Leaving A Legacy - Mentor Touches The Future At Bench Mark Lancaster resident Nate Luvice is only 22 years old, but he is already concerned about the legacy he will leave. “I want to be sure that I leave my mark in this community,” said Luvice. “When people talk about me, they will say that (I) made a change.”

founder Will Kiefer speak at Phoenix Academy. Luvice noted that he specifically remembered Kiefer saying he wanted “to give back.” “That sounded strange to me,” said Luvice. “(In my experience), it (was) not usual for someone to want to help you with nothing in return.” Luvice and Kiefer began

meeting for coffee. Luvice recalled that he had no identification. “(Kiefer) helped me get my driving permit and all my identification,” Luvice stated. While Luvice appreciated the help, he was not ready to fully commit to a new perspective. “I was scared of change,” Luvice admitted. “When you’re uncomfortable, you’re growing.” Luvice noted that during that time period, he was in and out of jail, but Kiefer never gave up on him.

In 2016, Luvice made a decision. “I was shot in the stomach, and I lost four liters of blood,” said Luvice, who still carries a bullet in his lower spine. “I knew it was time to change.” Early one morning while still in the hospital, Luvice reached out to Kiefer. “I said, ‘I really need your help. Now it’s time,’” recalled Luvice. Kiefer, who was on a mission trip to Honduras, wrote back that he would visit Luvice upon his

return. “I thought he wouldn’t come. I thought I blew it,” said Luvice, “but sure enough he came to my house when I was recovering.” Since then, Luvice has turned to Kiefer without reservation. “He has been a father figure and mentor,” said Luvice, who noted the hardest part of adjusting was letting go of friends who were not supportive of the changes he was making for himself and for his two children. A little over a year ago, Kiefer offered Luvice a chance to become a mentor through a curriculum that developed into the Student Leadership Program, which helps build leaders in the community. “I started seeing that I could build a connection with kids because I look like them and I talk like them,” said Luvice. “I really enjoyed knowing I was involved (in their lives) when they would tell me they got a good grade on a test or they were helping their mom with something.” “Nate has done the full 180 degrees from where he was to where he is now,” said Kiefer. “I have never seen anyone else give up what he had to give up to get there.” Luvice agreed, noting that he has no fear of the future. “I am not afraid to move forward,” he said. “The mentors all build each other up.” Bench Mark is currently open from 3 to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. Smith, who handles finance; and volunteer coordinator Kim Sensenig. “(Staff members) put in extra hours and came in at different times (than usual),” reported Horst. “They did every job that needed to be done, and there wasn’t one person who didn’t step up and do what they could.” Using Smith as an example, Horst described how staff members pitched in where they were needed. “Gayle could do phone calls from home, and she needed to be home, so she would take care of manning the phones,” said Horst. “Everyone else did every job that came up, so if we needed to pack, we packed, but we also stocked shelves, and we cleaned.” Feeding those living or attending church in the Conestoga Valley School District was paramount for the organization. Because certain requirements were adjusted, the number of clients rose significantly. “The state removed

income guidelines for three months over the summer, so income was not a factor,” explained Smith. Horst noted that the small staff worked hard to meet the needs of area residents. “From April to June, we saw a 67% increase in new clients,” said Horst, who explained that individuals and families who had not qualified in the past now qualified because they had reduced hours or lost positions. “We saw a lot more people who needed our services,” she said. Smith noted that the CVCCS team hit the ground running, not missing a week of food service following the March 18 shutdown. “ We were right up to speed,” she said, noting that staff members called clients to explain that the food pantry would be open, but that boxes of food items would be packed for clients to pick up. She added that CVCCS has delivered to those who cannot get out because they lack transportation or are not ambulatory, which prepared the staff to work within COVID-19

restrictions. “ We kind of knew that routine,” said Smith. Another area that was both fruitful and challenging concerned the offers CVCCS received from restaurants and other entities that had food to donate. “ We needed to be flexible on pickups,” recalled Horst. “If food was available, (a donating entity) would say, ‘You can have this if you get it within the next (so many) hours.’ We had to be able to mobilize quickly.” Smith agreed. “That became part of our normal routine,” she said. “We were able to benefit from that and have nice produce and fresh foods in addition to what we usually have.” Horst lauded the team’s willingness to be flexible. “We put in a lot of hours just making sure that we had what we needed so that we were able to give out the same amount and quality of food that we were giving before.” More information about CVCCS may be found at https://cvccs.org.

The Amish Experience, a guided bus tour company in Lancaster County founded in 1959, has announced that in order to serve those visitors who are concerned about getting on a bus with strangers, it has developed a completely contactless option for the traditional 90-minute guided Amish farmland tour. A small FM radio transmitter was installed in the Amish Experience bus, so that everything the guide says into his or her hands-free microphone in the bus is broadcast over a vacant frequency on the FM dial, thus allowing customer to drive in the safety and

comfort of their own vehicles, following the bus down the scenic back roads, with the live, in-the-moment narration of the guide coming through their car’s speakers. The only thing a customer must have in their vehicle to enjoy the contactless option is an FM radio. There is a fee per car. People may make a reservation online and check in on their phone upon arrival, so no actual tickets are exchanged and the guest does not have to enter any buildings in order to take the tour. Local Author And Illustrator Bring Seaside Tale To Life Author Kim Kluxen Meredith had only met illustrator Lisa Madenspacher once before they began working together on Meredith’s latest book, “Henri’s Home,” which was published in October. “Henri’s Home” was inspired by summer vacations on the Jersey shore with Meredith’s grandchildren who prefer her made-up stories to books. “Henri the hermit crab and his family came into my head,” said Meredith, who told her friend Kathy Young the story while confessing,

“But I cannot draw.” Young suggested Madenspacher as illustrator. The author and artist met once before the pandemic arrived, and Madenspacher showed Meredith samples of her work. “We hit it off right away. I knew she would be the right person,” recalled Meredith, who requested watercolors for a story that took place at the beach. For the next several months the pair communicated online as Meredith tweaked the story. “I would send her the text from a page, and she would interpret it so beautifully,” said Meredith. “It was a godsend that we were partnered together.” “Henri’s Home” is the story of a hermit crab who lives with his family under a fishing pier. The tale sets the stage for Henri’s “growing” experience as he and his sister and parents scavenge along the shoreline, duck predator seagulls, and play together. When Henri outgrows his shell, a new one is found, but as he adjusts to his larger home, a mishap occurs that separates Henri from his pier. His adventure gives him and the reader an opportunity to meet many ocean creatures and learn how they live as Henri endeavors to find his family again. The book, which features more than 40 of Madenspacher’s drawings, was formatted by Ashley Reinhard and printed by Yurchak Printing in Landisville. DI

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many people to embrace new forms of resilience and exercise their creativity. Two Lancaster leaders, Patience Buckwalter and Krista Martin, are among those who have adapted to the changes caused by the pandemic. Buckwalter is executive director of the Grape Leaf Empowerment Center, and Martin is Eastern Mennonite Missions’ (EMM) Kingdom Team (K-Team) director. Stay-at-home orders, social distancing requirements, and capacity restrictions have reduced the ability of community services like the Grape Leaf Empowerment Center, which serves refugee and immigrant families. COVID-19 realities also altered the way the K-Team program ran this summer. K-Teams are weeklong, summer discipleship and cross-cultural experiences offered in small urban centers in the U.S., specifically for youth groups. Due to the pandemic, teams were not able to stay in the same residence, and outreach opportunities were either canceled or limited in scope. During the week of Aug. 3 to 7, Mountville Mennonite Church’s K-Team creatively partnered with Grape Leaf Empowerment Center to serve the refugee community of Lancaster. Because of limited access to resources and services, the Mountville youth group helped the Grape Leaf Empowerment Center move supplies out of James Street

Sawicki video chatted with the boys in all six schools to share his story. He explained that when he was a sophomore in high school, many people asked him about his future plans. discern one’s vocation, a person should pray. Sawicki has been a priest for 11 years. Sawicki invited deacon Aaron Lynch to join the discussion. Lynch attended public school, started focusing on his Catholic faith in seventh and eighth grades, and entered the seminary right after high school. He is in his final year of seminary. Lynch shared that his studies are important, but it is most rewarding to focus on becoming a good priest. The boys’ presentation also included video segments from some of the other 23 seminarians ages 18 to 62 in the Harrisburg Diocese. They spoke about their favorite parts of seminary and being a priest, such as celebrating Mass and being a spiritual father. The seminarians also emphasized that they have fun, including taking part in flag football and soccer games. The school students were invited to ask questions at the end of the presentation. Lallone, in her presentation to the girls, emphasized that God wants everyone to know the fullness of His love and that each person is given many different gifts and talents through which he or she can help others see God’s love for them. Lallone said that as each person grows, he or she feels a call to a particular way of life that is his or her vocation. Lallone shared her personal story and some further thoughts. She said that God always brings people back to the little “nudges” of His plan. She told the girls to pay attention to the people in their lives, to give God time and space through prayer to allow Him to reveal His plan for them, and to build a relationship with God. She added that they should be faithful to who they are and to themselves and their friends.
