for suicide awareness and prevention,” said Mark. “We posted the winner on our website.” Some past walks have raised more than $17,000 for the foundation to distribute. Mark said he would like to see the 2019 event raise $25,000. “The more we raise, the more I can give toward a funeral, counseling, a utility bill, or whatever (families) need,” Mark said. Raising funds, however, is not the most important factor in the Walk for D.E.S., according to Mark. “We bring together 300 to 400 survivors in a space where it’s expected they will talk with others about what happened to them,” said Mark, who added that many families attend the walk together. “There will be people hugging and crying,” said Mark. “It helps everyone get to tomorrow.” Individuals who wish to participate in the walk may register at the organization’s website. There is a registration fee to take part. The fee for students ages 6 to 18 will be discounted, and children age 5 and under may participate for free.

Mark has distributed the brochures to local coroners, police departments, and funeral homes. Other ways that the organization promotes its message include a poster on a number of Red Rose Transit buses and a 60second video posted in the video gallery under the Media tab at www.walkfordes.org. “The Pennsylvania Suicide Coalition runs a competition among all the schools for the best video spot

In response, the family founded the nonprofit DES Foundation and coordinates the annual Walk for D.E.S., which raises funds to promote suicide prevention and awareness and to aid families who have lost loved ones to suicide. Funds may help pay for counseling in addition to funeral costs. “It depends on the need,” said Mark. This year’s Walk for D.E.S. will include a 5K walk and run with color at Manheim Township Community Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Neffsville, on Saturday, Sept. 14. Registration will open at 9:30 a.m. At 10:45 a.m., a brief service will be held. “We read a poem and play a song or two … at a tree we planted there in the … park,” said Mark. The walk will begin at 11 a.m. along a flat route that travels into a wooded area. “It intertwines like a figure eight. It’s an easy walk,” said Mark, who added that the run with color will occur at the beginning. According to Mark, the first two walks helped provide funding for the Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition, which has created awareness cards that list warning signs of a potential

present the image of a unified and complete person during the first movement. “By the end of the movement, we find there is something wrong even though the person has the appearance of having it all together,” said Nase. In the second movement, the flaws of the subject will become apparent in the chaotic music and the drill. The drill during the ballad will represent self-discovery and control of the individual’s journey, and in the final segment, a sense of peace and confidence will be conveyed. One way the band members will demonstrate the different parts of the drill will be with props that are created in a nesting box fashion. Nase explained that in the first movement the props will be on the field and
constructed in a certain way, but there will appear to only be two of them. In the second movement, the props will multiply to six pieces and be scattered about the field. “By the end of the show, we will rebuild the prop in a different way than it was seen previously,” explained Nase. Nase noted that challenges of the drill include the use of props and the fact that the show is written using a mixture of traditional drill style mixed with newer moves and creating the different stages of the program on the field. “Band members will be asked to do choreography within those stages,” noted Nase, who added that the entire band will dance during the first movement. Drum major Kayla Wolf said that the drill is a departure from past shows. “It’s definitely different,” said Wolf, who is learning some of the dance moves along with the band members. “I really like the music.” A number of band members
will be spotlighted in the drill. Trumpet and baritone solos will be heard, along with a piccolo solo and a quintet formed of brass players. Color guard members will also have solos. The guard will use six-foot flags, swing flags during the ballad, rifles, and sabers. In addition, the color guard uniforms will be made in two parts, with a graycolored top that can be removed to reveal a brightly colored unitard underneath. During the fall 2019 season, the band will take part in several competitions and will host one at CVHS, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Sept. 21. As a participant in the American Division of Cavalcade of Bands, CVHS will join in shows at Hempfield High School, Warwick High School, Marple Newtown High School, Manheim Central High School, and Governor Mifflin High School, along with the championships competition at Hershey.

2018, HCC served more than 15,000 families. Minardi noted that HCC serves more than 60 percent of the people who die in Lancaster County and a quarter of the deceased in York County. HCC also offers services for people who have experienced tragic loss, including the death of pets. To donate items for the auction, readers may contact special events coordinator Devon Fiore at 717-391-2434 or dfiore@hospicecommunity.org. gazebo, and vacation stays for large groups of people. Recommendations of delivery services for the structures will be provided. For folks who would like to contribute to HCC without taking things home, the Day of Care Auction, which is sponsored by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., will be held at noon both days. Television personalities Corinne Lillis and Anne Shannon will host the auctions, during which attendees may virtually purchase days of care for hospice clients. The average daily cost of providing hospice care for one person is $187, Minardi said. The proceeds from the Labor Day Auction will go directly to HCC’s programs. The nonprofit organization has operations in Lancaster and York counties and provides palliative care, bereavement help, chaplain and auxiliary services, individual and group counseling, physical and online resource libraries, and more. As Hospice & Community Care (HCC) donor relations manager Coco Minardi reviewed the items pulled for a photo to advertise the 35th annual Labor Day Auction set for Saturday, Aug. 31, and Monday, Sept. 2, she laughed. “An autographed football, a life-size NASCAR poster, a quilt, and a mailbox: That’s the randomness of the auction right there.” Indeed, at first glance it might seem like the epic two-day sale is full of a jumble of items every year, but it is all very deliberate. The things that have been donated to the auction are grouped by type, such as plants, quilts, sports memorabilia, used cars, and artwork. This year, the event will feature a tool auction for the first time. “ We work with the Amish community, and they do all of our food, which brought in $80,000 last year, but not many Amish people attend the auction,” Minardi explained. In an effort to appeal to more Amish folks, the auction committee asked for advice, and “add tools” was the resounding response. “We called local construction companies, and hospice families have been cleaning out their sheds,” Minardi said. Decommissioned commercialgrade tools and equipment, as well as household tools, have been donated for the auction, and they will be sold to the highest bidders on Aug. 31 from 9 a.m. to noon in the second half of the plant building. “We’re hoping we strike a chord with people who are do-it-yourselfers or Amish,” Minardi remarked. The Labor Day Auction started in Lampeter, but four years ago, the event moved to the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville, where it has flour-
ished. The site offers ample free parking, and there is team parking at the venue as well. Golf carts will be available to shuttle people to and from their cars as needed. Minardi reported that the first auction more than three decades ago raised $1,300, and the advertising material was not even the size of a half-sheet of letter paper. Last year’s event brought in $760,000. “We can’t fit all (of the details) on anything smaller than eight pages,” she marveled. The fairgrounds will open at 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2 so visitors may register for bidder numbers, purchase their allyou-can-eat food passes, and preview the items. The food tents will open on Aug. 31 at 9 a.m. and will feature omelets and sticky buns for breakfast and pork barbecue for lunch. Breakfast logs - those culinary delights of bacon or sausage, scrambled eggs, and cheese baked in a buttery soft pretzel crust - will be available when the food tents open at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 2. Minardi noted that an HCC volunteer is known to bring a cooler to the sale so she can buy two dozen breakfast logs to take home, freeze, and enjoy later. Sept. 2 will also feature barbecued chicken and ribs, as well as doughnuts made on-site. The food offerings on both days will include fried shrimp, a salad bar, fresh fruit, smoothies, chocolate milk, and more. Minardi and the auction committee are still accepting donations for the auction. They are especially looking for used cars and quilts. A number of unique items have already been donated. Of special note are Ty Cobb baseball cards from 1909 and 1911. The collectors’ items will be sold on Sept. 2 at noon in the sports building. An Amish buggy will be up for bids, as well as sheds, a

members, the massive construction project that began this past year at the school brought parking restrictions, relocated classrooms, and the constant din of heavy equipment just outside classrooms and offices. It also provided opportunities for students to learn about real-world math, engineering, and design applications and to study the life cycle of trees. Math students learned how construction workers and surveyors use trigonometry and algebra in the field. Agricultural mechanics students learned about the inner workings of a temporary ag shop as it was being built, and plant science students got to examine the rings of a tree cut down as part of the project. Warfel Construction also established an internship that enabled one student to attend weekly construction meetings and visit onsite work, and groups of students were able to tour the construction site and learn about the excavating, plumbing, drywall, technology, and other trades represented by the workers they observed. “When there’s a construction site in your back yard, you take advantage of the valuable career exploration for your students, said Michelle Wagner, support and transition teacher at the school. “This fits into our goal of transition and preparing students for life after high school. teacher Gary Luft’s classes in April and May to talk about their roles in the project. “The students were given an overview and the phasing of the total construction project, as well as an explanation of what was currently being done on site, Luft said. “It was very beneficial for the students to hear from the experts in the field. Meagan Slates’ plant science class got to examine the remains of a giant tree cut down during construction as part of a “Tree of Life lab. Students counted the tree stump’s growth rings to estimate the age of the tree - more than 50 years - and then compared it to the tree they were studying in the lab. “This was a great experience, and I’m so thankful that Warfel and the Penn Manor administration were so open to sharing these experiences with our students, Slates said. The interactions were designed to help demystify the construction field, said Warfel project engineer Kevin McGuire. “We want to involve the students and then turn that into a discussion about what they plan to do in the future. What’s going on outside the window, and how could that involve you? he said. “We need more conversations like that in the education field. McGuire said he hopes to continue the collaboration as the construction project progresses over the next two years.

Fresh Air Fund from pg 1 “ We have plenty of outdoor activities planned,” added Keith. A picnic and at least one fishing trip were scheduled, along with the camping. The three children said they love fishing. Waiting just a short distance away, Tanya Beakes, also of Denver, and her two daughters were anxious to welcome their first Fresh Air child. Hannah Beakes, who is 11, had been communicating with Yvonne Zhuang for some time. “I am looking forward to meeting her in person and getting to know her better,” said Hannah. Tanya noted that the girls already know they have a lot in common, adding that one of their first conversations involved the details of making slime. “ We both don’t like roller coasters,” noted Hannah. Tanya said that the family planned to swim, visit a local amusement park, and attend a show at a local Christian theater. “We’ll be showing her all the stuff there is to do around Lancaster County,” said Tanya. The Beakes family became interested in hosting a Fresh Air child after talking to fellow church members who recommended the experience. They met with one of the coordinators and decided to sign up. “ We thought it sounded like fun,” shared Tanya. The Fresh Air Fund is a notfor-profit agency that connects thousands of children from low-income families in New York City with host families in rural, suburban, and smalltown communities along the East Coast and southern Canada. Youths ages 7 to 18 stay free of charge for one or two weeks of fun and relaxation with a host family. Bus dropoffs occur several times throughout the summer in various locations. For 2019, nearly 100 children left New York City to stay with families in Lancaster County. On July 1, 26 children met their host families at the Junction Center in Manheim in addition to the Leola pickup location. Area readers who would like to host a child next summer may contact Lancaster County Fresh Air Fund representative Marcia Weaver at 717-951-8851 or fill out a form at www.freshair.org to get started. Pennsylvania clearances and other background checks may be completed through the agency. Volunteer host families may request the preferred age and gender of their Fresh Air child. Children on first-time visits are ages 7 to 12, and children reinvited by the same family may continue through age 18. According to www.freshair.org, more than 1.8 million children from New York City have participated in the cultural exchange program since it began in 1877.

Freedom Thrift from pg 1 Second-Hand Store Will Support Local Ministry By Ann Mead Ash
“We are an independent nonprofit 501(c)(3) in support of Revelations of Freedom Ministries (ROFM),” said Dan Fox, manager of Freedom Thrift Second Hand Store, which will hold its grand opening at 114 Ranck Church Road, New Holland, on Friday, Aug. 30, and Saturday, Aug. 31, in conjunction with the annual Blue Ball Days celebration. Freedom Thrift will carry a variety of gently used items. The store will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Donations will be accepted at the back of the building at the garage door whenever the store is open. Shoppers and donors are encouraged to use the Ranck Church Road entrance to reach the building. The store will accept credit cards as well as cash. Items that will be sold in the store and accepted as donations will include clothing for men, women, and children. Shoes and accessories, such as jewelry and purses, will be sold as well. The store also plans to carry luggage. According to Deb Buckwalter, who shares store manager duties with Yvette Lee, health and beauty items, such as new makeup and hair brushes, will be sold, along with personal care items and medical equipment such as shower chairs and walkers.
A housewares section will feature linens, lighting fixtures and lamps, and home décor, including artificial plants, flowers, and other decorative items. Gardening supplies and outdoor décor will also be sold. Small appliances, such as radios, clocks, microwaves, and coffee makers will also be sold. Toys will be sold, along with books. The store will feature sporting goods, such as tennis rackets, and musical instruments, such as guitars. Craft and seasonal items such as Christmas décor will have a place in the store, as will cards, office supplies, hardware, and pet supplies. There are a number of items that Freedom Thrift cannot accept as donations. Among these are televisions, computer monitors, car seats, cribs, video cassette tapes, mattresses, and air conditioners. Freedom Thrift is seeking area residents with extra time they could use to give back to the community. “We really need volunteers, and we can use all their gifts,” noted Buckwalter, who said the store will need sorters, pricers, and greeters, as well as cashiers. “We will (work to) find a place for you (to volunteer),” added Fox. Fox said that the organizers of Freedom Thrift, which began accepting donations in July, are thankful to the Ephrata, New Holland, and Morgantown ReUzit Stores. “I appreciate their assistance in getting started,” he
noted. “We all are doing the Lord’s work,” added Fox, who worked at the Ephrata Re-Uzit before coming to work at Freedom. He has been associated with area thrift stores for nearly a decade. “I would love to see people come to the area and visit all the local (thrift stores),” he said. ROFM is a faith-based, Christcentered discipleship program for men who struggle with addictions. Currently, ROFM houses 15 men in buildings located along Route 23 in Blue Ball; however, in the future, the center will move to the upper floors of the thrift store. The upstairs area, which is in the process of being remodeled for the ministry, will be able to accommodate as many as 50 men. Readers who would like more information about Freedom Thrift may visit www.rofm.org and click on the “What We Do” tab. Individuals who have questions about donations may email info@freedomthrift.org or call 717-356-0831. Pictured on front: Store manager Deb Buckwalter (left) and general manager Dan Fox (right) are preparing for the Aug. 30 and 31 grand opening of Freedom Thrift Second Hand Store, which will be located off Ranck Church Road in New Holland. The store, which will support Revelations of Freedom Ministries, will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays.

The shoe drive yielded a total of 2,327 pairs of new and gently used shoes collected throughout central Pennsylvania. Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage offices throughout central Pennsylvania recently collected a total of 2,327 pairs of new and gently used shoes for Soles4Souls. Soles4Souls is a nonprofit social enterprise that aims to create sustainable jobs and provide relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing around the world. This was Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage’s first shoe collection for the nonprofit. The offices with the largest collections include Harrisburg, 498 pairs; York, 285 pairs; Lancaster, 270 pairs; Kutztown and Wyomissing, 240 pairs; and Carlisle, 236 pairs. The
offices in Camp Hill, Chambersburg, Dillsburg, Greencastle, Hershey, Lebanon, New Bloomfield and Waynesboro also contributed to the success of the shoe collection. Shoes donated to the Soles4Souls microenterprise program offer the opportunity for people all over the world to create small businesses selling shoes and clothing. This is a sustainable way for those without a traditional job or training to lift themselves and their families out of poverty.
