Volleyball Team Falls Short in Leagues/Districts

BY ERIC PYLES

Success in high school sports can vary from school to school, even sport to sport but for most a trip to the postseason puts that season squarely on the successful side of the ledger. Under that simple definition, the Conestoga Valley girls’ volleyball team had a successful season, posting a 12-5 overall record while qualifying for both the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs and the District 3-4A playoffs. However, it does not feel that way as the Lady ‘Bucks dropped their final two matches, bowing out of the L-L postseason in the semifinals and dropping out of the district bracket in the opening round.

Despite those struggles the entire postseason was not lost as CV opened the LL playoffs on October 19th with a 3-0 win over Lancaster Mennonite.

“It was nice for the team to make the league playoffs and to get a win,” said head coach Devin Moore, adding, “something that we hadn’t done in a while.”

Twenty-six assists from Summer Getz and 12 Becca Hartranft kills paved the way for easy wins of 25-10, 25-15 and 25-19. Emily Kornacki added 12 digs, Camdyn Mahler three blocks and Rhiannon Henry two aces to round out the victory.

The Lady Buckskins were back in action one day later, facing Elizabethtown in the L-L semifinals. CV’s L-L title hopes ended in the semifinals via a 3-0 loss to those Lady Bears.

“E-town played us hard and we hung with them for a bit but struggled once we fell behind in the third set,” noted Moore.

Getz tallied 22 assists, Hartranft collected 10 kills and Kornacki had 15 digs but it was not enough as Elizabethtown posted wins of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-10. Mahler added two blocks and Henry two aces.

Conestoga Valley’s season came to a screeching halt on October 25th in a 3-0 loss to Cumberland Valley in the opening round of the District 3-4A playoffs that Moore described as “pretty exciting and closely contested.”

The Lancaster county version of CV pushed the Dauphin county version to the limit but dropped 25-22, 29-27 and 26-24 finals to bow out of the postseason.

“The team played really hard and gave a ton of effort and fight the entire time. It was hard to see the season end, but it was one of the most complete matches that we had played,” said Moore.

Getz tallied 28 assists and two aces while both Hartranft and Kornacki finished with 19 digs. Hartranft added 12 kills while Mahler finished with 3.5 blocks

TENNIS.

Conestoga Valley saw the girl’s tennis season extend into district doubles as Jade Flores and Paula ValverdeGomez earned the four seed in the 3A draw. They opened district play on October 21st, topping Claire Tian and Alicia Xie of Hershey in three sets. Tian and Xie took the opened set 6-3 but Flores and Valverde-Gomez bounced back with wins of 6-4 and 7-5 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.

That quarterfinal match also took place on the 21st with Valverde-Gomez falling to Valeria Sanchez and Hallie Guerrero of Reading. This one also went to three sets with Valverde-Gomez slipping a 7-5 victory between the 2-6 and 1-6 losses.

BOYS’ SOCCER

The boys’ soccer team jumped into the postseason on October 25th enjoying a dramatic penalty kick victory over Cumberland Valley.

“Quite a night for the ‘Bucks,” said head coach Dave Hartlaub.

The game may have ended with drama dripping everywhere, but for the majority of the contest it appeared as if CV’s first half score would hold up. Landon Sunday fed Rowan Aisenbrey who took care of the rest for a 1-0 lead. Jacob Carr’s three saves kept the Eagles at bay for most of the contest but a late Cumberland Valley score brought overtime. CV was able to hold through the extra sessions.

“Giving a goal up late like that is a huge emotional swing, but our boys stayed strong and fought through fatigue to weather the overtime periods,” Hartlaub said.

With the game still deadlocked at 1-1 the teams set up their penalty kick order. Aisenbrey was up first and converted with Carr’s diving save putting the ‘Bucks up 10. Caden Bredeman made it two in a row but Cumberland Valley kept pace this time. Nate Showvaker was up next, converting his kick only to see the Eagles match for a 3-2 penalty kick tally. Owen Riggle missed his attempt high but CV maintained their edge after Cumberland Valley missed their kick as well. David Irwin’s shot was stopped, leaving the door cracked but Cumberland Valley’s attempt sailed high securing the 3-2 penalty kick victory.

FOOTBALL

The weather turning a bit colder and the leaves turning colors not only signals that autumn is here, it also means that the high school football season is inching close to completion. For Conestoga Valley that meant a week nine trip to the Reading area to battle Exeter Township. That trip resulted in a 38-10 loss leaving the Buckskins 4-5 overall and 2-3 in L-L Section Two action.

CV struggled to get their offense going leading to a 429-136 total yardage hole with Exeter posting twice as many first downs, 10-5. That lack of offense left Nick Tran’s 34 yards tops in rushing and Jeff Fisher’s 80 yards top in receiving. Fisher also hauled in CV’s lone score, a 55-yard pass from Macoy Kneisley in the third that made it 24-10 heading into the final frame. The Eagles pulled away over that final stanza for the 38-10 final. David Irwin put CV on the board in the opening quarter, connecting on a 27-yard field goal.

FIELD HOCKEY

If the saying, ‘all good things come to an end’ is true in any way, then the field hockey team can count their 2022 season as good. The Lady ‘Bucks season came to a close on October 26th with a 2-1 overtime loss to Twin Valley in the opening round of the District 3-2A playoffs. Jamie Handwerger used a Sophia Livingston feed to put CV up 1-0 in the second but Twin Valley’s Hadley Munn answered later in the frame. The game remained a 1-1 deadlock until overtime when Munn struck again, this time securing the win. Elizabeth Talley finished with 13 saves in the loss.
