Gabriel Whitman, director of the Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) drama club, has always wanted to produce “Peter Pan,” but when he read “Peter and the Starcatcher” by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson with his nephew, he decided he first wanted to stage the story of how Peter Pan became Peter Pan. CVHS will present “Peter and the Starcatcher” at the school, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19 and 20, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. A special free presentation will be given on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 6 p.m. for Conestoga Valleyarea senior citizens who present gold cards. For Jeremy Leaman, founder and director of Ten Million for Christ, who grew up on a farm south of Strasburg, the invitation to lead a Youth Evangelism Service (YES) team to Romania as part of Eastern Mennonite Missions became a life-changing opportunity. “From the spring of 1993 to the summer of 1994, (our team) worked with churches there,” said Jeremy, whose team started a Christian student movement and a church during the 15-month outreach. “I fell in love with the people, the culture, the language, the food, and the beauty of the countryside.” In the fall of 2000, Jeremy returned to Romania, and he fell in love again. Eastern Europe,” said Jeremy, who launched the organization in 2017 with help from friends in Lancaster County. The Leamans moved to Florida to take part in a discipleship training school with Youth With a Mission and completed an outreach in Romania with their four children. The organization is overseen by a sixmember board, with Keith Yoder from Teaching the Word in Leola serving as chair. Jeremy noted that the ministry hopes to form partnerships with local churches in Romania and Eastern Europe and work with them toward impacting communities for Christ. “Our uniqueness is that one of our goals is to place coaches, consultants, and chaplains into businesses to build a platform to share the Gospel,” Jeremy explained. “We hope to have an influence among business leaders and those who are (still new) to the job and trying to figure out their place.” Through this strategy, Jeremy hopes to create jobs for business coaches. Over the summer, the Leamans and their children spent nearly three weeks in Romania serving in Cluj-Napoca. “We are hoping to form a collaboration with a church in that area to impact (ClujNapoca) for Christ,” said Jeremy. “That is our big goal for the end of the year.” The idea for a flag football fundraiser grew out of Jeremy’s love of holding

“That’s when I fell in love with my wife, Gabriella,” explained Jeremy, noting that Gabriella is from Galati. The couple married in 2001 and returned to the United States to raise their children, but in the last few years, the Leamans felt God nudging them to return to Romania. “We want to impact Romania now,” said Jeremy. “(Beginning Ten Million for Christ) will allow us to go back to Romania with a focus of bringing people to Christ. Our vision is to see ten million new believers come to faith in Romania and throughout Eastern Europe.” With that goal in mind, the Leamans are working with their team to organize a flag football tournament and chicken barbecue to be held at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. The event will kick off at 8:30 a.m., and the first game will start at 9 a.m. The play will be six-on-six flag football, and players must be 16 and older to register. The top three teams will receive prizes, and all players will receive a T-shirt and lunch. Players are invited to bring their families to enjoy the game. Both chicken barbecue meals and chicken only will be available for purchase. Since late 2016, the Leamans have been working to build the foundation of their organization. “Ten Million for Christ was birthed from (our) passion for Romania and
get-togethers. “This is the biggest party I will probably ever throw,” he said. “I love sports, and I love good competition.” He recalled playing touch football on his family farm during high school and college. “We would mow out a field two-thirds of the size of a football field,” he recalled. Readers who would like more information about the event or to register a team may visit www.tenmillionforchrist.org. Teams must be registered by Friday, Oct. 19.

CVHS Play from pg 1 Peter, played by Chris Needham, and the Starcatcher, Molly, played by Lindsey Mousch. Molly’s father, Lord Aster, played by Joe Weder, has been assigned to oversee the passage of two trunks. One trunk holds special cargo, and the other is a decoy. Aboard two ships, the three characters encounter treachery, shipwreck, and Black Stache, played by Jared Martin. Audience members will recognize Black Stache as a younger, two-handed version of the dreaded Captain Hook in “Peter Pan. Prentiss will be played by John Oechslin, and Ted will be played by Chris Miller. Raquel Lam serves as assistant director. Introducing new material to students
can be daunting to a director, but some of the more than 25 cast members had heard of the show and some had read the book. When Whitman explained that the play is the back story for Peter Pan to the cast members who were not familiar with the tale, all the students were on board. The story also develops the relationship between Peter and Black Stache. “Captain Hook (Black Stache) was itching for someone he could play hero and villain with, and by the end of the show, he finds that person in Peter, said Whitman, who added that it is Stache who gives the orphan Peter his name. One challenge of staging the show is

Throughout the reception, attendees may experience a virtual reality tour of Horizon’s micro communities in Kenya. Another challenge is the number of scenes that require the students to perform acrobatic tricks on stage. Of course, the acrobatics contribute to the laughs the show should garner from audience members. “The show is very funny, Whitman noted. “There’s a lot of slapstick humor. All that humor is delivered with an undertone of Peter exploring the mystery

than that, but it has been off and on. The bazaar will definitely be on this year. The event will be held indoors at the church on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Approximately 10 vendors will sell handcrafted items in the areas of sewing, woodworking, beading, allergen-free soaps and fragrances, and more. Items made from alpaca fiber will be available, and opportunities to win a hand-appliqued leaf quilt in autumn colors and a handwoven shawl will be available. A hot dog and beverage meal deal will be offered during the bazaar. Baked goods will be available as well. Apple dumplings may be purchased frozen for takeout or heated for eating on-site. Church members made 446 dumplings with Cortland apples on Sept. 22, and another work day was set for Oct. 6 to make even more. “They are very good, Patterson commented, adding, “(The bazaar) keeps our women’s group going for the year. Proceeds from the bazaar will be used by the women’s group to contribute to local organizations like Christ’s Home, Clare House, and the Lampeter-Strasburg Santa’s Helper project, as well as families in need, disaster relief, meals for funerals held at the church, and special events. The quilters group will also receive a portion of the proceeds to buy fabric, batting, and other supplies. Later this season, the group plans to send 101 quilts to the Lutheran World Relief warehouse in Baltimore to be distributed around the world. The GOAL Project, 313 Liberty St., Lancaster, will offer “Building Readiness,” the first program in a three-part series on creating a sustainable addiction prevention and recovery ministry, on Saturday, Oct. 27, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster. The GOAL Project wants to help local faith communities build sustainable teams that prevent substance abuse and support to those in recovery through its Face Addiction With Intervention and Training for Healing (F.A.I.T.H.) Initiatives program. The program is delivered by Drew Brooks of Faith Partners, a nationally recognized organization that has trained hundreds of congregational teams from 22 different faith traditions in 29 states. The program’s evidence-based model is based on a three-phase process. The first phase, “Building Readiness,” is a six-hour leadership workshop where clergy, ministry leaders, and key stakeholders from various faith backgrounds gather to explore their organizations’ beliefs, ideas, and attitudes toward addiction and substance use. The workshop focuses on the role of the faith community in awareness, education, and recovery support, as well as tips for initiating a team ministry. The second phase, “Equipping Leadership and Developing the Team,” is a twoday workshop with the purpose of building capacity for ministry teams that include training, recovery support activities, tools, strategies, and educational handouts. The third phase, “Sustaining Local Ministries,” discusses how to sustain ministry teams to avoid burnout and provide a life-sustaining healing ministry. Teams continue to meet for further training and to share resources and connect to community services. GOAL provides continuing education and networking opportunities, along with local training and support as needed. To register for “Building Readiness,” readers may visit www.goalproject.org. The F.A.I.T.H. Initiatives program is ideal for churches and synagogues, but it is not limited to any specific belief group or tradition. All faiths are welcome. More information is available by contacting GOAL at 717824-3310 or mail@goalproject.org.

Show To Benefit Breast Cancer Awareness Efforts A one-time-only reunion of the Dave Holt Band will take place on Sunday, Oct. 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. After a 10-year absence from the Lancaster music scene, the band will reunite with a show titled “Live, Laugh, Love” to help raise money for breast cancer awareness through Diana’s Dreamers: Determined to Defeat Breast Cancer. Barry Kornhauser, assistant director of campus and community engagement at Millersville University, will be the master of ceremonies. In addition to the Dave Holt Band, the show will also feature two other musical artists. Liz Fulmer will reprise her original song “Fighter” that debuted three years ago, and high school student Kylie Dagit will present an original dance to the song. Dr. Neal Harnly and musical friends Dr. Peter Kenote, a member of the New York Philharmonic; Sara Male; James Armstrong; and Michael Vitale will present Claude Bolling’s “Jazz Suite.” A fundraising reception hosted by Johnny Roberts of a local restaurant chain will follow the performance and will feature a musical group. The event and reception are fundraisers for Diana’s Dreamers: Determined to Defeat Breast Cancer. The endowment is based through the Millersville University Foundation and promotes breast cancer awareness among college-age students. On Oct. 21, 2007, Diana Denenberg Durand died after an 18-year battle against breast cancer. During her battle, the cancer went into remission and reoccurred in other body parts, including Durand’s bones and brain. Durand was a 1967 graduate of Millersville University. Eby Wins L-L League Flight 3 Championship highlight for the Lady Bucks volleyball squad as they registered their second win over JP McCaskey last Tuesday. The visitors came out strong, and McCaskey claimed the first two sets, making it a come-from-behind thriller for the CV home crowd to watch the Buckskins rally and take the contest 32 (25-27, 20-25, 25-21, 25-13, 15-7). Turning the contest around after McCaskey’s dominate two-set start took decisive mental effort. “We always try emphasizing the next point and not dwelling too much on previous plays, noted head coach Dewey Barlow. The young CV squad had to dig deep, calling on some big minutes from underclassmen in the comeback. “With a young group we tend to focus on trying not to make mistakes instead of being aggressive, explained Barlow. The methodical strategy paid off as the Lady Bucks rallied around each other to turn things around for a 25-21 third set win and ride that momentum to victory. Veteran player Savannah Byers provided a massive boost to the Buckskin cause firing over 11 kills, 8 aces, and giving an equally impressive defensive effort with 27 digs. Lexi McEvoy also helped turn the tide with three momentum-shifting blocks, making her a formidable force at the net. “We’ve had to bring some JV players up to Varsity and several made nice contributions, praised Barlow. One of those young standouts was freshman, Jenna Sweitzer, who stepped in and supplied 23 setter assists. “Jess Teleguz and Julia Strohm came off the bench to give us a nice spark in the fourth and fifth sets, and Savannah Byers has been a workhorse all year, credited Barlow. The win over McCaskey came on the heels of Monday night’s loss to Northern Lebanon, 3-1 (25-14, 25-16, 17-25, 25-20). The third set was again a strength for the Lady Bucks, rallying for a win led by Byers’ 8 kills and 15 digs, but Lebanon put a stop to the Buckskin surge in the fourth to end the contest. Thursday evening, the Bucks experienced a 3-2 loss to Cedar Crest, a back-and-forth battle that extended to a determining fifth set that went in favor of the Falcons (25-19, 26-28, 2514, 23-25, 15-6). Byers continued to be a threat, serving up five aces and 19 digs.

(6-2, 6-3). In doubles action, Sophia Steed and Hannah Kapchinske made it to the title match and were the runner ups to the Flight Three champions from Lampeter-Strasburg. “Doubles was really close and we had the lead most of the time early, noted Gregg. “We did tie it up toward the end by holding our serve, and we
made some great progress throughout the tournament. Eby paired with Catherine Scala for Flight One doubles, but the pair was bumped out just short of the semifinal round by Township duo, Scotland Reynolds and Nicole Honrade. CV junior, Rachel Eby, was crowned the champion of Flight Three singles in the LL League Flight Tournament which concluded last Monday at Conestoga Valley. Eby overcame her final competitor, Olivia Hitz of Cedar Crest, in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) to take the flight title. “The final was two girls striking the ball clean and hard, explained head coach Dale Gregg. “Rachel was able to control most of that match by out-rallying her opponent. Prior to the championship game, Eby edged out Adalie Clemmer of Pequea Valley in a much tighter semifinal battle, 5-7, 6-1, 10-4, coming back after dropping the first set to Clemmer. “In the semifinals on Saturday, she was competing against a girl that just hit every ball back, described head coach Dale Gregg. “We made some adjustments to turn the match into a physical endurance contest while giving ourselves more margin of error. The adjustments paid off and Eby took the remaining two sets handily earning her way to the finals. Jaquelyn McBride, playing in Flight Two, also advanced all the way to the final round before succumbing to Nicole Honrade of Manheim Township
hard-earned 1-0 victory over Hempfield on Wednesday showed that they have plenty of fight left in them. The high-scoring, one-goal loss marked the beginning of last week, with the Buckskins falling 4-3 to Penn Manor at home on Monday. Krasinski knocked in all three of CV’s goals, assisted by three separate players Tanner Shertzer, Andrew Wahba, and Nick Denlinger. “We needed to find a way to recover and refocus on finishing strong, explained head coach Dave Hartlaub. “We reminded each other of our qualities and rehearsed our roles. Wednesday’s showdown on CV’s home field displayed two strong competitors trading possessions and leaving every ounce of energy on the field. The Knights did not go down easily, outshooting the Bucks 5-2, and working their way into six corner kick opportunities, but CV’s defense held fast with keeper Corey Spots gathering five saves to preserve the shutout. “Hempfield lead in almost every category, they are truly a very good team, credited Hartlaub. Though a strong Hempfield defensive line held the Bucks to few Photo by Bob Diller Jenna Sweitzer makes a set for the Buck- opportunities, it only took skins during their 3-2 Section Two win one successful conversion to seal the outcome. last Tuesday at McCaskey.
McEvoy had four blocks, Sol Maldanado supplied nine kills, and Sweitzer dished 25 assists. BOYS’ SOCCER It’s the point of the season when the teams in the middle of Section standings are jostling for position, hoping to earn a playoff berth on the brink of both league and district postseason play. CV boys’ soccer is in that exact position, hovering in the middle of Section One, making Monday’s fall to Penn Manor even more painful, but don’t count them out yet. A
PENNYSAVER CV’s Ryan Lapp delivered a cross into the center of Hempfield’s box, finding Krasinski who did what he does best-redirected the ball out of reach for the Hempfield keeper and into the netting. Knowing they finished strong and gave it all they had will have to hold the Buckskins over as they wait for remaining league games to play out and determine their post-season standings. GIRLS’ SOCCER The CV girls’ soccer club tacked two
more Section One victories onto their record last week, taking down Penn Manor and Hempfield to finish their regular season schedule with an overall record of 10-3-3. Not many teams have handed CV a loss this season and the only team to beat them in Section One was Hempfield in an earlier season match, but last week CV flipped the script and took down the Black Knights 4-0. “We changed our formation slightly to put more pressure on their defense,” explained head coach Keith

Nagley. The adjustments worked, and Madison Delgado opened scoring with a goal 17 minutes into the contest. Adrianna Neiman and Leah Amico each notched a second half goal and a Hempfield own goal gave the Lady Bucks three second-half tallies on the scoreboard. “We used all of our players during the game to keep fresh players on the field,” elaborated Nagley. With their spot secure in both league and district playoffs, there is still plenty more CV girls soccer to come. CROSS COUNTRY The Lady Bucks ran their final regular season meet last week, collectively falling behind Section One leader Elizabethtown but overcoming Cedar Crest last Tuesday. Alex Slingluff once again set the Photo by Thom Swarr pace for the CV harriers, her time of The Buckskins’ Christian Figueroa tackles Manheim Central wide 20:43 was good enough for an overall receiver Colby Wagner during last Friday’s Section Two game at fifth place finish. Conestoga Valley. “Alex had her toughest competition
of the year. She ran a good, solid race leading up to the League Meet,” commented head coach Mark Amway. “She is one of the most consistent runners in the league.” Kylynn Frankford and Lauryn Hall took seventh and eighth place finishes with respective times of 21:27 and 21:32. Annika Bredeman (11th), Emily Castronova (12th), Brittany Johns (13th), and Kate Kmieczak (15th) all crossed in the top 15 to help secure the team win over Cedar Crest. For the boys, the team suffered a double setback, but individual highlights could still be found. Nate Grucelski cruised his way to a firstplace finish, topping all competitors with a run time of 16:55. “Nate ran well and beat the guys he needed to from both teams,” credited Amway. Emmanuel Gitonga was the next CV runner to cross the finish, taking eighth place with a time of 17:46. Injury has plagued several

members of the squad, an issue they hope to have resolved heading into post-season contests. Attempting to strike a balance between healing and training, Coach Amway hopes to prepare his team to be at their best for this weeks’ league meet. “We will start to do some shorter, quicker workouts and continue a good balance of mileage,” elaborated Amway, optimistic about his teams’ potential. “That will be depended upon everyone being healthy and running well,” he added. FIELD HOCKEY It was two steps back for the Lady Buckskins field hockey club last week, as they dig to find ways to grow after falling 2-1 to Cedar Crest followed by a 5-0 loss to Penn Manor. In Tuesday’s slip to Cedar Crest, the contest appeared to be headed towards overtime, but just before regulation expired a successful stroke from the Falcons awarded them the victory. Cedar Crest acquired the lead with
an early goal, but CV’s Carly Eberly tied things up with a shot to the backboard four minutes later. Despite battling to the end, CV came up short after the Falcons well-timed final goal. FOOTBALL Hosting Manheim Central set the Bucks back last Friday night, 48-7. The undefeated Barons jumped ahead early with a two touchdown first quarter, and continued their offensive blitz deep into the third, earning seven trips to the end zone. Waging an uphill battle, the Bucks worked their way down the field in a second quarter possession, and quarterback Bradly Stoltzfus found Parker Graff for a 10-yard pass to convert CV’s lone TD of the contest. Buckskin kicker, Joe Cardina, put the ball between the uprights for the PAT. The loss is only the third for the Buckskins this season, and they hope to improve their 5-3 record this week with a trip to Warwick.

“Dining With Diabetes” Classes Set Penn State Extension will offer “Dining With Diabetes: A Program for Adults With Diabetes and Their Families,” a research-based, interactive, informative, and low-cost series of research classes on diabetes. The series will be held on Thursdays, Nov. 1, 8, 15, and 29, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Lancaster Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The fifth class, a follow-up class, will be held on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019. The program is designed to
teach people with prediabetes or Type 2 diabetes how to manage their condition. The set of five classes is offered in a social and interactive setting. Each participant will receive a blood test to measure recent blood sugar levels. They will also receive a cookbook, an exercise DVD, and educational materials. Each class offers food demonstrations, mild physical activity, a lesson, and class discussion. The instructors for the course will be Stacy Reed,
nutritionist/educator for Penn State Extension, and Katie Greenawalt, certified health education specialist for Penn State Extension. For a limited time, due to grant funding, the total cost for five classes will be a nominal fee, with a higher fee for attendees who bring a family member or support person. The fee includes all educational materials, lab tests, and food tastings. Scholarships are available, based on financial need. The course is ac-
credited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE). Reservations for the class and payment must be completed by Thursday, Oct. 25. For information or to register for the Lancaster classes, readers may contact the Extension registration services at 877-345-0691.
