Mad About Marietta BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Marietta means everything to Rebecca Carroll Baltozer. “I am an eighth generation Marietta resident,” she said. “I grew up in Marietta.” She’s taking her knowledge and love of the town with her in her new role as mayor of Marietta. She was elected in November and began her term on Jan. 3.
Fire significantly damaged the historic farmhouse at the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education.
Rising Up From The Ashes BY CATHY MOLITORIS
n late October, the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education suffered a devastating fire when lightning struck the property’s historic farmhouse. Now the nonprofit is working to rebuild and come back stronger than ever - and you can help. Alexis Campbell, executive director of the Horn Farm, noted that the fire destroyed the second and third floors of the building. While the first floor wasn’t touched by the blaze, it sustained extensive water damage due to putting out the fire and weather in the days that followed. “Also, due to the lightning strike, we had electrical damage in other buildings across the farm,” Campbell stated. In the weeks immediately following the fire, the staff worked to set up temporary office space and make short-term repairs to the building. Emergency crews focused on securing the farmhouse to withstand winter weather, including putting up a temporary roof that will keep water and snow from getting inside. The Horn Farm Center, 4945 Horn Road, York, is an educational nonprofit focused on regenerative
Applications are now being taken for the programs, and scholarships are available from the Powder Mill Foundation. Campbell noted that although the Horn Farm Center is moving forward, the organization needs help to reach its goals. “First and foremost, we are in need of significant financial support,” she said. “The farmhouse was the base of our operations from which we have served the York community for the past 17 years. We plan to rebuild as quickly and as sustainably as possible, but that rebuild will take time. We are fortunate to have insurance, but our expenses will almost certainly exceed any insurance funds we receive.” She thanked the community for its support in the weeks following the fire. “Our friends and neighbors have offered their time, resources and financial support,” she stated, adding that the center will continue planning its rebuilding efforts through the spring, with a goal of completing the rebuild by the summer of 2023. For more information on how you can help as the Horn Farm Center recovers, visit https://hornfarm center.org/fire-recovery.

agriculture and ecological education. “In all of our work at the Horn Farm Center, we aim to inspire and innovate practices and behaviors that address some of our planet’s most pressing needs: restoring broken ecosystems, rebuilding lost wildlife habitat and reversing climate change,” Campbell explained. Since the beginning of 2021, the board and staff have been working on a strategic plan that focuses on increasing the center’s impact both on the land and in the community. “Our goals include expanding and improving our educational programming and continuing to practice restorative land stewardship on all 189 acres of the property,” Campbell said. This past year, the center launched the Land Steward Training program, equipping 11 new land stewards with the skills to further the Horn Farm’s mission. This year, the center plans to expand its training programs by increasing enrollment and adding a new learning module focused on ecological garden training. “Both programs are immersive learning experiences focused on deep ecological literacy and practical skill building,” Campbell remarked.
Running for mayor was a natural choice, Baltozer stated, noting that her past involvement with community organizations includes serving as president and treasurer of Marietta Restoration Associates as well as serving on the board of Susquehanna Stage Company. Prior to assuming her role of mayor, she served on the Marietta Borough Council, and she just co-chaired the 55th Candlelight Tour in December, which drew more than 1,200 people to Marietta. As mayor, Baltozer hopes to focus on diversity and inclusion in the town and inspire new residents to get involved. “I hope to get people … to realize the decisions that affect our daily lives truly happen at the lowest level of government,” she explained, noting that she’s also excited to show off everything Marietta has to offer to newcomers in town and visitors. Her role as mayor will include not only promoting Marietta and what it offers but also working collaboratively with other groups and individuals. “I will be a part of helping our police department and keeping our town safe,” she stated.

Distinguished alumni were recognized at a breakfast in 2019.
The Education Foundation formed in 2005 with a mission of supporting the Columbia School District. “Our main goal is to obtain funding, whether it’s through donations from community members or corporations, endowments or fundraisers, so that we can assist the school district with
remarked. Over the years, the program has recognized scientists, professors, authors, doctors and entrepreneurs. Former Secretary of State and retired Army Gen. Colin Powell’s deputy chief of staff was a Columbia graduate who was recognized through the program, Cunningham noted. Alumni are inducted at a breakfast typically held in the fall, and then they spend the day in the district meeting with students. “We try to fit them into classes based on their career,” Cunningham said, noting that honorees also receive a plaque and will have a plaque displayed on the wall of fame in the lobby of
the high school. The only requirement for nominees is they must have graduated from Columbia High School, and the foundation will recognize alumni posthumously. “The distinguished alumni are people who we hope will make the kids say, ‘Wow!’ and inspire them to see what they can achieve after high school,” Cunningham commented. “We want the students to listen to their stories and think, ‘I could do that.’” For more information on the Columbia Education Foundation and the distinguished alumni program, including the nomination form, visit www.columbiaef.org.

Members of the community helped York County Community Foundation (YCCF) advance its vision to create a vibrant York County by awarding 12 nonprofits grants totaling $64,019. The community grant making program of YCCF invites residents from across York County to bring a wider perspective to the review process. Volunteer grant readers evaluated grants of $6,000 or less from the Fund for York County and the Hahn Home Fund for Embracing Aging. This year’s volunteer grant readers reviewed 17 applications and awarded $46,019 from the Fund for York County and $18,000 from Embracing Aging. Community grant readers are members of the community who are at least age 18, reside in York County, and are not employed by a nonprofit agency serving York County. They participate in grant evaluation training held by the YCCF and use an online system to read and score the grants before deciding which nonprofits received funding. The Fund for York County grants support one of several categories, including education for disadvantaged youths, workforce development, downtown revitalization in York County cities and boroughs, and neighborhood revitalization in York city. Embracing Aging grants support programs that focus on reducing social isolation of York County residents age 50 and older. Fund for York County grant recipients include PennCares Support Services for the Take a Moment to Breathe: Kids Yoga & Mindfulness Classes program, which teaches children breathing techniques, strategies, and yoga poses to combat stress and anxiety and to promote a positive self-image; York County Literacy Council

The haunted attraction Field of Screams hosted its ninth annual Zombie Fun Run 5K on Nov. 13, 2021, with proceeds benefiting the PA Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC). The Field of Screams donation will support the PBCC’s programs and services, including personalized patient advocacy, the free Friends Like Me Care Package program and the PBCC Research Grants Initiative. To date, Field of Screams has contributed more than $53,000 to the PBCC. Participants in the Zombie Fun Run experienced the thrills of being chased by zombies on a 5K course through the Field of Screams. Participants raced through mud, crawled and climbed over more than 40 obstacles and jumped through fire, all
while being surrounded by movie quality scenes. Some registrants even chose to act as zombies in the showdown of runners versus zombies. The fun run course was open during the day and, for a more intense experience, under the starts. The PBCC is a statewide nonprofit organization. The PBCC’s mission is to help find a cure for breast cancer and to improve the quality of breast cancer education, research, programming and outreach in the state. For more information about the 2021 Zombie Fun Run for the PA Breast Cancer Coalition, visit www.zombie funrun.com.
