J. Arthur Moore of Narvon, author of the Civil War series “Journey Into Darkness,” has recently published his first new book in six years, and he plans to have another book out later this fall. “West to Freedom,” which was released in September, is the story of best friends who in 1862 embark on a journey to free one of them from
When Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster program director Jennifer West and development director Sarah Yohe realized the caliber of some of the local organization’s volunteers last spring, they each wrote letters nominating some of them for the national Remarkable Volunteer Award given by GOTR International. The nonprofit, which promotes good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living among girls, chooses 36 winners from hundreds of entries.

BULK OR BAGGED
Dear Brother or Sister in Christ,
Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American flags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.
Celebrating 50 Years!
In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.
Rich and Fran Armstrong celebrated their 50th anniversary on Oct. 10th. They met at the Lancaster A/G Church in the late 1960’s. Rich worked at ALCOA for 25 years before the local plant closed. He then found his true calling and became the Director of Ministries at The Worship Center and a member of the Leola Ministerium. Rich spear-headed the creation of CVCCS, a local food-bank for the homeless in the CV area. Fran served as Director of Women’s Ministries at TWC for several years. Rich and Fran have taught the word of God in 15 different countries to all people from all walks of life. They are dearly loved by many and have a blended family of five children: Bert, Lydia, Charles, Kim, and Rob; 18 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. R064251

If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country from violent mobs, immorality, and evil: 1. Get registered to vote. If you’re registered already, decide how you’ll vote. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you be er understand the op ons Pennsylvania offers: 717-690-1620. 2. Talk to everyone about why you are vo ng and why they should too. 3. Pray for our na on and our na on’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day a er the 2020 elec on wishing you had done more to save your community and your country. Sincerely, Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio Paid for by Amish PAC. follows Thomas Reynolds and his best friend, Daniel Russell, who was born into slavery. When Thomas learns Daniel is in danger of being sold, he and his father plan to help Daniel escape west to the Cherokee nation. “The story is totally fiction and the only thing I have ever done that directly involves slavery,” said Moore. Moore taught school for more than 40 years, and his students who were photographed for the cover art for “West to Freedom,” John Rivera as Daniel Russell and Thomas Ristine as Thomas Reynolds, are now grown. “Summer at Stewart Creek,” which is more than 100 pages, is based on campers Moore met at a camp on Cape Cod in 1979. “This book is totally unrelated to anything else I have done,” mused Moore. A model railroad enthusiast, who serves as vice president of the Short Line Club in Ephrata, Moore based the setting on the layout in his basement, using realistic-looking photos at the ends of chapters. “All (the story) is imaginary,” said Moore, “including the Virginia and Truckee Railroad of West Virginia.” “Summer” is the story of

In August, West and Yohe heard that some of their nominees were among the winners. Rahwa Teklai, who lives in Manheim Township, was nominated by Yohe and was chosen as a fundraising winner for her work as a SoleMate. Four Paradise Elementary School coaches - Falon Doutrich, Brooke Sexton, Kristen Rogers, and Val Ruhl were chosen as winners in the coaching category. Yohe reported that a SoleMate trains for an event of their choice while raising funds for GOTR. Teklai became familiar with GOTR because her daughter took part in the program and because her employer, PNC Bank, is a sponsor for GOTR. “Rahwa wanted to keep (her SoleMate status) open all year (during 2019-20) because she believes in (GOTR) and (because) she was tackling some things on her bucket list,” said Yohe. During that year, Teklai ran races that challenged her comfort zone, including some high mileage endeavors. “She ended (her year) by summitting Mount Kilimanjaro,” said Yohe, who noted that Teklai’s background is “incredible.” Born in Eritrea in East Africa in 1984, she and her mother and older sister fled to Sudan, walking more than 500 miles to avoid capture. “We teach our girls to be the authors of their own stories,” said Yohe. “(Teklai) really represents what we’re teaching our girls through our curriculum and that there are no limitations on what they can do, only opportunities to be remarkable.” When Yohe gave Teklai the news of her award, she responded in an email, saying, “I truly believe that all our girls can be as confident as we are if not more.” West nominated the four

She added that 16 virtual lessons that flow seamlessly with in-person lessons have been added in case of inclement weather. “(The girls) can transition to a virtual lesson for that one time,” she said. Paradise Elementary School coaches after seeing how the group members, who have been working together for years, responded to the spring COVID-19 shutdown, which occurred the same week they were to hold their first GOTR lesson. “They held a coach convoy,” said West, who noted that the women dressed in tutus and crowns and drove in tandem stopping at each girl’s house. “They would jump out of the cars, sprinkle glitter in her front yard, do an energy cheer, celebrate (that girl),” said West. “The (girls’) families came out to clap and take pictures.” West was impressed with the creativity and dedication to making personal connections with the girls. “They were spreading joy and happiness to GOTR participants,” she said, adding that the girls and their families responded with excitement and appreciation. A little sister of one of the girls came out of the house and rolled in the glitter, which gave all involved a chuckle. “It was a way for them to connect with the girls and hold up morale and keep it going.” Presently, the four coaches are meeting weekly with two teams, a total of 17 girls, at the Paradise Park because they cannot meet at the school. CV Field Hockey Tops Warwick, Cedar Crest BY LEAH SINTIC
GIRLS’ SOCCER A win, a draw, and plenty of overtime marked last week for the Lady Bucks soccer squad. On Tuesday, the team hosted Penn Manor, and despite double overtime, the goal lines remained unbroken, and the night ended at a 0-0 stalemate. Alyson Riggle (two saves) and Riley Houck (three saves) split time guarding the CV goal. Welcoming Warwick the previous Saturday, the Lady Bucks picked up their second win of the season in a home field, 2-1, overtime decision. Ana Weiss, assisted by Taylor Horst, put CV ahead in the second half, but just before regulation expired, the Warriors tucked in the tying goal propelling the game into OT. Sophomore, Leah Buch came up big for the Buckskins four minutes into the extension, notching the golden goal, her first of the season, assisted by Weiss. Again, Riggle (four saves) and Houck (one save) combined efforts to safeguard the net. “I am pleased with our positive response to being off for a week and being able to put together two strong performances,” reflected head coach Keith Nagley. “Hopefully we will continue to improve as the season progresses.” BOYS’ SOCCER CV soccer may have gotten a late start to their season, but they continue to make up for lost time registering their third straight victory last Tuesday, a 41 result over Penn Manor. Three goals in the first half, compliments of Richard Valverde-Gomez (two goals) and Ashton Herr (1g, 1a), put the Bucks at a strong advantage entering the latter half. Tarius Jackson connected for CV ’s fourth goal, and Sawyer Shertzer and Owen Linder each supplied an assist. Keeper Luke Snader kept things calm on the other end of the field and gathered six saves. The previous Saturday, Oct. 3, CV dealt the Warriors of Warwick a 1-0 loss. This time it was Andrew Wahba who netted the Buckskin goal just 14 minutes into the contest, assisted by Linder, and Snader secured eight saves to preserve the shutout. Field hockey had a successful week on the road, taking trips to Warwick and Cedar Crest last week and registering the first two wins of their season. Wednesday, the team headed to Cedar Crest and a cohesive effort from the entire Buckskin squad awarded them a resounding, 9-1, victory. CV’s nine goals were scored by Abby Morley and Ellie Livingson, both with hat tricks, Olivia Hess (2) and Ellie Hershey (1). “Our speed on our forward line and connecting well all over the field with stick to stick passing helped us be so successful with scoring,” pointed out head coach Kelly Dearolf. More Than 8,000 Served When Arch Street Center, 629 N. Market St., Lancaster, closed its doors on March 13, just prior to the COVID-19 state shutdown, administrators only expected to be closed for a few days while the floors were polished. On March 18, the organization, which is a membership-based day program for adults living with serious mental illness, reopened with the sole goal of providing lunches to members. “We were worried about our own members (because) they are food insecure,” said Susan Lilly, executive director at Arch Street. “What (were) they going to do when community meals were shut down?” Initially, the center only planned to serve members, and the first week, between 30 and 40 lunches were served per day. “Then we started getting calls from other providers asking if they can send folks our way,” said Lilly. The center now hands out an average of 75 lunches daily Mondays through Fridays from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. using a touchless system. Lunches are placed on a table in the parking lot behind the center, and recipients wearing masks pick them up. A hand sanitizer table is nearby. “We try to make it as safe as possible,” said Susanne Materia, director of development. As of September, Arch Street had served more than 8,000 lunches. Serving meals has been a small part of what Arch Street does since the center first opened in the basement of St. John Lutheran on Orange Street in 1983. Because the center’s entrance faced Arch Street, it became known as Arch Street Center. Materia reported that the initial vision for the center was conceived by a number of women who were caseworkers and families of patients. Materia noted that at the time of the founding mental health recovery involved a number of meetings and doctor appointments. “The founding mothers were very forward thinking, saying (patients) need to have a place to go between (those appointments) to gather, hang out, and have recreation,” Materia explained. Originally, the center was open from 3 to 8 p.m. and served sandwiches and slow cooker meals. Prior to 2014, with the center outgrowing the dark basement, the administrators and the board began actively looking for a place Arch Street could
hands upon entering. Arch Street’s membership model is based on a referral and a primary mental health diagnosis. A nominal membership fee is charged. With membership, all meals are free. Currently, the center is in need of food for lunches, including pasta, rice, tofu,
chicken, ground beef, cheese, sour cream, whole milk, tomato sauce, spaghetti sauce, condensed soups, and prepackaged desserts. Reclosable sandwich and snack bags are also needed. For more information about Arch Street Center, readers may call 717-392-8536 or visit www.archstreetcenter.org.

call its own. The building on Market Street was purchased, and then a capital campaign was begun. “This building has been phenomenal,” said Materia. While the center was shut down this year, the staff went to work painting and adding the new logo to the walls. The reception area opens into a comfortable, brightly colored living room. There is type of atrium in the center of the building where Materia plans to hang member artwork. There is also a computer lab, a laundry, a locker room, a shower, and a game room. Since the county went to the green stage, the center has been open to a limited number of members from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. “Social isolation goes against the very fiber of what we are about,” said Lilly, who added that members must be screened and wash their

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in the U.S. invites its supporters and the public to join a livestreamed celebration of its 100 years of ministry on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 6:50 p.m. Celebration 2020: MCC at 100 will include videos, storytelling, music, and a message from longtime MCC leader and pastor Leonard Dow of Philadelphia. The celebration also will include stories of MCC’s history told by storyteller Ken Sensenig, who is assistant director of MCC East Coast. Marcella Hostetler of Lancaster, who taught music in schools and directed music in churches for 30 years, is coordinating musical performances for the event in cooperation with a variety of musicians. This event replaces an inperson, multi-day celebration that was originally scheduled for June in Lancaster County. That event was postponed due to the pandemic and is now a livestreamed service

only. Participants can join the celebration at www.mcc.org/ celebration-2020. Video recordings of the event, subtitled in English and Spanish, will be posted at the same link a few days after the event. As the keynote speaker, Dow will reflect on the challenges MCC has experienced over the past 100 years and the strengths God developed in the organization as a result. With inspiration from Scripture, he will encourage MCC to use its best self to step boldly into the next century of ministry. Dow is a former MCC staff member and board leader. MCC began in 1920 when groups of Mennonites and Mennonite Brethren formed a committee to provide food and other assistance to people affected by war and famine in southern Russia which is present-day Ukraine. Today, MCC provides humanitarian relief, encourages sustainable development, and strengthens peacebuilding initiatives in more than 50 countries. To coincide with the celebration, MCC is inviting congregations to receive a special offering to support MCC’s ministry. Congregations are welcome to plan offerings at their convenience. More details are available at www.mcc.org/centennial /offering. To learn more and sign up for a calendar reminder, readers may visit mcc.org/celebration-2020.
Bench Mark from pg 10 working there gives him a chance to give back. “When I was a student, it was an outlet with positive role models,” he said. “I learned how to work out and how to use working out as a way to blow off steam.” Bench Mark has planned an unusual fundraiser for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 24 and 25. The event will combine a 5K race with bench press reps or pushups. The 5K and pushups may be done virtually. The bench press will be held at Bench Mark, 341 E. Liberty St., Lancaster. Bench Mark is currently open from 3 to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. More information about the program and the fundraiser may be found at www.benchmarkprogram.org.

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) runs in families. Bill Blees, 56, of Manheim Township inherited it from his father, who died at age 60. Three of Bill’s half-siblings have the disease, and his children are at risk of having it as well. As the name implies, in PKD, the two bean-shaped organs that filter the blood and pass waste as urine are riddled with cysts. Inside and outside, Bill’s kidneys have developed growths the size of grapes. Each kidney is the size of a football. They should only be the size of his fist. “He’s in a lot of pain. His kidneys are pushing on the other organs, said Bill’s wife, Diane. “He can’t hold his grandchildren or play with them like he wants to. Bill has worked for Yellow Freight for several decades. Because he is a truck driver, he is unable to take pain medication stronger than acetaminophen. More concerning than the pain, though, is the loss of renal
function. Bill’s kidneys are functioning at only 15%, which means he is a candidate for dialysis. Unfortunately, as soon as Bill begins dialysis, he will be unable to work. The other option is a kidney transplant. Diane noted that transplant recipients are not allowed to be added to the transplant list until their kidney function drops to 20%. The rationale is that kidneys are expected to last 10 years, so delaying a transplant may give an individual more time before another solution is needed. Bill could wait five to eight years before organs from a deceased donor become available. However, the transplant of a kidney from a living donor could happen in just three months. Because she does not have Bill’s O+ blood type, Diane had hoped to participate in a paired donation, through which she would donate to another recipient and then another donor would provide a kidney to Bill. However, she experienced a serious illness five years ago that now
