Empathy fuels CoJoMotion Dance’s “A Season for Wishes”

Lititz Academy of Dance explores talents. The academy’s CoJoMotion Dance Company develops talents. “A Season for Wishes” provides an opportunity for talents to be combined for greater good.

“I hope (the student performers are) learning joy from helping others and taking their God-given talents and doing good for others,” said Lisa Kalinowski, creative director for CoJoMotion Dance Company’s “A Season for Wishes” show and owner of Lititz Academy of Dance. “I think most of us, and children, think they can’t make a difference. But when you have

so many hearts come together for good, miracles can happen. There are so many pieces, and everyone has their role. I can’t believe it’s been 20 years. That’s a lot of miracles.”

“It’s family, friendship and coming together. It’s doing God’s work in the best way possible.”

Lititz Academy of Dance’s CoJoMotion Dance Company will present its 20th annual “A Season for Wishes” performance on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 6 p.m. at Lancaster Mennonite High School’s High Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Tickets can be purchased online prior to the show by searching for “CoJoMotion Dance Company” on Facebook or at the door beginning at 5:30 p.m. on the day of the event.

Annual Veterans Day breakfast held

As they have for many years, on Nov. 11 the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) held a Veterans Day breakfast in the Veteran’s Hall of the War Memorial Building, 54 W. Main St., Leola. This year, nearly 40 veterans, spouses, and guests took part in the observance.

The event was opened by ULTWMA vice president Tim Chopp, who introduced pastor Bruce Tully of Salem Evangelical

Reformed Church, Hellers. Tully offered the opening prayer, saying, “God, we are humbled by your presence with us. We thank you for your grace and welcoming spirit as we gather to honor our veterans.” Tully went on, “We are also humbled by those with us and those not here who have set aside personal lives to honor this great country. In every branch of military service, there are men and women who gave all they had that the rest of us might be kept safe.”

The prayer was followed

Zion Lutheran event supplies healthy dose of Christmas spirit

It’s designed to be a vehicle for purchasing holiday gift items and accessories. The Holiday Bazaar and Cookie Walk at Zion Lutheran Church Leola has come to serve a secondary purpose.

The event seems to put attendees in a Christmas frame of mind just in time for the holidays.

“It brings the community together,” said pastor Karen Larson. “People love the cookie walk. Some people look forward to seeing the vendors. But people also enjoy the food and the fellowship. People look forward to this every year.”

“There’s just a general overall feeling of joy,” said church member Patty Williams, who coordinates the bazaar. “People are just enjoying themselves. Some people just

“A Season for Wishes”

All proceeds raised from the event will be donated to Make-AWish Philadelphia, Delaware and the Susquehanna Valley.

“We always say it is the most joyous kickoff to the holidays imaginable,” said Kalinowski. “It’s so celebratory. It’s family, friendship and coming together. It’s doing God’s work in the best way possible.”

The two-and-a-half-hour performance will feature a huge holiday dance extravaganza presented by 40 members of CoJoMotion Dance Company, fabulous sounds of the season, addresses from Make-A-Wish families and a separate fundraiser involving dozens of themed gift baskets.

“I love seeing our dancers and their joy and them performing for something so much bigger than themselves,” said Kalinowski. “It means so much to them. It’s beautiful to see kids have adult thinking. (The event) does so much for so many.”

The CoJoMotion Dance Company is made up of dancers in grades five through 12 from the Warwick, Manheim Township, Manheim Central, and other area school dis-

tricts, as well as Lancaster Country Day. Nearly 1,000 family members, friends, staff members and community members are expected to attend.

“(The student performers) have several performances throughout the year, but they will tell you this is the most important one,” said Kalinowski. “It’s not about them. This is for children who deserve it so much. It’s so special. As their teacher, it means the world to me that that’s their mindset. When they get to meet the Make-A-Wish families, it means so much to them. As their teacher, I’m so proud of them.”

Last year, “A Season for Wishes” raised over $50,000 for Make-AWish Philadelphia, Delaware and the Susquehanna Valley, a new alltime high. That figure pushed the total amount raised in the event’s 19 years to nearly $520,000.

“If we could (match that $50,000 amount), it would be incredible,” said Kalinowski. “The money goes toward granting wishes for kids with life-threatening conditions. We are trying to raise as much money as possible. We want to

make as many wishes come true as possible.”

Located at 620 Paxton Place, Suite 107, Lititz, the Lititz Dance Academy was established in 2001 and offers classes in ballet, jazz, tap, modern pointe, hip-hop, lyrical and children’s combo. CoJoMotion Dance Company was formed in 2004 to offer an opportunity for serious dancers to continue to enhance their skills.

“The purpose of Lititz Dance Academy is to share the gift of dance with as many children as possible, in as loving an atmosphere as possible,” said Kalinowski. “CoJoMotion Dance Company gives students the dance company experience. This is our signature event. It’s been a legacy for so many people.”

The woman resting on the sofa in a room at The Factory Ministries never expected to be homeless, but a series of occurrences beyond her control have led to her current situation. “I can come here and put my leg up and stretch out,” she said,

noting that she has lymphedema in one leg and back issues. “God provides.” Because of her unusual situation, the woman does not qualify for some area programs, but The Factory is giving her a comfortable place to relax during the day, along with other services.

“We are working with an advocate to try to navigate that.”

Although The Factory has always helped those in need of a place to get out of the cold, the organization recently became a designated warming and cooling center recognized by the Office for the Coalition to End Homelessness of Lancaster County. “The Factory has always been about coming alongside folks who are experiencing various forms of poverty, homelessness being what I would consider one of the deepest forms,” said Zimmerman,

by the playing of the national anthem. Each of the themes of the various military branches was also played, and veterans were encouraged to rise when they heard the song of the branch in which they had served. The attendees applauded for veterans as they stood to represent their branches. After recognizing the veterans, breakfast was served. Breakfast consisted of sausages, bacon, pancakes, coffee cake, fruit, and coffee. Following breakfast, Chopp introduced Rep. Keith Greiner of the 43rd District. Greiner opened by thanking ULTWMA president Bob Zook and his wife, Barb, and a team of volunteers for organizing the breakfast and then thanking those veterans who were present for the event. Greiner shared a history lesson on the founding of Veterans Day, which began as Armistice Day on Nov. 11, 1919, one year after the end of World War I. “In 1926, (Armistice Day) became a national day of observance, and in 1938, Nov.

11 became a national holiday,” Greiner told the group. He noted that in 1954, when president Dwight Eisenhower signed legislation, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor those who served in all American wars.

“I thank you all for your bravery and sacrifice to ensure that peace and democracy prevailed,” said Greiner, who also went on to detail how “American forces have always been ready to respond to conflicts and injustices and to spread freedom and democracy.” He also pointed out that “World War I led to America’s rise as a super power,” adding that American troops preserved the sovereignty of South Korea and worked to try to stop the spread of communism in Vietnam, in the end helping refugees from that country to new found freedom in America. “For years we fought for stability and democracy in the Middle East and squashed terrorist organizations that threatened the United States,” stated Greiner. “In peacetime

or in war America has always stood ready against threats to the homeland and to support its allies.”

At the end of his speech, Greiner spoke specifically to the veterans in the room. “It is through your significant contribution and the sacrifice of soldiers who have died and the work of those who stand watch today that we all know what it means to be free,” he said. “We remember the sacrifices of those who paid for freedom with

Following Greiner’s speech, Chopp made a surprise announcement, saying, “We want to honor one of our veterans who is also part of the community.” Chopp then stated that Dean Gross would be recognized for his military service and his dedication to the ULTWMA. “Dean Gross served in the Army National Guard, and he has served the community in a lot of ways,” said Chopp, listing the Lancaster Sertoma Club, Bareville Fire Company, and the Lions Club among Gross’ volunteer efforts. Chopp added that Gross is also an ULTWMA trustee. “God bless you, Dean, and thank you for your service,” said Chopp, who presented Gross with a plaque. Barb gave Gross a crocheted red, white, and blue blanket.

Gross expressed surprise at the honor. “I really appreciate this. Thank you very much,” he said.

After special veterans’ yard flags were given away as door prizes to the attending veterans, Tully closed the gathering, saying, “May the Lord keep you. May His hand be upon your works and deeds, and may He always be your guiding light.”

The breakfast concluded with the playing of taps.

Church plans open house

Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2 W. Strawberry St., Lancaster, will celebrate Advent with a First Friday open house on Friday, Dec. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. The event will include music played on the church’s historic pipe organ and chapel reed organ. In addition, attendees may join in a Christmas carol sing-along.

“If it’s warm outside, this place is cool, and if it’s cold outside, this place is warm,” said Zimmerman, who noted that The Factory’s “comfortable space” currently moves around depending on what is happening in the building. Zimmerman stated that the center is a “place where folks living in their cars can come during the day to reset charge their phones have access to a computer … conversation, and coffee in a temperature-appropriate way.” In some cases, the homeless person may be older or have a disability that makes living in a car especially uncomfortable. “Having a place to put your feet up is big,” said Zimmerman.

Zion Lutheran will hold its annual Holiday Bazaar and Cookie Walk on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola. The event is free to attend, and all proceeds from the bazaar will go to Lutheran Disaster Response and victims of hurricanes Helene and Milton.

“We try to keep it very festive and fun,” said church member Karen Adkins, who helps at the event. “We try to interact with as many people as we can and make sure everyone is having a good time. I think I get more out of it than the people who come. I just think it’s a great day for everyone.”

The Holiday Bazaar and Cookie Walk will feature about 18 outside vendors and their handmade creations like jewelry, fabric crafts, soaps and bath oils, knitted items, home décor items, paper crafts, key chains, horseradish, primitives and wood crafts.

“I think almost everyone who comes in is buying gifts,” said Williams. “They might be looking for something for their homes. They’re looking for that something special thing they can’t find in a shopping store, maybe items for people who are

cation should be made by early 2025. “We have a lot of space, but it’s about how efficiently we’re using it,” she explained. It is important to Zimmerman that the new spot not isolate visitors from the daily happenings at The Factory. “A lot of the reason folks come in is for social interaction,” she said, noting that it bothers her when the room that is available for the center removes visitors from others. She hopes to locate the designated warming and cooling space in an area where interaction with clients, visitors, and staff members is common.

Zimmerman said that many people who need shelter during the day make a stop at The Factory part of their routine. She noted that people living in their cars need to run them for warmth or air conditioning, which uses fuel. She also pointed to the safety of the building. “If during this time you need to take a little nap, you can do that,” she said. “We have always said (the homeless) were welcome in

our building during operating hours.” Operating hours are from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. “Just come in and tell the receptionist (what you need),” said Zimmerman, adding that those who need to use a computer should call ahead. “We will accommodate,” she stated.

The popular cookie walk consists of visitors filling up boxes with holiday cookies donated by 30 members of the church. The event will also offer bake sale items, a children’s area featuring makeand-take crafts and a children’s shopping area, door prizes and Christmas tunes from church music director Kurt Benit.

Food available for purchase will include breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs with or without sauerkraut, grilled cheese sandwiches, tomato soup, vegetable soup and chicken corn soup. Some of the food items will be available to take out.

Nearly 400 people are expected to attend. Last year’s Holiday Bazaar and Cookie Walk raised more than $2,000 for local charities.

Zion Lutheran hosts a handful of community events throughout the year, including a faith-based movie event before Easter and a Water Slide Day in August, as well as a free community meal at 6 p.m. on the third Friday of every month.

“All of these are for the community, and this holiday bazaar fits in with all of them,” said Larson. “Zion is kind of known for these events in the community. They’re free to the public and a service to the community. The bazaar is more than buying and gifts; it’s about community. I just enjoy meeting people and finding out who people are and where they’re from.”

Families invited to sign up for dinner giveaway

The 38th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with Giant Foods and United Way of Lancaster to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on the morning of Saturday, Dec. 21.

The holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only; there will be no pickup location.

Families must preregister for this event by Friday, Dec. 13, by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855-567-5341. Volunteers will deliver the meals.

The project anticipates distributing approximately 2,700 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families throughout Lancaster County during the holiday season.

In addition to this year’s

partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, LCPN will also continue the partnership with Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, The Factory Ministries, Mission Food Pantry, Ephrata Area Social Services, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank to provide meals to families in designated areas.

LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the rising costs of the groceries for the food boxes. The project relies on individual donations for more than twothirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. Monetary donations can be made at www.lcpn.org.

The Lancaster County Project for the Needy is a nonprofit group, relying solely on public donations and volunteers.
