Exhibit Showcases Susquehanna River rowing up in Lancaster County, Lynn Smoker spent a lot of time outdoors, but one subject interested him more than others. “I always wanted to make myself an expert on the Susquehanna River,” said the retired history teacher. Thanks to Smoker’s expertise, anyone can learn about the important role the river has played throughout history in an exhibit at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. “A Look Back at Hunting, Fishing & Trapping on the Susquehanna River” opened in November 2020 and will run through August. It features items collected by Smoker over the years as well as contributions from other community members. “I chose this topic for the exhibit simply because of my interest in the subject,” Smoker noted. “I grew up in Columbia, and my grandfather

had a cabin in York County. I spent a lot of time on the river. I’m a river rat, as they say. The river has always been a part of me. I started collecting items related to the river in 1980, and I never stopped.” The exhibit includes displays about fishing, including ice fishing; furs; turtles; ducks and more. “There’s a section on the early American/Native American influence, with some old eel traps and things like that,” Smoker said. He amassed his collection through visits to household sales and antiques malls. “You would be absolutely amazed at what you find and where you find it,” he stated, adding that one of his favorite objects is an old shad net that dates back to the early 1900s. “You just never know what you’ll discover.” The exhibit also features taxidermy of mammals and fish, unusual items like a turtle probe and many kinds of traps. “You’ll see a little bit of everything here,” Smoker said. Then, new restrictions and rising COVID-19 numbers prompted the church to shift to online worship. Transit Entities Plan Merger Capital Area Transit (CAT) and rabbittransit recently announced plans to merge into a single entity to be called the Susquehanna Regional Transportation Authority. The merger is intended to provide opportunities for increased levels of mobility and result in improved efficiencies for operations. The new, joint authority will be able to leverage the buying power of a larger organization, eliminate duplicative operations, and have greater opportunity to qualify for discretionary grants. As a result, CAT and rabbittransit intend to offer enhanced services, including a single fare payment system, expanded call center hours, improved connections to large regional employers, enhanced service to regional health care programs, and enhanced connectivity between campuses for stu-

dents. The merger will help avoid a proposed 40% reduction in service at CAT, which has been struggling financially. Additionally, it is not expected to have any impact on current bus drivers or mechanics at either agency. CAT and rabbittransit noted that in 2014, transit agencies in Berks and Lancaster counties went through a similar merger. The next step in the process is for the two authorities to hold public hearings on the proposal and then adopt resolutions. The CAT board of directors is set to meet on Thursday, Jan. 28, at noon, and the rabbittransit board of directors will meet on Thursday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m. The public is invited to join by Zoom or phone. To register for the public hearing, community members may contact info@ rabbittransit.org or 800632-9063.

We don’t really think about it as a resource for the essentials of life, but it was for so many people.” “A Look Back at Hunting, Fishing & Trapping on the Susquehanna River” is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.

said. “It’s a pocket guide, and it talks about the iron industry. That has been very popular, and we’re currently looking into getting it reprinted because we’ve given out close to 8,000 copies over the past two and a half years.” Haneman said the organization learned about the social studies award last year from a board member, who suggested applying. “We sent them everything we had, because we didn’t really know what they wanted,” he recalled. “In September, we got the notification that we had won.” Criteria for the award included an exemplary social studies curricular program, as well as a program that encouraged creative ideas, innovative teaching and involvement of students, the community and teachers. “For a little nonprofit like ours that’s all run by volunteers, it was an honor to even be considered for this award,” Haneman noted. “It was incredible to learn that we were considered the best in the state.” He said everything the center does is meant to highlight the history of the region and to keep that history alive. “This is history that has not been written down, and it’s not being taught in schools,” he remarked. “It’s important for people to know the history of our area.”

The program tells the story of the iron industry and its importance to Lancaster County, said David Haneman, Rivertownes PA USA president. “The county has a rich history, especially when it comes to iron furnaces,” he noted. At one time, eight iron furnaces operated along a 2.5-mile stretch between Columbia and Marietta. The anthracite coal that was plentiful in eastern Pennsylvania made the county a perfect spot for these furnaces, he said, adding that iron furnaces replaced the charcoal furnaces used before the mid-1800s. Musselman-Vesta Iron Furnace Center’s building is located on the site of the original office building from the last of the local furnaces, Haneman stated, noting that it took about 10 years to restore the building. “We have a number of displays and exhibits there,” he said. “We have an HO-scale model of what the furnace complex would have looked like. It’s interesting for both students and adults to visit.” Although programs are offered on a limited basis now due to COVID-19, the center regularly holds activities for school groups and the public and provides educational materials. “We have an iron furnace walking guide for people who are walking along the Northwest River Trail,” Haneman

a Communion table of sorts.” North, who worked for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship for 22 years prior to coming to Wrightsville Presbyterian, said he’s been nothing but impressed by the congregation and its desire not only to help others, but also to support one another. “Everybody says it must be so hard to be a new pastor (who started in) 2020, and it is hard,” he stated. “There are some people in our congregation who I haven’t even ever seen their faces. ... But I’m getting to know the depth of this congregation in other ways. People are doing their best with what we have. They are not complaining. It’s really been amazing to come in and be a part of this church. God is in this, even though we’re in this miserable time. God is with us.”

“My family experienced this loving congregation firsthand,” he noted. “They just flooded our house with meals. We felt supported and loved.” At Christmastime, the church continued to find creative ways to worship, including holding an outdoor Christmas Eve service in the pouring rain. “It was a 10-minute service. We held glow sticks instead of candles, and it really rained hard, but people still showed up,” North said. The church is currently providing Sunday worship at 10 a.m. on its YouTube channel and Bible study via Zoom at noon on Wednesdays. Starting this month, it will offer online Communion as well. “We are going to try this,” North said. “We’re asking members to gather the elements at home and set up

Businesses Pledge To Manheim Township Rec. Help Repair Memorial Introduces Homeschool Phys. Ed. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Greenwood Cemetery in Lancaster recently received support from local businesses, which pledged to donate their time and materials to help replace a section of a concrete slab. The slab replacement project is coordinated by Vietnam veteran Clyde Snyder, founder of Vet 21 Salute Honor Guard of Lancaster. When he found out about the need for repairs, Snyder, who had worked in the concrete business for many years, offered to find an affordable bid for the project. Dennis Funk & Sons, Columbia, will excavate and haul away the old slab. Troy Styer of Rohrer’s Concrete Company, Lititz, will donate concrete, and Barry Sauder of Sauder Brothers Concrete Company, Manheim, will also

provide aid. Snyder also thanked Chapter 1008 American Vietnam Veterans America Committee for playing a role in the project. The project was scheduled to begin when weather conditions allowed. For more information, readers may contact Clyde Snyder at 717-475-0590.

BY ANN MEAD ASH

When Michael Kurland graduated from the University of Tennessee, he headed to Jacksonville, Fla., with an idea. “I realized there was a large homeschool contingency down there,” said Kurland. “I started a homeschool PE (physical education) program.” In 2003, Kurland began teaching a curriculum he designed, attracting 400 students the first year, and eventually doubling the size of the program. Later, Kurland took the concept to a more urban setting in Maryland, where hundreds of students took part, some driving up to an hour for a class. A year ago, Kurland came to the Lancaster area where he took the position of youth sports and activities manager with the Manheim Township Recreation Department. His background came to the attention of his supervisor Matt Stopa, and the result is a homeschool gym class for Lancaster County students. Classes for any homeschooled children in the county were slated to begin on Jan. 4 at the Overlook Activity Center, 301 Golf Drive, Lancaster. The first session will end on Thursday, Jan. 28. Consecutive sessions will be offered beginning, Monday, Feb. 1; Monday, March 1; Monday, March 29; Monday, April 26; and Monday, May 24. Classes, which last an hour, are broken into five age groups. The kinder-

Homeschool physical education classes (above photo) will be taught by Michael Kurland (right photo). Monthly sessions began Jan. 4.

garten class is coed, but first and second grades, third through fifth grades, sixth through eighth grades, and ninth through 12th grades are divided by gender. Kurland noted that each monthly session is focused on a particular activity or sport. “We start out with the basic concepts and skills, and we build on those throughout the month,” said Kurland. “By the end of the month, we’re into the games ... whether it is softball or swimming or basketball.” Kurland also introduces students to games they may not be familiar with, such as gaga ball, as well as international games. A segment is devoted to the activities that were once part of the Presidential Fitness Test, which include a mile run, a

shuttle run, and the V-sit reach. To promote social growth, Kurland has designed the curriculum to include teamwork and building individual self-esteem. “Parents receive progress reports after each session,” said Kurland, adding that the course makes it easy for students who are at middle and high school levels to show they have obtained all their physical education credits. Kurland, who holds a degree in sports management, will be the sole teacher during the first year. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, classes will be limited to 10 students to provide for social distancing. In the future, class sizes may range up to 20 students. Other safety measures will include taking temperatures, wearing masks and

gloves, handwashing, and sanitizing class areas between classes. There is a fee to take part in each session. If a homeschool co-op group wants to keep certain students together, Kurland is open to creating a class for that group. He also said the possibility of including students who are taking part in virtual schooling exists. Readers who would like to register children for the classes may visit www.manheim township.org/253/recreation -and-park-planning or call 717-290-7180.

The Lancaster Conservancy recently announced that Lancaster County is now a certified National Wildlife Federation (NWF) Community Wildlife Habitat. This certification shows Lancaster’s commitment to be a healthier, greener, and more wildlifefriendly county by creating wildlife habitat throughout its communities while also educating and engaging residents. The Lancaster Conservancy’s Community Wildlife Habitat initiative is a volunteer led effort that works with local property owners and organizations to encourage planting native plants, trees, and gardens that reduce stormwater runoff while providing habitat and food for wildlife and pollinators. The NWF has certified more than 568 sites, including yards, schools, businesses, community gardens, parks, and places of worship. Each of these sites provides the four basic elements that all wildlife need to thrive - food, water,

cover, and places to raise young - while integrating sustainable gardening and landscaping practices. Linda Ferich, who spearheaded this initiative for the last three years, was recently notified that Lancaster County now has enough certified sites for the county to qualify as the first in the state of Pennsylvania with this designation. With a critical mass of certified gardens, the goal is to create corridors for wildlife to thrive. Ferich personally visited and advised well over 300 property owners over the past three years. Ferich, Allison Zechman, and Margie Hall also led Habitat Steward trainings where 40 community volunteers were taught to identify non-native and invasive plants, analyze gardens and sites, and implement other sustainable landscaping practices. In recent years, the group of volunteers also launched additional initiatives focused specifically on

creating habitat for wildlife at schools and places of worship. Encouraging community members to create native habitat is also one of the primary goals of the Conservancy’s annual Lancaster Water Week slated to take place for its fourth year from Friday, June 4, through Saturday, June 12, 2021. Removing invasive plants, planting natives, and reimagining lawns are critical steps toward

The PBA Minority Attorney Conference Planning Subcommittee is being recognized for its outstanding efforts, contributions, and service in the furtherance of the PBA Strategic Diversity and Inclusion Plan demonstrated in organizing the committee’s 30th annual conference, “Communities Under Attack: Leadership Going Forward,” in October 2019. On Oct. 29, Lancaster Mennonite Middle School students in the Project-Based Learning track hosted their first Exhibition Night to wrap up the first quarter, with the focus on the theme “Civilizations. Projects were presented both virtually and in person. Some of the students created and edited videos showing their understanding of civilization from one of three perspectives: Government, Faith and Community, or Dystopian Literature. They also interviewed their parents after the exhibition as a response to their work. Madelyn Stoltzfus, Class of

Taking the perspective of a person related to their research, students individually shared their understanding of their topic with high school students. Students also shared and reflected on their videos and the quarter’s major assignments with their families. Leading up to the project showcase, students learned what a culture is, how civilizations are governed, how societies are structured in dystopian literature, and how communities and neighbors are shaped by faith. The Faith and Community perspective focused on Luke 10:25-37, the story of the Merciful Samari-

tan. Students learned the importance of being a good neighbor to other members of their communities. In their exploration of dystopian literature, students learned about the aspects of dystopias and utopias, and they read books about dystopian societies. In their studies of government, students learned about various systems of government, the U.S. presidential election, and different types of economies. The second-quarter theme is “To Infinity and Beyond. Students will explore the concept of humans living on Mars and will create a virtual colony.
