CV Boys’ Lax Piles Up 49 Goals in Three Wins

BY ERIC PYLES

Despite how the current stretch of winter makes it seem, it is indeed spring and with that high school spring sports are here. The boy’s lacrosse team shook off the cold, coming out of the gate hot, ripping off three wins and a 49-13 scoring edge.

The season opener came on March 25th with CV topping Wyomissing 18-5 behind seven Jeff Fisher goals and 11 Ben Nolt saves. The Buckskins took control of the game with a combined 11-0 edge in the first and third quarters while adding a solid 8-5 edge over the rest of the game. Fisher added three assists to his goal tally with Hunter Silvaggio (4g-2a) and Tyson Zwaska (3g-2a) providing solid backup. Noah Nolt (2g), Keller Dillman (1g2a) and Isaiah Sensenig (1g-1a) rounded out the offense.

Fisher continued his strong start one day later with six goals and three assists, leading CV to a 14-5 win over Daniel Boone. This time it was a dominating second half that turned a 4-4 deadlock into an easy win with a 10-1 second half run. Silvaggio picked up two scores while Dillman tallied four goals and one assist. Noah Nolt and Sensenig split the remaining two goals with Ben Nolt turning away 11 shots to earn the win. The winning continued on the 29th with a 17-3 romp over Ephrata. CV took control early with an 8-0 run through the opening frame and never looked back. Fisher tallied another five goals and two assists while Dillman enjoyed a four goal-two assist game. Zwaska and Sensenig combined for four goals and three assists while Noah Nolt, Silvaggio, Brady Kistler and Justin Corson tallied one score apiece. Ben Nolt (four saves) and Soren Stoltzfus (three saves) both spent time in goal to share the win.

TENNIS

The boy’s tennis team bounced back from a 7-0 season opening loss to Cedar Crest on March 21st to post wins over Penn Manor and Garden Spot. CV earned a 6-1 win over Penn Manor on the 25th with the lone loss coming in doubles action. The Buckskins were able to take the remaining two doubles matches thanks to Nolan Miller and Jason Schlegelmilch as well as Grady Ray and Ivan Shrom. Miller and Schlegelmilch also picked up singles wins as did Yuji Wenger and Henry McQuate-Krahnke to complete the 6-1 victory.

CV went one better on the 29th, posting a 7-0 win over Garden Spot. Miller, Schlegelmilch, Wenger and McQuate-Krahnke posted another singles sweep to secure the team victory. Wenger and McQuateKrahnke joined the MillerSchlegelmilch and Ray-Shrom pairings to lock up the team sweep with a trio of doubles wins.

SOFTBALL

The softball team is enjoying a 20 start to their season thanks to wins over Middletown and Governor Mifflin.

The season opener came on the 26th with CV topping Middletown 9-2 in Witmer. Rhiannon Henry picked up the win with a complete game and led the offense with two hits and three RBI. Laken Smith drove in two runs without a hit thanks to a sixth inning fielder’s choice and a second inning bases loaded walk. Henry the pitcher racked up 11 strikeouts with four walks with Henry the hitter using two singles to drive in those three runs.

Conestoga Valley survived a sixrun seventh inning rally from Governor Mifflin on the 29th to hold on for an 8-7 win. Henry was able to make it two in a row despite surrendering seven runs on four hits thanks to nine strikeouts and the bats of Smith and Becca Hartranft. Smith used two singles to drive in three runs while Hartranft had three hits with two RBI.

VOLLEYBALL

The boys’ volleyball team kicked off their season on March 26th by hosting Elizabethtown, Central Dauphin East, and Wyomissing for the Buckskin Classic. CV opened with a 3-1 win over Central Dauphin East but dropped the championship match to E-town 3-2 after opening with wins of 25-21 and 25-18. From there Elizabethtown ran off three straight wins to secure the title, leaving Conestoga Valley with silver.

CV opened regular match play on the 28th with another 3-2 loss, this one to Wilson. CV took the marathon first game 37-35 then held off the loss with a 25-21 game four win. Wilson claimed the other three games 25-18, 25-22 and 15-13.

The Buckskins evened up their record on the 29th with a 3-0 win over Penn Manor. Kenji Pha dished out 27 assists with Carson Hoover collecting 16 kills in the 25-17, 2522 and 25-21 win. Camden Clapper added three aces and Kyle Hutchinson 11 digs.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

The girl’s lacrosse team found themselves on the wrong side of both their 2022 games, falling to Wyomissing and Ephrata by a combined 30-8.

The bulk of that damage came in the 14-2 season opening loss to Wyomissing on the 25th. Jamie Handwerger managed 10 saves, but the CV offense was unable to get going with Jordyn Hironimus and Sophia Hess scoring one goal each.

The Lady Buckskins were able to pick up their offensive production on the 29th but still fell to Ephrata by a 16-6 final. Hess recorded a hat trick while Hironimus, Annika Bredeman and Danae Ulrich split the remaining three goals. Allyson Stauffer stepped in the circle and stopped five shots.

TRACK

The track teams kicked off their season on March 29th by hosting Cedar Crest with the girls falling 114-35 and the boy’s 97-49.

As the score would indicate, wins were hard to find for the Lady Buckskins. Mae Linder and Grace Lapp accounted for the two solos wins before joining with Veronica Santamaria and Kylynn Frankford for a 1600m relay win.

The boys’ side was able to cobble together six wins, with four of their five solo wins coming in the field. Emmanuel Gitonga nabbed the 800m, while getting help from Joe Castronova, Micah Aldrich, and Carson Miller to capture the 1600m relay. Zach Stoudt claimed two of those four field wins, topping both the long and high jump fields. Cameron Swinton added a triple jump win while Ismael Camacho finished with a pole vault win.
