VOL LVI • NO 43 Seniors taking part in the Lancaster Mennonite High School production of “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten” are (front, from left) Isabella Astuto, Sarah Baak, (back) Rebecca Stoltzfus, Megan Esch, Josiah Esch, and (not pictured) Noelle Stringer.

LMHS Takes “Kindergarten” (The Play) Outdoors I Timothy 4:12 reads, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young.” Isabella Astuto, Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) senior and a member of the cast of the school’s upcoming production of “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten,” noted a main message of the play is to not disregard the knowledge of youths. “Just because children are younger, (that) doesn’t mean there aren’t also things that kids can experience that are worthwhile to learn and know,” she said, adding that a lot of the vignettes in the play reflect that theme. “Kindergarten,” based on Robert Fulghum’s books, examines the profound in everyday life. The show will be staged outside at the school , 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Oct. 15, 16, and 17, at

6:30 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 3 p.m. Attendees should bring lawn chairs and blankets. Play director Dean Sauder said that he chose the show for several reasons, including having produced it before, the set’s easy adaptation to an outdoor setting, and its compatibility with social distancing the ensemble cast. The series of vignettes includes characters such as a shy little boy who insists on playing “pig” in his class production of “Cinderella,” a man whose dream of flying carries him over Los Angeles in a lawn chair buoyed by weather balloons, a “mother of the bride” who has staged a perfect wedding until fate arrives, and a modern-day Greek philosopher who finds the meaning of life in a piece of a broken mirror from World War II. Because of his familiarity with the show, Sauder has encouraged the students to bring their own ideas to

the production. “I am enjoying watching them create,” he noted. In response, the students are enjoying the fun and rising to the challenges of “Kindergarten.” Josiah Esch noted that the stories are funny, especially one called “The Stuff in the Sink,” which he said is his favorite because of the exaggerated humor. Isabella noted that although the piece is silly, it also points out the value in each person’s experience. Cast member Megan Esch said that she sees value the individual vignettes. “They each have a purpose and teach lessons,” she said, noting that her favorite is “Problems and Inconveniences,” which features an older person looking back on irrational outbursts of the past. “(The person now) realizes the difference between a problem and an inconvenience,” she shared. The small cast size and adaptability to performing outdoors also

present challenges for the students. “We only have five weeks to get this together,” said Isabella. “It’s a struggle having to adapt to the times to be able to get this done.” Josiah agreed, noting that each actor plays a number of characters with distinct personalities. Sarah Baak noted that she has a monologue in the show, which is new for her. “It’s just me up there, and (it’s a challenge) to fill that space,” she said. Sarah sees the experience as a reflection of the theme. “As the title suggests, a lot of the lessons you learn in childhood show up in your everyday life as you grow older,” she noted. “The play reflects how you can get distracted from (what you learned when you were young).” Tickets to the show may be purchased by calling 717-740-2456, emailing boxoffice@lancaster mennonite.org, or visiting www.lancastermennonite.org.

Entering the Bench Mark facility on East Liberty Street in Lancaster is a little like entering a secret club. A short hallway leads to a door that opens into a room filled with serious weightlifting equipment. The brightly colored walls are covered with graffitilike artwork paying homage to superheroes. According to founder and executive director Will Kiefer, the design is intentional. “We filled the space with color because we want it to be energetic,” said Kiefer. “We want it to be something that for (students who participate) feels very special,” he added, noting that the organization serves those ages 14 to 24. Most students are referred by a probation officer, therapist, or guidance counselor. Kiefer added that many students who come to Bench Mark to exercise are often See Bench Mark pg 5

Scholarship Fund Can Help Provide Programs For Students BY ANN MEAD ASH

“The kids get to meet some of the same animals (as a live show), but they get to meet some different animals as well,” said Jesse Rothacker, founder and president of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary in Manheim, who pointed out that Gila monsters have been part of all the virtual programs the organization has done since COVID-19

Rothacker sees benefits in the change. “We don’t usually bring venomous lizards, but now that we’re doing it virtually, (students) can be up close to the nose of a Gila monster and actually see the beady texture of their skin without liability or concern for the schools or teachers.” To allow Rothacker to bring more information about a

number of different types of reptiles, including box turtles, boa constrictors, alligators up to three feet, geckos, and tortoises, to students from prekindergarten through college, across the county and beyond, the organization instituted the Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary Scholarship Fund in 2019. Rothacker reported that the fund was initiated by grants from Refreshing Mountain Camp and Ephrata National Bank. Rothacker explained that as a nonprofit that serves nonprofits, the scholarship fund could benefit organizations such as schools, churches, and Scouting groups, for which the up to $400 pricetag of a Forgotten Friends program could be an issue. “We aren’t $1,000, but we aren’t $50,” said Rothacker, who noted that the main revenue source for the rescue is programming. “We have so many good groups that want to host our programs,” he said. Rothacker has a particular interest in how virtual reptile programs can help schools fulfill environmental science curriculums. “ We wanted scholarship funds available because so many of the schools are trying to figure

out day to day,” he said. “We want to alleviate some costs by offering free or discounted programs through our scholarship fund.” Rothacker explained that partial scholarships could lower the cost of a program significantly. According to Rothacker, virtual shows are similar to live shows, but they offer an additional multimedia presentation. Different programs are developed for high school and college-age students. “I take a program and present it differently to each audience,” said Rothacker. “With elementary or preschool, it is heavier on interactive hand motions and repeating words.” For older students, Rothacker may tackle weightier subjects. The saga Rothacker calls “Our Virtual Journey” began when the state was shut down by COVID-19 restrictions in March. “May through September is our main season for programs,” said Rothacker, who noted that of 200 yearly shows, about 150 occur in spring and summer. “Our season was crushed,” he said. The situation sent Rothacker on a mission to provide contactfree safe options that will give the schools some of the tools they need for environmental science supplements that include classroom visitors. Rothacker was initially hesitant to go virtual, but he moved forward, investing in lighting, a greenscreen, and other electronic equipment, and he soon began to recognize the power of virtual presentations. “With alligators, they have more than a thousand sensory organs that look like little black dots on their faces and tongues,” he said. “In person, the closest our audience gets is about 6 feet, but (virtually) when we do a closeup, they can see the little black dots.” Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit reptile rescue and education group that has been based in Lancaster County since 2004. Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in the U.S. invites its supporters and the public to join a livestreamed celebration of its 100 years of ministry on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 6:50 p.m. Celebration 2020: MCC at 100 will include videos, storytelling, music, and a message from longtime MCC leader and pastor Leonard Dow of Philadelphia. The celebration also will include stories of MCC’s history told by storyteller Ken Sensenig, who is assistant director of MCC East Coast. Marcella Hostetler of Lancaster, who taught music in schools and directed music in churches for 30 years, is coordinating musical performances for the event in cooperation with a variety of musicians. This event replaces an inperson, multi-day celebration that was originally scheduled for June in Lancaster County. That event was postponed due to the pandemic and is now a livestreamed service only. Participants can join the celebration at www.mcc .org/celebration-2020. Video recordings of the event, subtitled in English and Spanish, will be posted at the same link a few days after the event. As the keynote speaker, Dow will reflect on the challenges MCC has experienced over the past 100 years and the strengths God developed in the organization as a result. With inspiration from Scripture, he will encourage MCC to use its best self to step boldly into the next century of ministry. Dow is a former MCC staff member and board leader. MCC began in 1920 when groups of Mennonites and Mennonite Brethren formed a committee to provide food and other assistance to people affected by war and famine in southern Russia which is present-day Ukraine. Today, MCC provides humanitarian relief, encourages sustainable development, and strengthens peacebuilding initiatives in more than 50 countries. To coincide with the celebration, MCC is inviting congregations to receive a special offering to support MCC’s ministry. Congregations are welcome to plan offerings at their convenience. On her website, Shelleen Weaver describes herself as an author, speaker, singer, songwriter, wife, mother, friend, and daughter. She is also a New Holland resident and one who loves the Word of God. On Saturday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m., Weaver will launch the first installment of her children’s series “Fruit Fables,” published by her own Haste Laud Press, the company she founded to help her share the stories she was telling her own children. “Love Bird,” recommended for children ages 4 to 8, will be the first book of nine based on the biblical Fruits of the Spirit. It tells the tale of a squirrel family that notices a new neighbor above

their home in the oak tree. When they go to introduce themselves, the neighbor, who is a bird, rudely chatters right back at them. During the night, the family hears the bird offending all its neighbors. Quickly, a meeting is called, and the animals decide to only speak kind words to the offensive bird, causing him to return kind words back to them. “ When you choose to love this way, you may see it returned to you,” said Weaver, who added, “(The book is) teaching that love is sometimes a choice you will yourself to carry out. It’s an action, and it’s hard work.” Weaver explained that the stories are meant to teach. “Because I am a mom, the moral of the story is ... if I am going to work to be creative like that, you’re going to get a lesson,” she said. Each book will end with a section called “Let’s Chew on It.” In “Love Bird,” that section includes seven questions, such as “How would you feel if someone was rude to you?” and “The next time someone is unkind to you, how could you respond?” The book also includes a Bible verse, a short prayer, and a theme song. The “Fruit Fables” series was written with encouragement from Weaver’s brother, who overheard her telling her then 3-year-old son Tyler a bedtime story. Some time

later when she was caring for a nephew who had cancer, she found herself exhausted, but struggling to sleep. “I couldn’t turn my head off,” recalled Weaver, who began writing stories to help herself calm down. After her nephew passed away, Weaver looked over the stories she had written. “They were all using animals to unpack a lesson,” she said, adding that she realized she had the makings of a series on the Fruits of the Spirit. Around the same time, she began talking to other local writers, and she attended a 2015 Christian writers’ conference in Hershey. Following the conference, she took a year to work on other projects, but in 2016, she returned to pitch the books for publication. Although Weaver had interest from a publisher, she ultimately decided to publish through her own company, which she named Haste Laud based on the words in the song “What Child Is This?” “Jesus said, ‘If I am lifted up, I will draw men unto Me,’” explained Weaver. “That’s our job. The whole point is to bring Him glory, and He will do work in people’s hearts.” To illustrate the book, Weaver turned to a childhood friend she knew was a capable artist. “I met my illustrator at church camp when I was 11,” recalled Weaver. “I hired him not seeing anything he had

Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.

In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country from violent mobs, immorality, and evil: 1. Get registered to vote. If you’re registered already, decide how you’ll vote. Glenn Davis is adamant that the Santa’s Helpers car show set for Saturday, Oct. 17, take center stage over the organization’s presence in the Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) School District. “We like to be under the radar,” Glenn said. “We just need the car show to do well so we can support the kids.” This is the group’s first car show, although Glenn has attended plenty. He bought a fully restored 1967 Camaro with modifications about 10 years ago. “It would’ve been a very good leading competitor on the drag strip back in its time,” Glenn remarked. “I’ve always been attracted to Camaros. It was my dream car in high school.” Glenn invites other owners of dream vehicles to bring their cars, trucks, and motorcycles to the Santa’s Helpers car show. Street rods, muscle cars, antiques, imports, and more will be welcome. Trophies will be awarded in eight categories. “Everyone’s got a pride factor in their hobby or toy,” Glenn said. “That’s why we didn’t limit them.” The car show will be held at the Lampeter Fire Company grounds, 851 Village Road, Lancaster, from noon to 4 p.m. In the event of rain, the car show will take place on Sunday, Oct. 18, from noon to 4 p.m. Most of the area’s other car shows were canceled this year, so Glenn is anticipating a big crowd. “I’m hoping there are a lot of other car buffs like myself who are chomping at the bit to get out,” Glenn said. “I think it’s going to be a very fun event. I hope to see a lot of people out there.” A fee has been set to exhibit a vehicle. Spectators may attend free of charge. To supplement the eye candy, the event will include music; prize drawings for car cleaning kits, gift cards, cash, and more; photo opportunities with motorhead models by donation; and wood-grilled burgers and hot dogs, other food, and beverages for sale. There will also be a stand where attendees may register to sponsor a child for this year’s gift-giving season. The primary fundraiser for Santa’s Helpers has been a designer bag bingo that would sell out several weeks in advance and raise $15,000. “COVID-19 put a kibosh to

that this year,” Glenn remarked. “The car show won’t raise the funds the bingo did, but something’s better than nothing.” Glenn explained that he and his wife, Johanna, started Santa’s Helpers in 1988 when she noticed that a student at Willow Street Elementary School needed a winter jacket. The Davises purchased outerwear and some other items for the child and delivered them anonymously. The project snowballed from there, with Santa’s Helpers providing clothing and Christmas gifts to an increasing number of students. In 2019, about 100 students in L-S received gifts. The organization spends about $150 per recipient.

A lifelong member of Assembly of God (AG) churches, Mark Thiboldeaux never expected he would pastor a congregation in a different denomination, but the Lord has a way of surprising people. Mark grew up in north Philadelphia and earned a bachelor’s degree in Bible from Valley Forge Christian College. He held youth pastor positions in New Jersey and in Berwick before accepting the role of senior pastor at Strasburg Assembly of God. “When I took it over, it was getting ready to close. I built it back up, but life happened, and we didn’t recover from

so the interim pastor could become the full-time pastor. Mark and the elders also had a long conversation about beliefs and traditions, and he ultimately traded his AG pastoral credentials for COG credentials. “We decided that we would focus on the things we agreed upon,” Mark said. Mark enrolled in a religious global studies program at Liberty University School of Divinity in January. As part of the master’s degree work, he was required to evaluate church life, so he looked at High View. “I saw some very excellent foundational things at the church, but outreach was a gap. They really wanted that to change,” Mark recalled. A prime opportunity was presented with the arrival of the novel coronavirus. Church members dropped off meals to people affected by the virus, whether physically or economically. Then a friend of the church gave a significant financial gift that the church has opted to use to support community meals. Beginning on Oct. 7, the meals will be held on the first Wednesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. free of charge. Registration is not required. Although the church lacks a commercial kitchen, the meals will be prepared under Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture guidelines and will include

Mark Thiboldeaux catered aspects from a local restaurant. A “parenting toolbox” class will follow the meals at 7 p.m. Child care will be provided. Everyone who attends the meals may receive bags of nonperishable foods and gift cards to a local market. The new outreach is a practical way that High View is carrying out the message of Matthew 25, which Mark is currently preaching through. “It’s a basic way of caring for those who are hungry, thirsty, naked, in prison, or foreigners,” he said. Worship services are held on Sundays at 10:15 a.m., Sunday school meets at 9 a.m., and Bible studies take place on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Prerecorded audio messages for worship at home are posted at www.hvcog.org. For more information about High View and the community meals, readers may call the church at 717687-0523.

the 2008 recession,” Mark said, adding that the last year was particularly difficult. The church held its final worship service in May 2019. For the rest of 2019, Mark wrestled with what to do next. He considered taking a break from pastoring, and he and his wife, Julie, discussed moving to Israel so he could concentrate on the teaching tour business he joined in 2017. In December 2019, a colleague at the Charles Snyder Funeral Home, where Mark has worked as a chaplain since 2010, suggested he consider applying to fill the pastoral vacancy at High View Church of God (COG), 2470 Leaman Road, Strasburg. Mark declined the candidacy but agreed to serve as interim pastor. “There were too many doctrinal hurdles and the worship styles were too different,” Mark explained. Two days after Christmas 2019, Mark and Julie left for Israel, spending two weeks relaxing and discerning God’s will. When they returned to Strasburg, Mark began working at High View, primarily just as a preacher for worship services. In April, the pastoral candidate the church was pursuing withdrew his name from consideration, and the church board asked Mark if he would consider staying. To abide by COG regulations, the congregation filed for a waiver

CV Tennis Wins Six Straight to Cap 6-2 Season BY LEAH SINTIC

While CV tennis started the season with a pair of losses, they cranked out six consecutive team victories to end their season 6-2 overall, and 5-2 in league play. Four of those victories came in the final week of competition, with barely a moment to breathe between matches, and last week the Buckskins overcame Ephrata, Penn Manor, Warwick and Cedar Crest over a six-day stretch. Two of the final four triumphs for CV were run-aways, blanking both Warwick and Cedar Crest 7-0, while the other two showdowns battled down to the wire, with CV edging past Ephrata and Penn Manor by the same 4-3 differential. Ellie Kready, Jessica Chen, Jenna Rychener, and Imaan Rana each secured singles victories in both the Warwick and Cedar Crest triumphs, as well as all three CV pairs Kready and Chen, J. Rychener and Megan Rychener, and Rana and Jenna Yingling. Hosting Penn Manor last Monday, the Bucks obtained the 4-3 advantage when J. Rychener and Rana brought in CV points in their individual bouts, as well as in doubles, when paired with Megan Rychener and Jenna Yingling respectively. The prior weekend, when CV bested Ephrata by the same final count, it was Kready and J. Rychener who supplied singles victories, while the teams’ doubles points came from Kready/Chen, as well as the twin sister duo of J. and M. Rychener. Their cumulative efforts were enough to land in third place in Section One, just behind Section champs Manheim Township (8-0) and runner-up Hempfield (7-1). FREE PARKING

Ellie Kready went 6-3 for the season at No. One, a performance that is expected to extend her season into the postseason Flighted Tournament on October 8. Kready and Chen also anticipate a run at a doubles title in the tournament. In regular season play, J. Rychener led the squad with individual wins competing at No. Three singles and garnering a total of seven conquests. “This squad outperformed my expectations,” head coach Dale Gregg summarized. “This group of girls came together and worked hard to pursue their best each day. They overcame quite a number of challenges that were out of their control. With limited practice time and an interrupted early season, they responded on court-a perfect way to show what they can do.” GIRLS’ SOCCER After waiting so long for competition to begin, the Lady Bucks soccer team exploded onto the field with authority last Thursday, pulling ahead for a 4-1 win over the Hempfield Black Knights. Both teams fired nine shots on goal, but the Bucks made more of them count, with both Ana Weiss and Megan Slingluff notching two goals, and one assist apiece. Taylor Horst and Morgan Spencer supplied the other two assists, and on the opposite end of the field keeper Alyson Riggle snatched up eight saves. BOYS’ SOCCER An October first start date to their competitive season, wasn’t what they had planned, but their patience paid off in a home field win for the CV boys’ soccer team last Thursday. After a scoreless first half

against Hempfield, the Buckskins cranked up the pressure in the second half and were rewarded with a 3-1 triumph over the Knights. CV goals were scored by Owen Linder, Richard Valverde-Gomez and Josiah Leaman, with assists credited to Linder and Caden Wanger. CROSS COUNTRY In a four-way meet at Ephrata last Thursday, the CV boys sprinted to a two-win result, registering collective victories over Solanco and Ephrata, and falling behind McCaskey. The first four harriers to cross the line were McCaskey runners, but it was CV ’s Emmanuel Gitonga that broke the Red Tornado streak. Clocking a time of 17:44.4, Gitonga managed to edge ahead of Ephrata’s Nathan Kimmel by half a second to claim the fifthplace spot. A trio of CV runners came through about 45 seconds later, with Timothy Gitonga leading the pack for a 10th place time of 18:30, followed by Adam Harris (18:32), and Micah Aldrich (18:37). Just a few second later, Buckskin teammates Tyler Slingluff and Dante Velasco battled it out to the finish with Slingluff pulling six tenths of a second ahead for a time of 18:44.3 to claim 14th and Velasco (18:44.9)

earned 15th. The girls’ team also celebrated a victory on opening night, taking losses to McCaskey and Ephrata, but topping Solanco in the meet. Junior Kylynn Frankford set the CV time to beat at 21:38 to register an eighth-place finish. Seana Dougherty crossed in 11th (22:07), and Brittney Johns (22:43) and Emily Castronova (22:45) took 14th and 15th respectively just two seconds apart. FOOTBALL Buckskin football is looking to come back stronger after their season opening 41-0 loss at Warwick on September 26. The Warriors were relentless in their attack, but the Buckskin defense was able to hold them scoreless in the second quarter. While the outcome wasn’t what they desired, CV quarterback Macoy Kneisley, a sophomore, threw seven completions for 32 yards, and Booper Johnson advanced the Bucks 65 yards rushing. VOLLEYBALL A 3-0 loss to Penn Manor last Thursday marked the start of the season for Lady Bucks’ volleyball, but they were in the mix in all three games (25-19, 25-18, 25-22). Defensively, Sol Maldanado came up with 10 digs and Madison Williams supplied a pair of

blocks. Going on the attack Rebecca Hartranft fired seven kills for the Buckskin cause. FIELD HOCKEY Field hockey also suffered a similar outcome last Thursday, surrendering low-scoring, 1-0 loss to the Comets of Penn Manor. The first two quarters proved to be a defensive standoff but, in the third, the Comets were able

to connect one of their nine shots on goal. For the other eight, CV keeper, Brooke Eberly, was there for the save. A delayed start to the season means a hectic schedule, and this week the squad faces a formidable schedule of four league matches, with showdowns slated against Warwick, Cedar Crest, Manheim Township, and Cedar Crest.

Ephrata Farm And Art Market Open Through October

When COVID-19 restrictions hit, businesses with services related to live entertainment lost business. Brian Gilpin, owner of Illusion Sound and Lighting of Ephrata, was among them. Looking to diversify, Gilpin contacted business acquaintance Annaruth Diller in mid-July. By July 25, Diller had organized Ephrata Farm and Art Market, which is now held each Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1185 Division Highway (Route 322), Ephrata Gilpin’s place of business. “We’re still growing as people become more aware of (the market),” said Diller on a recent Saturday when about a dozen vendors had set up awnings at the spot. “Normally we have about 18 vendors,” noted Diller. Vendors are located on the west side of the building, with parking on the right.

“The chicken barbecue is here weekly,” said Diller, referring to the origin of a pleasant aroma from the stand located closest to Route 322. Other food vendors include two bakers, and some stands carry produce. “We have artists who are here every week,” Diller noted. Vendors who sell knitted items such as hats, scarves, and shawls are on-site alongside jewelry crafters, and makers of home décor. Jewelry vendors - both handmade and home business representatives - also take part in the market. Diller listed makers of floral arrangements, soaps, spices, and woodcrafts among other vendors who have taken part. Beginning Sept. 19, a percentage of market proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. The benefit will continue through the end of October,

win cash.” Looking ahead, Diller said the market is hoping to offer monster truck rides before the venue closes for the year following the Oct. 31 market. “We plan to open up again in April 2021,” said Diller. Library Friends Plan Book Sale The Friends of the Lancaster Public Library will hold their annual Fall ReSort Book Sale from Friday through Sunday, Oct. 9 to 11. The sale will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 9 and 10, as well as from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the Book ReSort Center,

225 N. Marshall St., Lancaster, located at the corner of North Marshall and Fulton streets. The sale will offer more than 20,000 books of varied subject matter, including fiction and nonfiction. Vinyl records, DVDs, and

audiobooks will be for sale, as well as hundreds of music CDs. On Oct. 11, the Friends will offer a half-price sale. The book sale will operate with COVID-19 safety measures in place. Face masks or face shields must be worn at all times. Shoppers will

enter the sale via the Book ReSort’s side door, accessible from Fulton Street, and they will exit via the back loading dock. In addition, the sale is limited to 25 shoppers at a time to allow for social distancing. Customers are asked to postpone their shopping trip if they are feeling unwell or if they have recently traveled to any states on the Pennsylvania travel quarantine list.

There will be fewer tables of items than usual, so volunteers will continuously restock from the Friends’ inventory of donated books. All proceeds from the sale will directly benefit Lancaster Public Library and play a vital role in the library’s operating budget. Free on-site parking is available, and credit cards are welcome. The Friends of the Lancaster Public Library hold several book sales each year that raise

nearly $200,000 for the library. Additionally, the Friends have two bookstores that are open year-round: the Marshall Street Bookstore, 225 N. Marshall St., which is also the location for donation processing, and the Juliana Bookstore, located on the first floor of the Lancaster city location. For more information about the bookstores and book sales, readers may visit www.lancasterpubliclibrary. org/library-friends.
