Back in the spring of 2019, Cavod ballet director Stephanie Morales was thinking about Christmas. “‘The Nutcracker’ is big for the holidays,” said Morales. “I love (the show), but … I thought there should be something else for the holidays.”
When Morales went to sleep one night, she dreamed of a ballet. “(In the dream) were the names of the characters, their journey, and what it would be about,” said Morales, who woke up in the morning and wrote down everything she could remember. “I put it all together and brought it to Connie (Dienner, director) at Cavod (Academy of the Arts),” recalled Morales. “Our mission (at Cavod) is to create with purpose, so we wanted to offer (a holiday ballet)

that would show that to our students.”
Dienner agreed with Morales, and the result was “Wonder,” an original ballet choreographed and directed by Morales. The show premiered at Cavod in late 2019. This year, “Wonder” will run from Friday, Nov. 13, through Sunday, Nov. 15, at Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland. The Nov. 13 show will be at 7 p.m. The Nov. 14 and 15 shows will play at 2 and 7 p.m. Audience members are encouraged to wear masks, and theater seating will be at 50% capacity to comply with COVID-19 restrictions.
“Wonder” is the story of Gracie, played by Lilly Spolum, and Nick, played by Lincoln Everett, two orphaned children who are searching for the wonder of the holiday season. They are aided in their quest by three Christmas Lights, Twinkle, played by Jada Correll; Flicker, played by Emma Myers; and Pixie, played by Audrey Pavlica. As they search for the “wonder,” the children visit the Toy Shoppe, the Christmas Tree Village, and a cathedral. Through their adventure, they learn that the wonder of the holiday season comes from love and from being loved.

Veterans Day Event Planned
The Vietnam Veterans of America and Associates Chapter 1008 of Lancaster will hold a wreath laying and ceremony on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m., rain or shine. The event will take place at the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Greenwood Cemetery on South Queen Street in Lancaster.
The public is invited to attend. Due to COVID-19 precautions, masks and social distancing will be required. For more information, readers may call Mike Kunitsky at 717-475-0498.

at the end of August. Morales said the cast of 30 will include two adults this year, who will portray Ma and Pa Winters. Ma Winters will be played by Kelly Manana, and Pa Winters will be played by David Spolum.
“This year, we are adding a sweet shop, which will be brand new,” reported Morales. “In the sweet shop we have a baker and little gingerbreads played by 5- to7-year-olds. We have hot chocolate and gumdrops and peppermints (as well).” Other scenes include a snow blizzard and a sequence with choir dancers.
“Wonder” sold out when it was introduced at Cavod in 2019. “We are creating a new tradition for Cavod and the community,” said Morales, who noted that through the show she wanted to provide New Holland with another outlet to experience the arts. “It’s been a really fun process,” she said.

CV Football Tops Mules For 3rd League Win
BY LEAH SINTIC
Buckskin football continues to gain traction, picking up their third league victory on October 23, taking down Solanco at home, 31-7.
Booper Johnson’s 51-yard touchdown run on CV’s first possession set the tone for the big Buckskin win and was the first of three TD’s Johnson delivered to the end zone.
“We needed some of our seniors and our big-time players to set up and play lights-out in a huge game, and they did,” commended head coach Gerad Novak.
Johnson kick started the second half momentum in much the same way, this time with a 64-yard run. His third trip to the end zone took place in the final quarter, a 16-yard rush, bringing him to a game-high, 205 rushing yards.
In the second quarter, the only period that didn’t hold a Johnson touchdown, CV’s Zach Fisher stepped up to receive a 22-yard TD pass from quarterback Macoy Kneisley.
Nate Heck made good on each of the three PATs and added a firstquarter, 29-yard field goal to his resume.
The Buckskin defense held Solanco to just one end zone visit, which occurred in the second quarter.
“The defense played outstanding. They gave Solanco very few running lanes, no room to run their option offense, and penetrating the offensive

line,” described Novak. “The perimeter defense remained disciplined in doing their job while trusting their teammates to do theirs.”
Hoping to extend their two-game win streak, the Bucks anticipate matchups against McCaskey, Penn Manor, and Daniel Boone as the season enters the home stretch.
“It’s great to see the kids have success on the field,” summarized Novak. “It’s an amazing feeling as a coach to see the joy on their faces after a big win.” GIRLS’ SOCCER
Lady Buck’s soccer wrapped up their season with a flourish, claiming a 2-1, overtime victory over Cedar Crest on October 23rd.
The Falcons jumped out to an early lead with a goal after just 16 minutes on the field.
After trailing 1-0 for 39 minutes of the contest, CV’s Megan Slingluff netted the equalizer and the momentum shift carried into overtime, where Amanda Yingling supplied the game winning goal on a free kick.
“That was a great game to end the season on,” celebrated head coach Keith Nagley, who will be stepping away from the helm of CV varsity girls’ soccer at the conclusion of this season.
Seven years as the head coach has made Coach Nagley a well-known figure whose leadership will be missed. Nagley’s time at Conestoga Valley included accolades such as a 2016 PSCA Coach of the Year Award in girls’ 4A soccer and leading a 2019 squad that received the United Soccer Coaches Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Platinum Award.
This year’s girls’ team has earned the USC Team Academic Award, a distinction that highlights their efforts on and off the field, in addition to a season record of 5-4-1. VOLLEYBALL
A young Buckskin volleyball team finished the season on the plus side with an overall 8-7 record and a 6-6 mark in L-L League competition.
Comprised of mostly underclassman, and backed by a JV club that went 11-4 this season, the squad has plenty of room for growth in coming years, and will only graduate one senior this season.
Giving a glimpse at future potential, Buckskin sophomore Becca Hartranft racked up some impressive stats over the course of the season to lead in three categories with 115 kills, 31 aces, and 79 digs. Fellow sophomore, Madison Williams, proved to be a force at the net, collecting 33 blocks. FIELD HOCKEY
Girl’s field hockey concluded their regular season, boasting nine wins and only four losses, outscoring their opponents by a margin of 43-10.
Keeper Brooke Eberly’s 53 saves was a huge part of that lopsided statistic, only allowing 10 goals over the course of 13 contests, and also earning three shutouts.
On offense, Abby Morley notched the most CV goals, with 13, and dished out four assists. A total of eight different Lady Bucks scored goals throughout the season.

Weagley, a resident of Atglen and a first-time author, describes the book as a memoir and statement of faith. “I was raised in a devout Catholic family and was blessed to experience a wonderful childhood. Sadly, when I was 14, my father suffered a brain aneurysm, resulting in a disability,” he said. “We were angry at God and could not understand how He could have let this happen to our family. Unfortunately, we turned away from our faith and the church community. With the help of friends, the benefit of numerous trials and tribulations and the grace of God, I managed to rediscover my faith.”
Weagley, whose background is in sports medicine, said he never expected to write a book but felt compelled to do so after retirement. “When I retired, I knew I had more time; I prayed and it came back loud and clear that is what I need to be doing,” said Weagley. “(Until recently), I thought reading and writing were a necessary evil. In the first part of the book, Weagley talks about his childhood memories in a Christian school and his church experiences, as well as his father’s injury and its impact on the family. In the second part of the book, “Reason to Believe,” Weagley, who describes himself as a very cynical person, shares scientific, historical and biblical evidence to support his belief in God.
