Akron To Host Shoe In

Runners and hikers are invited to participate in the Lancaster Group of the Sierra Club’s 13th annual Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2023, in Lancaster County Central Park, Rockford Road, Lancaster. Participants also may bring their leashed dogs to run or walk with them. This will be the first in-person Polar Bear 5K in two years.

The 5K features numerous unique prizes and colorful ribbons. Honored will be the overall top three male and female finishers; the first-, second-, and third-place winners in numerous categories; and the first three finishers who race with their dogs. Special door and dog prizes will also be presented.

The 5K (3.1-mile) route will be the same as it was for the last inperson race, winding through the park on well-maintained trails with some hills. Participants should bring their own water bottles, and there will be a bag check. Race-day registration and check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the park’s Pavilion 22 (Kiwanis Lodge). Participants should park at 826 Eshelman Mill Road, Lancaster; a shuttle will be provided.

The registration fee will be discounted through Thursday, Jan. 5, with those who register by that date guaranteed to receive a knit beanie. A smaller discount will be available for those who register from Friday, Jan. 6, through Friday, Jan. 13. Preregistration will close on Jan. 13, but walk-ins may register on the day of the event. People registering in advance can pick up their race packets the day before the race, Saturday, Jan. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon at Lancaster County Motors Subaru, 1705 Manheim Pike, Lancaster.

Cancellation will be for severe weather only; updates will be posted at www.facebook.com/sierra clublancaster.

The Polar Bear 5K is the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group’s major fundraiser. All money raised by this event supports local efforts to ease climate change. Funds raised through the 2023 race will help finance the group’s “green project” grant program, which has awarded grants of up to $500 to 71 Lancaster County organizations over the past seven years. The money also will help support the group’s free-tothe-public outdoor activities and educational programs.

Time Management Presentation Set

Penn Square ABWA will meet virtually on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023, from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Southern Market Lancaster, 100 S. Dawn Regner Queen St., Lancaster.

The meeting will feature a presentation by Dawn Regner, principal of New Dawn Rising. Regner will share “Mastering Your Time: Creating Magic in the Moments,” focusing on time management, including looking at what matters most, goal setting, boundaries, self-love and time batching.

Akron To Host Shoe In

The community is invited to the Akron Shoe In, which will take place on Saturday, Dec. 31. The event is intended to maintain the old-fashioned, family-friendly flavor of the past. It will begin inside Oasis Church, located on the corner of Route 272 and Main Street, where parents and children can enjoy hot chocolate, games, and crafts from 7 to 9 p.m.

Starting at 9 p.m., free activities are planned for families at Akron’s Broad Street Park. Harold Stauffer and his sons will bring a tractor and hay wagon, and they will run a course for hayrides until midnight. A candy cannon is planned so children, assigned by age groups, can scramble for candy. Children will also receive neon bracelets and noise makers for ringing in the new year. A cornhole game will be available, and a firetruck from the Akron Fire Department will be on-site for firemen to oversee a bonfire.

Thanks to sponsors Weiser’s Market, Ephrata National Bank, Blue Ride Communications, and Good’s Disposal, everyone will be able to enjoy free hot dogs and hot chocolate. Ryan Myers will serve as DJ, and Joe Dunn will be the master of ceremonies.

At one time, 80% of Akron’s population worked in the shoe factories that were in business from 1901 to 1984; in keeping with this history, the main event of the Shoe In will be the lowering of a lighted six-foot purple and gold Converse sneaker. Volunteers will hand-crank it down until midnight. Mayor John McBeth will preside.

Residents are requested to donate any new or slightly used shoes. Donations can be brought to the event, or they can be dropped off at Weiser’s Market, the Akron Borough Office, or the Ephrata National Bank. Afterward, the shoes will be given to Peter’s Porch.

Darryl Witmer is the chair of the Akron Shoe In committee.
