The Conestoga Valley Education Foundation (CVEF) awarded nearly $38,000 in fall grants to benefit students, staff, and teachers throughout the Conestoga Valley School District. At its October meeting, the CVEF board approved more than $37,964 in grants stemming from this fall’s submission of grant requests.
The six approved grants from the 2021 fall cycle are Math Stackers and Digi-Blocks, Fritz Elementary; Transition to Independent Living, Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS); Mayfly Data Logger - Part 2, CVHS; Fitness Bars, Leola Elementary; Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Maker, Conestoga Valley Middle School (CVMS); and Fit for the Future, CVMS and CVHS.
With Math Stackers, learners discover relationships between the properties of math through stacking and comparing blocks. With DigiBlocks, learners build the concepts behind place value by using specially designed boxes to assemble boxes into blocks of 10.
The Transition Center, established in 2020, will build its capacity to provide students specific independent living skills with the installation of a washer and dryer in the PAES Lab. The lab, which already houses a full set of kitchen appliances, enables students to practice and master a more complete range of skill sets that are currently only taught through virtual means, such as videos and presentations.
To continue the Mayfly Data Logger work undertaken through a previous CVEF grant, a wireless LTE connection will be installed to allow students to obtain continuous, real-time data without having to manually retrieve and upload logger station data. The data helps students establish the effect water can have on many aspects of the watershed. Fitness bars at Leola Elementary includes a 36-pack of fitness bars ranging from 5 to 20 pounds and a rack on which to store them. Students will learn exercises and activities to stay healthy for their lifetime as well as communicate and give feedback to other students. Students will also practice responsibility through learning to use the equipment properly.
MTSS Maker (MS) includes the HP Latex 315 54-inch Print and Cut Plus Solution, printing media, and ink cartridges that will allow middle school students to design, print, and cut the school’s MTSS BUCKS behavioral system information and promotional materials. MTSS helps educators provide academic and behavioral strategies for students with various and ever-increasing needs.
Fit for the Future includes heart rate monitors that will be provided for CVVA students in grades seven to 10. These monitors will enhance the physical education program by introducing students to fitness technology and seeking to improve all aspects of their health and wellness, as well as aiming to make physical fitness a more enjoyable experience.
A second round of grants will be awarded in the spring. To learn more, visit www.conestogavalleyef.org.

Blue Ridge, VFW Support Stockings For Soldiers Program
Blue Ridge Communications closed its 12th year of partnership with Keystone Military Families (KMF) Stockings For Soldiers, in which the company raised more than $28,000 in monetary donations. These funds are slated to defray the costs of purchasing, shipping and distributing gift-filled stockings to soldiers serving in the United States military around the world.
According to Cindy Mellinger, Central Pennsylvania coordinator for KMF Stockings for Soldiers and marketing/community relations coordinator for Blue Ridge, Blue Ridge collected 8,000 pounds of stocking stuffer donations, including food, hygiene and other requested items, and received more than 32,000 personalized messages to include in the boxes, including close to 12,000 crocheted and knitted prayer squares and more than 16,000 cards. The company collected more than 4,000 colored stockings, including handsewn stockings, and more than 3,500 handmade ornaments. To assist in reaching KMF’s goal of 10,000 stockings, Blue Ridge asked the community to make monetary donations through a secure website using PayPal or a debit or credit card.
Also supporting the effort was Reinholds VFW Post 6759, which has been an avid supporter of KMF Stockings for Soldiers. The post has partnered with Blue Ridge since 2012.
Completing its 10th year of support through various fundraisers, Reinholds VFW raised more than $11,000 to offset the cost of shipping the stockings. In addition, the VFW collected boxes of items needed to fill the stockings.
Every year, the Reinholds VFW donates thousands of dollars to local ambulance companies, fire companies, various veteran programs and school programs, as well as many other community-based initiatives. The charitable acts are supported by the VFW’s regular, lifetime, auxiliary and social members.
