Sharing His Love Of Music BY CATHY MOLITORIS

hristopher Prestia has a passion for music, and it shows. It shows in his knowledge of the subject, in his talent on multiple instruments and in his new home, which is furnished with four organs and a piano in his living room. And now, lucky for Columbia residents, Prestia is sharing that passion with others. He recently opened The Columbia School of Music on the first floor of his home, 401 Walnut St., Columbia. Prestia started playing the piano at age 6. He also plays the cello, the flute and the organ, and he sings. When he’s not teaching private lessons or getting his school off the ground, he works as the organist and choir director of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd “My vision for this school in Lancaster. But most of all, he wants to share his love of music with everyone, no matter his or her skill level. “The word ‘amateur’ is derived from the word ‘amore,’ which means ‘love,’” he stated. “That’s what music is to me. It’s joyful. Most people are looking for something that brings them joy, and that’s what I’m trying to do.” For more information on The Columbia School of Music, visit www.csmusic.school.

A Saving Grace For Young Mothers BY CATHY MOLITORIS

When Candace Abel became involved with the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) program in Lancaster, she noticed something. There were plenty of programs in place to help the children she was advocating for, but it was a different story for the young mothers. “The mother of my very first CASA child appointment was developmentally disabled and only 19 years old,” Abel recalled. “She was really in need of strong and loving

guidance, but she did not fit into any of the local programs for single moms. … I kept thinking what she needed was a reliable ally who could offer both advice and comfort to make the difference in her future life.” From that experience, Second Grace was born. The two-year program for single mothers below the age of 25 will match “Graces” - the mothers - with “Sages” - trained mentors who will advocate on the mother’s behalf. The Sage might do anything from offering advice to driving the Grace to court or child care classes, helping with budgeting or assisting with finding housing. Each Grace will have her own Sage, but the Graces will move through the program in groups of four who will attend monthly Grace Gatherings. “This will give our Grace clients the opportunity to build community with someone who can understand their challenges,” Abel explained. “Additionally, they will need a better peer support system to get and stay healthy.” See Grace pg 2

Ivy, a baby grand piano, rounds out the room. Prestia is currently looking for more pianos, and he’s also looking to expand his school, which is accepting new students. “My vision for this school is for it to truly be a part of this town,” he remarked. “I want to hear this town ringing with music. Mckonly’s Garage is proud to announce that Anthony (Tony) Olan is taking over as Service Manager, replacing Mae Carter, who left to pursue other interests. Tony has been with McKonlys for 4 years, starting as an auto technician. He was born and raised in Lancaster County and received his training at the Automotive Training Center in Exton PA. He brings years of experience and is dedicated to service. He said, “I think of every customer’s car as if it was my family’s.” In his free time Tony likes hiking, bike riding and just being outdoors. “I am excited about Tony’s new position; He brings a wealth of experience with him,” said President Kathy McKonly. Tony resides in Hempfield Township. He has two daughters, Claudia and Mia.

Teams have also formed at community sites, such as parks and churches. Coaching requires a commitment of up to three hours a week, and Sandoe noted that GOTR coaches need not be

teachers. “The majority of sites are schools, but you don’t have to be a teacher to coach,” she said. “We would love that our coaches reflect the community that we serve,” she said, adding that coaches need not even live within the district where they coach. West added that mothers, fathers, and community members can be coaches. “You don’t have to be a runner,” she said. “We welcome anybody and everybody to coach girls.” Volunteer GOTR coaches receive benefits, including guaranteeing a daughter a spot on a team and receiving a discount for her registration. Free CPR and first aid training are offered, and all coaches are trained to lead teams. “It’s a chance to be a positive role model and inspiration to the girls - a leader and someone to talk to,” said West. According to Sandoe, coaches have told her that they witness positive changes in team members. “They say, ‘I have seen how it transforms how the girls think about themselves and each other and their attitudes,’” she reported, adding that teachers have told her they believe in the impact of the pro-

gram because they see GOTR lessons lived out in their classrooms. GOTR is a youth development program that encourages confidence, character, care, connection, competence, and contributing to community. One international study found that 85% of girls in the program showed gains in those areas, along with increased long-term physical activity and critical life skills. Registration for the 2022 spring season will open Tuesday, Feb. 1, and the season will begin on Monday, March 7. The GOTR 5K presented by OAL will be held on Saturday, May 21, at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster. The fall 5K at Millersville attracted 1,000 runners, including 400 girls, running buddies, and immediate family members. “If you’re interested in learning more about coaching … we encourage (you) to reach out,” said Sandoe. Those who are interested in coaching may contact Jennifer West at jwest@gotrlancaster.org. More information about the program and the 5K may be found at www.gotrlancaster.org.

program she created after losing her first adopted child in a car accident. She’s the mother of 17 children, 13 of whom are girls. “Every time I would adopt another daughter, people would say to me, ‘You must have a girl crush,’” she said. Although Abel was inspired by another organization, Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, the idea for Second Grace is a unique one and required creation from the ground up. “The cream of the crop came forward,” she said, of Deborah Wilson Gadsden, a child welfare expert who is writing the curriculum for the Sages, and Karen Jaskot, a family and addiction therapist who has written the curriculum for the Graces. With the foundation for Second Grace set and a strong executive committee and board of directors in place, the program is ready to begin Sage mentor training. “Sages need the fortitude to go the road for two years with these women and the extraordinary, compassionate patience to stand firm and help when these women meet obstacles,” Abel said. “I am sure that when we make a good match, it will be life changing.” An information session for potential Sages is set for Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Event Barn at 1610 Landis Road, Mount Joy. PA residents scramble to get last Walking Liberty Rolls PENNSYLVANIA - Once Pennsylvania residents got wind that Pennsylvania State Restricted Bank Rolls filled with Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s were being handed over, there was a mad dash to get them. That’s because some of these U.S. Gov’t issued silver coins are already worth hundreds in collector value. “It’s like a run on the banks. The phones are ringing off the hook. That’s because everyone is trying to get them before they’re all gone,” according to officials at the National Mint and Treasury who say they can barely keep up with all the orders. In fact, they had to impose a strict limit of 4 Pennsylvania State Restricted Bank Rolls. So, if you get the chance to get your hands on these State Restricted Bank Rolls you better hurry because hundreds of Pennsylvania residents al-

ready have and you don’t want to miss out. You see, the U.S. Gov’t stopped minting these Silver Walking Liberties in 1947 and there can never be any more which makes them extremely collectible. And here’s the best part. The rolls are unsearched so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value. That’s why at just the $39 state minimum set by National Mint and Treasury it’s a deal too good to pass up. But you better hurry because these Pennsylvania State Restricted Bank Rolls are the only ones known to exist and Pennsylvania residents are grabbing them up as fast as they can. That’s because they make amazing gifts for children, grandchildren and loved ones. Just imagine the look on their face when you hand them one of the State Restricted Rolls — they’ll tell everyone they know what you did for them.

Q GOT ‘EM: Residents all across Pennsylvania who get their hands on these State Restricted Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls are definitely showing them off. That’s because they are the only ones known to exist. And here’s the best part, these Bank Rolls are loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty coins some dating back to the early 1900’s and worth up to 100 times their face value so everyone wants them.

Last State Restricted Silver Walking Liberty Bank Rolls go to Pennsylvania residents Pennsylvania residents get first dibs on last remaining Bank Rolls loaded with U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value for the next 2 days STATE DISTRIBUTION: A strict limit of 4 State Restricted Bank Rolls per PA resident has been imposed SILVER: one of the last silver coins minted for circulation

HOW TO CLAIM THE LAST STATE RESTRICTED BANK ROLLS If you are a Pennsylvania State Resident read the important information below about claiming the State Silver Bank Rolls, then call the State Toll-Free Hotline at 8:30 am: 1-800-979-3771 EXT: RWB3514

Are these Silver Walking Liberties worth more than other half dollars:

Yes. These U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties were minted in the early 1900’s and will never be minted again. That makes them extremely collectible. The vast majority of half dollars minted after 1970 have no silver content at all and these Walking Liberties were one of the last silver coins minted for circulation. That’s why many of them now command hundreds in collector value so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.

How much are State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls worth:

It’s impossible to say, but some of these U.S Gov’t issued Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s are worth up to 100 times the face value and there are 15 in each Bank Roll so you better hurry if you want to get your hands on them. Collector values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees. But we do know they are the only Pennsylvania State Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and Walking Liberties are highly collectible so anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Silver Bank Rolls should hold onto them because there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.

Why are so many Pennsylvania residents claiming them:

Because they are the only State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and everyone wants their share. Each Bank Roll contains a whopping 15 Silver Walking Liberties dating back to the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value. Best of all Pennsylvania residents are guaranteed to get them for the state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walking Liberty for the next two days.

How do I get the State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls:

Pennsylvania residents are authorized to claim up to the limit of 4 State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls by calling the State Toll Free Hotline at 1-800-979-3771 Ext. RWB3514 starting at precisely 8:30 am this morning. Everyone who does is getting the only State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Rolls known to exist. That’s a full Bank Roll containing 15 Silver Walking Liberties from the early 1900’s some worth up to 100 times their face value for just the state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury of just $39 per Silver Walking Liberty, which is just $585 for the full Bank Rolls and that’s a real steal because non state residents are not permitted to call before 5 pm tomorrow and must pay $1,770 for each Pennsylvania State Restricted Walking Liberty Silver Bank Roll if any remain.

PENNSYLVANIA - “It’s a miracle these State Restricted Bank Rolls even exist. That’s why Hotline Operators are bracing for the flood of calls,” said Laura Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Director for the National Mint and Treasury. For the next 2 days the last remaining State of Pennsylvania Restricted Bank Rolls loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties are actually being handed over to Pennsylvania residents who call the State Toll-Free Hotlines listed in today’s newspaper publication. “National Mint and Treasury recently spoke with its Chief Professional Numismatist who said ‘Very few people have ever actually saw one of these rarely seen Silver Walking Liberties issued by the U.S. Gov’t back in the early 1900’s. But to actually find them sealed away in State Restricted Bank Rolls is like finding buried treasure. So anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Bank Rolls had better hold on to them,’” Lynne said. “Now that the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Bank Rolls are being offered up we won’t be surprised if thousands of Pennsylvania residents claim the maximum limit allowed of 4 Bank Rolls per resident before they’re all gone,” said Lynne. “That’s because after the Bank Rolls were loaded with 15 rarely seen Silver Walking Liberties, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade of very good or above, the dates and mint marks of the U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars sealed away inside the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Bank Rolls have never been searched. But, we do know that some of these coins date clear back to the early 1900’s and are worth up to 100 times their face value, so there is no telling what Pennsylvania residents will find until they sort through all the coins,” Lynne went on to say. And here’s the best part. If you are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania you cover only the $39 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, that’s fifteen rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Walking Liberties worth up to 100 times their face value for just $585 which is a real steal because non state residents must pay $118 per coin which totals $1,770 if any coins remain after the 2-day deadline. The only thing Pennsylvania residents need to do is call the State Toll-Free Hotlines printed in today’s newspaper publication before the 2-day order deadline ends. “Rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued silver coins like these are highly sought after, but we’ve never seen anything like this before. According to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins many Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars are now worth $40 - $825 each in collector value,” Lynne said. “We’re guessing thousands of Pennsylvania residents will be taking the maximum limit of 4 Bank Rolls because they make such amazing gifts for any occasion for children, parents, grandparents, friends and loved ones,” Lynne continued. “We know the phones will be ringing off the hook. That’s why hundreds of Hotline Operators are standing by to answer the phones beginning at 8:30 am this morning. We’re going to do our best, but with just 2 days to answer all the calls it won’t be easy. So make sure to tell everyone to keep calling if all lines are busy. We’ll do our best to answer them all.” Lynne said. The only thing readers of today’s newspaper publication need to do is make sure they are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania and call the National Toll-Free Hotlines before the 2-day deadline ends midnight tomorrow. Lancaster And York YMCAs Merge The Lancaster Family YMCA and the YMCA of York and York County merged into a single YMCA association - the YMCA of the Roses - effective Dec. 1. The merger is intended to ensure the region has access to high-quality YMCA programming and allow the YMCAs in York and Lancaster to be more efficient stewards of the areas’ resources. On Sept. 1, 2020, the Lancaster Family YMCA and the YMCA of York and York County entered into a management agreement so that the York organization could provide CEO and human resource services to the Lancaster organization. Since then, the two associations have deepened their partnership by sharing staff, services, and programs. Both YMCAs’ leadership voted to move forward with a merger process, establishing a Merger Task Force, including representatives from each YMCA and the Pennsylvania State Alliance of YMCAs, along with the York and Lancaster YMCA president/CEO. The task force conducted due diligence in the areas of property/risk/insurance, program

and membership, governance, human resources, and finance, and it developed a formal plan of merger, which was approved by both boards and members. Members at both YMCAs will automatically become members of the new association in the same category as they were before the merger. There will be no significant changes to each YMCA’s programming or facilities, but both associations are adjusting their pricing models to establish consistency in the new association. Certain operations will be streamlined, such as timing of programs and online communications so that the merged YMCA can more efficiently serve residents in both counties. The YMCA of the Roses will keep its staffing structure largely the same. Larry M. Richardson, who has been the president/CEO of the YMCA of York and York County for over 27 years and the acting president/CEO of the Lancaster Family YMCA since September 2020, will serve as the merged YMCA’s president/CEO. In each county, a director of operations

will oversee the day-to-day activities of the branch. A single corporate office will manage both counties. The YMCA of the Roses will conduct centralized fundraising activities, but ensure that past, present, and future restricted funds are used for their intended purpose and align with the donor’s intent. The volunteer leadership for both associations will have an opportunity to continue serving with the new organization in some capacity. The YMCA of the Roses’ board of directors will be made up of volunteer leadership from both counties as will the various other committees related to overall operations of the merged YMCA. Local committees will ensure that each area’s operations are appropriate and relevant for their respective communities. Direct service volunteers, such as ones from United Way initiatives, will continue to have opportunities to serve their local YMCA. The merged YMCA of the Roses will run five branches and five pools across both counties in rural, suburban, and urban communities.

It will have a combined operating budget of about $15 million and over 500 employees, and it will serve over 30,000 members a year. YMCA of the Roses will work with over 1,500 volunteers for a combined 20,000 service hours and give out over $2 million in financial assistance so everyone can afford a YMCA membership. YMCA of the Roses will have an office for a New American Welcome Center in each county so that newcomers to the area can access YMCA resources. Its free or low-cost child development programs will serve 600 children. Summer camp in five locations across both counties, including financial assistance, will work to ensure that all the community’s children can go to camp. The organization’s leadership will continually evaluate community issues and resources so that it can implement charitable programs to meet the region’s new and emerging needs.
