Together, CVHS students discover “The Importance of Being Earnest”

There are a great many lessons to be learned from live high school theater. Among the most important are the concepts of collaboration, cooperation and accountability.

Student cast members of the Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) fall play seem to recognize that teamwork does in fact make the dream work.

“One of the biggest things I stress is that we’re a family, that we work together to bring each other up and help each other out,” said

Vincent Whitman, the director of CVHS’ fall play. “I tell the students, ‘You’re there to support everyone, and we’re there for everyone as a person.’ I also remind them that all the hard work they put in has led up to the shows. I tell them to go out and put everything they have into it.”

This season’s CVHS fall play, “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde, will be presented in the CVHS auditorium, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 6 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m.; and Sunday,

Nov. 10, at 2 p.m. The Thursday show is designed to be a special presentation for senior citizens only and is free to attend.

Tickets for the 90-minute, three-act performance are available at https://cur8.com/448/ project/127000 or at the CVHS auditorium an hour before each show.

“It’s basically a farcical comedy,” said Whitman. “I’d say that about half of the cast already knew about the show and the other half didn’t. There was a mixture of feelings about it at the beginning. Now that we’re in it, (the student cast

It promotes health and growth and confidence. But Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster is also about stamina; it’s about finishing the race.

GOTR Lancaster is in the process of putting the wraps on another fall season. If participation and impact are any indications, the current season has been an overwhelming success.

CBJO to honor veterans with toe-tapping tunes

When we honor our veterans, we celebrate our freedoms. Music is a patriotic and inspiring way to connect the two.

Since honoring veterans was one of the reasons behind the forming of Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra (CBJO), then it is fitting that the band is planning a concert to be held near Veterans Day.

“When we founded the band, one of the tenets was to honor veterans and play music for

veterans,” said Joe Chestnutt, one of the founders of CBJO. “We really, truly love playing the music we play. We want to help veterans and serve veterans, and we want to bring this music to the community at large.”

On Sunday, Nov. 10 - the day before Veterans Day - at 7 p.m. at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster, CBJO will present its annual Veterans Day concert. On that evening, CBJO will also commemorate the 10th anniversary of its forming.

The patriotic 90-minute concert, which will feature a special guest appearance by the singing trio America’s Sweethearts NYC, is free to attend, and doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

“(The concert’s vibe has) always felt electric,” said Chestnutt. “We have filled that sanctuary, and there’s anticipation. Once we get playing, people clap along and that fires up the band. It stirs up memories, memories of music (the audience) loves.”

During the 10-minute intermission of the concert, a freewill offering to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project will be accepted. Last year, CBJO’s annual concert raised $2,300 for the national veterans’ service organization.

“We’re trying to raise funds for a very charitable organization,” said Chestnutt, himself a Marine Corps veteran. “I’ve just always followed Wounded Warrior Project

since I became aware of it. They’re responsible with their money.”

While the music selection that night will be focused on patriotic numbers, salutes and marches, CBJO will also perform big band jazz pieces from the 1940s to 1970s. They are familiar selections that often elicit audience participation.

“It’s classic stuff. It’s a huge variety of stuff,” said Chestnutt. “It’s great big band music. It started out as the music of the greatest generation, and now it’s the music of all generations.”

CBJO’s distinguishing sound is made up of four trumpets, five trombones, two alto saxophones, two tenor saxophones, a baritone saxophone, a guitar, a keyboard, an upright acoustic bass, a drum set and in-house vocalists. But it’s really the people who make the band - skilled, experienced performers from all over Lancaster County who enjoy playing as much

as their audiences love hearing them play.

“We just have people from all across the spectrum who love to play and who came together as Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra,” said Chestnutt. “They are all talented. Everybody has their strengths, and a lot of people in this band also participate in other community bands. There’s a community of musicians in this area to draw from.

The secret to having a good band is having a steady membership, just knowing how each other plays.”

CBJO was established from Manheim Township High School’s

Class of 1978 35th class reunion in 2013.

“It was like, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to play together again?’” said Chestnutt of that fateful reunion. “We got ourselves together and put together the band. We pulled together all these people who wanted to play.”

In December, CBJO will present its second Christmas Concert, “Swinging Christmas,” at a date and site yet to be announced. For additional information about CBJO or to hear its music, search for “Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra” on Facebook.

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.

Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.

Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country:

1. Election Day is Tuesday, November 5th. Call us to find your polling place: 717-403-7041.

2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.

3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done

save your community and your country.

Sincerely,

Common Cents concert set at Fairmount

Common Cents, a quartet originally from Montgomery County, recently reconnected and will perform a concert at Fairmount in Ephrata on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 6:30 p.m. The concert will be held in the Farm Crest Community Room at 1100 Farm Crest Drive, on the east side of the Fairmount campus. The public is invited to attend.

Common Cents started singing many years ago and recently reconnected to bring encouragement in a chaotic world. Members of the quartet are lead singer Leroy Clemmer, Merle Hunsberger and Lester and Martha Guntz.

Many songs were written by Clemmer, now living in North Carolina, who shares some childhood memories. Clemmer has suffered numerous accidents, including a near-death experience in 1984; music helped him through the tough times while in a wheelchair.

Hunsberger suffered a series of strokes; God restored him to

where he is once again able to play guitar and accordion.

Lester and Martha sang in several groups throughout the years. Together, their talents include bass, steel guitar and keyboard.

The group sings four-part harmony, with and without instruments. The music is uplifting, inspirational country-gospel music. The goal of the group is to bring glory to God, looking at life on the positive side but also enjoying clean humor.

weeks of hard work by the student performers, two hours of rehearsal, four times a week.

“One of the most important things we do is to help develop the characters,” said Whitman. “Many of the veterans are pulling the newcomers aside and bringing them up to speed. They’re saying, ‘Let’s work together and make sure we’re all ready.’ It takes all of us.”

“On that first day of the show, there are a lot of nerves,” added Whitman. “During that Thursday show (for senior citizens), it’s a smaller audience, and that gets (the student cast members) going for the next shows. By the last show, they’re so relaxed. It’s so interesting to see how the characters grow from the first show to the last show.”

“‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ is a wonderful show that everyone is bound to enjoy,” said Hannah. “This show is just as witty and humorous as it is complex and compelling. It’s a shorter show, but the plot has so many twists and turns. I am playing Gwendolen, a prim and proper lady who’s not afraid to speak her mind. That’s not my personality, so it’s been a fun journey to try and become her onstage.”

Program will celebrate Native American History Month with music and dancing

According to Circle Legacy Center’s mission statement, the nonprofit’s goal is “to represent Native America to our local businesses, organizations and educational institutions, both the enduring traditions of the past as well as their thriving and challenging contemporary culture.” Despite having no official headquarters, Circle Legacy Center strives to bridge the gap between the Native American community and the public by partnering with local organizations, attending events and offering monthly programs in downtown Lancaster.

Circle Legacy Center will host its next Second Friday program from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 8 at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, 328 W. Orange St., Lancaster. The event will feature a performance from Barry Lee of the Native American music group Spirit Wing. Lee will sing and use a water drum to play traditional music from the Eastern Woodland Tribes, and he will give a talk about what Thanksgiving Day means to Native Americans. Lee will also explain the meaning of the songs and offer interactive demonstrations of Native American dancing.

“With November being Native

American History Month, we wanted to do something festive,” said Victoria Valentine of Millersville, who founded Circle Legacy Center in 2007. “A lot of our programs can get pretty deep and upsetting when talking about Native American history, so we wanted to make this program about music, dancing and having fun.”

Circle Legacy Center’s Second Friday programs highlight a variety of topics related to Native American culture, history and challenges that Indigenous tribes face in modern times. In the past, the series has explored historical events and discussed movements such as Every Child Matters, which seeks to raise awareness of the treatment of Native American children in residential schools.

This year, Circle Legacy Center partnered with Franklin & Marshall College to assist with Reckoning with Lancaster, a project supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation that aims to shed light on Lancaster’s complex history and relationship to local Native American communities. Through the partnership, members of Circle Legacy Center such as Lee and board president MaryAnn Robins teach classes about Native American culture at Franklin & Marshall College.

In addition to its educational programs and partnerships, Circle Legacy Center frequently participates in community events held by organizations such as the Conestoga Area Historical Society, Blue Rock Heritage Center and Mennonite Life. Members of Circle Legacy Center typically attend events such as Washington Boro Heritage Day and Maize and Snitz Fest to offer demonstrations of Native American traditions and crafts.

Circle Legacy Center’s Second Friday programs will continue with an arts and crafts event in December and a movie night in January.

program for every reason imaginable,” said Jennifer West, co-founder of GOTR Lancaster. “They stick with it because it’s fun. Our program is a developmental program that focuses on the whole girl. The girls learn about who they are and how to make good choices. They learn how to be good friends and how to choose good friends.”

GOTR Lancaster will conclude its 10-week fall season on Sunday, Nov. 24, at Millersville University’s Pucillo Field, 105 Pucillo Drive, Millersville, with a session-ending 5K fun run beginning at 2:30 p.m. More than 1,400 runners are expected to attend, including most of the GOTR Lancaster participants and members of their support teams, as well as community members.

The 5K fun run is open to the public, and runners can register at www.gotrlancaster.org up to and including the day of the event.

GOTR is also seeking fun run volunteers for the event.

“It’s a day when girls, coaches and family members come out and celebrate the accomplishments of these 10 weeks,” said Jessica Wilson, GOTR Lancaster’s program and 5K fun run manager. “There are a lot of cheer groups along the course, and it just makes it a really special day for the girls. Sometimes they’re running with their coaches, and sometimes they’re running with family members. The finish line is just a magical place. It’s emotional for all of us to watch them achieve their accomplishments.”

During the fall season, which began on Sept. 16, 650 girls in grades three through eight from all over Lancaster County and parts of Lebanon County participated in the GOTR Lancaster program. The GOTR program is designed for girls in third through fifth grades, while girls in sixth through eighth grades

participate in Heart and Sole.

The 43 teams of participants, supported by more than 200 volunteer coaches, met twice a week within the boundaries of every Lancaster County public school district, at some county private schools and in the Lebanon city, Cornwall-Lebanon, Eastern Lebanon County and Annville-Cleona school districts in Lebanon County. The meetings consisted of some sort of physical activity, including running; social and emotional curriculum; and varying forms of support.

“We have girls from all walks of life who have experienced all types of things at this point of life,” said Kylie Homan, GOTR Lancaster’s program director. “For these girls, now is when they’re really trying to understand themselves and how they fit into this world. Participating in Girls on the Run gives them the foundations to build strong relationships and life skills, not just for now, but into the future. We want girls to participate in any way they’re comfortable. There is research that suggests that a combination of physical activity and emotional support is the best way to help the whole person.”

An international program, GOTR was founded in Lancaster in 2009, with two teams and 25 girls. GOTR Lancaster expanded into Lebanon County in 2017, and to date the program has been used 22,000 times by about 12,000 girls.

“We thought this was something Lancaster was ready for,” said West. “We grew quickly. We were just seeing as many girls as possible. Now, we’re going deeper and finding out where we’re not reaching. The participants are really learning how to be part of a larger community.”

Registration for GOTR’s spring 2025 season will open on Friday, Feb. 7, and the 10-week session will commence during the week of March 10.
