Tapping along with “The Music Man”
BY ANN MEAD ASH
WhenVince Whitman, director of the Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) spring musical, was searching for this year’s show, he discovered the choices were quite limited. “Basically, there were not a lot of shows available,” lamented Whitman, who noted that area theaters often claim exclusive rights to shows.
Fortunately for Whitman, the classic “The Music Man,” was still on the list. The production, which will involve 49 students, including six elementaryschoolers, will be staged in the school auditorium, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Thursday, March 30; Friday, March 31; and Saturday, April 1, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, April 2, at 2 p.m. A free preview will be given on Wednesday, March 29, at 6 p.m. for Conestoga Valley-area senior citizens who present special cards. Senior citizens who wish to obtain cards may call 717-397-5231.
The plot of the musical revolves around Harold Hill, played by Evan Zimmerman, a con man who pretends
to be a band leader. He sells musical instruments and band uniforms to the residents of River City, Iowa, while promising to train the members of the new band. The townspeople, with the exception of librarian and piano teacher Marian Paroo, played by Riley Fidler, fall for Hill’s tricks. Although Paroo sees the truth, after witnessing Hill helping her younger brother, Winthrop, played by Liam Hengst, overcome his lisp, she begins to fall for the trickster.
The show is known for toe-tappers such as “Seventy-six Trombones” and “Ya Got Trouble,” along with the softer melodies of “‘Till There Was You,” and “Goodnight, My Someone.” Whitman and choreographer Amy Meehan have taken the toe-tapping literally, by adding tap dancing to several of the numbers, including “Shipoopi” and “Seventy-six Trombones.” “Tap is normally not in this show, but we decided to throw some in,” said Whitman, who added that “Rock Island” kicks off the show with fast-talking rapstyle lyrics that he has chosen to underscore with tap dancing.
Although most of the students were unfamiliar with the show, Whitman said that a large number auditioned and that they were very excited to take part. Because of the significant turnout, Whitman was able to choose enthusiastic and talented students for the cast. “Our Marcellus (played by Philip Le) is a freshman, and he’s awesome,” said Whitman. “(In) some of the supporting roles, there are some very talented students (as well).”
Whitman noted that the cast and crew have also overcome challenges, including the retirement of the set designer and having to change pit orchestra conductors just a few weeks before opening night. “We are getting to crunch time,” said Whitman, with only a few weeks of rehearsals left. “We have a lot of work to do to pull this show off.” Thoughtfully, Whitman added, “As with every show, they will pull it all together in time.”
Tickets for all performances are available at www.showtix4u.com by searching for “Conestoga Valley High School.”
Sharing the burden
BY ANN MEAD ASH
There is an old saying that “many hands make light work.” Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC), in partnership with We Rise International and with the help of a grant from LMC Legacy Foundation, would like to lighten the burden of area faith leaders with regard to the mental health of their communities.
Leaders of all faiths in Lancaster, York, Lebanon, and Adams counties are invited to “Guiding Faith Leaders on Mental Health,” a breakfast
scheduled to be held on Wednesday, March 29, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Eden Resort, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster. Seating is limited and registration must be made by Wednesday, March 22. There is a nominal fee to attend.
Kim McDevitt, director of MHALC, said that the breakfast was inspired in part when she attended a funeral for a young man who died of an overdose. She noted that when the officiant gave the eulogy he began to cry. “He said ‘I wish I could have done more,’” recalled McDevitt. Knowing that experts

Margaret Thatcher once said, “If you want something done, ask a woman.” There’s a whole lot getting done in Lancaster County, because for the first time ever, all of the Chambers of Commerce in the county are led by women. Each woman brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to her role, but all of the leaders share a common goal: They want to make their community a great place to live and work.
Denise Grove, who started her role as executive director of the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce in February of 2022,
said the job offers her a way to really connect with others. “As a lifetime resident of Elizabethtown, I had a strong desire to work where I could make a difference and be a part of strengthening our community,” she remarked, a sentiment shared by Heather Valudes, who has been president and CEO of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce since June of 2022. “I love Lancaster and the work that we are able to advance to make our employer community as strong as possible,” she said, noting that the Lancaster Chamber is countywide and represents nearly 1,500 businesses, almost half of the county’s workforce.

and resources are available, McDevitt said that MHALC hopes to provide training and support. “We don’t want them to have to carry the burden on their own,” she said.
Speakers at the breakfast will include Dr. Jeffrey D. Hamilton, who will discuss “ministering to persons facing mental illness,” and Janelle Bitikofer, executive director of We Rise International, which has a Lancaster location. Bitikofer said that We Rise International has conducted in-depth training for faith leaders to teach strategies to reduce stigma and connect them to support. “(Faith leaders) are really instrumental in responding to the needs of their communities,” she said. “They are the people individuals in the faith community go to when they need help and support.”

“This event will be twofold,” pointed out McDevitt, noting that attendees will be asked to identify a champion from within their community who may have background in mental health and can be supportive of a community member in a struggle. “The champions will be invited to a second event on May 25, which will also be held at the Eden,” explained Margie Lamberson, director of development and communications for MHALC. “It will be a follow-up educational session for the people who can assist the (faith leaders) as needs arise to lessen the burden.”

“We will provide training to the champions so they can walk alongside (the faith leaders), who are often tasked with doing that alone without a support system,” said Bitikofer.
McDevitt explained that the champions will then become contact persons between faith communities and MHALC. According to Lamberson, MHALC can then help the champions navigate the complex mental health system, which they are able to provide without charge thanks to the community, foundations, and others who support the work.

LM to recognize Alumni of the Year
Lancaster Mennonite School (LM) has announced that Daniel D. Mast and Jennie Weaver Groff and Jonathan Groff are the 2022 Alumni of the Year. The Alumni of the Year awards are presented annually to alumni who have recently made a significant contribution through service in their community, profession, family, or church. Recipients are selected from nominations made by LM alumni; members of the Alumni Association, faculty, or board of directors; and other friends of LM.
Dan, Class of 1977, lives in Willow Street and is a practicing physician of
internal medicine at Union Community Care in Lancaster, with added qualifications in geriatric medicine. After serving with Indian Health Service and as an internist and early hospitalist with CIGNA in Arizona in the ’90s, he returned to Pennsylvania and private internal medicine/geriatric practice. His practice provided hospital, office, long-term, and wound care. He served as medical director for three wound centers combined with clinical teaching of students, residents and fellows. He has served as a board officer for Landis Communities and its long-term care facility. His passion is for serving and caring for a diverse range of elders, balanced with mentoring and teaching the next generation to be competent and compassionate medical caregivers.
Dan and his late wife, Cindy, have four adult children, who are all alumni of LM, and five grandchildren. Dan is a member of the James Street Mennonite Church community. Dan has been faithful donor to LM, and Cindy was a longtime board member at the school. In the spring of 2022, Dan donated a Southern magnolia to LM, which the Mast family gathered to plant in honor of Cindy’s caring legacy.
Jennie is a member of the LM Class of 1995, and Jonathan is a member of the Class of 1993. In 2010, they joined ownership of Stroopie Inc., a social enterprise that exists to provide meaningful employment for resettled refugee women while making Stroopies stroopwafel cookies. In 2016, the Groffs opened the Sweet Shoppe in downtown Lancaster, where they offer their family’s Groff’s Candies, local ice cream, and freshly made Stroopies. Their employees, women resettled in Lancaster from Syria, Sudan, Congo, Nepal, Burma, and Eritrea, make approximately 15,000 Stroopies a week, which are sold in Lancaster and across the U.S. During the paid work day, the women participate in an English as a Second Language class that helps to prepare them to take on management roles at Stroopies or to enter other careers.
The Groffs have four children and live in Lancaster city, where they participate in a home church. Jennie and their employees often visit LM to speak in chapel about their social enterprise, the impact it is having on the women, and
ways God is working.
To learn more about the Alumni of the Year, visit www.lancaster mennonite.org/alumni/.
The Alumni of the Year presentation will be held during the World Changers Gala event on Friday, March 31. Persons are invited to come celebrate LM and show their support at this fundraiser auction and gala event with proceeds going toward supporting Christ-centered education. Tax credits bring cutting-edge technology to local company
The Lancaster City Alliance, in partnership with Triode Media Group, recently announced that a Colossus Robotic Camera Arm now resides in Lancaster at the Triode headquarters. The precision camera can extend 12 feet in the air, and obtaining it positions Lancaster city-based Triode as a hub for film production companies across the East Coast.
Triode’s participation in the Keystone Innovation Zone (KIZ) tax credit program, managed by the Lancaster City Alliance, provided the opportunity to purchase the piece of equipment.
According to Evan Scudner, executive producer at Triode, the new technology allows for complex camera movements that would otherwise be impossible to create with conventional filming practices. With the new video equipment, Triode can now support film productions across the region,
potentially attracting clients from New York City and Washington, D.C. Triode’s specially trained crew can also travel to client destinations with the camera and gear.
The KIZ is a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania incentive program that offers tax credits to qualified businesses focused on innovations in technology, science and manufacturing. Last year, Lancaster KIZ distributed the maximum eligible tax credit of $100,000 to Triode. Two other city businesses also received the KIZ tax credit. VIZpin Inc. received $95,826, and Creative Coding Group Inc. received $9,074.

For Ashley Zell, who became executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce in January, the job brings a chance to get to know her community. “The friends and connections made and the interaction with the Chamber mem-
bers and community at our numerous different events are definitely the biggest rewards of this position,” Zell said.
The women also remarked that holding the job offers a chance to see their communities thrive. “It’s

seeing kids dancing at the farmers market,” commented Rebecca Branle, who has been executive director of Venture Lititz since August of 2021. “It’s celebrating big wins with merchants. It’s watching this town become ever more alive with art, culture and community pride.” Her perspective matches that of Kristie Schmid, who has been executive director of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce since March of 2021. “I love seeing our community respond to the revitalization in town, the increase in businesses and the new community events,”
Schmid said. “It’s fulfilling to put your time into something and then see others have pride in it as well.” For some of the Chamber leaders, the role is a full-time job. For others, it’s something they do in addition to other employment. As a financial adviser for Edward Jones, Jona Green serves as head of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce on a volunteer basis, but she’s just as committed to that role as she is her paid job. “The biggest reward is absolutely the connection to our schools and community,” said Green, who has been leading her

Chamber since March of 2022. “Our reach is large, but our heart is rooted in service and making more things possible for our members.”
Although each of the Chambers faces its own challenges, the directors all project positivity when it comes to their communities. “Right now, we see the biggest challenge for a number of our members to be finding enough employees,” said Kerry Meyers, who stepped down as executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce after more than 11 years and is now executive assistant to Zell. “And for our small shops in Mount Joy, it is getting customers in their doors. We need the community to support small local businesses.”

Liz Ackerman, who has been executive director of the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce since January of 2019, said her organization faces a challenge of keeping pace with expansion. “We are growing at an exponential rate,” she explained, noting that she values maintaining a close connection with all of the Chamber’s 430-plus members. “We pride ourselves on knowing every member’s name and understanding their needs.”
For some of the directors, being a female leader in the world of business has been a challenge they’ve faced with grace. “I have learned to embrace my leadership style and not shy away from opportunities to lead,” said Grove, noting that she attributes her success to surrounding herself with strong female role models. “Confidence in yourself is key. We all belong at the table, so be brave enough to pull up a chair. If you are afraid, do it anyway.”
That’s a feeling Branle said she understands. “My worst enemy has always been the negative voice in my head, telling me to question my worthiness,” she stated. “If you, too, have a voice like that, learn to tell her to be quiet.”
As committed as they are to their Chambers, all of the women have managed to find a work-life balance. Meyers has been married for
45 years and loves spending time with her two children and five grandchildren. Zell is raising a family of three with her husband, and they enjoy hiking and attending Faith Bible Fellowship Church. Valudes is the married mother of twin daughters, serves as secretary for the Paradise Township Lions Club and helps with Girl Scouts. Grove and her husband enjoy spending time with their seven children and eight grandchildren, and Grove is active with the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown, where she will serve as president beginning in 2025. Ackerman and her husband are raising two children, and she describes herself as a “serial volunteer” with numerous organizations. Branle and her husband have three children, and the family loves to bike, travel and play “very competitive family football games.” Green and her husband are raising two children who are active in their high school’s marching band, and she joked that her favorite hobby is “networking.” Schmid has been married for 22 years, has three girls and loves to read, shop and explore local breweries.
As for advice for other female leaders, each woman referenced striking a balance between being assertive and being kind. “Work with integrity,” Zell stated. “Be willing to humble yourself. Be respectful of others in the workplace and the community.”
Ackerman advised that women should also be kind to themselves. “Own your talents and always accept a compliment,” she remarked. “This is one of the hardest things to learn, but recognizing your strengths, especially when someone points them out to you, provides a confidence that will reach far beyond anything you can read in a book.”
And don’t underestimate what you can achieve, Schmid said, adding, “Never limit yourself. Find your passion and put your all into developing it so you can bring your best to the table.”
Leaders of the county’s Chambers of Commerce include (front, from left) Ashley Zell, Heather Valudes, Denise Grove, (back) Jona Green, Kristie Schmid, Kerry Meyers, Rebecca Branle, and (not pictured) Liz Ackerman.
