Staff and volunteers of Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services plan to give away specially prepared meal boxes this holiday season.

Last year, organizers of Journey to Bethlehem, an annual fundraiser for Woodcrest Retreat, changed the script a little by having participants meet up with a Roman guard on the journey. This year, a few more changes are planned. Some of those changes are related to COVID-19 restrictions, but others are designed to enhance the experience for those who attend. Journey to Bethlehem differs from other live Nativity presentations because participants are given the opportunity to become part of the Christmas story as they follow Mary and Joseph to See Woodcrest pg 7

n a year of uncertainty and change, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), located at 2420 Gehman Lane, Lancaster, is sticking to tradition with its annual food giveaway for Christmas. “Our plan for Christmas is to give away our normal food boxes,” said Gayle Smith, director of finance with CVCCS. “It has always been a pickup (event).” In the past, the food pickup also included Christmas shopping options inside the building. While those cannot occur this year due to COVID-19 restrictions, CVCCS board president Lisa Horst noted

that staff and volunteers who take food boxes to cars on Saturday, Dec. 19, will be also deliver warm greetings. “We will be giving Christmas cookies out that day, and the volunteers go out and talk to each person and wish them a wonderful holiday,” she said. Meal boxes, which will be given to families that register in advance and visit CVCCS at their appointed time, will include fresh potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, vegetables, sweet potatoes, turkey or ham, rolls, and a pie. “This time there will be milk and eggs,” added Smith.

CVCCS clients have become accustomed to a drive-through food pickup. “When COVID first hit, we went to a drive-through procedure because our clients still needed food,” explained Horst. “(Clients) would put the back of the car up, and we would put the groceries in and they would be on their way,” said Horst, who recalled that five part-time staff members handled most of those duties, but that on Wednesdays when the food truck delivered, several volunteers came in to stock shelves or go into the community to retrieve donations. “We had a pickup truck convoy

because … restaurants would call with extra food,” said Horst. Smith added that one restaurant provided 90 dozen eggs to the ministry. On the same day the boxed meals are distributed, the organization will provide about 50 individual dinners to seniors living in Nathan Village. “ We cook the turkeys, mashed potatoes, and gravy, and then we give them the rest of the fixings for them to make for Christmas,” said Horst. “(The seniors) have small ovens and limited (cooking) space.” This Christmas, CVCCS is also partnering with Victory Church. Goodman Chiropractic has opened at 3440 Rothsville Road, Ephrata, after a fire destroyed its previous New Holland location in 2019. After working with the founder of an upper cervical technique in Michigan for three years, chiropractor Dr. Steven Goodman moved to Lancaster in 1980. The project anticipates distributing over 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families throughout Lancaster County. In addition to this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, the LCPN will also continue the partnership with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas. Lancaster Catholic High School students will perform “The Tragedy of Macbeth” live for family members and online for community members.

Tracy Wagner, director of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) fall production of Shakespeare’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” had numerous reasons for choosing the classic tale of good and evil as the school’s fall play. First, because it is not copyrighted, it can be recorded and livestreamed. But perhaps just as importantly, she had a ready and willing cast. “I have a core group of students who are into Shakespeare,” she said. “They are strong actors, and we have talked about Shakespeare and how much they love Shakespeare.” Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the audience for the show will be limited to family and friends of the 22-member cast and four-member crew. “We will have (the production) professionally recorded and edited,” said Wagner, who explained that the recording will then be streamed via a link. The story of Macbeth, a Scottish general, played by Xavier LeFevre, and his wife, Lady Macbeth, played by Maddi Lewis, is one of prophecy and treachery. Macbeth is under the rule of King Duncan, played by Freddy Arnold, when he is told by three witches, played by Caroline Erb, Sheridan Riva, and Annalise Kauffman, that he will become the king of Scotland in Duncan’s place. The prediction inspires Macbeth, with encouragement from his wife, to murder Duncan and take his throne. More murder and tyranny ensue until the

mayhem is stopped by the combined forces of Scotland and England. Jacob Fertal will play Banquo, Sarah Scott will play Malcolm, and Zac Snyder will play Macduff. Stage managers are Dylan Saez and Lyla Hall. Wagner noted that she chose a tragedy because the school has performed several comedies, but she found that the play lends itself to COVID-19 restrictions, such as social distancing, and the set is minimal. The play will be set in the apocalypse of the future with gothic grunge costuming. “The language is challenging,” said Wagner, who wants to be sure the students understand what they are saying and use the correct pronunciation. She said the students are familiar with the characters because Shakespeare is part of the LCHS junior year curriculum. It is important to Wagner that the students convey their understanding to audience members. “I want audiences to feel engaged in what we’re doing and to … get a sense of the language and the story because the students are so into their characters and understand the language so well,” she said. Wagner has noticed that the students are especially grateful for the opportunity to perform. “The kids are having fun,” she said. “They seem much more appreciative of the chance to rehearse together in person, do a Shakespeare play, perform in front of a small audience, record it, and send it out,” Wagner added, noting that participants are looking forward to having family from out of town view the show via the link. “They are excited about everything in a more meaningful way,” she said.

Volunteers are needed to wrap holiday gifts at Park City Center in Lancaster during the Christmas season. Wrapping is sponsored by United Disabilities Services Foundation in support of the lives of people with physical and agerelated disabilities. Gifts are wrapped for shoppers at the former Sears Mall of Park City Center, 200 Park City Center, Lancaster, every day from Black Friday, Nov. 27, through Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec. 24. Over 500 volunteers from throughout the community are needed to staff all available shifts. A shift is typically two to four hours. Individuals and groups of people age 14 or older are invited to sign up for a variety of shifts scheduled during booth hours. The City of Lancaster will host Lancaster City for the Holidays 2020 from Saturday, Nov. 28, through Thursday, Dec. 31. The City of Lancaster’s holiday events will be adapted to prevent large gatherings. The traditional kickoff to the holidays, the mayor’s tree lighting, will be reimagined as a series of events called the Weekend Winter Wonderland on Friday, Dec. 4, and Saturday, Dec. 5. The City of Lancaster remains committed to fighting COVID-19. When out in public, residents and visitors should wear a mask or face covering, practice social distancing, and follow all safety guidelines set by each local establishment in accordance with statewide health regulations. The annual Holiday Window Decorating Contest by local merchants will run from Friday, Nov. 27, through Friday, Dec. 18. The Bank of Bird-in-Hand announced that, as of Oct. 8, it has completed the offering of approximately $20 million of its common stock. The stock offering commenced on or about Sept. 14, at $19 per share. Approximately 1,052,631 new shares were issued in the offering. “Yuletide At Wheatland” Planned LancasterHistory’s Yuletide at Wheatland will return this year in a digital format on Saturday, Nov. 28.
