Cavod Campers To Stage “Mary Poppins Jr.” By Ann Mead Ash

Cavod Academy’s second 2019 summer musical theater camp has yet to begin, but Cordell Huyard, who will direct the camp’s production of “Mary Poppins Jr.,” is already praising the cast. “The cast is already blending well,” said Cordell, noting that the group had met for a read-through. “This is one of the strongest dance groups we have ever had in a junior show. We have a lot of triple threats in this cast,” he said, referring to performers who are proficient at singing, dancing, and acting. The cast, which is made up of Lancaster County students ages 10 to 18, will begin

In 2010, Michelle McGovern went through the devastating agony of her first child, a son named Liam, being stillborn at 21.5 weeks. “They said it’s like being struck by lightning; it can never happen again,” recalled Michelle. As she and her husband, Mike, grieved the loss of their son, a co-worker whose daughter had experienced the loss of a child through a miscarriage told Michelle about Sarah’s Laughter, a nonprofit that offers faith-based support to couples struggling with infertility or the death of a baby. Since no groups were meeting locally then, Michelle signed up to receive emails from the organization, and as time went on she more or less forgot about Sarah’s Laughter. Michelle gave birth to her daughter, Violet, in 2012, with no complications. “She was a picture-perfect pregnancy,” noted Michelle. Her labor and delivery with Violet went quickly - something that Michelle laughs about now because of how much it reflects her daughter’s enthusiastic personality. In 2015 and 2016, however, Mike and Michelle suffered the loss of two children through miscarriages and again waded through the immense sorrow that accompanies such losses. To honor the legacy of Liam, as well as their other children, and to help other couples experiencing the loss of a child through stillbirth, the McGoverns donated a Cuddle Cot to The Women’s Place at Heart of Lancaster in 2016 and another to Women & Babies Hospital in 2017. “We did the two Cuddle Cot donations, but I wanted to do something more regularly (to help other women),” Michelle said. As Michelle rediscovered Sarah’s Laughter and began regularly listening to the organization’s podcast, which features interviews with people who understand infertility and child loss, See Sarah’s Laughter pg 4 Ephrata

from the children. “Anyone 18 or younger who lives in the Conestoga Valley School District may be served, said Trout. Feeding up to 100 children three days per week requires manpower. “We usually have at least three people (at a site), said Trout, noting that one person is designated as the site supervisor and that all the program workers are volunteers. In addition to site workers, volunteers are needed to cook and pack lunches at CVCCS, 2420 Gehman Lane, Lancaster. “All food is made from scratch or made in house, said Trout. Six to eight volunteers meet at the CVCCS kitchen at 9:30 a.m. on the days lunches are served to cook and pack. Three drivers then transport lunches to the sites, and other drivers pick up the coolers and other items following lunch to return them to CVCCS. Trout noted that the program has been blessed with volunteers. “Previously, we had four sites, but when the site at Faith Church (was no longer needed), the volunteers came to Flory to help, said Trout. CVCCS will be happy to accept donations of food, volunteer help, and funds for the summer lunch program. Readers who would like to learn more about CVCCS and its programs may search for CVCCS on Facebook, visit http:// cvccs.org, or call 717-208-3711.

The tricky part is finding the most cost-effective meals while maintaining nutrition and serving food children want to eat, she added. Lunches that have been served so far this summer have included walking tacos, which include protein, dairy, and carbohydrates. “Pizza is always popular, said Trout, noting that quesadillas, sandwiches, and raw vegetables, such as carrot sticks with ranch dressing, are often served. A group of local women also makes cookies for the children, and one couple recently donated homemade gluten-free cookies. The children also receive milk to drink. Along with lunch, site volunteers bring items that can be used to engage the children in fun activities. “We have sidewalk chalk today, said Trout, who noted that site volunteers may bring games or crafts for the children to try. “Some of the children don’t have anywhere to go (to keep busy). Sarah’s Laughter from pg 1 she began to consider starting a group in Lancaster. “(Sarah’s Laughter founder) Beth Forbus will say on the podcast, ‘If you’re thinking about starting a group in your town, get in touch with us,’” Michelle said. “I told Mike, ‘I don’t think I can NOT do this now.’” So in September 2017, Michelle bravely took the plunge to start a local Sarah’s Laughter infertility and child loss support group. “I knew that there had to be a need,” she said. “I knew how much I struggled with my losses, and I didn’t want anyone to walk through that alone.” Any woman who is experiencing infertility or grief related to miscarriage or stillbirth is welcome to attend a meeting of Sarah’s Laughter - Lancaster on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at Community Fellowship Church, 200 Bethel Drive, Lancaster. “As women, (having children) is sort of a thing we expect we will be able to do, and when it doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to, it can be easy to feel shame. There are so many different scenarios, but we all have stuff in common and having those sort of ‘me too’ moments can be so helpful,” shared Michelle. “It’s the validation of

having someone say, ‘I’ve thought that too. You’re not crazy.’ That validation lifts a weight off your shoulders.” In 2018, Michelle was thrilled to find out she was pregnant, but on May 24, 2018, the McGoverns’ daughter, Juliet Rose, was born still. They miss her greatly and continue to navigate that grief on a daily basis. Michelle encourages people who know someone experiencing infertility or child loss not to ignore it or pretend that it is not happening. “If you’re not sure what to say, just say, ‘I don’t know what to say because I don’t want to hurt you, but I want you to know that I care. I remember what you’re going through.’ And check in once in a while. “One thing I say (at Sarah’s Laughter) is that we don’t compare,” said Michelle, emphasizing that no matter what a woman’s story may be or where she is in her journey, she is welcome. “Walking through that door is the hardest part, but you’re not alone.” For more information on Sarah’s Laughter - Lancaster, readers may visit www.facbook .com/SarahsLaughterLancaster or www.sarahs-laughter.com /lancastercountypa.

Cavod Campers from pg 1 “Mary Poppins,” a musical, is based on the book by P.L. Travers, which is the pen name adopted by Helen Lyndon Goff, a British novelist whose childhood experiences provided inspiration for the story of Mary Poppins. Travers’ books were adapted by Walt Disney in 1964 into a musical film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. The stage musical ran on Broadway from 2006 to 2013. The play tells the story of the Banks family in London. The family is struggling with two difficult children, Jane and Michael, played by Cate Caplan and Josiah Henne, respectively. The children who have managed to derail every nanny their parents have hired. While George Banks, played by Charlie Hill, insists on a strict nanny, the children are intrigued when the mysterious Mary Poppins, played by Celeste Huyard, appears at their doorstep. Following her lead, the children experience a series of memorable adventures, accompanied by Mary’s sidekick, Bert, played by Gavin Haas, that impact the entire family, including the mother, Winifred Banks, played by Hannah Whisman. Cordell said he chose the classic show because of the fun experience it will offer campers and because of the wisdom it offers to people of all ages. “There are great lessons in it,” noted

Cordell. He also wanted to introduce campers to the efforts required to produce a rigorous show such as “Mary Poppins.” “The challenges are living up to the expectation, making it your own, and capturing the magic of Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke,” said Cordell. “(There’s a challenge in) bringing (the show) to life on stage (with a cast of) young people.” According to Cordell, the play is somewhat different from the well-known movie, with a few songs added and others changed slightly, but keeping all the magic of the original. “All the things you love are in there,” said Cordell, who listed “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “Step in Time,” and “Chim Chim Cher-ee” among the many musical numbers. Music direction for the show will be provided by Amy Rau, and Stephanie Morales will choreograph the dance numbers. Cordell invites area families to make the trip to Manheim to see the show. “Bring the children to The Junction Center,” he said. “It’s a cool space, and you get to see where WJTL broadcasts from.” Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at https://cavod.org or by calling 717-354-3355. Tickets may also be available at the door.

When singer-songwriter Kiana Corley saw that the Crispus Attucks Community Center had been forced to cut back its meal service from five to two days a week, she told her mother, concert pianist Maria Thompson Corley, that she wanted to do something about it. The two musicians gathered local performing artists to present a concert on June 2 at the First United Methodist Church in Lancaster. Exactly two months later, on Friday, Aug. 2, at 7:30 p.m., the women will host another edition of “Setting the Table,” this one at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. In addition to performances by the Corleys, the concert

Maria Thompson Corley

will include singers Anne Kempsell, Jeremiah Miller, Megan and Jay Poff, David Miron, and Rachel Rune Farmer. The program will open with a choral piece featuring Jennifer Mattson and will continue with music selections in many styles, such as classical, pop, jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues, and Broadway musical, both sung and instrumental. Additional musicians will include Christy Banks, clarinet; Bradley Mattson, trumpet; Matt Monticchio, piano; Tom Hilliker, bass; and Mitch Cooper, drums. Marian Villieux will perform a dance. Tickets are available for the performance at no charge. Donations will be accepted for the Crispus Attucks Community Center (CACC), which is a program of Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County (CAPLANC). According to https://caplanc.org, the CACC food bank collaborates with CAPLANC and the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank to provide nutritious food to members of the community twice a month. The food bank is open every second and fourth Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. for seniors and disabled individuals and from 4 to 6 p.m. for others who need support. Additionally, the Crispus Attucks Café

is open from 11 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays to provide free meals to the community. Churches, mosques, synagogues, and other community-based organizations cook meals to help the CACC continue its collective support to feed the community on weekends and holidays. Maria Thompson Corley is a pianist, composer, arranger, and writer. A graduate of The Juilliard School, she has appeared on radio, television, and concert stages in Canada, the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, Bermuda, and Europe, both as a solo artist and as a collaborative artist. She has released several albums. “Dreamer” includes countertenor Darryl Taylor, “Soulscapes” features piano music by African American women, and a third album records the first 12 of H. Leslie Adams’ “Twenty-Six Etudes for Solo Piano.” Thompson Corley’s recording of “Troubled Water” by Margaret Bonds was featured in the HBO Family documentary “Kabreeya’s Salad Days,” and her performance of the “Etude in CSharp Minor” by Adams is included in the documentary “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am.” Kiana Corley is a 21-year old musician based out of Lancaster. She draws from the stylings of

Corinne Bailey Rae, Tori Kelly, Lianne La Havas, Eryn Allen Kane, and other similar-sounding artists. Her sound can best be described as acoustic soul intertwined with twinges of pop. She suggested that these influences, along with her entire heart on her sleeve, can all be detected on her debut EP “One Way.” To reserve tickets for “Setting the Table,” readers may call the box office at 717-871-7600, visit www.ArtsMU.com, or visit the box office at the Ware Center on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or in the Student Memorial Center, Room 103, 1 S. George St., Millersville, on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

As visitors walk into “The Power of Children: Making a Difference, a new traveling exhibition at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster, they will experience the powerful stories of Anne Frank, Ruby Bridges, and Ryan White. Although alive in different places and times, each child endured extreme prejudice and made a positive impact on the world. The exhibit is designed to encourage children and families to explore problems of isolation, fear, and prejudice by giving a face to the Holocaust, the Civil Rights movement, and the AIDS epidemic. Audiovisual presentations, original artifacts, and hands-on interactives will help visitors to learn what it was like to live through the traumatic circumstances that each child endured. The exhibit recreates spaces where each child felt safe. For Anne Frank, exhibit designers chose the building where her family spent two years in hiding from the Nazis. Born in Germany in 1929, Anne went into hiding with her family in 1942. They remained in hiding for 25 months until they were discovered and sent to concentration camps. Anne’s bestselling diary is a testament to the power of words. Visitors will get to explore aspects of the first-grade classroom where Ruby Bridges spent an entire school year alone with her teacher. In 1960, Ruby was one of four girls chosen to integrate the public school system in New Orleans, but she was the only one to attend the all-white William Frantz Public School. She was accompanied by four United States marshals each day as she entered her classroom, walking through an angry mob of protesters who were upset by the Supreme Court order to let black and white children go to school together. As an adult, Ruby established the Ruby Bridges Foundation to promote tolerance of differences and provide educa-

tional resources to children, teachers, and parents nationwide. Finally, visitors will learn about Ryan White, an Indiana teenager whose life brought a voice to the deadly disease of AIDS in the 1980s. As a result of his willingness to speak out, the media and celebrities took up the cause, helping to educate people about the facts of AIDS. Ryan was diagnosed with hemophilia when he was a few days old. After catching pneumonia at age 13 in 1984, he consequently found out he had contracted AIDS from tainted Factor VIII. North Museum exhibits manager Libby Stoesz said that although the exhibit is recommended for children age 8 and older and their families because of being serious in nature, the stories featured can be great conversation starters for children of any age. “It’s good to get kids talking and learning, especially about differences and how you should not bully another kid

because he’s different or sick, Stoesz said. “You can be handed some really hard cards in life, like each of these kids were, continued Stoesz. “These three children were a voice, but they didn’t do it alone. The end of the exhibit challenges visitors to consider how they can make a difference. The exhibit is made possible through NEH on the Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH), and the Mid-America Arts Alliance. “The Power of Children: Making a Difference was organized by the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. The exhibit opened on June 16 and will remain on display at the North Museum through Sunday, Aug. 11. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. For more information, readers may visit www.northmuseum.org.

Through Aug. 11, the North Museum of Nature and Science in Lancaster will feature “The Power of Children: Making a Difference, a traveling exhibition highlighting the lives of Anne Frank, Ruby Bridges, and Ryan White.

Lancaster Early Education Center in Lancaster (LEEC) has earned accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). NAEYC accreditation is a rigorous and transformative quality-improvement system that uses a set of 10 research-based standards to collaborate with early education programs to recognize and drive quality improvement in early learning environments. More than 7,000 programs are currently accredited by NAEYC-less than 10 percent of all child care centers, preschools, and kindergartens nationally achieve this recognition. To earn NAEYC Accreditation, Lancaster Early Education Center went through an extensive selfstudy and quality-improvement process, followed by an on-site visit by NAEYC assessors to verify and ensure that the program met each of the 10 program standards and hundreds of corresponding individual criteria. NAEYC-accredited programs are always prepared for unannounced quality assurance visits during their accreditation term, which lasts for five years. For more information about NAEYC accreditation, readers may visit www.naeyc.org. For more information about Lancaster Early Education Center, readers may visit www.leec.org.

Fresh Express Program To Offer Food In striving to provide nutritious food to neighbors in need, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank operates an extensive Fresh Express Program that directly supports low-income communities. Since these products have a short shelf life, the Food Bank collaborates with partner agencies to distribute more than 10 million pounds of fresh produce and dairy products received annually from both local and national donors directly to neighbors in need. This year-round program provides nutritious foods to more than 14,000 individuals at 99 distribution sites in 21 counties. Depending on the harvest season, volunteers distribute a variety of perishable items such as potatoes, onions, lettuce, apples, strawberries and yogurt. Last year, nearly 10.2 million pounds of produce and 2.2 million servings of fresh milk were distributed. The Fresh Express Program follows income guidelines to determine eligibility. There are currently five distribution sites at different times of the month in Lancaster County, and preregistration is required. Distributions will take place as follows: fourth Friday of the month from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Park Elementary School, 50 S. Couple To Bicycle Across Country By Chelsea Peifer

Bicycling across the United States has always been a dream of Erin Steinweg’s, and this summer that dream will come to fruition as she and her fiancé, Garrett Collins, make the trek across the country. The pair will fly to the West Coast in August to set off on a self-supported bicycle ride from Eugene, Ore., to Yorktown, Va. Steinweg and Collins will be on the road for approximately 60 days to cover a total of 4,200 miles - all while carrying their own tents, sleeping bags, and other supplies. “We weren’t sure when we would get to do it, because there are three main things you need to do a trip like this: time, money, and health,” explained Collins. “But we both had time off and everything else just came into place, so we’re really excited to be going now.” Steinweg, 22, graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2015 and from Messiah College in May with a degree in biology. Steinweg is in the process of applying to physician assistant graduate programs. Collins, 24, graduated from Lebanon Valley College with his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in May and decided to delay his job search a bit so he and Steinweg could bike across the country. Collins, who completed a portion of this bicycling journey with a friend a few years ago, noted, “It’s really amazing some of the people you’ll meet along the way.” For Collins, that included someone trying to set a record while riding a unicycle and members of a group from Harvard University who were using bicycle touring to travel into various parts of the country to

The group is open to new or seasoned homeschool mothers, and current members are from Lancaster, Berks, York, and Chester counties. It has expanded and can welcome new members until Saturday, Aug. 10. To learn more, readers may visit www.revivalmoms.com.

Spotted Lanternfly Tips Posted

Beginning on Aug. 6, Erin Steinweg (left) and Garrett Collins plan to bicycle approximately 4,200 miles from the Pacific coast of Oregon to the Atlantic coast of Virginia in about 60 days. The couple will raise funds to support Lifecycles, a Lancaster-based organization that mentors youths through bicycling experiences. teach at-risk children. As Steinweg and Collins ride, they will be raising awareness of and money for Lifecycles, a mentoring program based in Lancaster County that uses bicycling as a means to instill character in young adults. “We wanted to use this trip as an opportunity to raise money for an organization that brings honor to God,” Steinweg shared. “We wanted to make it bigger than just ourselves.” Volunteers from Lifecycles lead weekly rides for teenage boys in Landisville, Marietta, and New Holland and for girls in Lititz. A free meal is served, and bicycles, See Cross-Country pg 14

Back-To-School

Penn State Extension researchers have reported that the hatching of spotted lanternfly eggs in Pennsylvania is mostly complete for this season, and the nymphal stages of the insect are evident in Lancaster County, as well as in counties across southeast Pennsylvania, northern Delaware and west-central New Jersey. The earliest instar of spotted lanternfly (SLF), which began appearing in late April, is about the size of a tick and is black with small white spots. Two more stages follow, identical except for slightly larger size. The fourth instar is red with black and white spots and is about a half-inch long and is just now making an appearance. These four nymphs can hop but cannot fly. They feed on tender plant tissues, gradually moving to woody plants and trees as their greater size allows them to feed through bark. By mid- to late July, the fourth instars will transform into the adult, which has wings and can feed on mature trees. The spotted lanternfly is an invasive insect that affects gardens and landscape plants as well as important Pennsylvania commodities. The quarantine for spotted lanternfly has expanded to include 14 counties in southeastern Pennsylvania as well as a few counties in neighboring states. It has continued to proliferate in some areas within the quarantined area. The strategy from the beginning has been to contain the invasion while Penn State scientists and other researchers around the world work to unravel the biology of this insect. The goal is to find safe and effective controls both for commercial growers and for homeowners. Recently, researchers have discovered two fungal pathogens that attack and kill spotted lanternfly. More research is ongoing to further evaluate if this can be utilized to reduce populations of spotted lanternfly. A concern from the beginning of this

Sale!

invasion has been that there will be an overreaction of widespread chemical use, which itself could be a risk. Beth Finlay, area Master Gardener coordinator for Penn State Extension, explains that SLF is not difficult to kill chemically, but that the same insecticides that many homeowners might employ are lethal to butterflies, bees, and other pollinators and can find their way up the food chain to birds and other wildlife. For most residents, Penn State Master Gardeners recommend simple mechanical management in lieu of chemical management. Stomping, swatting, or hosing with a sharp water blast can kill or disable thousands of SLF without introducing toxic products. There are situations that might justify use of pesticides. If so, Penn State researchers urge residents to use only registered pesticide products and to follow the label instructions carefully. Residents may also consider hiring a licensed applicator, who will have access to Penn State Extension’s current professional guidelines. In addition, banding trees with sticky flypaper will capture hundreds of nymphs and adults, since the feeding habit of all stages is to feed, drop to the ground, and climb up tree trunks to feed again. One simple threeto-five-inch band placed about chest level is sufficient. Penn State warns that there is a risk of capturing songbirds, bats, butterflies and other desirable creatures on the sticky tapes, and it cautions that every band should have a cage of chicken wire or hardware cloth placed around the tree, outside the band, to keep wildlife off the tape. For detailed factsheets on SLF and for customized advice on how to deal with infestations, homeowners may call Penn State Master Gardener Garden Hotline at 717-394-6851 or visit https://extension .psu.edu/spotted-lanternfly.
