Meeting Needs In CV School District An Opportunity To Share Joy
By Ann Mead Ash
On March 18, after a statewide shutdown of nonessential businesses was announced, Angela Trout, director of development with Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), reported that the staff members and volunteers at CVCCS, 2420 Gehman Lane, Lancaster, were adjusting to the new protocol. “There have been changes,” said Trout. “We are doing things differently.” At that point, the two CVCCS programs most affected by the changes were the food bank and Weekend Blessings program. The food bank normally provides a choice pantry, where volunteers work with clients to choose a certain number of items of each food type based on family size. The Weekend Blessings program provides food for two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners, and, when available, snacks See Meeting Needs pg 2

On March 13, before Gov. Tom Wolf announced that schools would be closed, Dan Stone, Upper School principal at Dayspring Christian Academy (DCA), 120 College Ave., Mountville, talked with the school’s senior students. “I jokingly told them they might have to graduate in July,” said Stone, who noted that the seniors were not happy with his announcement. “I told them it was a joke, (but) I can’t promise it will be May 30 (as planned).

That might move a couple weeks.” All joking aside, Stone said that first and foremost, the school has taken a posture of prayer in response to the See Dayspring pg 9

It’s often said that every challenge is an opportunity - an opportunity to grow, to encourage, to be compassionate, to give, to make others smile. Even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, we at the Pennysaver have noticed countless community members embracing this concept, and we’d love to see more! We’re giving you an opportunity to share your joy by submitting ways you or others are figuratively turning lemons into lemonade. What fun activities have you done with your kids? What made you smile today? What constructive hobbies have you found to help you adjust to recent life changes? What has someone else done - knowingly or unknowingly that has blessed you or encouraged you? Tell your experiences at www.face book.com/townlively. Pictures and videos are welcome! Some stories will be chosen to be highlighted in a future issue of the Pennysaver and on townlively.com.

Local Pharmacies are Disappearing... But You Still Have a Choice For over 25 years, Wiley’s Pharmacy has been proudly serving Lancaster County. As a trusted, family-owned neighborhood pharmacy, Wiley’s has provided its customers a level of personal service and a friendly, smalltown feel that is, sadly, disappearing across the country. By the time this article is published, many of our neighbors will have been displaced from what seemed like a permanent fixture in the fabric of this town. After 140-years in business, Royer Pharmacy will be closing its doors, another casualty of the increasing competition, buying power and marketing dollars of the large pharmacy chains. While Royer Pharmacy worked hard to seamlessly transition its prescription files to their new “big chain home, many former customers feel like they
have been given no choice in the pharmacy experience they deserved. What many displaced and frustrated former Royer’s customers may not know, is that there is still a choice, a choice to immediately return to a neighborhood pharmacy that believes “You Deserve More. The choice to keep your prescription with a friendly, neighborhood pharmacy is still very much alive at Wiley’s Pharmacy. There are options to return to a smaller, less crowded pharmacy that intimately understands your situation and needs. Wiley’s provides the personalized experience missing with the large pharmacy chain stores. In addition, Wiley’s offers modern choices and conveniences that promise to match that of a much larger competitor like CVS or Walgreens. Wiley’s aims to be a bridge that merges personalized care and modern
convenience without turning its customer’s names into numbers. Wiley’s can provide affordable prescription prices and a warm welcome. It is a core belief of Wiley’s Pharmacy, that you deserve more from your pharmacy and this credo includes unique services and products, but truly starts with the Pharmacists. Wiley’s highly-trained, friendly pharmacy team is passionate to help you, by giving you the attention you deserve. This includes dedicated assistance with many aspects of your prescription that may not be part of the experience at a large chain pharmacy. Every Wiley’s visit welcomes complimentary consultations which can include instruction on how to properly dose your medications, explain how your meds may interact with food or drink, and suggest how to properly dispose of old or unused medications. Wiley’s will even go the extra step to discuss

medication synchronization, allowing you to conveniently fill all prescriptions on the same day, saving you time and energy. Having a choice includes giving you options when it comes to your prescriptions and how you receive them. Wiley’s Pharmacy understands its customers and provides products that customize medications to meet customer needs. Custom products like Mediset take the guesswork out of taking daily medications. This convenient pill organizer provides a special medication container, pre-filled by your
pharmacist with all of your medications for the week. Wiley’s goes beyond the services of many competitors by offering custom dosages, medication flavorings and even custom compound medications that cater to specific allergies and sensitivities. Lets see a larger chain pharmacy go that far. Perhaps Wiley’s most exciting perk, offered to all customers, is FREE prescription delivery. Whether it’s the weather, physical limitations or a desire to stay inside, Wiley’s offers you more by delivering your custom prescriptions and
anything else you need, directly to your doorstep. It is an interesting time for sure. Local fixtures in the community are being increasingly swallowed up by larger competitors faster than ever. Names are being exchanged for ID numbers and warm greetings on a first name basis are replaced by security doorbells. When it comes to your Pharmacy and your health, remember, you do have a better choice, choose Wiley’s Pharmacy because “You Deserve More. R057361

and beverages. Distribution for both programs is held at CVCCS’ offices on Wednesdays and Thursdays. For existing scheduled food bank clients, the main change is in the way the food is distributed. “We ask that they come at their scheduled time, but they are not coming into the building, explained Trout, who said that a drive-through system, which is normally used to distribute holiday meals, is being utilized. Food is prepacked into paper bags, and then volunteers take the bags out to the client’s car at the food bank door. “We make sure they have plenty of food, said Trout. “There has been no change in what they’re receiving. According to Trout, packages include nonperishables, meat, dairy items, and produce. She noted that a local restaurant that temporarily closed on March 17 had extra produce that it donated to CVCCS for clients. Trout said that it is realistic to expect the numbers of area families needing the food bank’s services to increase in the next few weeks. Those in need of food services or assistance through the CVCCS Back on Track (BOT) program may call Dottie Slothower at 717-208-3711, ext. 103, to schedule an intake. The BOT program serves residents who work, own or rent a home, and pay their bills, but do not qualify for
social services and are one paycheck away from severe financial difficulties. More information about the program may be found at https://cvccs.org/financial -coaching. CVCCS would appreciate monetary donations and gift cards in $20 increments to purchase gas and groceries for BOT participants. Like the food bank, the Weekend Blessings program is also handled by pickup between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Families of students who are currently enrolled in the program may visit the food bank entrance, give the child’s name when they arrive, and be checked off a list. Students who are not enrolled in the program will not be served without approval from the child’s school or guidance counselor. Parents who wish to enroll their child must contact the elementary, middle, or high school that the child attends and talk to an administrator there. With the anticipated spike in food requests due to school and business closings, food items that the bank especially needs include meal kits such as those that utilize hamburger or tuna. “Meal kits are huge, said Trout, who noted that taco and casserole kits make it especially easy for recipients to prepare a meal. “All they need is a meat, and we provide meat, said Trout. Other needs include canned soup, canned fruit, canned pasta,
spaghetti sauce, canned meats, boxed potatoes, and canned chili. The pantry also stocks nonfood items such as shampoo, deodorant, laundry detergent, toiletry items, toilet paper, and feminine hygiene products, along with paper towels. An updated list of

needed items may be found at https://cvccs.org. The CVCCS clothing bank temporarily closed so that volunteers and staff could complete a seasonal changeover as spring arrives. The bank was slated to reopen on April 2.

A few months ago, Veritas hired Bruce Etter as its academic dean. Etter, a national leader in online education, formerly taught at Veritas Academy and then went on to lead two of the largest online classical Christian schools in the country. Etter led the preparation of Veritas’s faculty and staff. Veritas made its decision to close earlier than many other local schools. Administrators, sensing the impending government-mandated closures and taking advantage of the school’s unused snow days, decided to use the week of March 16 to train and prepare faculty to become online educators and announced this to families the morning of March 13. The credit for this critical decision goes to school nurse Hannah Barry and school physician Dr. Susan Mellinger. Still, the move to online education is a big change for Veritas. In order to help all of its families take advantage of this online education, Veritas delivered Chromebooks to any family that indicated a need. These laptops were part of the school’s typing program. Veritas installed the necessary software on each machine so students can access classes and complete their work. As the teachers and students become comfortable with this new way of learning, Veritas is now looking ahead for ways it can serve the greater community by offering classes to students around Lancaster County while schools remain closed. Veritas will also allow students all over the county to

productive for both children and adults, so consider searching the internet for free classes and other educational resources. Podcasts in an area of interest can help make the hours move more quickly, and online puzzles and games can also help keep the brain engaged. The situation is ideal for families to spend time creating quality experiences and memories. Break out the board games or the playing cards or just engage in an old-fashioned game of charades. Getting outside is also a great option. Yard games such as croquet or badminton are good choices when the weather is fine. A piece of chalk can create a hopscotch game in seconds, and a length of rope can provide hours of jumping activity. Maintaining social distance is easier in the great outdoors, so walking, running, and bicycling are all ways for members of a family to stay healthy while spending time together in the fresh air. In addition, those with schoolage children may want to consider structuring days to keep a routine in place. Having meals, snacks, assignments, play, and other activities at approximately consistent times creates a sense of stability. Look for activities that encourage creativity. Remember the excitement of the possibilities that lie in repurposing an old shoebox? Children can feel that same sense of potential and utilize their imaginations with simple household items such as cardboard, crayons, cotton balls, and glue. Mandy Leggett, a homeschooling Conestoga-area mother and president of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce, suggested using puzzles to teach about places. Her children complete puzzles of pictures from national parks, and the family does a virtual tour of each one as they put it together. Putting the puzzle together begins with a math assignment that measures the

work surface to be sure there is room for the puzzle. With libraries closed, many families with children may be missing educational weekly activities. Some libraries are offering story times online. Heather Smith, director of the ELANCO Library in New Holland, said that the organization is encouraging families to check out its online resources at www.elancolibrary.org. “Libby and OverDrive are apps that you can use to download e-books and eaudiobooks for free with your library card,” said Smith. “Books are available for (children), teens, and adults. For the preschoolers, (parents) can read along with Tumblebooks and BookFlix.” Carol Wenger, youth and children’s librarian at Pequea Valley Public Library, added that anyone with an active Lancaster County library card may visit www.pvpl.org and click on eResources to find a multitude of great websites including Heritage, Automotive Repair, and Brainfuse. At the Strasburg-Heisler Library, executive director Kristin Fernitz said that due dates for library materials patrons currently have at home have been moved to Wednesday, April 15. The outside drop box is emptied daily, and each returned item is disinfected. “We have cleaned and disinfected all the toys used for the early childhood education programs and all the computers, tables, and chairs,” said Fernitz, who is looking ahead by working on upcoming activities, such as the Summer Reading Program. Also, now that there is time, maybe get to those activities that have been at the bottom of the “to-do” list for what seems like forever. Clean out the basement, the attic, or the garage. Live in an apartment? Clean out the cupboards or closets. Sanitize countertops and other areas in kitchens and bathrooms regularly. Or maybe go through the closet and prepare for warmer weather by weeding out the clothing items that were not worn last year and are ready to be donated. The Wolf Administration reminds Pennsylvanians of food assistance resources available and what actions it is taking to ensure access to food does not stop in spite of the COVID-19 mitigation efforts. This pandemic has caused many people and families to find that they are suddenly food insecure and require assistance. Pennsylvanians who need help feeding themselves or their family should find and contact their local food bank or pantry through Feeding Pennsylvania at www.feedingpa.org and Hunger-Free Pennsylvania at www.hungerfreepa.org. The Department of Human Services (DHS) will continue to process applications and benefit renewals for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Emergency SNAP applications can be expedited and issued in five days. Pennsylvanians can apply for SNAP online at www.compass.state.pa.us. DHS will continue to process application and renewal benefits, so people should continue to send in paperwork as usual. For anyone currently on SNAP who misses a deadline or who is unable to submit the paperwork or complete an interview or provide verifications for any reason during this emergency, DHS will ensure their SNAP benefit continues. DHS submitted a waiver request to the federal Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) to ensure this continuity in benefits. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has provided resources for Pennsylvanians to access emergency food assistance during COVID-19 mitigation, including locations of food banks and food pantries that are assisting individuals and families during this time. To ensure that food banks and community feeding organizations remain operable with healthy volunteers, the department provided guidance for ways to limit contact while providing their essential services.
The Wolf Administration also asks anyone who is healthy and able to consider volunteering with a local food bank or registering for the State Emergency Registry of Volunteers in Pennsylvania, as this time is creating an incredible strain on charitable organizations’ efforts. United Way of Pennsylvania’s 211 website is also compiling a list of organizations that need volunteers or resources so their work can continue. Amidst Wolf’s continued mitigation efforts, including the state-wide closure of non-lifesustaining businesses and the recent stay at home order issued for several Pennsylvania counties, the work being done by food banks and their volunteers is life-sustaining and will continue. The orders do not prohibit food banks and their volunteers from offering food services, nor do they prohibit school districts from offering food services to children during the statewide school closure. Schools and school districts may continue to bring in essential
employees involved in the preparation and distribution of meals for children. The emergency Feeding Task Force, which consists of state agencies, charitable food networks, food retailers, and other partners and stakeholders, is working to identify available resources and provide food and water to communities in need. This includes ensuring school-age children, older adults, and others experiencing food insecurity are provided with nourishing meals. Businesses that have resources to help feed and shelter Pennsylvanians in need are encouraged to fill out a survey to assist the task force as it looks to direct resources. Any Pennsylvanian who is suddenly in need of food should complete this survey so the task force can better understand where resources should be directed. Readers may visit the dedicated coronavirus webpage at www.dhs.pa.gov or www.agri culture.pa.gov for the most upto-date information regarding COVID-19.

The Department of Education recently announced that all schools in Pennsylvania will remain closed indefinitely in order to limit the spread of COVID-19, according to state Sen. Scott Martin. All schools in the state have been closed since March 13. The closure order was in effect through April 6, but this deadline has been extended until further notice. Martin recently supported a bipartisan bill that was signed into law to remove the requirement that all public schools must be open at least 180 days per school year. The new law also gives the Secretary of Education authorization to increase the number of flexible instruction days that may be used by a school district. The state’s 29 intermediate units will continue to be available to provide technical assistance to help develop continuity of education plans for all students.

Giant Supports Hunger Relief Efforts The Giant Company announced recently that it is donating a total of $250,000 to four local hunger relief organizations. The recipients are Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Philabundance, Maryland Food Bank and Meals on Wheels Pennsylvania. These organizations servce people in more than 30 counties within two states as they work through extraordinary circumstances to supply food to hundreds of food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters. During the COVID-19 crisis, the food banks and Meals on Wheels Pennsylvania are building and shipping thousands of prepackaged boxes of healthy shelf stable food, bags of produce, dairy products, and frozen meals for distribution to partner agencies and clients. To minimize the risk of disease transmission, these organizations have terminated food drives at this time, adding to the financial burden. Each organization will use the funds to help address immediate needs including offsetting operational expenses, securing food and ensuring critical food delivery to those in need throughout local communities, especially seniors and children. Customers looking to join The Giant Company and support hunger relief efforts can choose to round up their purchase at selfcheckout to the nearest dollar, with funds benefiting regional food banks. The Giant Company will continue to look for other ways to provide support to its nonprofit partners during this time.

Ron and Joan Denlinger published three books recently, telling the stories of the journey they have been on for the last 35 years. Graduates of Lancaster Bible College and Lancaster General School of Nursing respectively, Ron and Joan’s dream was to serve in medical missions in a developing country. This plan was disrupted by the arrival of Kari, who was born with a profound genetic condition. The event crash-landed them in the unfamiliar and undesired world of disabilities. “Joy in a Foreign Land walks the reader through the Denlingers’ journey of learning to survive in this new territory, which was made even tougher when their second child was also born with the same debilitating illness. Despite the challenges of caring for their children, they started a church planting career, beginning in New England. In their second church ministry, their son, Ryan, passed away. Having experienced two successful church plants, they were asked by their mission to be a resource to other pastors serving in small towns across America. Joan tells of taking the step of faith in leaving behind their comfortable home and moving their family into a travel trailer as their home for the next five

years. “Faith in the Heartland is a story of their life-changing journey of working with churches while homeschooling their third child, Jeremy, and caring for their disabled daughter. After getting an up-close look at many churches across America, many of which were struggling, Ron grew in his passion for healthy churches. Believing the most important thing for a church is to have a close relationship to Jesus, Ron wrote “Have We Lost our Head? - Reconnecting Churches to Jesus. It is filled with many true incidents from churches he has visited. After 25 years of ministry to churches, the Denlingers returned to Lancaster County to be available to care for their parents. The next unknown territory they entered was the world of foster care of children with medical needs. Of the several children they fostered, one of them needed a forever home. They adopted Matthew on his third birthday. They also built an addition to their home, an in-law suite for Joan’s parents, and they are both full-time caregivers to these family members. Through their blog Ron and Joan share about their life. To learn more about the Denlingers, readers may visit www.JoyinaForeignLand.com.

COVID-19 crisis. “We are praying … for our nation that the virus is short lived. We are praying for leaders on federal and state levels,” he said. Following Wolf ’s initial announcement, DCA students were off only three days before resuming their studies from home. According to Stone, staff at the school, which pulls students from 11 Lancaster County school districts, as well as eastern York County, had anticipated that March 13 might be the last day of school for a while. “Our elementary school teachers scrambled to put things together for students to take home just in case,” recalled Stone, who added that the staff met at the school on March 16 to make plans for a hiatus of up to a month. “We called Monday
students work on problems at home before coming to the classroom to complete more problems with individual help from the teacher. Because of this, switching to learning online from home should not be difficult for the students, Stone said. “That’s not a big paradigm shift,” he noted. Stone especially praised DCA’s elementary school teachers, who are generally not as accustomed to teaching online. Calling them “rock stars,” he noted that they jumped in with both feet and prepared lessons quickly for their students. Stone also lauded Leslie Schmucker, director of the school’s PS139 program for students with special needs, noting that Schmucker had a structured program ready for parents of PS139 students by 9 a.m. on March 14. DCA is well known for its Remember America Speaker Series, which had scheduled former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee to speak in Lancaster on Friday, April 17. DCA marketing director Lisa Becker said that the event has been postponed to Saturday, Oct. 10. for students to attend school from home, Stone emphasized balance. “Our primary goal is to utilize technology to facilitate our Principle Approach to education in these unique circumstances,” said Stone. The Principle Approach refers to a focus on consistent and ordered teaching and learning, with the goal of building a student’s Christian character, and biblical reasoning to promote a lifetime of learning and discipleship. In finding a balance, Stone asked teachers to employ the technology the school has been using for more than a decade in new ways. “Our students are accustomed to getting on the computer and following instructions that a teacher has laid out,” he said, noting that for a number of years DCA has employed a concept called the flipped classroom, where teachers introduce a concept by video and

“Abstract Spectrum,” 16-yearold Joseph James Roach’s first solo show, has been rescheduled. Originally set to open with a First Friday reception on April 3, the exhibit will now be unveiled at a reception on Friday, Aug. 7, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Mulberry Art Studios, 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. The exhibit will continue throughout August. It was originally scheduled for April as April is Autism Awareness Month. Joseph, who has autism, struggled at school, trying to find his niche. In eighth grade, his art teacher Julia Hibshman at Manheim Central Middle School gave

him greater freedom to express himself in art. What were at first simply scribbles soon developed into intricate and eye-catching abstract art pieces with the encouragement of Hibshman. A prolific artist, Joseph’s work grew rapidly into a collection of vibrant pieces that became “Abstract Spectrum.” Joseph’s goal is to visit schools and share with struggling students that if they do not give up, amazing things can happen. Ten percent of all proceeds from art sales will be donated to Aaron’s Acres. For more information and to preview the artwork, readers may visit www.mulberryartstudios.com.

Railroad Museum Plans Day Camp The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, is now accepting registrations for the 16th annual Barons and Builders summer day camp, where children gain exposure to a full science, technology, engineering, arts and math experience. Children are immersed in all things railroading during this five-day program, where they explore the museum, railroad history, and the railroad industry through a variety of tours, demonstrations and handson activities.
Campers will be active and involved in the creative and learning process, tour limited-access railroad equipment and areas in the museum, ride round-trip aboard Amtrak from Lancaster on a day trip, design and build model train cars to take home, meet real railroaders to learn about their jobs, and more. Camp will be in session from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, except for the day of the train trip on Amtrak. Barons and Builders summer day camp for children ages 9
and 10 will take place at the museum from Monday, July 13, to Friday, July 17, while camp for children ages 11 and 12 will be held from Monday, July 27, to Friday, July 31. Sponsors of this year’s Barons and Builders are Marino J. III and Stephanie Acri. Participation will be limited to 16 campers per session on a first-come basis. A cost per camper has been set for current Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania members, with a higher cost for nonmembers. Registration forms are available at www.RRMuseumPA.org. More information is also available by calling 717-687-8628.
