Night To Shine Event Set At Spooky Nook By Chelsea Peifer

The Lancaster Collaboration of Night to Shine is moving into the venue where event coordinator Joell Ketchum has always dreamt of hosting the event: Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim. “It gives us a lot of space and growing room, explained Ketchum, who has planned the event for the past three years. The Lancaster Collaboration of Night to Shine is one of hundreds of events sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation and held each year on the first Friday of February to create an unforgettable prom experience for people with special needs. Night to Shine is one of several ministries led by the foundation established by Tebow, a former professional quarterback and current professional baseball outfielder and college football analyst for the SEC Network.

This year’s Lancaster Collaboration of Night to Shine will be held from 5:45 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, in Olympic Hall at Spooky Nook Sports, while hundreds of other events are hosted simultaneously by volunteers at sites around the world. People age 14 and older with special needs are invited to attend and may register at www.gbclancaster.org/night2shine by Sunday, Jan. 26. Admission is free. The Lancaster Collaboration originally hosted Night to Shine at Grace Baptist Church of Lancaster before relocating to Manheim Brethren in Christ Church last year. According to Ketchum, 270 guests attended in 2019, and organizers are projecting 370 guests for 2020. Donations are still needed to support Night to Shine. “One hundred dollars covers one guest and their buddy, plus all of the activities that we offer, Ketchum said. See Night To Shine pg 2

County residents can participate in an environmentally friendly way to dispose of their Christmas trees by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster, between dawn and dusk through Friday, Jan. 31. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. In 2000, LEAF donated funds to the Lancaster County Department of Parks

and Recreation for the creation of the nursery in memory of Moss. According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, as well as many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis after Tuesday, Jan. 7, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home. For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, residents may call the park office at 717299-8215 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County Park System, readers may visit www.lancastercountyparks.org. Guests will be greeted by friendly paparazzi - ranging from photographers to local mascots - surrounding a red carpet entrance. Formal doormen will direct attendees to a registration area where they will meet a volunteer buddy whom they will be paired with for the evening. Hair and makeup and shoe shining services will be offered, too. Following a seated formal dinner, guests will have the chance to dance, sing karaoke on stage, pose in a photo booth, play cornhole, win door prizes, get treats from the ice cream parlor and coffee station, and take limousine rides complete with sparkling cider and other goodies to add to the thrill. Upon their return to the building, guests will receive a crown and sash as their name is announced on the red carpet. All guests will receive a printed photo of themselves on the red carpet and a goodie bag of healthy snacks and other fun items donated by local businesses. A parent and caregiver respite lounge will also be provided. “The impact that it makes is tremen-

dous. Night to Shine is so special not only for the guests but for their families, too,” stated Ketchum. “Parents and caretakers get to see their child dressed up and given the royal treatment for one night. So many of the parents come up to me and the other volunteers that night in tears, thanking us for doing it.” “This is the only time that a lot of the parents will get to see their kids dressed up like this. A lot of these guests will never get to have their own wedding or go to a gala or an event that’s just for them,” continued Ketchum. “This is something showing them that we value them and God values them.” More than 550 volunteers contributed to the success of the 2019 event, and organizers are seeking volunteers to help in a number of ways for 2020. Interested individuals may learn more and sign up at www.gbclancaster.org/night2shine. Donations may also be made at that website. Readers may also contact Ketchum at 717314-7125 or j_bomb_67@yahoo.com for more information.
