SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
MHALC Offers CMAP By Ann Mead Ash
During the COVID-19 shutdown, the Steinman Foundation wanted to respond to the needs of the community. One way the organization chose to do that was to focus on mental health, with a goal of making sure community residents felt supported in unprecedented times. The foundation reached out to Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) to bring a Community Mental Health Assistance Plan (CMAP) to local workers. “They partnered with us because we

had relationships with service providers and we’re able to support individuals beyond the project,” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of MHALC. MHALC turned to Philhaven/WellSpan as a consultant. “WellSpan runs an Employee Assistance Program (EAP),” explained McDevitt, who added that the organization provided a lot of guidance in the best way to execute the plan, especially emphasizing that less than a quarter of each patient’s session should be spent on paperwork. “We wanted it devoted to getting to the (patient’s) story,” said McDevitt. “We want people to feel comfortable and to walk away with some tools, skills, and ideas on how to move forward with the angst or fear that they have.” See MHALC pg 4
Church Plans Free Sweets Thirstdays By Ann Mead Ash
Brian Willison, lead pastor of Speedwell Heights Brethren in Christ Church, 413 W. Brubaker Valley Road, Lititz, is very specific about the reasons behind the church’s new ministry called Free Sweets Thirstdays. “We want (those who travel Brubaker Valley Road) to know if they need help - physical, emotional, spiritual - (that) we’re here for them,” said Willison. “That’s what we want to communicate.” To reach into the community, Willison, along with community impact pastor Bonner Davis and Willison’s growth group, have planned Free Sweet Thirstdays for the two Thursdays each month from 7 to 9 a.m. from August through November. Jingyi Zhu is the recipient of the 2020 Landis Homes Art Student Scholarship Award. Her artwork was selected by the resident art committee. The winning piece is a still life in colored pencil. In May, Zhu graduated
from Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) as a member of the Class of 2020. “The little plant that I drew I bought at a subway station in New York City,” said Zhu of the inspiration for her artwork. “It was my first time visiting the city and my first time traveling with friends.” Zhu added that she does not know what kind of plant she captured in her creation. “I bought it because it’s little and cute, and the pink on the leaves looks beautiful,” she said. Zhu is from Beijing, China, where she returned for the summer. In the fall, she plans to attend the University of See Landis Homes pg 2

Shady Maple Celebrates Milestone By Ann Mead Ash
In 1962, Henry and Edna Martin opened a produce stand along Route 23 in East Earl, under the shade of two large maple trees in their front yard. By the late 1960s, the Martins’ daughter, Miriam, had married Lebanon County native Marvin Weaver, and the pair had taken over the stand. According to Ashley Hopkins, marketing manager with Shady Maple Company, Marvin had a saying: “Pile it high, and watch it fly.” The saying See Shady Maple pg 9
The Weaver family, including (front, from left) Miriam, Marvin, (back) Phillip, Curt, and Linford, are celebrating 50 years since the opening of the Shady Maple Farm Market as a produce stand owned by Miriam’s parents, Henry and Edna Martin.

now, she said. Lancaster County residents who are in need of professional support may call MHALC at 717-397-7461 on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. for an intake form. “You will talk to one of our navigators who will help you identify a therapist, said McDevitt. Thompson will recommend a therapist, and CMAP will provide three free confidential counseling sessions. The client will call the provider for an appointment, but MHALC will send out a resource packet to the client and follow up to provide additional support as needed.

Thompson said that if the client wishes to continue after three sessions, she has a list of insurances the providers will accept. “If they don’t have insurance, we are partnering with Lancaster Osteopathic Health for their copay assistance program, said Thompson. “That information is included in the resource packet I send out. According to Thompson, more than 30% of people in the United States experience
anxiety on a regular basis, ranging from fear of insects to extreme social anxiety. She noted that anxiety and depression are common responses to a pandemic, but isolation during a season when people are used to being outdoors with others compounds those issues. “We can’t function on a typical seasonal level, Thompson said. “A lot of parents don’t know how to handle the financial aspect of going back to work and (supporting

MHALC hired Caryn Thompson to be the project coordinator. In early May, she began researching the best way to implement the program, amassing a list of nearly 70 providers, which was reduced to 10 providers based on grant applications. The final list represents a variety, from groups to individuals, with providers that offer bilingual services, those who focus on seniors, one whose specialty is the Plain population, and more. “We wanted to make sure we
(reached) everybody in the county, Thompson said. By early June, Thompson was holding online training sessions for the providers to let them know what was expected and to explain the documentation they needed to complete so that MHALC will have the demographic information needed to continue the program. McDevitt explained that the program is designed as an approach to the increase in anxiety, depression, and other fear-related behaviors associated with the shutdown. “We have seen an increase in police calls, and crisis outreach is starting to tick up

on weekdays. “In the morning, this road has constant traffic,” he added, explaining that those traveling between areas west of Lancaster and the greater Ephrata area use the road to avoid the busier highways. “There are work trucks, tractor-trailers … there is all this traffic, and we think that’s a great opportunity to meet people.” The effort has roots in a similar program Willison was involved in when he served as executive pastor of Hempfield Brethren in Christ on Marietta Avenue, where the congregation gave away coffee and doughnuts on the first Friday of each month. “What happened was that we started building relationships with people,” said Willison, who spoke of a couple that stopped often. “She was taking him for cancer treatments, and they would come in ... and ask us to pray for them,” he said, adding that one man who stopped was new to the area and came inside for prayer. “(Those who stopped) asked, ‘Are you trying to get members?’ and we said, ‘No, we just wanted to meet you,’” recalled Willison. “It became a ministry of meeting people at their places of need and being able to talk and share with them. It (was) not about getting members; it (was) about becoming friends.” Now Willison and members of Speedwell Church would like to offer the same to those who traverse the area on Thursday

Speedwell Church draws members from Lebanon, Lititz, Ephrata, Manheim, Stevens, Denver, and beyond. “(Our membership) is pretty far reaching,” said Willison, noting that Brubaker Valley Road is heavily traveled

mornings. “(We hope to see) people who are heading to work and we will say, ‘Anything we could pray for (for you)?’” said Willison. “We aren’t going to say, ‘Come to our church’ or give them any materials,” he added. “We want them to feel comfortable knowing we are here for our community, especially with everything that’s going on now in our nation.” Willison shared that in the year he has been lead pastor at Speedwell, he has witnessed the kindheartedness of the congregation in giving to the Lititz Ministerium food drive and in projects involving making activity bags for children. “This church is a very giving church,” he said. “(Members and friends of the church are) very generous when it comes to helping.” Willison hopes that giving spirit is evident in Free Sweets Thirstdays. “It’s a place for people to come in and get something to start their day off and know that church cares,” he said. “If they’re having a hard time, we want to be available to them for whatever that looks like. If people are struggling with food (insecurity), we can offer them food. We want to reach into our community and say, ‘What are your needs and how can we help you?’” Readers who would like to know more about the church may visit www.speedwellchurch.org.

Chicken Barbecue To Benefit Mount Hope meals will follow CDC guidelines. Mount Hope, located in rural Rapho Township, is a 50-bed skilled nursing facility and rehabilitation center that serves seniors regardless of their ability to pay. Proceeds will go toward Mount Hope’s Coronavirus Assistance Fund to help cover the unanticipated increased cost of safely providing care for residents, including help with purchasing personal protective
equipment, covering unforeseen expenses in additional building and cleaning supplies, easing the financial shortfall from reduced revenue, providing for unexpected costs as staff is needed to fulfill roles once held by volunteers, and acquiring technology to combat residents’ social isolation and provide a positive family connection. The per-meal cost is $12. Preorders will be taken, and meals will be saved
under the name provided when ordered. All payments are to be made when picking up the meals. No handling of money will occur during the food pickup. A drop box will be provided for customers to leave payment in the form of cash or of checks made payable to “Mount Hope NRC.” To preorder, readers may call Kris Wilson at 717-682-8026 or email advancement@mthopenazarene.org by Sunday, Aug. 9.

Shady Maple from pg 1 referred to offering generous amounts for sale, initially of produce, but later of meats, bakery treats, and other food items, and then watching customers take advantage of the plenty as it flew off the shelves. “Everything is bigger and better at Shady Maple,” said Hopkins. Once the Weavers took over the roadside stand, the business began to grow. The Weavers first enclosed the stand with a block building in 1970, expanding to offer groceries that same year. In 1976, the store expanded to 45,000 square feet, and in 1982 it increased to 72,000 square feet. In 2009, it grew to 130,000 square feet - the size it is today. Groceries found in the store now include more than 300 types of tea bags and Shady’s own bulk food items in the freezer department. The dairy department features more than 340 varieties of yogurt, several of which are locally made. The initial stand offered local produce. Today, the produce section features more than 300 items, but fruits and vegetables are still carefully chosen by the owners. For many years, Marvin drove a truck weekly to the Philadelphia produce auction, leaving in the wee hours each Tuesday. Now his son Linford, who oversees the farm market and serves as co-CEO of the company with his brother Phillip, makes the trip. During the summer months, much of the produce sold is grown within 10 miles of the store. In 1974, the in-store bakery was added,
creating the flavored breads (a brainchild of Marvin’s on a sleepless night), creative cakes, whoopie pies in several flavors, and doughnuts with which the name Shady Maple has become synonymous. Today, more than 60 employees work in the bakery area, which often sells more than 7,000 doughnuts in a day. In fact, the store sold more than 3 million doughnuts in 2019. In 2013, Shady got its own mascot when Whoop E. Pie was introduced to the delight of many. By 1976, a meat-cutting area had been added to the store. The meat counter offers personal service that hearkens back to the days of the neighborhood butcher and cuts meats for free. During this summer’s ground beef sale, nearly the equivalent of two 18-wheelers of hamburger was sold. In addition, the self-service area features a section of in-house smoked products; store-made bacon is the best-seller. Visitors to the store will also find a 50-foot deli featuring 10 types of sweet bologna and serving more than 600 customers each Saturday. A separate soup and salad area sells up to 1,500 pounds of macaroni salad each month. Homemade pizzas sold in that area increased in sales during the pandemic from up to 80 per day to between 100 and 150. The Weavers’ sons, Curt, along with Phillip and Linford, grew up spending time in the store. Phil, the oldest, officially went to work there in 1983, followed by Curt in

1985 and Lin in 1989. Phil and Lin became co-presidents in 2015. Marvin acknowledges that timing has made a difference in the growth of Shady. After expanding in 1982, the Weavers saved money for the next remodel, but zoning restrictions held them off until 1992. Although that expansion cost more than originally planned, Marvin saw the bright side. “We were in a recession. That’s the time to go for it. You get the best prices. We saved 10% to 20%.” As the market has grown, the Weavers have continued to express their gratitude for all they have been given. According to Miriam, God has blessed them tremendously. The market now employs more than 380 people, and the Weavers know that each one’s attitude contributes to a positive shopping experience for customers. The Weavers are also grateful for the customers who come from near and far to shop at the store. Several events have been planned to celebrate the anniversary. An outdoor vendor fair will be held on Friday, Aug. 7, and Saturday, Aug. 8, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. From Wednesday, Aug. 12, through Tuesday, Aug. 18, a guessing game giveaway will be held at the store. Visitors to the store can enter to win a grand prize drawing from Wednesday, Aug. 5, to Friday, Aug. 21. Winners will be announced on Saturday, Aug. 22, the same day a sidewalk food fair will be held at the farm market. More information about the market may be found at www.shady-maple.com/ farm-market.

The Junkluggers Opens For Business The Junkluggers of Berks, Chester and Lancaster is now available to serve residential customers and businesses in Berks, Chester and Lancaster counties. Services include junk removal, appliance removal and furniture removal, as well as attic, basement and garage cleanouts. Franchise owner Jakub Mochon has always been concerned about the environment and the community in this area of Pennsylvania, which he calls home. Mochon left his career of 20 years in the medical device industry and launched the Junkluggers of Berks, Chester and Lancaster. The eco-friendly junk removal company is on a mission to make Pennsylvania a little greener and eliminate 100% of reusable waste from landfills by the year 2025. The Junkluggers of Berks, Chester and Lancaster is the second franchise located in Pennsylvania. Mochon decided to bring the business to his local area, as he has been a resident of Chester and Berks counties for the past 18 years. He said he believes the Junkluggers will bring a positive impact to the area as he develops relationships with local non-for-profit organizations that can benefit from gently used items that need a second home. The Junkluggers offers donation receipts and launched the Remix Market, a sister company to some of the Junkluggers franchishes, as a way to keep items out of landfills. The Junkluggers focuses on green, community-oriented practices and striving to enhance lives, the community and the environment by donating, recycling, upcycling and supporting local charities. With the addition of Berks, Chester and Lancaster, the Junkluggers, founded in 2004, now has 30 locations open and operates across a total of 14 states, which are California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia. For more information, readers may contact Mochon at jakub.mochon@junkluggers.com or visit www.junkluggers.com.
