St. John Neumann School Opens In Lancaster BY ANN MEAD ASH
When about 90 students and more than 50 spectators gathered along with teachers and administrators outside the new St. John Neumann Catholic School (SJNCS), formerly, St. Anne School, on the morning of Sept. 8, it was with excitement for the future and reverence for the past. Faith Church Schedules Drive-Through Trunk Or Treat BY ANN MEAD ASH
“We wanted to provide an opportunity for kids to still feel something normal, since so much is abnormal, said Kristen Hershey, one of the organizers of the 2020 Trunk or Treat scheduled to be held at Faith Church, referring to COVID-19 restrictions. Hershey, along with Michelle Shertzer, Heather Leicy, and up to 30 other volunteers,
have organized the church’s annual free event in a manner that is designed to be safe without sacrificing the fun. This year’s Trunk or Treat will have a jungle theme and include about five stations offering prepackaged items such as candy, bagged popcorn, and bottled water. All the stations will be located in the church parking lot so that families can drive through and remain in their cars.

According to many travel polls, travelers are choosing small-town destinations for getaways and vacations. Not just now, because of COVID, but into the spring and summer of 2021. Fewer crowds, less traffic, unique culture, and friendly locals make visiting obscure locations more desirable than ever. As the editor of Where & When Pennsylvania, a publication of Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), I quickly learned that many of us have little idea of what’s going on in our surrounding area, let alone across the commonwealth. That’s why we’re launching a new series in our
community papers called EXPLORE Across Town, Across PA. Each month we’ll feature a town in our coverage area, as well as a destination somewhere in Pennsylvania. Along the way, we hope to show that you don’t have to travel far to find great restaurants, unique shops, amazing outdoor locations, and worldclass historical sites. Traveling locally can have a big impact on small businesses without having a big impact on your wallet. Take a train trip through the Pocono Mountains on the Historic Stourbridge Line, visit the Jimmy Stewart Museum and the iconic actor’s hometown, see the amazing architectural feats

Protect yourself and those around you. This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the u. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the u at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the u and spreading it to others by getting a u shot. And if you do catch the u, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness.

The school is a place where the body of Christ is alive and well ‌ where each person’s unique gifts are discovered and refined and where faith and virtue come alive. thanksgiving to God. The Rev. Dan Powell, executive pastor of SJNCS, then led the dedication, saying, “Today we inaugurate this school dedicated to education. He welcomed Hockley to the SJNCS family and thanked outgoing principal Suzanne Wood. He also acknowledged those in attendance who had made contributions, including representatives of Wohlsen; the Knights of Columbus; St. John Neumann 12532, which donated crucifixes for each classroom; the American Legion, which donated the classroom flags; and Charles Snyder Funeral Home, which donated the classroom clocks. To open the first day in the traditional way, Hockley asked students to come forth to lead a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. “It is fitting that today we celebrate the birthday of our school, and we also celebrate the blessed mother’s birthday, said Hockley. “St. Anne, our school’s patroness, gave birth to the blessed mother (the mother of Jesus), and today, St. Anne School brings to life St. John Neumann Catholic School. Following the prayer and the pledge, student Abby Klein played “America on the keyboard.

New principal Kyla Hockley opened the ceremony of blessing by saying, “Today we honor a new chapter - looking with hope to the future, while anchoring ourselves in the proud tradition of St. Anne School. St. Anne School, located at St. Anne Church on Liberty Street, Lancaster, was founded in 1924. Discussion surrounding the possibility of relocating had been ongoing for the past two decades. In the fall of 2018, members of St. John Neumann Parish, 601 E. Delp Road, Lancaster, launched a capital campaign for the purpose of building a new education center and renovating the church to allow for additional classrooms. On Feb. 2, 2020, a ceremonial groundbreaking for the new school was held and Wohlsen Construction began to build, following designs by Ted Vedock. On March 19, when the state mandated closing all nonessential businesses, construction stopped until May 1. A new construction schedule allowed for the school to be ready to open on Sept. 8. “This moment in history comes as a result of trust in God’s plan and God’s time, said Hockley. “And so we begin by giving our praise and

focused on our offensive movements and tried to be patient to find higher percentage shooting opportunities.” Two of those opportunities presented themselves in the first half, with CV goals scored by Nathan Heck and Andrew Wahba. The Bucks third success came just five minutes after halftime when ValverdeGomez put the Bucks up 3-0. While the Warriors managed to sneak in a goal of their own before time expired, the Buckskin defensive line limited their chances and minimized their effectiveness. “Our team has really developed a strong defense as we work hard as a unit to press teams in all areas of the field and make it hard for them to build an attack against us,” credited Hartlaub. GIRLS’ SOCCER Girls’ soccer suffered a one-two punch last week, suffering losses from Hempfield and Warwick. Boys’ soccer continues to gain momentum and last week they dealt Hempfield and Warwick losses for the second time this season. Conestoga Valley and Hempfield entered last Thursday’s showdown sporting identical 5-1 records. Eager to prove their talent on the field, the Bucks prevailed with a 3-0 win. “We have a veteran team, but they are always pushing to learn and work to get better,” commended head coach Dave Hartlaub. CV’s goals were scored by Richard Valverde-Gomez, Ashton Herr, and an own goal deflected off a Hempfield player. Sawyer Shertzer played a massive role in the attack, assisting on all three goals, and keeper Luke Snader preserved the shutout with four saves. Tuesday the club triumphed, 3-1, over Warwick. “We finished off three chances that were within eight yards of goal,” pointed out Hartlaub. “We

span creating a deficit too big for the Buckskins to overcome. On Tuesday, both CV and Warwick notched early goals and reached the half at a 2-2 stalemate, but Warwick gained the edge with the only second half goal. CV’s goals were supplied by Chloe Leaman and Megan Slingluff. Alyson Riggle (two saves) and Riley Houck (three saves) split time defending the Buckskin goal. VOLLEYBALL Three consecutive victories last week provided an immense boost to Lady Bucks’ volleyball’s overall record of 5-3. Tuesday night the squad hosted McCaskey and blanked the Tornados 3-0, (25-13, 25-15, 25-13), led in the attack by Summer Getz (13 assists) and Becca Hartranft (10 kills, 7 aces). Warwick looked like they might have the upper hand again after the opening game went 25-9 to the Warriors, but the Lady Bucks dug deep to clinch three of the next four (9-25, 25-13, 25-18, 25-27, 15-10). “We cut down considerably on the number of service errors,” Moore said, comparing it to the previous clash with the Warriors. “We have a young team that has a lot of work to do; however, they have the desire to ask questions and want to improve themselves individually and as a team.” That improvement took Warwick off guard and Getz set the stage with a game-high 21 assists, complimented by 10 kills from Hartranft. Defensively, sophomore Camdyn Mahler made her presence known, dominating the net with eight blocks. Sol Maldonado’s well-rounded game made her vital to the defensive efforts, coming up with 14 digs, as well as churning offensive

momentum delivering a trio of aces. On October 9, the squad took down Manheim Township in four games (25-19, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23). Maldanado powered 12 kills and three blocks, Hartranft served up four aces along with seven digs, and Getz supplied 19 assists. FIELD HOCKEY Last week’s wins over LampeterStrasberg and Hempfield marked six straight victories for the Lady Bucks field hockey squad. A diversified Buckskin offense fired 13 shots at Hempfield to rise to 4-1 win on Tuesday, with each goal coming from a different CV athlete. Ellie Livingston registered the only first half goal while Sydney Weaver, Elli Hershey, and Abby Morley struck in the latter half. Livingston, Hershey, and Sophia Livingston were each credited with an assist. The previous night, the team was trailing Lampeter-Strasburg 1-0, but notched two goals in the third period to pull out a 2-1, come-from

-behind triumph. Hershey and Morley netted the CV goals just six minutes apart and on the opposite end of the field, keeper Brooke Eberly collected 11 saves to hold on to the narrow lead. CROSS COUNTRY Led by frontrunner Emmanuel Gitonga, CV boys cross country raced their way to a pair of wins last Tuesday on their home course, leaving behind competitors from Warwick and Elizabethtown. Gitonga’s 18:00 race was the fastest time of the day, four seconds ahead of Elizabethtown’s runner up, Nathan Johnson. The next harrier to cross for CV was Tyler Slingluff (18:20) in fifth. Adam Harris (18:27) and Dante Velasco (18:34) finished back-to-back in seventh and eighth, and Timothy Gitonga (18:39) in tenth. “The boys have been getting stronger with each meet and have tightened our 1-5 spilt,” explained head coach Mark Amway. The Buckskin girls were unable to collect a team victory, with Warwick claiming dual wins and CV falling a slim three points shy of Elizabethtown, 27-30. Freshman, Seana Dougherty completed the course the quickest for CV, earning eighth place while clocking a time of 21:19, and a trio of CV runners, Brittney Johns (22:19), Kate Kmieczak (22:33), and Kylynn Frankford (22:37), ranked 11th, 12th, and 13th respectively. “The girls have improved each week and are a much stronger team than they were last year,” encouraged Amway. “The goal is to run well in Leagues this week.” FOOTBALL CV football encountered a 33-7 setback against Cocalico on October 9th. The Eagles ran away with the contest thanks to 353 rushing yards and five touchdowns. The Bucks continued to battle and were rewarded with a visit to the end zone in the fourth, on an 11-yard run from James Williams, followed by a successful PAT from kicker Nate Heck.

Area children and parents who attend are encouraged to dress in costume for the drive-through, which will be held at the church, 2124 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, on Friday, Oct. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to wear masks. The Trunk or Treat will be held rain or shine. Hershey explained that families that take part will remain in their cars throughout the event. When a car approaches the portico at the front of the church, there will be a jungle-themed backdrop made from balloons. “We will still do a picture of the family,” said Hershey, who said the photo will be immediately available. “(Attendees) will receive a bag for their treats and then cars will proceed through the parking lot,” Hershey explained. She added that at each station, volun-
teers dressed in costume will hand out goodies, which will include items such as coloring pages, crayons, and temporary tattoos, in addition to food items. Then, the driver will be directed to exit at the rear of the property. As in the past, the church will accept donations of
canned goods for the Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS) Food Pantry. Unexpired nonperishables, such as canned fruits, vegetables, and soups, are welcome. According to Shertzer, donations may be made at the first stop under the portico. Questions about the event? Call 717-393-5345.

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ,
Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American flags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.
In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country from violent mobs, immorality, and evil: 1. Get registered to vote. If you’re registered already, decide how you’ll vote. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you be er understand the op ons Pennsylvania offers: 717-690-1620. 2. Talk to everyone about why you are vo ng and why they should too. 3. Pray for our na on and our na on’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day a er the 2020 elec on wishing you had done more to save your community and your country. Sincerely, Anonymous Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio Paid for by Amish PAC.
