Fairmount Schedules Online Auction And Drive-Through Barbecue Annual Fundraiser Changes Locations BY ANN MEAD ASH
Dorothy Witmer, one of the principal organizers of the annual Fairmount Benefit Auction and Chicken Barbecue, is saddened that Fairmount residents will not be enjoying this year’s event as they have in the past. “One of the special struggles is that this has always been a day of celebration for the residents,” said Witmer. “It started out being a special day for them and for families to be with them, and now it is going on without them.” For the safety of Fairmount residents and attendees at the annual event, organizers have moved the 31st annual auction online and made the chicken barbecue a drive-through event at two area locations. Online pre-bidding for the auction will open Friday, Sept. 4. Bidding will start to close on Friday, Sept. 11, at 6 p.m., with all items scheduled to close by 8 p.m. “We will take absentee bids,” said Peter Passage, stewardship director at Fairmount. Witmer explained that those who would like to take part in absentee bidding may do so by calling 717-354-1800. “(When they) leave their maximum bid and contact information, we will bid for them,” said Witmer, who said the option will be available until the auction ends. Auction items may be picked up at New Covenant Mennonite Fellowship, 529 E. Farmersville Road, New Holland,
on Saturday, Sept. 12, beginning at 10 a.m. Auction items may be previewed in person at New Covenant Mennonite Fellowship on Wednesday, Sept. 9, from 4 to 8 p.m.; Thursday, Sept. 10, from 1 to 8 p.m.; and Friday, Sept. 11, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Computers will be available at the church for bidding, and helpers will be available to guide bidders in computer use. Among the many items collected for the auction are 40 full-size quilts and about 60 theme baskets. Themed baskets will include an Outdoor Action basket, a Simply Tupperware basket, a Give Thanks basket, a Down the Garden Path basket, and a Grilling Essentials basket. New furniture, a bright yellow John Deere pedal car with green trim, and a little metal chair will also go up for bids. “We will likely have a utility trailer, a bicycle, and a generator,” said Passage, who added that a variety of gift certificates, including $500 off orthodontic work, will also be auctioned. One specialty item that will be offered is an 11-by-11-inch log cabin wall hanging made with 468 pieces. According to Passage, the intricate piece was created by a granddaughter of a Fairmount resident. Other handmade items will include a pair of Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls with extra clothes. One resident built a freestanding coat tree to donate.
A John Deere pedal car (left photo) and an assortment of quilts (right photo) will all go up for bids when Fairmount holds its Online Auction and Drive-Through Barbecue. The auction will include a selection of beef. “We are selling beef eighths of a cow,” said Passage. “We will have eight eighths up for bids, so that’s a whole cow.” To see photos of auction items and bid online, readers may visit https://fairmounthomes.org/ and click on “Benefit Auction & BBQ.” The link to the photos should be posted by Sept. 4; however, new items may be added after that date. The drive-through chicken barbecue, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12, will be held at New Covenant Mennonite
Fellowship and at E.K. Martin & Sons, 25 Wissler Road, Lititz (just off Route 322 West between Ephrata and Clay). Chicken sales at both locations will be held from 10 a.m. until the chicken is sold out. The chicken barbecue meal will include a leg and thigh, a roll, cheesy potatoes, applesauce, a whoopie pie, and a beverage. An option to purchase two additional leg and thigh pieces will be offered. All funds raised by the event will benefit the Sharing Fund, which provides $2.5 million in uncompensated care for residents annually. Passage noted that
It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. At Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. As a runner, Becky Link, development associate with Friendship Community, knows how 5Ks have been affected by COVID-19 restrictions. While many organized runs have been converted to virtual events, many participants, Link included, miss running in person. So, when Link had the chance to offer input for the annual Friendship Community 5K Run/Walk, she liked the idea of offering options. “We decided to focus on the 5K and have it be both virtual and in-person,” said Link. “Anyone who wants to support us but is feeling hesitant about being in

2020 has been a difficult year for Fairmount. “It has been a struggle for our staff to care for our residents, emotionally and spiritually,” he said. “Our residents have been gracious, strong, and supportive,” he said. “We moved to New Covenant to keep as many people as safe as possible, not only our residents, but also the community.” Passage said he hopes area residents will support the event. “We can only do what we can do because we are hand in hand with the community,” he said. “If people feel led to bid or come to the preview, we welcome that.”

the winners of the in-person race,” reported Link. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female runners, and medals will be awarded to the top three runners in eight age groups. The 2019 race first-place overall finishers were Merlin Lantz of Leola with a time of 18:58 and Ann King of Lititz with a time of 23:16. COVID-19 precautions will include limiting the race to 225 entrants. Masks are encouraged during non-running portions of the event, but are not required during the run. Social distancing will be encouraged. Link explained that the water stations will be self-serve, offering small bottles of water for runners to pick up as they pass. The organization currently serves more than 200 people in various programs, including 27 residential homes, three daytime programs, and those living with their loved ones or independently in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. “We are really trying to think outside the box, as we have had to do for all COVID fundraising,” said Link, who noted that crowd support fundraising will be available this year. “As people register, they can create a fundraising page, so they can find sponsors for their first mile and second mile.” Registrants who want to raise additional funds may do so at http://bit.ly/FC-5K -Fundraise2020. The run/walk race will start at 8 a.m., and awards will be presented at approximately 9 a.m. “(We’re hoping) it won’t be humid in the morning, and it will be great (September) weather,” noted Link. The run will be a professionally timed race on a safe off-road course, which loops through Landis Homes and finishes back at the starting line. Approximately a quarter mile of the course is on grass, a mile is packed fine gravel, and the rest is paved. Link hopes the event will appeal to those who have missed running in traditional 5Ks. “We are trying to expand our horizons by connecting with folks who haven’t heard of us before to do some sort of in-person run because theirs was canceled,” she said. “It will look a little different, but we want to offer that race experience.” Organizers will station people on the course to provide cheers and encouragement to create the exciting race opportunity many runners have been missing. “Part of the fun of running is starting at the line … hearing the gun go off … we want to pay respect to those people who haven’t had any (live) race opportunities,” said Link, who added that because the event is a run/walk, those wishing to take things more slowly are welcome too. “Come and have fun and walk three miles,” she said. “We’re excited for this.” “We have monetary prizes for

LCHS Marching Band Practices Drill
R062872
BY ANN MEAD ASH
When the 48 members of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) marching band gathered at the school, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, in mid-August to start practicing the fall drill, they knew camp would be a little different. “The world is different, and we are changing with the world,” said Jacob Fertal, vice president of the band, referring to the pandemic and the restrictions associated with COVID-19. The band members met from Aug. 10 to 13 to begin learning the drill to a program titled “Resilience.” Practices were also held Aug. 18 to 20 and Aug. 25 to 27.

“Resilience” will be performed in three parts, beginning with “We Are Family,” moving into the ballad, which is “The Sound of Silence,” and finishing with “Daft Punk Medley.” Fertal explained how each segment of the show relates to the theme. “With everything that is going on in the world, we think a lot of resilience is Nearly 50 members of the Lancaster Catholic High School marching band met at the school during three weeks in August to practice the fall drill, aptly titled “Resilience.” needed,” he said, noting that different ideas because it would “We Are Family” focuses on be easier to learn and allowed staying together to get through for social distancing. instruments to further enhance safety. Anna Cancilla, mellophone section leader, said that to keep camp fun, members have focused on simple things. Some band members have volunteered to talk about their experiences to help encourage others. As in the past, theme days that pay homage to clothing from different decades or ask students to dress in the purple and gold school colors have been held. Although the group has dealt with a number of changes, including the cancellation of their own annual fall band showcase, Scott said that the students are happy to be back together. “There’s a lot about band camp that is different, she shared. “But Monday was

said. Additional student leaders are band president Freddy Arnold, wind section leader Isabella Folts, drumline section
leader Alex Lopez, front ensemble section leader Lizbeth Stephan, color guard captain Katie Lyle, and sanitation coordinator Christopher Johnson.

With unemployment in the double digits nationally and with limits on how much socialization can be done in person, starting a blog might seem like an ideal solution. Bloggers can earn an income while interacting with people outside their own households from the safety of their homes. However, there is more to becoming a successful blogger than just opening a WordPress account. It is easy to start a blog, but it can be challenging to keep it going. “I stay motivated because I picked a topic that is just our life. It’s something that I’m very interested in,” said Ephrata resident Kathy McClure, who launched the Frugal Lancaster blog in 2010. “Don’t start a blog on something new to you. Choose something that you’re already doing and interested in.” McClure began blogging as a way to share with others how she and her husband saved money while raising children. Initially, the blog
Kathy McClure focused on how to use coupons effectively. It also featured a part-discount, partreferral deal program, and McClure estimated that her family saved more than $1,000 on dining and entertainment thanks to the program that first year. As the family grew and ways to save money changed from coupons to gas points, the blog also shifted. “I just share about things I use and do myself,” McClure said. “Most of the time, it’s just, we’re living life, and I share it.” During the last few
months, McClure has seen people starting blogs on current hot topics such as homesteading and homeschooling. “Look at your gifts and your interests. Look at what people are asking you about and go from there. Be creative. Try it and see what works. Some people start channels for their pets,” she said. “If it brings you joy, (consider it for a blog). We’re in a time where we need things that bring us joy.” There are multiple ways to earn an income through a blog. Traditionally, these have included advertisements placed on a page as well as sponsored posts in which businesses pay bloggers to write about products or events. Now, there are services like Patreon through which bloggers may offer special access to posts on Instagram or subscriptions so readers will not see ads on their blogs. earning an income from blogging. McClure spends as much time on Facebook and Instagram posts as she does on blog posts, and she uses her blog as a content resource center where she creates posts that she shares on social media. “I think I’ve become more of an influencer than a blogger,” she said. “It’s a lot of Instagram stories and posts that people connect with.” Posting to social media is relatively simple because images, not text, are the focus, but McClure expressed a bias toward having a blog as a backup. “If Instagram goes down, you still have all your stuff (on your blog),” she explained. “The email list (of your subscribers) is yours.” Internet trolls - people who post comments designed to cause upset or derail conversations - are an unfortunate reality of the blogosphere. The majority of feedback on McClure’s posts has been positive, but when the occasional troll pops up, McClure simply deletes the comment. Other times she allows the comment to remain but does not respond, and yet other times she engages. Each instance has to be handled on a caseby-case basis, she noted. When McClure began blogging in 2010, she used her degree in new media technology from Rochester Institute of Technology to build her own website. Now, there are many services available to help bloggers manage their posts. In addition to WordPress, McClure listed Buffer and Later for scheduling Facebook and Instagram posts, respectively; MailerLite and ConvertKit for email marketing; E-junkie for file downloads; and Tailwind for managing Pinterest. McClure also recommended connecting with other bloggers and is herself a member of a Facebook group for Lancaster County bloggers. Thanks to work she put into the blog in the early years when her children were little, McClure now needs to spend only about five hours a week on it. Ultimately, patience, persistence, and dedication are key to running a successful blog. “Don’t expect the money right away,” McClure advised. “You’re doing it to share whatever you know, your knowledge. You’re doing it to connect with people.”

Volunteers from Donegal Insurance Group spruced up the grounds of Lancaster EMS’ Lincoln Highway East station in Lancaster during a morning of service on July 31. While Lancaster EMS’ first responders continued their focus and attention on the community’s medical needs, nearly a dozen Donegal volunteers spent a few hours pulling weeds, mulching, and planting flowers and shrubs along the exterior of the East Lampeter Township station. Shrubs, perennials, and
mulch were donated for the project by Hegeman’s Landscape & Tree Service. With an emphasis on safety, volunteers followed all CDC regulations and guidelines, such as social distancing, for this project. Following completion of the gardening, Donegal provided lunch for volunteers and Lancaster EMS administrative staff and first responders.

S TAY S A F E So our community can stay open. It’s good to be open. But to stay open, we need to stop the spread of COVID-19. We can do that with three simple steps: • Wear a mask in public
• Wash your hands often
• Maintain social distance — 6 feet
These methods have been shown to work. So let’s keep at it. Thank you for doing your part.
