Additional food and beverages will be for sale from noon to 2 p.m. The auction will begin at noon and will feature needlework, quilts, artwork, furniture, sports tickets and memorabilia, vacation opportunities, gift certificates, and more. The Kensill Fund is a nonprofit educational fund named in honor of the late Rev. Frank Kensill. His goal was to provide educational opportunities to inner-city youths at the church he served in Philadelphia. For details about the auction or to donate an item, readers may visit www.leolaumc.org or call 717-560-2865. MONTHLY EVENT
The Swing Thru Square Dance Club will hold its regular monthly Plus Level Square and Round Dance on Friday, Sept. 28, from 7:30 to 10 p.m., with pre-rounds at 7 p.m. The event will be held in the gymnasium at Lancaster Brethren in Christ Church, 1865 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster. There is a cost per person, but club members may attend for free. For more details, contact Jim Miller at 717-725-1991 or carolannejim@gmail.com.
Jennifer Cavalcante is a photographer. “I (take pictures) of (wildlife), animals, and people,” explained Cavalcante, as she held a print of flowers so vividly hued the piece resembles a painting. “(This photograph) is printed on watercolor paper, and the paper makes (the colors) really pop,” she said. Cavalcante will be one of nearly 50 professional artists who will take part in the Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Art Show that will be held rain or shine on the Boettcher House Museum grounds on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. An art walk, which will feature about a dozen high school artists, will be open from noon until 3 p.m. on the day of the show. Items that artists and craftspeople will bring to sell at the show will include jewelry, mixed media, abstract art, landscapes, watercolor paintings, and
more. The show is billed as a child-friendly and pet-friendly event. Artist Paris Llanso, known for her distinctive paintings featuring bright colors and large amounts of oil paint sculpted with a palette knife, will showcase her work including a painting of a birch tree she refers to as her “Skittles tree” because she used all the hues of the fruity candy in the piece. Lisa Madenspacher has turned her interest from goats, which she featured at the 2017 show, to pool, with a painting of oversized brightly colored billiard balls being among the pieces she will bring to the show. “I am continually inspired by my environment,” said Madenspacher. “I see composition,” she added, noting that she was invited to a dinner party and noticed the pool table at the venue. “Wherever I go, I am observant of my environment,” she stated. See Art Show pg 4
Artists and musicians who will be among many to participate in the 2018 Landis Woods Art Show on Sept. 29 include (from left) Paris Llanso, Jennifer Cavalcante, Stephen Gambone, Lisa Madenspacher, and John Beaumont.

Garret Yoder, a member of Scout Troop 8, which meets at the Bird-in-Hand United Methodist Church, knew David G. Haldeman because the longtime Paradise Rotary Club member was serious about his position as charter representative with the troop. “Haldeman was the charter representative for 30 years,” said Garret’s father, Kevin. “He came to Scout picnics and banquets.” After Haldeman passed away in March of 2017, Scoutmaster Luther Wagner recommended Garret find a way to honor the Rotarian with his Eagle Scout project. “I was walking through (Flory Park off Strasburg Pike) in the summer of 2017,” recalled Garret. “I noticed this See Scout Project pg 7
Foster Care Orientation Classes Posted By Ann Mead Ash
Don Fitzkee, director of development for COBYS Family Services, easily recalls the earliest days of the organization’s existence in 1980. “We began as a teen foster care agency with foster families in private homes,” said Fitzkee. During the last few years, COBYS has grown extensively in response to the drug epidemic. “You read stories in the newspaper about people affected by the opioid crisis,” said Fitzkee, “but you See COBYS pg 4
To meet the growing need in the community, COBYS Family Services purchased a building on Murry Hill Circle in Lancaster and moved a number of staff to that location. Christened the Murry Hill Center, the building is the site of monthly foster parenting orientation classes, as well as adoption and foster care services.

Lydia’s mother, Helen, said that Lydia likes dancing because it gives her exercise and energy, but she added that the benefits are more than physical. “It has opened a window (for Lydia),” said Helen, who added that Lydia had always dreamed of becoming an Olympic gymnast. “Even though (Lydia) recognizes she can’t do gymnastics, her (dance) recitals have been amazing.” Helen also spoke glowingly of Lydia’s experience meeting other students at Cavod. “She hasn’t had a lot of contact with other students, but when she has (met them), they have been welcoming and kind,” said Helen. “That doesn’t always come naturally, (so) that speaks highly of the academy, (and) it means so much to (Lydia).” Intro to Dance will delve into a number of types of dance, including jazz, modern, and hiphop, but Haney said she plans to start with a focus on ballet. “Students will come in, stretch, work at the bar practicing positions and steps, (perform) some technical work, and then do acrossthe-floor progression type steps,” said Haney, who added that she plans to end each class with some imaginative guided dance to reinforce freedom and joy of movement. Dienner noted that the students with developmental disabilities taking private lessons have enjoyed their accomplishments. “The students ... here have just blossomed,” she said. “We thought, ‘Let’s start a program where they can learn to dance at a (comfortable) pace, with a goal of transitioning students into another class as their capabilities improve.’” Dienner noted that a limited number of scholarships are available to cover half of the cost of a class. Classes began the week of Aug. 27, but it is not too late to register. Readers who would like to sign up or apply for a scholarship may visit www.cavodacademy.com. Individuals who have questions about the new class may call 717-354-3355.

don’t read about the children involved.” Fitzkee noted that many of those children go into foster care. “COBYS is trying to care for those children while their parents deal with those issues,” explained Fitzkee. In response to the crisis and to legislation that has resulted in more children going into foster care, COBYS has its increased staff - nearly doubling in size from early 2015 to January 2018 - and increased its organizational budget to more than $5 million. According to Fitzkee, the COBYS building at 1417 Oregon Road, Leola, which housed foster care, adoption, administration, and counseling, was getting a little overcrowded. “We had three to four people in offices, and we were shuttling (employees) to a church for parking because we didn’t have enough space for people coming for counseling (appointments),” said Fitzkee. “We were just running out of space.” Fitzkee said that COBYS engaged a local consulting group to determine the best way to
move forward. “One of the things that came out of that process was that we began looking for a new building,” said Fitzkee. In January, COBYS purchased the building located at 444 Murry Hill Circle, Lancaster, and christened it the Murry Hill Center. “On Martin Luther King Day, we had 59 volunteers there removing carpet, sanding, priming, and painting for nearly 700 volunteer hours in renovations,” Fitzkee recalled. In February, COBYS adoption and foster care staff moved to the new building, and later the Family Life Education staff joined them at that location. COBYS administration remained in Leola, and the counseling center moved to the main floor of the Leola building. Fitzkee noted that COBYS also owns two buildings in Lancaster city, including one at 171 E. King St., where the organization’s Family Life Center offers parenting programs, and the permanency unit at 134 E. King St., where a specialized foster care program operates in relationship with the Lancaster County Children and Youth Agency. “ We work with (the

step (for people) interested in becoming a foster parent or adopting through COBYS is to attend (a) free, no-obligation orientation (to) get an overview of what the process involves,” said Fitzkee. Stephen Gambone’s artwork was chosen as the logo for this year’s show. Gambone is a selftaught painter who has had a passion for art from an early age. For 2018, his featured work will include the painting on which the logo is based, an abstract skyline featuring shapes in uniform lines reminiscent of a circuit board. “It’s simple, but it’s complex,” noted Gambone. During the event, organizers will hold hourly drawings for gift certificates toward the purchase of artwork. Each attendee will receive a ticket as he or she enters the event. Refreshments will be available for purchase from the Neffsville Mennonite Church youth group. Both admission and parking are free, and additional parking will be available this year in the field on the south side of Hillside Lane. In addition to art, the annual event will include live music in the woods. Event organizer John Beaumont, a member of TJ Earley, has lined up four groups to play throughout the day. Musical groups will include the Stone Soup String Band playing old-time mountain music with fiddles, spoons, banjo, guitar, mandolin, and limberjack at 9:30 a.m. At 11:15 a.m., the Steve Barth Band will play rock tunes and soft rock covers. At 1 p.m., Sorrentino Jazz Band will entertain with tunes designed to appeal to people of all ages, and at 2:45 p.m., TJ Earley will play originals and covers of blues, rock, and soft rock songs. Attendees may enter the event grounds from either Hillside Lane or Meadow Lane, located off Lititz Pike in Neffsville. A shuttle will be available to transport those in need of assistance from the parking area to the exhibit area. Readers who would like to learn more may visit www.landis woodsartshow.org.

CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health will offer two events with Kim John Payne, a parenting consultant, trainer and author. A lecture, “Simplicity Parenting: An Evening with Kim John Payne” will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. and a “Simplicity Parenting Workshop with Kim John Payne” will be held on Sunday, Sept. 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Both events will be held at the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences, 850 Greenfield Road, Lancaster. The Simplicity Parenting lecture held on Sept. 29 will introduce parents to the concept of Simplicity Parenting, a simple, orderly and effective pathway to simplify their homes and schedules, reducing stress on children and parents, and allowing room for connection, creativity and relaxation. The four realms of the Simplicity Parenting concept include environment, rhythm, scheduling, and unplugging. The Simplicity Parenting workshop on Sept. 30 will build upon the concepts within the lecture, help parents identify the areas within their family life where change is needed, and take steps towards making small, practical plans to bring balance back into daily life. Individuals are encouraged to attend both the lecture and workshop; however, participants may register for either session individually and are not required to attend both. Payne has served as a consultant and trainer to more than 230 U.S. independent and public schools and has served as a counselor, adult educator, consultant, researcher and educator. He regularly gives keynote addresses at international conferences for educators, parents and therapists, and runs workshops and trainings around the world. Both events are free and open to the public. Registration is required, and tickets are available at http://chistjosephchildrens health.eventbrite.com.

Cats may be adopted from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day As a nationally recognized initiative, the Free to a Great Home program was created in 2005 to provide free cat adoptions to qualified adopters throughout the community. Throughout the weekend, families can view, select, and meetand-greet with cats that are available for adoption. To view the cats that are available for adoption, readers may visit www.humanepa.org/ adoption. They may also meet the cats at the shelter during the scheduled operating hours. into molds at home,” explained Garret, who said the bench was completed in May and placed in the park, 416 Dohner Dr., Lancaster, on June 16. The plaque was added during a special ceremony attended by Rotary Club members and Haldeman’s widow, Mary, on Aug. 16. Garret worked with Rotary Club of Paradise president Bill Dewan to obtain the plaque. A local gardening business provided a number of perennials to be planted around the bench. Garret will meet with Scout administrators during September to complete approval for his Eagle Scout recognition. The Conestoga Valley High School senior looks forward to scheduling his Court of Honor once the approval process is finished. The Rotary Club of Paradise meets at noon each Thursday at the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant, 2760 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand. Scout Project from pg 1 area was empty, and I thought it was a good spot to put an Eagle Scout project.” Garret considered what to do with the open area located in front of a stone wall, and he decided that a bench and a plaque would give area residents a chance to relax and learn about Haldeman’s service to the community. The plaque that the Paradise Rotary sponsored for the site lists Haldeman’s membership in the Bird-in-Hand Fire Company, his volunteerism with the Scouts, his charter membership with the East Lampeter Park Board, and his nearly 60 years of perfect attendance at Rotary Club meetings among his accomplishments. Garret received approval for his project from Scout administrators on Sept. 11, 2017. The park board approved the placement of a bench on the spot in the same month. He and his father, supported by his mother, Carla, began working on the bench in late 2017 and continued into the winter of 2018. “We poured the concrete

Restaurants The division of nursing at Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences held its second annual Dedication of Hands ceremony on Aug. 22. All nursing students were invited to take part in the event, which stresses the significance of a nurse’s hands as symbols of the holistic care nurses provide to a patient’s mind, body and spirit. The Dedication of Hands is a new ceremony for Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences nursing students, replacing the historical tradition of capping ceremonies, during which novice students would receive their cap prior to attending their first clinical experience and returning students would receive a stripe indicating their program year. During the ceremony, faculty members performed the washing and drying of hands, symbolically uniting faculty and students in the profession of nursing. Faculty member Kay Buchanan and Sage Olnick, Class of 2005, were set to offer keynote remarks during three sessions offered throughout the day. The legacy of nursing care was celebrated through the inclusion of two special guests. Cassie Kohr, a student in the three-year
Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, attended with Mary Coldren Kurian, a 1936 graduate of the school, then the Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. Now 103 years old, Mary is believed by the college to be its oldest living alumna. Kurian enjoyed a long career at Lancaster General Hospital as a nurse anesthetist, retiring in 1980. Kohr and Kurian met at Homestead Village in Lancaster, where Kohr works part
time and Kurian has lived since 1996. While nursing education and practice have changed dramatically since Kurian entered the field, the two women have bonded over their shared devotion to the profession. After learning that Kurian’s 1936 class photo had been misplaced during a move, Kohr worked with the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences’ office of alumni relations to find a replacement, which she gave to Mary as a Christmas gift last year.
A benefit banquet for the Nicholas Stoltzfus House Project will be held at Fairmount Homes, 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata, on Friday, Sept. 21, at 6 p.m. The program “From Germany to Pennsylvania: The Stoltzfus Story” will be presented. Elam, Nic, Zach, and Lucy Stoltzfus, as well as Rose Beiler, spent time in Germany this past summer to document Nicholas Stoltzfus’ early life. They will share photos and documents and tell of contacts and discoveries they made about Nicholas Stoltzfus and his forebears. Stoltzfus is the most frequent name among Lancaster County Amish, and every Stoltzfus in the country can trace their roots back to him. For more information regarding the history of Nicholas Stoltzfus and the ongoing preservation project, readers may visit www.nicholasstoltzfus.com. Directions are available at www.fairmounthomes.org.
Mary Coldren Kurian (left) displayed the class photo she received from Cassie Kohr (right) as a Christmas gift last year. The photo pictures Kurian’s 1936 class at Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. Kurian and Kohr were special guests at Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences’ division of nursing’s second annual Dedication of Hands ceremony on Aug. 22.

Terry and Joyce Hornberger Gehman celebrated their 50th anniversary on Aug. 25 at a surprise drop-in party at Greenfield Inn in Lancaster. The party was hosted by the couple’s daughters and their families. Terry and Joyce met in 1963 at a dance at the Ephrata Rec Center while Terry was playing in a band. Joyce asked him to dance during one of his breaks. The Gehmans were married at Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity in Ephrata by the Rev. Franklin Patschke and the Rev. David Ebersole on Aug. 25, 1968. They have two daughters, Angela, wife of Tom Berkosky of Gilbertsville, and Lisa, wife of Geoffrey Schreibeis of Abingdon, Md. Terry was a professional musician at an early age. He graduated from Ephrata High
School in 1965 and Lebanon Valley College in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in music education. He taught for 33 years in the Conestoga Valley School District. He and Joyce also operated a music production company, Anjoli Productions, for 35 years, booking entertainment throughout the Northeast. Joyce graduated from Ephrata High School in 1966. She then graduated from Judy Greenwood Modeling School and was a professional freelance model most of her life. She was also a stay-at-home mom and much later in life retired from Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Hellers, in Leola as a church secretary. Terry and Joyce love traveling in their RV. They have visited all 50 states and have traveled extensively in Europe on river cruises, as well as taking ocean cruises.

CV Gridders Reclaim Lampeter Bowl Trophy by Leah Sintic
The Friday night lights had a little extra shine at Conestoga Valley last week as the Buckskins recaptured the rights to the Lampeter trophy for the first time since 2010 and treated a packed home crowd to a 20-7 victory against backyard rival L-S. “Our kids have worked so hard to regain this trophy. We beat a very good football team, and our kids earned the right to have their team year on the trophy forever,” celebrated head coach Gerad Novak. “It was not only a great win for our football team, but also the parents, community and our incredible student body.” This highly anticipated clash signified the 9th year for the tradition-an annual faceoff between Conestoga Valley, representing East Lampeter, and Lampeter-Strasburg for the West. The Pioneers and Buckskins began the unofficial bowl tradition in 2010, awarding the victor a trophy to remain in possession until the subsequent yearand for CV, that trophy has been in the hands of the Pioneers for far too long. While the Buckskins claimed the inaugural victory in 2010, they had yet to repeat their success and were hungry for it heading into Friday’s faceoff. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a non-league or a league game, your mental preparation and approach better be the same,” Novak emphasized before the game. “You have to approach every game like it’s the championship game because every game matters.” A scoreless first quarter only heightened the sense of urgency and heading into the second, the Buckskins were the first to break into the end zone when Keegan Martin ran the ball for the touchdown and Joe Cardina followed up with the extra point. L-S retaliated with a TD of their own to knot the score at seven apiece at halftime. Another scoreless quarter in the third piled even more pressure into the fourth, where all the action went in favor of the Bucks for an explosive two TD effort that sealed their victory. Quarterback Bradley Stoltzfus found Cardina in the zone for a 34-yard pass for the go-ahead completion, but the Bucks weren’t finished yet, and Martin ran his second TD home, capped by a successful Cardina PAT, to register a beaming 20-7 CV scoreboard at the end of the night. “The thing I was most proud of was the effort of the entire team. Not only the players on the field, but also the players on the sideline. Everyone was com-

pletely into the game and never let up,” described Novak. “They played every down with every ounce of energy in their bodies. It was great to see our football team play with the effort which is necessary to win a rival game and to proudly hoist the Lampeter Bowl Trophy for everyone involved in the CV football program.” GIRLS’ SOCCER Kicking off their league competition last week, the Lady Bucks got things off on the right foot, taking down Manheim Township last Tuesday with a 2-0 shutout before registering their second draw of the season in a 1-1 battle at Warwick. Demonstrating persistence and unselfish play, the young club worked their way down the field and earned themselves 10 corner kicks over the span of 80 minutes. Even more importantly, they capitalized on those opportunities, netting a goal in each half, with both successes stemming from a corner kick setup. Madison Delgado delivered the first blow at the 29th minute, ricocheting her shot from the corner off Township’s keeper before it crossed the goal line for her third goal of the season. Six minutes into the second half another Delgado corner sailed into the box finding Gabbie Barone who headed the ball into the net. “We passed the ball better than we have all season,” noted head coach Keith Nagley. Defensively, CV thwarted each Township advancement to preserve the shutout, with sophomore Alyson Riggle holding the line as keeper and grabbing two saves, and tasking Reese Lapp with stifling Township’s leading striker. “Reese Lapp played a great game against their best attacking player and limited her chances at a goal,” pointed out Nagley. The CV team graduated eight seniors last year, and found themselves making massive adjustments to their starting lineup for the 2018 season. “We are a bit inexperienced, so the girls are still getting accustomed to the speed of play at the varsity level,” explained Nagley. In Thursday’s 1-1 final against Warwick, the Warriors got ahead early, slipping their lone goal into the Buckskin net after only three minutes, but CV remained tenacious and was rewarded with the equalizer early in the second half. A Warrior foul provided CV with a free kick, taken by Barone, who powered Photo by Mark Palczewski the ball past Warwick’s keeper. Pet Pantry’s Mobile Unit To Debut At Open House By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Visitors to the annual open house hosted by the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County at 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. will be able to tour the organization’s new mobile unit. “We just christened it, and we’ve been debugging it. We have to tweak (the process) so it’s honed, said Pet Pantry executive director Melody Sanders. “We will start scheduling more appointments (after the) fall, and we’re hoping to find someone to pull it. (Once it’s fully operational), I think it will be a valuable resource for the community. The mobile unit was designed to serve three purposes. First, the traveling veterinary facility can host feral clinics on farms or in communities where feral cats live in abundance. Spay/neuter and vaccination services will be available during those clinics. “We’re trying to get a trapneuter-release initiative going, Sanders said. “We’re willing to work with communities who can get out there and trap (feral cats). Second, the mobile unit can host vaccine clinics for family
pets. It is important to ensure animals are current on protection from rabies, distemper, and other viruses. Third, the brightly colored trailer will be an eye-catching addition to promotional events. It is air-conditioned, so cats that are available for adoption will be able to rest comfortably for folks to meet inside. The open house will include selfguided tours of the Pet Pantry’s headquarters, visits with adoptable cats, a meet-and-greet with canine mascot Sasha, and refreshments. Pets are welcome to accompany their owners and pose together for fall fun pictures for a fee. A limited number of Halloween costumes will be available for pets to wear in the photos. Additional costumes may be purchased in the fully stocked thrift shop. Folks may also buy tickets for the third annual bingo fundraiser that will be held on Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Columbus Association, 1575 New Danville Pike, Lancaster, and order their bulbs for the annual Light the Way to Meet the Need event. Bulbs may be dedicated in memory or honor of pets and people. They will be displayed at the Pet Pantry during

each month. Distributions take place in Gap and Coatesville, as well as at Water Street Mission and the Pet Pantry. The organization supplies food to rescue groups on an emergency basis. The Pet Pantry also supports more than 140 cats that are available for adoption. Most of the animals live in foster homes, but a few temporarily reside at the Pet Pantry.
