The Columbia Creative Factory has begun a campaign to raise funds to purchase the building that it currently occupies at 247 Locust St., Columbia. A nonprofit organization geared toward cultivating creativity through shared arts experiences, the Columbia Creative Factory is an offshoot of the Lancaster Creative Factory and has been offering art classes and programming for children, youths, and adults since 2016. Mychal LaVia, who facilitates workshops at the Columbia Creative Factory, said that the use of the space had been donated to the organization for the past two years, but the building went up for sale in 2018. The Creative Factory team decided to begin the process of fundraising in hopes of purchasing it as a permanent location. Otherwise, the group will need to find a new location
when the building sells. According to Andrea Campbell of the Columbia Creative Factory, the cost to purchase and make a few needed upgrades to the building will be $425,000, which means that the organization must raise $275,000 by Wednesday, May 1. “We will then be able to get a mortgage for $150,000,” Campbell stated. “The income from studio rentals will cover the mortgage payments.” Thus far, the organization has obtained pledges for $55,000 toward the project. The approximately 11,000-squarefoot space currently has a first-floor gallery and a community space that is utilized for programming, as well as basement storage and two levels of upstairs studio space that can be rented out to artists. Upgrades to the building will include making the space ADA-compliant and adding new ADAcompliant restrooms. See Columbia Creative Factory pg 3
The Columbia Creative Factory, which has been operating out of the building at 247 Locust St., Columbia, since 2016, has started a campaign together with the Lancaster Creative Factory to purchase the building as its permanent space. Columbia Creative Factory is a nonprofit organization that aims to cultivate creativity by offering shared arts experiences to the community with programming for children, youths, adults, veterans, and more.

Sully, the newest UDS Foundation service dog trainee, was named in honor of the yellow Labrador that served President George H. W. Bush. Sully is in need of a sponsor to fund the completion of his twoyear training before going to work helping to provide independence to a person with a disability.
When UDS Foundation moved from its previous home in Greenfield to 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster, the space available for the service dog program more than doubled. The new facility includes a kennel with space for 12 dogs, a cuddle room for puppies, and a large training room. According to Lori Breece, UDS service dog program manager, 12 puppies per year are brought into the program, which takes several years to turn an eightweek-old ball of fluff into a dog capable of giving a person with a disability a chance for greater independence. In addition to serving individuals, many UDS dogs are being sent to schools where they provide student support. “Since we have been here (in the new See Service Dogs pg 6

and third-place winners in gender and age categories ranging from under 9 to 80 and over; and the first three finishers in any age group who race with their dogs. There will also be door prizes and dog prizes. The race will follow the same route as it did during the 2018 event, winding through the park on well-maintained trails with some hills. Participants and spectators may park at 826 Eshleman Mill Road, Lancaster, and ride the shuttle to the Kiwanis Lodge/Pavilion 22, where race-day registration and check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. New this year, anyone who has preregistered may pick up their race packets on Friday, Jan. 18, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Dick’s Sporting Goods in the Shoppes at Belmont on Fruitville Pike in Lancaster. There is a cost to register for the Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike. All money raised by this event, which is the Lancaster Group’s major fundraiser, will support local efforts to end global warming, which is considered to be one reason that polar bears and other creatures are at risk of extinction. Funds raised in the 2019 race will help finance the group’s popular “green project” grant program, which has awarded grants of up to $500 to 29
Lancaster County organizations over the past three years. The money also will help support the group’s free outdoor activities and educational programs that are designed to help people better appreciate, protect, and preserve the environment. The Sierra Club is a national organization with each state having its own chapter. The Lancaster Group, one of 10 groups that make up the Pennsylvania chapter, has approximately 1,500 members. For registration forms and more information, readers may visit http://lancaster sierraclub.org/home/polar-bear-5k -run-hike-or-walk-your-dog/ or www.lancastersierraclub.org, email sierraclubevent@gmail.com, or find the group on Facebook at www.facebook .com/sierraclublancaster. the Creative Factory has made in the community during the past two years has been exciting, and he hopes to see the positive effect continue to gain momentum going forward. “We’re really interested in creativity and what it can do for people, even as far as its healing potential,” Lehman said. “People can use creativity, so wherever we can help them to do that we’d like to bring more opportunities. We’ve got ideas (for programming and other events), but it’s really flexible and based on what the community needs.” “It’s really a community space, and we really feel like we’re here for the community,” said Lehman, adding that the team members at the Creative Factory believe they can be a part of the spark that draws more people to Columbia for all that the borough has to offer. To donate to the Columbia Creative Factory building campaign, interested individuals may visit https://columbiacre ativefactory.org/. A short film detailing the building campaign and the organization’s community efforts may also be viewed at the website, as well as information about fundraising events that are currently in the planning stages.

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) will host a presentation, “George Armstrong Custer, From Ohio to Gettysburg,” when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, at Millersville’s Municipal Center, 100 Municipal Drive. The speaker will be Bruce R. Liddic, an expert and researcher on the life and times of U.S. Army Gen. George Armstrong Custer. Liddic is the author of three books and several dozen magazine articles about Custer, the latest of which appeared in Research Review, a publication of Little Big Horn Associates Inc. Liddic’s presentation, featuring visuals on PowerPoint, will trace the life of Custer from his birth in Ohio to his education at West Point, from which he graduated last in his class, as well as his experience at Gettysburg. Custer was a cavalry commander in the American Civil War, after which he left for the West and the American Indian Wars. In 1876, while leading the 7th Cavalry Regiment at the Battle of the Little Big Horn against Native American tribes, Custer and all of his detachment were killed. A questionand-answer session will conclude the presentation. Liddic retired after spending 39 years with the Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company. A Lancaster resident for the past 15 years, he was born in Williamsport and lived in Sayre as a young man. Liddic moved with his family to Montoursville, where he graduated from high school. The Navy veteran later earned a bachelor’s degree in American history at the State University of New York and a master’s degree in business management at Salve Regina University. The talk on Jan. 12 will be open to the public free of charge, but donations will be appreciated. For more information, readers may contact Phil Gerber at 717-872-8837 or pge8507@aol.com.

Eastern York Claims Holiday Tournament Title by Eric Pyles
First year boys’ basketball coach Justin Seitz was able to celebrate a tournament win with his squad after his Golden Knights topped York Tech in the championship game of Eastern York’s Holiday Tournament. “It was a good battle test,” Seitz said of the 5344 win, adding, “you’d rather win ugly than lose pretty. We’ll take it, our guys stepped up. We did make some mistakes but we’ll learn and grow from it.” Trevor Seitz drained five long range bombs on his way to a game high 22 points which not only helped fend off the Spartans but earned the junior guard a spot on the all-tournament team. Demonte Martin joined Seitz on the all-tournament team thanks to his 11-point effort against York Tech. Martin also earned tournament MVP honors thanks largely to his 21point, 12 rebound and five assist effort in the Golden Knights 70-65 overtime win opposite ELCO in day one’s nightcap. The two sides battled throughout with neither team able to
establish any real control until the extra frame. That is where Kade Wiley picked up seven of his 16 points, guiding Eastern to a 9-4 edge in extra time and helping to secure the five-point win. Seitz collected another 13 points which was matched by senior Bryce Henise. WRESTLING As a new calendar year unfolds, the Eastern York wrestling team is looking to improve on their 2-5 start to the 2018-2019 season. From the eyes of head coach Dan Garner, a rebound from that shaky start should not be an issue for his Golden Knights. “We are a really young team,” Garner said. “Last year we had a lot of experience and seniors leading the way. This year we are a lot younger but the kids have been growing leaps and bounds with each match. I see constant improvement,” he continued. “The attitude of this team has been tremendous. They have looked at each challenge as an opportunity to get better.” The attitude that Garner mentioned was on full display in Eastern’s
first two dual meets of the season. The Golden Knights kicked things off on December 13th with a 48-30 loss to Kennard-Dale but bounced back nicely with a 57-24 shakedown of York Tech a week later. “That was a tough loss,” said Garner. “It really came down to that initial coin toss and who had choice and could set the match-ups. The coin toss didn’t go our way so all the key match-ups were dictated by them.” Of course, the Golden Knights did bounce back with that convincing 5724 victory over York Tech. “They wrestled real well in that Tech match,” said Garner. “I think the KD match woke them up a little with what expectations we had for this season and what we really wanted to do.” That type of team success did not carry over into the Golden Knights’ trip to Myerstown for the ELCO Holiday Duals on December 28th. Eastern York managed their lone win over Schuylkill Haven while absorbing losses from Palmyra, Lancaster Catholic, Susquehannock and the host Raiders to finish the day with a 1-4 team mark despite numerous individual wrestlers enjoying success. Nathan Robbins was one of those wrestlers, posting a 4-1 record that included two pinfall wins. “He looked real good in the tournament,” said Garner. “He’s just been sharp, and his practice has been tremendous. It’s just a great asset for the young kids to see someone working hard and that they can aspire to. Nathan has been wrestling well this season,” he added. “He’s had a lot of
tough match-ups and I really like that.” Robbins was the lone Golden Knight to hit four wins on the day but Garner saw five of his grapplers finish 3-2. Drake Brown and Nicolas Hess were two of those five with the pair accounting for the only two victories in a 63-6 loss to ELCO. “Hess had a tough weight class there, a lot of good heavyweights,” said Garner. “He wrestled very physical, very well, picking up some pins and wrestling hard. I’m impressed with him. He had a very good day for us.” Isaac Wherley, Justin Manganello and Nicholas Spotts rounded out the three-win club at the ELCO Duals with Garner highlighting Wherley’s work. “Wherley has come a long way. He was new to the sport last year, and this year he has picked up right where he left off, just leaps and bounds of improvement.” GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Looking for proof that there is nothing better than being home for the holidays?? Look no further than the Eastern York girls’ basketball team who captured the title to their own Rotary Club Holiday Tournament for the third straight year. The 2018 title run mirrored Eastern’s 2016 run where the Lady Golden Knights had to defeat Garden Spot and Spring Grove to capture the hardware. Eastern York kicked things off on December 26th with a 61-47 shellacking of Garden Spot in their opening round battle. The Lady Golden Knights shook off a slow opening frame that saw them trail

14-12 to outscore the Lady Spartans by 16 points in the remaining three frames to secure the 14-point victory. Addy Malone led that charge with a game high 19 points while Mara Weaver chipped in with 14. Cass Arnold and Morgan Winter netted 10 points apiece while four other players split the remaining eight points evenly. Eastern not only claimed the tournament title with their 46-38 win over Spring Grove one night later, they also avenged a 54-52 loss in the season’s second game back on December 8. “It was good to beat them (Spring Grove) cause we lost to them by two the first time,” head coach Brad Weaver stated. The Lady Golden Knights followed the same script to knock off the Lady Rockets as in their opening round game, right down to the twopoint deficit after the opening eight minutes. This time it was Arnold leading the way with a game high 23 points that earned her tournament MVP honors. “That might be the best game I’ve ever seen her play for me,” said Weaver. “She made her foul shots, played a great all-around game.” Malone joined Arnold on the all-tournament team thanks to a solid 10-point effort. The quick two game winning streak moved Eastern York to 3-5 on
the season while jumping the Lady Golden Knights from 15th in the District 3-4A power rankings all the way up to 7th. “I feel pretty good with where we are at. I don’t like being 3-5 but I think we almost had to be,” said Weaver of his team’s start. “We’ve improved a lot just from having six tough games. Yeah we are 3-5, but I think we are on the right track now, so things are a lot better.”

handlers around the clock, learning up to 50 commands. At the age of one year, the dogs return to Lancaster. For the next six months, they live in a volunteer puppy home. “(The dogs) attend weekly outings and training sessions, and they will go out in the community so they can get socialization,” explained Breece. At the age of 18 months, the dogs are sent to trainers for six months of specialty training. Smith explained that many of the tasks the dogs perform are extensions of actions that come naturally to Labradors, such as retrieving and tugging, which make up 95 percent of the working service dog force. “A lot of the main job is retrieval from the floor or the counter or helping pay,” she said, adding that dogs tug open doors, carry bags that are too heavy (for their client), and remove articles of clothing, such as socks. “They push elevator buttons and handicapped-accessible button, and turn light switches on and off.” The newest puppy in the UDS program has been named Sully in honor of the yellow Labrador that served President George H. W. Bush and was photographed lying near his master’s casket during the funeral services in early December. UDS’ Sully is in need of a sponsor, which can be a local individual, organization, or business, to cover his twoyear training. Breece is also looking for a sponsor for the dog program’s new training room. Readers who would like to learn more about sponsorship and volunteer opportunities with UDS may visit www.ud services.org.

Program Will Feature Engle Clock The National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, will host a TIMEtalks presentation from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 19. The topic will be the Engle monumental clock. In the late 19th century, a short-lived type of clock — the monumental clock — enchanted the American public. Large, complicated, and painstakingly handcrafted, the clocks were made to awe and entertain. Between 1875 and 1900, more than two dozen of these clocks toured the United States and Europe. The first known monumental clock made in the U.S. was the Engle monumental clock, finished in 1878. Taking 20 years to complete and marketed as “the eighth wonder of the world,” it is 11 feet high, 8 feet wide, and 3 feet deep.
The Engle clock indicates the day of the week, current month, phase of the moon, and current tides. It has three towers, two organ movements, and 48 moving figures that comprise a unique cast of biblical characters, a group of soldiers from the American Revolution, and others. The clock toured across the eastern U.S. for 70 years before disappearing. The Engle clock was later discovered in a barn. It is now fully restored and resides at the museum. The presentation will include a full history of the clock, its creator, and the restoration process and a full demonstration of the Engle clock with a thorough discussion of all its functions. For more information, readers may contact 717684-8261, ext. 211.

location), we have added several clients in less than a year, including three or four schools,” said Breece. “We are so pleased with the pups-in-the-classroom opportunity. Our vision would be a dog in every school or at least every district.” In schools, dogs serve students with multiple disabilities, but they also serve in learning support classrooms. Kristy Smith, service dog program coordinator with UDS, said that dogs help with physical therapy or with fine motor skill issues, but they also aid students struggling with “the emotional aspects of school and life’s challenges.” Breece added that in some classrooms, time with a dog can be an incentive. “For some of those students who are more challenged, it’s a calming influence, and they can work toward time with the dog as a reward,” she said. Smith noted that currently UDS dogs are present in Cocalico, Ephrata, Penn Manor, and Northern York County school districts. “Each dog has a teacher or principal they go home with each night as the main handler, but we ask the schools to have a group of handlers,” she explained. Having a group of handlers allows a dog to work in multiple rooms. Breece noted that having a dog in a school affects the atmosphere of the building. “It changes the lives of the faculty by changing the environment behind the cement walls,” she said. “We’d like to see more dogs in schools.” A service dog’s training begins when it becomes part of the BARKS Prison Program, through which it is trained by an inmate at a Pennsylvania correctional facility. Puppies live with their inmate

Counselors are needed, and interested individuals age 18 and over may apply at www.aaronsacres.org by March 31. Paskoff noted that serving at Aaron’s Acres summer camp is great for undergraduate and graduate students studying subjects such as social work, special education, occupational therapy, and physical therapy, but the organization is also thrilled to have anyone with a heart for the campers. “We love when people without those majors do it and get comfortable interacting with our campers,” added Paskoff. “It’s great hands-on experience for people who want hands-on experience, and they’re always supervised by professionals.” Unpaid positions are also open to high school students age 14 and up who would like to volunteer as buddies at camp. Buddies act as positive role models for campers under the supervision of the group leader. Activities at camp include swimming

Interested individuals may register at www.aaronsacres.org by Sunday, March 31. Scholarships are available. New families will be scheduled for a face-to-face meeting in order for everyone to get acquainted and for staff to become familiar with the camper’s strengths, weaknesses, and capabilities. Having professional staff, including special education teachers and a nurse, as well as a 1-to-1 or 1-to-2 staff-to-child ratio, enables Aaron’s Acres to accept any child, regardless of medical or behavioral challenges. “Having that individualized attention makes for a great relationship and experience for the child,” Paskoff stated.

Optional programs for parents are also offered during camp, ranging from guest speakers to pampering days with manicures, pedicures, and massages. Aaron’s Acres has hosted its summer camp in Manheim since 2013. It merged its Dauphin County camp site with Manheim in 2017 and its Berks County site in 2018. Transportation to camp from Dauphin and Berks counties is available. Aaron’s Acres is currently in the process of looking for a property or space to purchase as a permanent centralized facility for its offices, summer camp, and yearround programming.
