Several years ago, Navy veteran Bill Terry wore his Navy cap to a rally in Gettysburg. Someone took note of his service and asked if he went to the monthly veterans breakfast in Gettysburg. “I had never heard of it or been there,” saidNotTerry.long after that conversation, Terry made the hour-and-45-minute trip to Gettysburg to attend a breakfast. “(The veterans) had been meeting 12 to 15 years,” reported Terry. “I thought, ‘We don’t have anything like this in Lancaster.’”

When Paul Murr, Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) marching band director, and his staff choose a fall show, they know the program will have a certain type of theme. “We always choose something religious because that’s what the school is and the message (should be),” said Murr. This year’s show, “The Promise of Living,” will focus on the early days of the Old Testament, touching on the story of Noah and the covenant. The first song, “The Promise of Living” by Aaron Copland, opens with a mellophone solo by River Olmsted, while the spotlight is on Emma Townshend performing a color guard solo with a 6-foot flag. The song builds into “Dies Irae” by Giuseppe Verdi. “(The title) means ‘death march,’” said Lydia Fuhrman, band vice president, who added, “It’s a contrast to the first piece.” The third song is “Rainbow Connection,” written by Paul Williams and Kenneth Ascher and made famous by Kermit the Frog. According to band president Annabelle Kiefer, while the second movement represents the storm and Noah’s ark, the third pays homage to God’s promise as symbolized by the rainbow representing hope for the future. Nicolletta Kiefer performs a color guard solo in “Rainbow Connection,” accompanied by a tenor sax solo. The song will also features an alto saxophone solo by Sam Parrish. The show concludes with “Appalachian Morning” by Paul Halley. Alix Maumus is the featured twirler. During camp, which was held from Aug. 8 through 12 at the school, more than 40 band members, including color guards, braved the warm temperatures while working to learn the music and the drill. One particular challenge was the unusual and uneven steps on the final song. To keep morale up, theme days were held. Monday was class color day, and Tuesday was beach day, when the students dressed in Hawaiian shirts and other beach attire. Wednesday was crazy hat and sock day. One student actually wore a banana costume for part of the day. Thursday was NASA day, and Friday was section theme day, where each section was encouraged to choose a theme and dress accordingly. In addition, students took time out to play kickball and have fun with water balloons.
Terry decided to start a group locally, so he drove from Gettysburg to the Lyndon Diner in Lancaster. “I told (representatives of the Lyndon Diner) what I wanted to do, and they offered the back room,” said Terry, who noted that at first attendees ordered off the menu. “For the first meeting, 23 showed up,” said Terry, who added that three of those still attend.

Participants in the memorial will scale the steps of the stadium as they wind around its interior five times, the equivalent of the 110 stories of the twin towers. Each participant traditionally carries an image of a first responder who was killed on the day of the attack as he or she endures the long climb. “Everyone carries a picture of someone who didn’t make it,” said Scott Yuill, a member of the East Petersburg Fire Company for almost 50 years. “You’re symbolically finishing the climb that they weren’t able to.”
The annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The event will have a set registration fee, with registration available online in advance or at the stadium on the day of the event, beginning at 8 a.m. The stair climb will begin at 9 a.m. and will include EMS personnel, firefighters and other first responders, but members of the public are also invited to participate.
Yuill has assisted with the event for 12 years and first became involved as a way to honor a friend and fellow firefighter who was killed during the collapse of the World Trade Center. The proceeds from the event will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, with funds directly supporting counseling services for the New York fire Department. Counseling is still offered for those who lost loved ones on 9/11. Those who wish to contribute to the foundation may donate at the event or online.

The Pathways Center’s event will be held on Aug. 31 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and it is open to anyone regardless of whether their loved one was served by Hospice & Community Care. The event will feature keynote speaker Dr. Bonnie Milas,

According to Terry, most of the attendees are Vietnam War veterans. “We had three or four World War II vets who have passed away,” he noted, adding that some Korean War veterans have attended and that he is starting to see veterans from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. “We had reservations for 72,” he said at the July 16 meeting. “But we get from 90 to 120, so we set up for 90 today.” “We always have the POW table set up and nobody sits there,” said Terry of the traditional table set with a white tablecloth, a single candle, an inverted glass, and a single red rose in a vase. Currently, Terry said, two benefactors are covering breakfast for the veterans, but he noted that sponsorships are welcome.

Boltz began coaching at Annville Elementary School in the spring of 2017. She was soon working to start a team at Lebanon Catholic - a kindergarten through 12th-grade private school that she had attended. Her success inspired her to start a Heart and Sole program at Lebanon Catholic for middle-schoolers in the spring of 2018. When a team could not be raised, Boltz coached at Lebanon Middle School, where she connected with Laurie Funk, now a board member with GOTR Lancaster and Lebanon. In the fall of 2018, Boltz returned to GOTR at Lebanon Catholic, where she continued to coach until the spring of 2019, when she decided to transport girls who were interested in taking part in Heart and Sole to the Lebanon YMCA. “That’s when Laurie and I realized the power of connecting girls from different schools,” said Boltz. In the spring of 2020, a community team was born. Then, the COVID-19 shutdown occurred. Coaches reached out with activity packages to girls who had signed up from all over Lebanon County. Boltz noted that the YMCA has supported the program, but a lack of coaches has caused the GOTR program to struggle recently. Boltz was nominated by fellow coaches who mentioned her positive attitude and vision as well as her ability to connect with each girl and celebrate her individual achievements. When 2021 Shining Light winner Cara Scudner announced Boltz as the award winner at the May 25 banquet, she said, “(Boltz’s) infectious enthusiasm, strength, and leadership skills brought girls from different schools together into one team with a strong bond.” Each Shining Light Award winner receives a bracelet and $500 to donate. Boltz chose to give to the Tour de Lebanon Valley bike ride, which raises funds for the Community Health Council of Lebanon County; the Lebanon Valley Conservancy; the Lebanon Valley Bicycle Coalition; the Lebanon Valley Mountain Bike Team, which is an interscholastic cycling team for young students; and the Lebanon Bicycle Recycle, which provides bikes for children in Lebanon. The GOTR fall season will be held from Monday, Sept. 12, through Monday, Nov. 21, with the GOTR 5K presented by OAL scheduled to be held at Millersville University on Saturday, Nov. 19. The 5K, which is open to the public, will begin at 8:30 a.m. GOTR is especially in need of volunteer coaches to help make the season possible for girls at each participating school. The yearly stair climb is sponsored by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation was created by Congress in 1992 to drive a nationwide effort to honor those killed in the line of duty. The foundation has since conceptualized multiple programs to accomplish its mission and sponsors memorial stair climbs similar to Lancaster’s across the country. A grant from the Department of Justice contributes to programs specifically made for families of fallen firefighters, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology partners with the foundation to research methods that may prevent death and injuries among firefighters in the line of duty. “The stair climb gives people a chance to remember and to learn,” said Yuill. “The attack happened over 20 years ago now. There are several participants that weren’t even born yet. This gives them the chance to learn and a chance for those who do remember to honor the sacrifices made that day.” The stair climb draws firefighters from multiple states to complete the symbolic journey, fully dressed in their uniforms and equipment. Last year’s climb also featured an appearance by the Philadelphia Eagles’ cheerleading squad.
