Fairmount Schedules Online Auction And Drive-Through Barbecue Annual Fundraiser Changes Locations By Ann Mead Ash
Dorothy Witmer, one of the principal organizers of the annual Fairmount Benefit Auction and Chicken Barbecue, is saddened that Fairmount residents will not be enjoying this year’s event as they have in the past. “One of the special struggles is that this has always been a day of celebration for the residents,” said Witmer. “It started out being a special day for them and for families to be with them, and now it is going on without them.”
Starting September 2, this paper will be in your mailbox every other week.
A John Deere pedal car (top photo) and an assortment of quilts (bottom photo) will all go up for bids when Fairmount holds its Online Auction and Drive-Through Barbecue.

sitting in church when he had a vision of bringing closeout liquidated overstock merchandise and thrift store items together with groceries, fresh produce, dairy, frozen foods, and fresh meat. Mitchell thought, “If God brings me the right team to put this together, I can do this.” That team, which has brought just such a market to a food desert, with a population of 33,000 within a mile of the location, in Lancaster, includes vice president of development Pam Pautz, who See Treasures Markets pg 4

The team that has made Treasures Markets a reality includes (from left) vice president of store operations Ken Groff, vice president of development Pam Pautz, and vice president of purchasing Mike Willig. The first store, which offers discounted groceries, clothing, and housewares, opened on North Franklin Street in Lancaster at the end of June.
For the safety of Fairmount residents and attendees at the annual event, organizers have moved the 31st annual auction online and made the chicken barbecue a drive-through event at two area locations. Online pre-bidding for the auction will open Friday, Sept. 4. Bidding will start to close on Friday, Sept. 11, at 6 p.m., with all items scheduled to close by 8 p.m. “We will take absentee bids,” said Peter Passage, stewardship director at Fairmount. Witmer explained that those who would like to take part in absentee bidding may do so by calling 717-354-1800. “(When they) leave their maximum bid and contact information, we will bid for them,” said Witmer, who said the option will be available until the auction ends.
It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. At Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), we are committed to making adjustments within the current circumstances to try to continue to regularly provide you with the community news you expect to read in this paper.

Friendship Community To Hold 5K Run/Walk Friendship Community will hold a fundraising 5K with options for a virtual race as well as an in-person race on Sept. 26. By Ann Mead Ash
As a runner, Becky Link, development associate with Friendship Community, knows how 5Ks have been affected by COVID-19 restrictions. While many organized runs have been converted to virtual events, many participants, Link included, miss running in person. So, when Link had the chance to offer
input for the annual Friendship Community 5K Run/Walk, she liked the idea of offering options. “We decided to focus on the 5K and have it be both virtual and in-person,” said Link. “Anyone who wants to support us but is feeling hesitant about being in groups of people, we understand and appreciate that.” For those runners, the 5K offers a virtual participation opportunity, which includes the same goodie bag, but can See Friendship 5K pg 6

Local author Hillary Daecher and illustrator Angie Hohenadel have teamed up for the first time to create a children’s book titled “SOAR.” Daecher, who lives in Lititz, has been writing short stories since she was a child. “SOAR” is her first published children’s book. To learn more, readers may visit www.hillarydaecher.com. Hohenadel is a high school art teacher and artist in Lancaster. “SOAR” is her first illustrated children’s book. “SOAR,” published by Schiffer Publishing Ltd., tells the story of Ramone, a shy, ruby-throated hummingbird, who is about to leave the nest for the first time. However, his anxiety and fear keep him from taking off as he contemplates all that could go wrong. Full of kind words and encouragement, Ramone’s mother gives him room to work through his emotions, building his confidence and letting him set his own pace. Ramone watches as his friends soar through the sky, realizing all he might miss out on if he does not conquer his fear. Ramone’s adventure showcases the emotions, both positive and negative, that children experience as they approach new challenges. Accompanied by illustrations, the tale guides readers through Ramone’s emotional journey, showing children that fear must be overcome in order to grow. The book addresses the topic of going back to school, which can bring about feelings of uncertainty in children of all ages. Whether the first day of school starts as traditional in-classroom learning or in the new virtual classroom, it is natural for

furniture, a bright yellow John Deere pedal car with green trim, and a little metal chair will also go up for bids. “We will likely have a utility trailer, a bicycle, and a generator,” said Passage, who added that a variety of gift certificates, including $500 off orthodontic work, will also be auctioned. One specialty item that will be offered is an 11-by-11-inch log cabin wall hanging made with 468 pieces. According to Passage, the intricate piece was created by a granddaughter of a Fairmount resident. Other handmade items will include a pair of Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls with extra clothes. One resident built a freestanding coat tree to donate. The auction will include a selection of beef. “We are selling beef eighths of a cow,” said Passage. “We will have eight eighths
up for bids, so that’s a whole cow.” To see photos of auction items and bid online, readers may visit https://fairmounthomes.org/ and click on “Benefit Auction & BBQ.” The link to the photos should be posted by Sept. 4; however, new items may be added after that date. The drive-through chicken barbecue, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12, will be held at New Covenant Mennonite Fellowship and at E.K. Martin & Sons, 25 Wissler Road, Lititz (just off Route 322 West between Ephrata and Clay). Chicken sales at both locations will be held from 10 a.m. until the chicken is sold out. The chicken barbecue meal will include a leg and thigh, a roll, cheesy potatoes, applesauce, a whoopie pie, and a beverage. An option to purchase two
additional leg and thigh pieces will be offered. All funds raised by the event will benefit the Sharing Fund, which provides $2.5 million in uncompensated care for residents annually. Passage noted that 2020 has been a difficult year for Fairmount. “It has been a struggle for our staff to care for our residents, emotionally and spiritually,” he said. “Our residents have been gracious, strong, and supportive,” he said. “We moved to New Covenant to keep as many people as safe as possible, not only our residents, but also the community.” Passage said he hopes area residents will support the event. “We can only do what we can do because we are hand in hand with the community,” he said. “If people feel led to bid or come to the preview, we welcome that.”

has worked with area nonprofits; vice president of purchasing Mike Willig; and Ken Groff, vice president of store operations. Willig and Groff are both former Amelia’s employees with many years of experience. On June 30, that vision became a reality when Treasures Markets opened its flagship store located at 515 N. Franklin St., Lancaster, between the McDonald’s and McCaskey High School. The 30,000-square-foot building features a variety of groceries, including brand-name and locally produced food items, at discount prices on one side and merchandise ranging from jewelry and clothing to furniture and large appliances on the other. Willig pointed to the variety of food items neatly organized to the right of the store. “We wanted to give the local community access to the type of (grocery store) they don’t have access to in Lancaster City,” he said. Pautz noted that closeout items, including new clothing and shoes, priced at less than a third of the original retail. Outside, 40 free parking spaces are available. The store is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays. Pautz explained that the mission of Treasures Markets has several facets: first, to supply affordable food in a food desert; second, to make other items avail-
able in the store at reasonable prices and to keep those items out of the waste stream; and third, to offer jobs. “We are working with Water Street Mission’s (WSM) Step Up program,” said Pautz, adding that they received a grant to do job training. “We are working in that program to bring some folks over once they complete the program at Water Street.” Groff added that the organization is already working with a few men to do job training. But job training is not the only way the organization has partnered with WSM. “This is a social enterprise,” said Pautz. “We created Treasures Markets as a benefit to Treasures of Hope Foundations, which is a 501(c)(3) with the sole intent to give the profits of this store back to the community it serves. This store is just a vehicle to fund the nonprofit.” WSM is one of the foundation’s main partners, and WSM will receive a large portion of the proceeds. However, Pautz explained that the goal is then to give funds to other nonprofits in Lancaster city that battle homelessness and food insecurity and help provide employment opportunities. “Eventually, there will be a grant process where local nonprofits will be able to apply for money,” she said. Treasures Markets could use volunteers at both the store and
the organization’s warehouse at 1140 Enterprise Road, East Petersburg. “We need lots of volunteers at the warehouse and here for greeters, to sort donations, tagging, and dressing room attendants,” said Pautz, who directed those who are looking to volunteer to the organization’s website at www.treasuresmarkets.com. She noted that volunteer information includes a description of each job along with a chance to sign up online for the days they are available to help. Donations are also accepted at the warehouse. “ We need donations of clothing, household goods, small appliances, and furniture,” said Pautz, who added that no appointment is necessary to make a donation. Donation hours may be found at the website. On one wall of the market are logos of organizations that have sponsored the market, including High Foundation, Fulton Bank, Ephrata National Bank, and Community Fellowship Church. The foundation launched a capital campaign in August to try to lower expenses at the store so that money can be invested into the community more quickly. “There’s room for more names on the wall,” said Pautz, who noted that those interested in donating may email ppautz@treasuresmarkets.com.

overall finishers were Merlin Lantz of Leola with a time of 18:58 and Ann King of Lititz with a time of 23:16. COVID-19 precautions will include limiting the race to 225 entrants. Masks are encouraged during non-running portions of the event, but are not required during the run. Social distancing will be encouraged. Link explained that the water stations will be self-serve, offering small bottles of water for runners to pick up as they pass. Friendship Community is a faith-based, licensed provider of disability services and has been cultivating the capabilities of intellectually disabled and autistic individuals since 1972. The organization currently serves more than 200 people in various programs, including 27 residential homes, three daytime programs, and those living with their loved ones or independently in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. “We are really trying to think outside the box, as we have had to do for all COVID fundraising,” said Link, who noted that crowd support fundraising will be available this year. “As people register, they can create a fundraising page, so they can find sponsors for their first mile and second mile.” Registrants who want to raise additional funds may do so at http://bit.ly/FC-5K-Fund raise2020. The cost for the event will be discounted and a free tech shirt will be guaranteed until the close of early registration on Sept. 4. A smaller discount will continue to apply until Friday, Sept. 25. Tech shirts will be distributed while supplies last. Online registration, available at www.Friendship Community.net/5K, will close at midnight Wednesday, Sept. 23. There will be no discount for those who register on the day of the race. Readers who have questions may call 717-656-2466 or email development@ friendshipcommunity.net.

be done at home at the runner’s leisure. For runners who want to join others in a 5K, the event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 8 a.m. at Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, with check-in and registration prior to the race beginning at 7 a.m. The run/walk race will start at 8 a.m., and awards will be presented at approximately 9 a.m. “(We’re hoping) it won’t be humid in the morning, and it will be great (September) weather,” noted Link. The run will be a professionally timed race on a safe off-road course, which loops through Landis Homes and finishes back at the starting line. Approximately a quarter mile of the course is on grass, a mile is packed fine gravel, and the rest is paved. Link hopes the event will appeal to those who have missed running in traditional 5Ks. “We are trying to expand our horizons by connecting with folks who haven’t heard of us before to do some sort of in-person run because theirs was canceled,” she said. “It will look a little different, but we want to offer that race experience.” Organizers will station people on the course to provide cheers and encouragement to create the exciting race opportunity many runners have been missing. “Part of the fun of running is starting at the line … hearing the gun go off … we want to pay respect to those people who haven’t had any (live) race opportunities,” said Link, who added that because the event is a run/walk, those wishing to take things more slowly are welcome too. “Come and have fun and walk three miles,” she said. “We’re excited for this.” “We have monetary prizes for the winners of the in-person race,” reported Link. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female runners, and medals will be awarded to the top three runners in eight age groups. The 2019 race first-place

Veritas Works To Keep School Safe “Equipping Faith Leaders Training Posted School officials have recently been focusing on how and if schools could reopen safely in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. While the leadership at Veritas Academy, a classical Christian school in Leola, recognizes the importance of safety measures to protect the health of students and staff, the school sees another challenge to meet: keeping education joyful through it all. “From the beginning of this summer, we’ve been saying that our plan is to reopen school in the fall safely and as close to normal as possible, said Ty Fischer, Veritas Academy head of school. “One benefit we have to our advantage is the fact that we have spacious classrooms and relatively small class sizes, which allow us flexibility in making our classooms work for social distancing, said Kylee Bowman, director of communications. “Coupled with creative use of outdoor and common spaces, Veritas is positioned to serve our families well by
keeping students safe. Due to a courtyard and a large yard behind the school, Veritas has ample outdoor space that it intends to put to full use this year. “Teachers taking students outside for class - whether for reading time, general instruction, or for interactive activities - has always been a regular occurrence around here, Bowman noted. “This year, we have taken steps to make this more comfortable and accessible. Large tents and tables set up in the courtyard will be used for outdoor class time, giving students ample time and space to spread out and learn in a different environment, especially since students will stay in the same classroom for most of the day in order to cut down on student traffic and potential exposure. The tents will allow for outdoor class time to happen even during hot and rainy days, and will remain in use as long as weather permits. Also, weather permitting, lunch will be a picnic
for students. Students are able to bring lunches outside, and the cafeteria will not be used as long as COVID-19 restrictions are in place. One sacrifice most classrooms had to make in order to allow for socially-distanced desk placement was the temporary removal of their reading nooks. The cafeteria will be transformed into a socially-distanced reading nook. Bean bags, rugs, cushions and more will be set up for classes to enjoy reading and book discussions together, with adequate sanitization between classes. With so much focus being placed on student and staff physical health, Veritas recognizes the importance of nurturing emotional, mental, and spiritual health as well. Whether making plexiglass dividers into additional, erasable workspaces or having classes outside under a tent or shade tree, the staff at Veritas is seeking to find new ways to show God’s love and truth to students while maintaining academic excellence.
Equipping Faith Leaders will be offered on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The training will be held at Alpha and Omega Church, 708 Wabank Road, Lancaster. The goal of the workshop is to equip religious leaders, both clergy and laity, with information to take the next steps in developing an addiction prevention and recovery support team ministry that is congregational and is run by lay leaders. At the end of the workshop, participants will understand the role
of the congregation in addressing opiate and other substance use disorders; be able to identify barriers and demonstrate specific steps to initiate an effective team ministry; recognize the roles and expectations of congregational leadership, both clergy and laity; and be able to explain the work of a prevention and recovery support ministry team. The in-person training will follow social distancing protocols, including the wearing of masks. Individuals who arrive
without a mask will be provided one. Hand sanitizer will also be provided. There is a limit of 25 participants. Lunch will be provided. To register, readers may visit https://goalproject.org/event/ f-a-i-t-h-initiatives-equipping -faith-leaders-3/. The registration deadline is Wednesday, Sept. 16. For more details, readers may contact the GOAL office at 717-824-3310 or mail@goal project.org or contact Celso Mesias at leadershipcenter info@gmail.com or 717-342-8649.

Lisa Frankford, owner of New Creations Studio, 9 E. Main St., Strasburg, recalls giving her first haircut to a friend during a sleepover while they were in ninth grade. It was not her best work. However, Lisa’s grandmother was a beautician and provided the inspiration to consider aesthetics as a career choice. After Lisa graduated from LampeterStrasburg High School in 1984, she attended Empire Beauty School and received her cosmetology license. Marriage to George Frankford and raising their three children put Lisa’s career on hiatus, but she eventually explored opening a one-chair salon in her home. Zoning issues prevented that from happening, so instead, she opened a salon at 6 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, in November 2004. That year, George’s father had been dying of cancer, and the experience inspired the salon’s name - Shear Changes. “You can create new things out of adversity,” Lisa explained. “I wanted (the salon) to have impact.” That first salon had two chairs and was “very cozy,” Lisa said, adding, “But hey, small beginnings are great.” After a few years, the Frankfords’ daughter, Nicole Brown, decided to enter the business and completed the cosmetology program at the Brownstown campus of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center. The building at 11
S. Decatur St., Strasburg, became available in October 2007, so Lisa made the purchase, and the family gutted and remodeled the space in three months. The new venue also prompted a name change for the salon - New Creations Studio - based on 2 Corinthians 5:17. “My heart has always been to let women know their beauty ran deeper than their outsides,” Lisa said. “Our motto is ‘We enhance the beauty God has given you.’” While Lisa had pursued continuing education to stay up to date on trends and techniques, she knew she lacked business knowledge, so she began working with Summit Salon Business Center two years ago. A Summit coach has helped Lisa market the salon and increase her clientele. She also began dreaming about expanding the salon’s offerings and creating a day spa experience. “I wasn’t even looking to move at that time,” Lisa recalled. But she shared her dream with a new friend, who recommended Lisa check out the former Java Junction building at 9 E. Main St. “Literally, when I walked in here, it took my breath away. They had totally remodeled,” she said. In February this year, Lisa informed her staff that the salon was moving. Then in mid-March, everything came to a screeching halt with the declaration of the stay-at-home order. Lisa’s sister recommended she contact SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon, and while the salon was closed, Lisa reviewed her plans with a SCORE

Lisa Alcala is passionate about dispelling the stigma that is sometimes attached to mental health, especially among young people. “A thing I really feel is important is educating children in school that mental health is a medical issue,” said Lisa. “(Having a mental health issue) doesn’t mean you’re different. It just means you have something that needs to be treated.” Lisa, who owns The Shack Restaurant & Mini Golf, 662 S. Oak St., Manheim, with her husband, Ray, believes that treatment for a mental health issue should not be viewed any differently than needing vision correction. “If you have an eye problem, you go to the doctor to get glasses,” she said. “I think kids need to hear that (connection) a lot. It makes it real.” Back in February, Lisa contacted Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) to see how she could help promote an enhanced understanding of mental health in children and teenagers. One result of that connection will be a Mini Golf Tournament held at The Shack

on Saturday, Sept. 19. All funds raised by the tournament, which can accommodate a total of 76 players, will go to MHALC to help promote mental health through advocacy, education, and support. Golfers may check in for the tournament at 9:30 a.m. that day. The tournament will start at 10 a.m. A heavy rain date has been set for Saturday, Sept. 26. According to Lisa, the 19-hole course has been called “the most challenging course in Lancaster County.” “The best score here has been a 58,” she said, noting that most people score in the 80s. The tournament will be in a scramble format with a shotgun start. “A shotgun start is when everybody is assigned a hole, and they all start at the same time,” said Lisa. “(Players) keep their ball and finish all the holes.” She also explained that in a scramble, all the players play from the best spot. “Everyone moves their ball to that spot (after the first shot),” she said. Prizes will include trophies and cash for the top three players and a closest-to-the-hole prize. “We will pick a hole and someone will be out there to measure who is closest on the first shot,” Lisa said. There will also be door prizes and opportunities to purchase meal packages ahead of the tournament day. Some of the sponsors for the tournament include Engle Printing

with MHALC in some capacity. “My life has been touched by (mental health issues) in multiple areas,” she shared. “I just feel like it’s an underrepresented cause.” Lisa sees the tournament as an opportunity to raise awareness. “I don’t think people realize all the resources they have for people with mental health issues,” she stated. A former educator, Lisa was also involved in an MHALC focus group that she hopes will be working with area schools. “(The group) had some great ideas about introducing curriculum and ways to reach students,” she said. Individuals and teams of two to four players may register by searching for “The Shack Restaurant & Mini Golf” on Facebook and purchasing tickets for the Benefit Mini Golf Tournament. was built in 1769. We must continue to advocate for preservation of this local heritage as our community changes and grows to meet present needs,â€? John Hershey commented. Hershey is the co-chair of the garden tour along with LaJune Ranck and Marilyn Weaver. His home at 48 E. Main St. will be included on the tour. Hershey noted that the society’s first president, Fred Williams, previously lived in the house. Hershey is a landscape architect, and he trials various plants at home before using them in his designs. Between the structured and naturalized areas, the property includes more than 350 different types of trees, shrubs, perennials, vines, and bulbs, as well as annuals and a small kitchen garden. During the tour, Hershey will display pottery shards and other remnants of early household items discarded by previous inhabitants and dug up during the past few years. On the other end of town - and the design spectrum - Ben and Lynn Stiles have developed a backyard living space rather than a garden. A G-scale model train layout and a kiddie crank car track are the prominent features at their circa 1895 home at 212 Georgetown Road. The landscape includes handmade bridges and a waterfall, but some plants are included, such as dwarf Sedums, thyme, and a specimen “White Swanâ€? hydrangea. “We’re most excited about the diversity of these 12 sites, as they represent unique landscape characteristics and gardener personalities inherent to each tour destination,â€? Hershey commented. “Some sites are comprised by a diverse collection of plants. Others incorporate a repurposed piano as a water feature ‌ and an organic garden that supplies a local restaurant with fresh vegetables, fruits, and herbs.â€? Hershey added, “This tour is an opportunity to safely share these gardens - masks and social
distancing will be required - during a pandemic and time of social unrest, as gardens have historically offered solace and inspiration during challenging times. Discounted tickets for the tour may be purchased in advance at Main Street Antiques, 2 W. Main St., Strasburg, and Speckled Hen Coffee, 141 E. Main St., Strasburg. Readers may call 717-687-3534 for more information. Tickets for the pork barbecue will not be sold in advance. Sandwiches, accompanied by chips and water, and platters, which will include meat, baked beans, coleslaw, a roll, and water, will be available as supplies list. The event will be a drive-through, and customers may pull up in front of the church, where volunteers will fulfill their orders. Society president Sue Stirba noted that there will be no Holiday Home Tour this year. Instead, the society is planning a door-decorating contest in December and a greens sale. To learn more about the society and its events, readers may visit www.strasburgheritagesociety.org or find the Strasburg Heritage Society on Facebook.

September will be busy for the Strasburg Heritage Society. The organization’s fifth annual pulled pork fundraiser will take place on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 11 a.m. at St. Michael Evangelical Lutheran Church, 40 E. Main St., Strasburg. The following weekend, on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday, Sept. 20, from noon to 4 p.m., the society will offer the Strasburg Garden Tour: A Prelude to Autumn, a self-guided tour of a dozen sites in Strasburg. Proceeds from these fundraisers will benefit the society, which was formed in 1977 to preserve, collect,
and interpret the rich history of Strasburg. “Thanks in part to the organization’s efforts, Strasburg was voted one of the 10 most historic and picturesque towns in America, Society board member Ann Lainhoff shared. The society has collected artifacts and historic documents related to the borough, and it owns three historic buildings on South Decatur Street. The Shroy House has been undergoing restoration for a number of years, and the society plans to open a museum for Strasburg there. “It is often said that Strasburg has a greater number of surviving 18th-century structures than Colonial Williamsburg. The Giant Company announced that flu vaccinations are now available at all 132 Giant and Martin’s Food Markets in-store pharmacies. New this flu season, Giant and Martin’s pharmacists will also offer drive-up flu vaccinations in select store parking lots from Sunday, Sept. 13, through Saturday, Oct. 17. Patients may pull into a spot in a designated area of the store parking lot and be vaccinated without leaving their car. For customers who cannot be safely vaccinated from inside their vehicle or for walk-up customers, seating will be available. Social distancing measures will be in place if more than one patient is being served. Store locations offering drive-up flu vaccinations, as well as the dates and times, are available at www.giant foodstores.com/flushot or www .martinsfoods.com/flushot. In addition to the drive-up flu vaccinations, customers can visit any in-store pharmacy to receive their vaccination now. Giant and Martin’s pharmacies offer several types of flu shots for children,
adults and seniors. Most insurance plans cover flu shots at $0 copays, including Medicare Part B. Flu shots are administered by immunizing Giant and Martin’s pharmacists, subject to state regulations. No appointment is needed for the in-store and driveup vaccinations.
