Treating The Troops By Ann Mead Ash
While the celebration of Independence Day on July 4 may have made Americans think back to the moment in Philadelphia in 1776 when the Founding Fathers declared citizens of the 13 colonies free from English rule, owners of several Lancaster County bed-and- breakfasts were thinking of those serving overseas. At least four local innkeepers joined in an Independence Day initiative that sent cookies, socks, banana bread, and toothpaste to members of the U.S. military deployed overseas in an effort dubbed “Inn Support of Our Troops.” Rebecca Gallagher of the Historic
Smithton Inn, 900 W. Main St., Ephrata, said she jumped at the chance to take part in the project, noting that “veterans are a soft spot for me.” Rebecca, who owns the inn with her husband, Dave, served as co-chair of the committee that built Veterans Plaza in Ephrata with the Winters Leadership Memorial statue as the centerpiece. After completion of the project, the group held a lecture series that gave area veterans a chance to share their stories. Each Veterans Day for a decade, the inn has reserved all seven guest rooms for free to veterans. “We love being able to give back and thank vets personally,” she said. For the initiative, Rebecca sent a collection of the sweet breads she

Now more than ever, thanks to jobs and wages lost while the stay-at-home order was in place, resources for people experiencing homelessness or at risk of
losing their homes are in demand. Thankfully, Good Samaritan Services (GSS), which serves individuals and families in Lancaster and Chester counties who have poverty-related needs, is prepared to help. See Golf Outing pg 5
The annual EPC Golf Outing on Sept. 25 will benefit Good Samaritan Services, which provides a range of services to assist individuals overcoming homelessness in Lancaster and Chester counties.

In the past, Lititz Area Mennonite School (LAMS) annual benefit auctions were held at the school, 1050 E. Newport Road, Lititz, on a Friday evening and during the day Saturday at the end of May or early June. This year, however, the auction will be held online. Bids may be placed from Monday, July 20 through Saturday, July 25. “The (auction) is going to look a bit different this year,” wrote organizer Karen Burkholder in a press release. “With COVID-19 (restrictions) shutting down schools, we had to rethink how we would hold our annual (fundraiser).” See LAMS Auction pg 3

During the auction, tickets will be sold to two special meals that will resemble the traditional Friday night meal and Saturday morning breakfast that have been held during the auction. Tickets are necessary to attend these events. The breakfast will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, at LAMS. The second will be a dinner theater held on Saturday, Oct. 17. “The (dinner) meal consists of roast beef, chicken, green beans, gourmet potatoes, and more,” wrote Burkholder. Following the dinner, there will be entertainment by Ryan and Friends. Burkholder noted that funds raised by the auction will help keep tuition costs down to allow more students to receive a Christian education at LAMS. Organizers hope to raise $150,000 from the event. She added that the decision was made in March when the committee, knowing the May date for the live auction was approaching, realized that restrictions would prevent the event from happening. “ We talked about a lot of different options,” Burkholder recalled. “(We) decided that going with an online auction looked like a good choice.” The online auction will feature many of the same categories of items as the live auction has in the past. Categories range from jewelry and home furnishings to kayaks and hunting bows. Gift certificates will be sold, and there will be special men’s and women’s auctions, as well as a children’s auction. Theme baskets, which have always been popular, will go up for bids as well. Special features this year will include a weekend getaway in Ocean City, N.J.; tickets to Eagles games; cornhole sets; a Traeger grill; and specialty meals, which include a pool party and dinner.

VisionCorps Produces Masks VisionCorps is now producing non-surgical, reusable face masks to help during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been awarded production orders and contracts by Lancaster County and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. VisionCorps already had a sewing production line and was able to transition and ramp up quickly to begin producing masks and have the capacity to produce more, if needed. A recent order with Lancaster County calls for VisionCorps to produce 50,000 masks. The face masks are also available for purchase by Commonwealth of Pennsylvania agencies and municipalities and are listed on UniqueSource, the required sourcing site for products and services purchased and used by
state entities. VisionCorps is completing state contracts for masks and expects additional business opportunities. The masks are made of cloth and elastic and can be washed and reused. They meet mask specifications put out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines. The new face mask production is part of the VisionCorps’ Enterprise Group (EG) production lines, creating employment opportunities primarily for individuals who are blind or visionimpaired. The EG business lines also help fund services for people who are blind or vision-impaired in Lancaster, Chester, Lebanon, York, and Adams counties. VisionCorps’ mask production
line partnered with Dutchware, a local company, in a new collaboration to cut out the patterns for the face masks. VisionCorps sends Dutchware rolls of material and the company uses its laser cutters and stacking equipment to cut out mask patterns. Nonprofits and other tax-exempt groups are invited to contact VisionCorps at orders@visioncorps.net to purchase face masks. The masks are available in packs of 50 and can be purchased by searching for “Non-Surgical Face Masks with elastic” at www.costore.com/UniqueSource Store/welcome.asp. Organizations that need smaller quantities may be interested in working with another group and sharing the face masks.

“Like many other events this year, we were faced with the decision to cancel or reschedule our event,” Hillegas commented. “We know how much this event impacts families right here in our Lancaster County and Chester County communities, so we made the decision to reschedule the June outing for September. The health and safety of our golfers and volunteers was the main driving force behind this decision, and we look forward to what a fall golf outing for this event will look like.” The Tee It Forward contest hole that was introduced last year will be continued. Hillegas noted that while this year’s event will include bag lunches from Trio Bar and Grill, chicken barbecue from Peters’ BBQ will also be available. Chicken barbecue had been a feature of the EPC Golf Outings a few years ago, and Hillegas and her team are pleased to bring it back. “We provide a wide spectrum of services that are customizable to each individual or family at whatever place they are at in their journey to stability,” said Shadoe Settle, GSS development and communications coordinator. “Our services are always expanding. Right now, we provide emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support services to men, women, and families in Lancaster and Chester counties. Serving men is a new ability in Lancaster County, and we are very excited about it.” Although the need for the services provided by GSS has increased, the organization has been able to keep the lives of its existing participants stable, thanks to support from the community. “Our ability to provide support and guidance during this
increase, Settle said. The nonprofit organization depends on donations and fundraisers to operate. One such fundraiser is the golf outing hosted by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). “Our partnership with EPC and their willingness to organize such a wonderful event has been an incredible blessing, financially and relationally,” Settle remarked. “This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, and it has continued to provide funds needed to perform all of our services.” “We recognize the impact that this nonprofit has on our own neighbors in the same areas that we serve as a company,” said EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “We’re honored to build this relationship with GSS to assist them in aiding families right here in our community.” The 2019 EPC Golf Outing raised $20,000, and the goal this year is to meet or surpass that total with the help of golfers and sponsors, Hillegas said. The 13th annual EPC Golf Outing will be held on Friday, Sept. 25, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times of 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. are available. The event had initially been planned for June.

The pair noted that they have always supported the military by giving free rooms each year to veterans near Veterans Day and offering a discount to active-duty military year round. “We felt the need to support this endeavor,” they said. The owners intend to continue the effort by making monthly gifts to active military members. Jan Garrabrandt, who owns The Artist’s Inn and Gallery, 117 E. Main St., Terre Hill, with her husband. Bruce, sent chocolate chip cookies and a dozen pairs of socks to an armed services member in mid-June. Both her father and her husband’s father served in the Army. “We try to support the military in several ways,” said Jan, who noted that a discount is available to veterans booking any room on any day of the year. “We also participate in the free rooms for veterans program for Veterans
and ultimately to trust in God for their hope and future,” she said. Inn Support of Our Troops was organized by Maria Coder, a public relations professional working with the Association of Lodging Professionals (ALP). The effort brought together more than 30 inns across the U.S. Inn Support of Our Troops worked with Soldiers’ Angels participating as Angel Bakers, which gave volunteers access to a database with the first name and state of a service member who had expressed interest in receiving baked goods. Soldiers’ Angels is a national charity providing aid, comfort, and resources to the military, veterans, and their families. Many of the participating inns were closed during the pandemic, which led to income loss and even financial hardship. The Inn Support of Our Troops effort gave bed-and-breakfast owners a chance to showcase their talents and reach out to members of the military serving far from home.

Hiestand House Bed & Breakfast, 722 E. Market St., Marietta, went for variety in their donation, sending a box stuffed with peanut butter oatmeal cookies, beef jerky, pork rinds, cheese crisps, hot sauce, green tea, ground coffee, candy, a mug, wet wipes, socks, and disposable razors as a care package to a service member in the Air Force stationed in Afghanistan.
Day by giving away all the rooms at the inn to veterans. We’ve been doing this since we opened 24 years ago,” Jan said. Brenda Miller, proprietor of the Brownstone Colonial Inn, 590 Galen Hall Road, Reinholds, baked a fresh batch of chocolate chip and butterscotch chip cookies on the morning of June 23 to mail to a member of the military. She also enclosed a new pair of wool socks as packing and included a letter thanking the young man for his service. This was not Miller’s first effort to support the troops. “Recently a young man from our church enlisted in the Marines, and we have been praying for him, along with other service personnel who have so graciously given of their time to protect our great nation,” she said, adding that the opportunity to bake for an assigned member of the service was the least she could do to show support. “I hope to encourage our military to be courageous, to stand firm,

The young men and their projects are True Herbert, 18, son of Derrick and Ellen Herbert of Willow Street, who organized maintenance projects to help renovate low-income properties and provide bags of food and toiletry items to the residents who live there; Colin Meldrum, 16, son of Kent and Alyson Meldrum of Lancaster, who planned, organized, and carried out the planting of over 300 trees and shrubs in Drumore Township Park; Coleman McBride, 17, son of Adam and Brenda McBride of Elizabethtown, who organized donations of colorful socks that were donated to the Clare House Women’s Shelter in honor of a young woman who had been killed in a car accident while serving a mission for her church; Miles Bushey, 13, son of Eddie and Leah Bushey of Hallam, who organized the refinishing of benches and picnic tables in Glen Rock Park by removing the old paint and then repainting them; Nathan Gubbins, 15, son of Marissa and John Gubbins of

for honey bees and other pollinators, which will in turn pollinate local farm fields. The Giant Company also announced a new strategic partnership with Planet Bee Foundation. Based in San Francisco, Planet Bee is a nonprofit organization focused on driving awareness for pollinators while creating environmental stewards of all ages, in turn contributing to the well-being of bees. In celebration of the new partnership and National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company announced a $50,000 donation to Planet Bee Foundation. Planet Bee Foundation has constructed the beehives for the pollinator-friendly solar field and will tend to the health of the colonies as the bees provide their essential pollinator services to the local ecosystem. The foundation is also helping the Giant Company develop educational signs that will be installed along the on-campus walking path to drive awareness about the importance of bees to the grocery and agricultural supply chains.
Camp Invention, a nationally recognized, nonprofit summer enrichment camp program, is changing its in-person program at two local sites to an all-new, at-home edition of the program called Camp Invention Connect. Camp Invention Connect balances active, independent handson exploration with opportunities for socialization from home. The programs scheduled at Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 and Cornwall Elementary School will be changed to Camp Invention Connect instead. Both programs will run from Monday, July 13, through Friday, July 17. A hybrid program featuring both offline activities and optional online sessions, Camp Invention Connect enables hands-on exploration by delivering a set of four activity kits, packed full of materials, directly to each participant. The themed kits, based on the 2020 Elevate curriculum from Camp Invention, include materials designed to bring imagination, creative problem solving, and fun to children. The 2020 curriculum includes the modules Camp Invention Flight Lab, Design Thinking Project, Rescue Squad, and Camp Invention Champions. Young innovators choosing the Camp Invention Connect experience will take on indoor and outdoor challenges that minimize screen time and maximize creativity, collaborate virtually with friends to complete exciting challenges, and receive real-time coaching and collaboration with certified educators. the new solar array coupled with the one currently installed on the roof of the Giant Company headquarters will reduce 4.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide in the environment and generate enough power for the entire building. Native seed mixes provided by Ernst Conservation Seeds will act as a vegetative solution to beautify the site and provide valuable ecological functions. The Giant Company hopes the native meadow established will create a habitat for pollinators, birds and other small wildlife while improving the quality of the soil beneath it, reducing runoff and creating an attractive backdrop to the site. The field includes more than 20 varieties of wildflowers native to the northeast and central Pennsylvania like butterfly milkweed, mountain mint, blue mistflower and golden Alexander. Robin Ernst, president of Ernst Pollinator Service, explained that as the field matures over the next few years, more than one million pollinator-attracting plants will provide pollen and nectar sources

A pollinator field provides Giant with an opportunity to educate team members, customers and the community about the role bees play in getting food onto their family’s table, noted Nicholas Bertram, president of the Giant Company. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture deputy secretary Cheryl Cook added that nearly one-third of the nation’s food supply depends on pollinators, making bees an essential part of the food supply chain and ecosystem. The Giant Company has also been selected as the first grocery retailer and first Pennsylvania participant to take part in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s InSPIRE study, where scientists measure and track the performance of the pollinator-friendly ground cover for applications to future solar energy projects. In celebration of National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company recently announced it has completed a 7-acre pollinator-friendly solar field at its corporate headquarters at 1149 Harrisburg Pike in Carlisle. This initiative aims to create a synergistic environment, which contributes both to clean energy and support for bee and pollinator populations needed within the agriculture industry. Honey bees pollinate $15 billion worth of food crops in the United States each year, yet populations have been experiencing a decline for more than three decades, the Giant Company reported. Beekeepers across the United States lost an estimated 40.7% of their honey bee colonies from April 2018 to April 2019, according to the latest annual nationwide survey conducted by the University of Maryland-led nonprofit Bee Informed Partnership.
