CVHS Marchers Prepare Fall Drill By Ann Mead Ash

In 2019, the Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) marching band mastered the drill and music for a show called “The Architect,” a four-movement program

that compared the work of a designer to the questions people encounter and the outside influences that come into play in shaping their own lives. The band took that show to several competitions, including taking part in the American

Division of Cavalcade of Bands. This year, preparing a fall show has been a lot less structured for director Brandon Nase and the 50-member band. “It has been quite a journey to this point,” said Nase, who was finally able

to hold band camp at the school from Aug. 10 through 14 from 6 to 9 p.m. each evening. “We started with a show back in February,” recalled Nase. “We switched (to another) in June, and we switched (again) a couple weeks ago.” See CVHS Marchers pg 4

Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, is keenly aware of the worldwide impact of COVID-19. HOPE International is a nonprofit organization that seeks to alleviate poverty in all its forms - spiritual, material, social, and personal. Over its more than 20-year history, the organization, with offices at 227 Granite Run Drive, Suite 250, Lancaster, has done that by loaning out more than $1 billion and helping to start savings groups among about a million clients in 16 countries. Now, those clients, who

HOPE clients were prepared to face the financial hardships of the pandemic. “Pre-COVID, there was a study done by an independent third-party organization in Malawi, where we work, said Rutt, who noted that the study focused on how many families in that country would have the funds they needed to survive three weeks in an emergency. That amount was around $19. “(The study found that) 37% of the population in general had the ability to survive, said Rutt. However, when the researchers surveyed HOPE savings group members, they found that 81% had the means to survive. “It shows the difference that our savings groups are making, said Rutt.

Brian Boycan, regional representative with HOPE, reported that the shutdowns around the world have resulted in crises we may not be able to imagine. “In South Asia, they announced at 8 p.m. that they would shut down at midnight,â€? he noted. “In four hours, more than 40 million migrant workers became refugees in their own country. Most lived between 300 and 1,600 miles away from where they were located at the time of the shutdown.â€? The good news is that many

Rutt said are already on “fragile footing, have been teetering on the brink. “We have been trying to pull them off that proverbial cliff edge, said Rutt. “We have gotten some results. HOPE has instituted a three-phase plan called Rebuilding Dreams, which first provided food and water to clients who needed it to survive. The second phase involved a 60-day interest payment holiday. That crucial step cost HOPE about $500,000 a month, for a total expenditure of $1 million. The final phase, which focuses on recapitalization of the tiny client businesses, will include at least

Golfers are asked to register by Friday, Sept. 11. Rutt has been impressed by the resilience of some of HOPE’s clients. “Irene in Paraguay got a small loan to start a hair salon, he said, noting that countries like Paraguay do not offer stimulus packages. According to Rutt, Irene quickly reorganized to sewing face masks and selling them to the families in her community. “Irene provided a product (her neighbors) need and an income for her family, said Rutt. “I thought that was a good example of pivoting to

The Queen medley will be followed by “In the Stone” by Earth, Wind & Fire. “The third tune will be either “‘Enter Sandman’ (by Metallica) or ‘All Star’ by Smash Mouth,” said Nase. Nase noted that band camp was focused on teaching and retaining marching skills. “The drill will be minimal this

year,” remarked Nase. “The main idea is to make sure we maintain protocol, (while) hoping this time next year we will be back to normal.” He said that some band members and sections will be featured in the show, but which ones was still being decided during camp. “A lot of that is a work in progress,” he explained. In addition to learning a field drill while playing music or performing with a flag or rifle, band camps for 2020 have included the added challenges of adhering to COVID-19 protocols. “Masks are mandatory,” commented Nase. “The color guard and percussion all wear them throughout the evening, and wind players move them down to play.” Nase added that special attention has been paid to social distancing. “We keep everyone at a minimum of six feet apart, but we shoot for more,” he said, noting that when students arrive at camp, instead of going into the building, they each remain in an assigned parking space and talk to each other from their spaces. Another area of focus involves instruments or flags. “With percussion and guard, chain of custody is really important,” said Nase. “Kids have been given equipment sticks, mallets, flags, and they are theirs. They stay with that person. Instruments stay with that person.” Organizers have also added time to rehearsals to allow for social distancing. “Normally we would (rehearse) 6 to 6:30 p.m. doing one thing, and at 6:32 we would start the next thing,” said Nase. “We are building in time to get from place to place to play it safe (and) for flexibility.” According to Nase, the students returned with the right attitude to accomplish the work that needed to be done within limitations. “The kids have done an excellent job following all the protocols,” he said. “That was something I talked about the first night … I told them what a great job they did, and I reminded them that … they have to fight that instinct to let down their guard just because we have done it successfully.” Kayla Wolf, serving as drum major for the second year in a row, observed that after the long break, the students are happy to be together again. “It’s different from years past, (but) just being together finally, even though we are six feet apart (is fun),” she said. “Seeing my friends and still being goofy and still doing the things we are used to doing in band but differently (allows us to) still joke (and) still have fun.” Cavalcade of Bands canceled live events in early August. Nase noted the organization plans to offer clinics and will accept videos of bands so judges may give comments and feedback. He intends to consider those options later in the fall. For now, he hopes the band will be able to perform at home football games. He also hopes to see area bands meet up in a safe manner during weeks when the team is away, since bands will not travel to away games this year. “Directors have discussed that if two schools have away games on a Friday, possibly getting together (at one of the schools) to perform for each other,” he said “It will be as close to performing (before a crowd) as possible.” Nase noted, however, that the option may or may not be open to bands. “There’s so much that’s up in the air right now,” he conceded. More information about the school may be found at www.conestoga valley.org/cvhs.

gorgeous city,â€? said Drew, who described the area as touristy filled with high-rise hotels and apartments. “They were known for their food, like a little Paris,â€? he said. In the afternoon on Aug. 4, two explosions rocked the port area of the city. Nearly 200 people died, and more than 6,000 were injured. As much as $15 billion in property damage left 300,000 homeless. When the explosion happened, Drew was on the phone with Charbel, a ministry partner he had met when he was in Beirut in March. “(Charbel) was scared for his family,â€? recalled Drew, who said that once Charbel found his family and knew they were safe, he turned to another mission. “He decided to go to where the explosion happened to help people,â€? said Drew. “That is where he has been daily.â€? According to Drew, Charbel has formed a team that takes shovels and brooms daily and asks where they can help clean up the disaster area. “They go from home to home or from apartment to apartment cleaning and ministering,â€? said Drew. “What I find fascinating is that no longer are people (in Beirut) asking, ‘Are you a Muslim or a Christian or a Jew?’ They are just asking, ‘How can we help?’â€? Keeping in touch with Charbel by phone each day, Drew is seeing how the team is reaching out. “From tragedy, there is an open door for Christians to go and love people because they are in desperate need of help right now,â€? he said. “I am incredibly thankful that we have people there working and that there’s opportunity to make a difference in the Middle East.â€? When Drew and Cindy formed We Help Children 10 years ago, the family moved to Guatemala to help children to overcome trauma and train workers in orphanages to do the same. In the last several years, the ministry has expanded to add partners in Chicago, Honduras, Belize, and more locations. “The Lord ‌ says go to all nations and make disciples,â€? said Drew. “The work became less dependent on Drew and Cindy to do the healing work with the children (and) more about us training others.â€? “ We were helping train nationals to be excellent at working with children,â€? said Drew, who was in Beirut from March 1 through 7 at the invitation of the Lebanon Bible Society for an intense training session with children’s trauma workers from

On his flight back to Guatemala, which took him by way of England and Texas, Drew became concerned that countries were shutting down. “Even within a country, travel shut down,â€? he recalled, noting that his family’s missionary lifestyle required a lot of traveling. “We suddenly had a major change,â€? said Drew. “The Lord was revealing a new thing. We were moving to a new model of training.â€? Since March, the Metcalf family has returned to Lancaster County. Drew and Cindy have written a training manual curriculum, and they are now providing online video training sessions of up to 90 minutes once or twice a week. “It takes about a month and a half to finish the training,â€? said Drew. “If there’s a close fit, we invite the people we train to be on our team.â€?
