselor for North Star Initiative. A surprise guest will also join the discussion. The event will include desserts provided by Zig’s Bakery and Shady Maple. Attendees will be asked to follow Petra’s COVID-19 guidelines, including wearing masks. According to Esbenshade, the forum is designed to edu-

cate by posing questions to the panel about human trafficking, such as, “What is (human) trafficking?” “Who are the victims of this crime?” and “What can you do to get involved?” Esbenshade noted that runaways and homeless people are the main two groups of people who are preyed upon by traffickers. Trafficking that occurs in Lancaster County is often related to the network of highways that converge here. “We are a pass-through state,” explained Esbenshade, who noted that roads from New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia come through Lancaster, York, and Harrisburg to Baltimore and Washington, D.C. North Star operates The Harbor, a place where survivors of trafficking can experience physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual care and support in a Christ-centered program. “The Harbor focuses on restoration and reentry, coordinating the services needed to address physical, mental, legal, educational, and other issues relating to the time spent in the hands of traffickers,” said Esbenshade. With a staff of 15, The Harbor provides around-the-clock care seven days a week. “We accept women 18 to 35 years of age,” said Esbenshade. Esbenshade said that the program is implemented in a number of phases, beginning with an assessment and orientation. “We go over goals and how we can best help (a woman),” explained Esbenshade. “We tailor the curriculum to each individual.” The program includes a focus on trauma and drug and alcohol addiction, along with life skills training. Friendliness from pg 1 In March of 2019, Crystal became a volunteer with ELANCO Dementia Friendly Community (DF), an outreach of Garden Spot Village (GSV). In June of 2019, the organization launched memory cafes to provide settings for individuals with dementia and their caregivers to enjoy social engagement and conversation

about relevant topics in a stigma-free environment. By September of 2020, Crystal was working as coordinator for the organization, which moved to join Dementia Friendly America (DFA) in November of that year, becoming Dementia Friendly Lancaster County (DFLC). At the same time, Crystal became a champion for Dementia Friends PA, which gave her the opportunity to host Dementia Friends sessions. In January, Crystal held her first Dementia Friends information session in a virtual format. The session covered key messages about dementia and how it affects individuals, among other topics. It ended with participants developing a plan involving ways to make the community more dementia friendly.

To introduce the organization to community members, a pamphlet about Dementia Friendly Lancaster County and a volunteer guidelines booklet have been created. The booklet outlines the ways people can serve, including an advisory board, which acts as the organization’s eyes and ears in the community, and a working group, which furthers DFA initiatives and plans events. Crystal noted that people with dementia and caregivers will be essential to the group, but that representatives from businesses and organizations will be important as well. “We want to discuss ways businesses can be more dementia friendly to customers, (such as) creating an atmosphere that is conducive to a customer with dementia or supporting an employee who is a caregiver,” she said. Melody Karick, who serves as director of memory care with GSV, noted that a goal of the organization is to eliminate stereotypes. “One of our hopes is to break the stigma of dementia, by making people aware that it’s OK to have Melody Karick (left) and Crystal Yunginger are hoping this disease,” she said. “We to change perspectives through Dementia Friendly don’t need to hide it or be Lancaster County, an outreach of Garden Spot Village. ashamed of it, and we are the people that can make a difference.” She added that when SCHOOL AGE she trains team members at SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM GSV’s Meadow View Memory Leola Elementary Support campus, she focuses on showing them different approaches to a situation. “There is a way to enhance EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION & CARE quality of life for someone L who is going through this and 717-803-5441 Ask for Adriana ENROL! The City of Lancaster, in partnership with the SoWe neighborhood group and the Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership, has been awarded a $25,000 grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies to create a street mural at the intersection of West Strawberry Street, South Mulberry Street and West Vine Street in the Cabbage Hill neighborhood. A call for artists has been issued to select an artist to work with the neighborhood to create an artwork that reflects a collective reimagining of the intersection. This project is supported by a grant from the Bloomberg Philanthropies Asphalt Art Initiative. Support is also being provided by Sherwin Williams. The grant will help the City of Lancaster to continue following its Ten-Year Plan for Public Art. The call for artists is open to all professional artists who live in southcentral Pennsylvania. Applicants must be age 18 or older and have proven experience with mural painting and public engagement. Submissions will be judged based on examples of relevant work, experience and recommendations. Locally, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank will benefit from the donation. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of Feeding America, has reported that demand for food assistance is at record high levels. Thousands of families in central Pennsylvania are experiencing food insecurity for the first time as a result of the pandemic. Of those individuals, one-third are children. The Subaru franchise, with its 633 retailers nationwide, will work with Feeding America to disburse the donation to the organization’s 199 food banks across the U.S. To ensure that food banks with the highest need are served, Subaru will allocate 20% of the donation to national food programs and food banks with the highest food insecurity rates and child food insecurity rates. Furthermore, participating Subaru retailers nationwide have made supplemental donations to their local Feeding America member food banks, currently totaling an additional 5.6 million meals to those in need, totaling 105 million meals donated from Subaru. Local dealerships in central Pennsylvania that will help provide 99,000 meals to Central Pennsylvania Food Bank include Faulkner Subaru Harrisburg, Apple Subaru and Lancaster County Motors Subaru. To join the effort, Subaru and its retailers invite consumers to make their own donation to Feeding America. Donations will be directed to the food bank that serves the donor’s ZIP code, giving everyone an opportunity to help their communities. Visit www.feeding america.org/subaruloves tohelp to learn more. The automaker’s donation to Feeding America is a part of the Subaru Loves to Help pillar, the community-focused pillar of the Subaru Love Promise. To learn more about Subaru Loves to Help and the community work Subaru does, visit www.subaru.com/help. Subaru of America Inc., joined by its two regional independent distributors, Subaru of New England and Subaru Distributors Corp., recently announced its continued commitment to supporting people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic by helping provide an additional 100 million meals to Feeding America. Each dollar helps to provide at least 10 meals secured by Feeding America on behalf of local member food banks. This donation is double the automaker’s April 2020 donation, in which it helped provide 50 million meals to the hunger-relief organization.

GOLD BUYING WE MAKE HOUSECALLS!

ga Valley representative at the District meet and was seeded 11th in the 500 free. In his final race, Leaman not only exceeded his seeding rank, but also shaved nearly six seconds off his previous career-best time to produce a new personal best of 4:50.92. “He looked so smooth and relaxed. It was a great swim for his final high school meet,” celebrated his coach Barb Raasch. In his journey to Districts, Leaman had a breakout performance at the L-L League Championships in February where he produced career best times in multiple events. He placed second in the 500 free (4:56.14), fifth in the 200 IM (2:01.51), as

well as supplying his best ever times in his splits of both the 200 and 400 free relays. “Micah had the meet of his life,” said Raasch of the senior’s efforts at the League Championships. “With Districts only taking the top 12 in each individual event this year, that is a fantastic achievement. Micah has worked hard through his career and we are so proud of him.”

VisionCorps’ Virtual Format Provides Education And Community When COVID-19 restrictions shut down the state in March of 2020, VisionCorps, a nonprofit organization working to empower the blind and vision impaired, stopped providing services, but not for long. “We shut down services for a couple weeks, but we quickly realized our services were still needed out in the community,” said Chris Ament, vice president of rehabilitation and education with VisionCorps. To stay within the restrictions, Ament explained that VisionCorps developed a hybrid approach to service delivery. The hybrid programming is part virtual and part in-person. “You can’t safely teach someone how to cross the street over the computer,” noted Ament, who added that the organization was careful to protect all involved. “Our goal is to address safety with employees and the clients we serve,” he said. “For instance, a lot of our intakes are done either over the computer or the phone, but when someone needs direct attention, whether it’s our occupational therapy or mobility program, (it’s completed in person) with safety precautions taken.” Virtual programming in a variety of formats has been utilized by VisionCorps staff as well as associated groups that receive services. “ We have a lot of small groups
