Columbia Animal Shelter To Open In February By Chelsea Peifer
Renovation of the new Columbia Animal Shelter, located at the site of the former Vigilant Fire Hall at 265 S. 10th St., Columbia, is nearly complete. Executive director Tammy Loughlin said that the state-of-the-art shelter is slated to officially open to the public in mid-February. Demolition and renovation of the approximately 8,000-square-foot structure began on June 6, 2018. Initial plans were to renovate the interior without making extensive changes to the exterior, but Loughlin noted that as work began it was determined that major alterations to the exterior of the building would also be necessary. Support beams that were signed by previous builders and firefighters still remain intact in order to fulfill the goal of preserving the history of the original structure.
The shelter is being funded by the Harold and Judy McKonly Family Foundation and will operate as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Opening a top-notch cat shelter had been a dream for the late Judy McKonly, and after her passing in August 2017 the McKonly family set things in motion to turn her dream into a reality. According to Loughlin, the mission of the Columbia Animal Shelter is to rescue and rehome at-risk companion animals while providing quality health care and adoption services. “Our goal is to collaborate, communicate, and educate about animal cruelty prevention and the importance of animal rescue and welfare,” stated Loughlin. “Residents will be able to come to our shelter and leave with a new best friend, while also being educated with the knowledge to care for their newest family

This year’s theme, “Why We Can’t Wait: Achieving Economic Equity,” will be championed through Bryant’s address. Bryant is the founder of Operation Hope, a nonprofit financial inclusion organization, and he was previously named one of Time magazine’s “50 Leaders for the Future.” He is an entrepreneur, an author, and a philanthropist. “The 2019 MLK Breakfast Committee, chaired by Phil Wenger of Fulton Bank and composed of local businesspeople, nonprofit partners, and community volunteers, felt that John Hope Bryant’s passion for achieving economic equity would be impactful for the 31st annual breakfast,” said Community Action Partnership (CAP) of Lancaster County chief development officer Kristy Aurand. Crispus Attucks is a program of CAP, and it strives to be a leader in efforts to ensure equity
Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, invites to public to view “Ice Harvesting Along the Susquehanna,” an immersive exhibit about the ice harvesting industry. Prior to refrigeration, homes and commercial businesses required ice to keep food cold. A worldwide industry was created to collect ice from frozen rivers, ponds, and lakes and ship it by wagon and rail to be sold. Pennsylvania ranked third in the nation for ice production behind only Maine and New York. Locally, Columbia had at least three ice houses that kept residents supplied with ice for their homes. Deliveries of ice were brought by the “ice man” to homes on a regular basis. The exhibit follows the ice from the river to the kitchen. It features a wide variety of objects, including ice harvesting tools such as drills, saws, and
for all people who call Lancaster home, Aurand said. “As we honor and celebrate the great achievements of Dr. King, we recognize our responsibility to live his legacy,” Aurand continued. “We are looking forward to (hearing) a message (from Bryant) that encourages urgency in eliminating barriers to economic equity in our community, along with guiding principles on creating systems change. We hope attendees will walk away enthusiastic about continuing this important conversation and ready to roll up their sleeves and work with us toward advancing economic equity.” There is a cost to attend the MLK Breakfast, and reservations are required. Folks may purchase tickets by calling 717394-6604, ext. 125, or searching for the event at www.eventbrite.com.

plows. Antique ice boxes, ice shavers, ice crushers, and other memorabilia are also on view. The exhibit was designed and installed by Susquehanna Heritage, which manages the building for the Borough of Columbia. Objects and content development was led by local historian Lynn Smoker. Smoker will present a Talk With the Collector in the exhibit hall on Thursday, Jan. 24, at 6:30 p.m. Smoker will discuss the ice harvesting industry and his collection. Complimentary refreshments will be available. There is a suggested donation per person. To make reservations, readers may visit www.susquehannaheritage .org/events. Mini tours of the exhibit will be available beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Sundays, Jan. 27, Feb. 3 and Feb. 17. Susquehanna Heritage staff will lead the 20- to 30minute tours. Guides will showcase important objects, provide in-depth information, and answer questions. Susquehanna Heritage is one of 12 state-designated heritage areas in Pennsylvania working to highlight important local history and spark economic development through heritage and ecotourism. The organization’s focus on the Susquehanna’s history is brought to life in this new exhibit at Columbia Crossing. The exhibit is free, but donations are appreciated to help operate the center and provide educational programs. Columbia Crossing River Trails Center is open on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. “Ice Harvesting Along the Susquehanna” will remain on display through Sunday, March 31. For more information, readers may contact Susquehanna Heritage’s Columbia Crossing manager, Hope Byers, at 717-449-5607, ext. 1, or hbyers@susquehannaheritage.org.

outside at their will and providing space animal intake from within Columbia Borough to focus on reducing the feral cat to roam. Initially, the shelter will only allow population. “There is such a high need
here in Columbia that we feel we need to start here before we branch out,” explained Loughlin. Adoption opportunities will be open to all, whether or not they live in Columbia. “Adoptions will be on best fit, not firstcome, first-served,” noted Loughlin. Every animal will receive the necessary shots and vaccinations and will be microchipped before it leaves the shelter. Space for a maximum of 10 dogs has also been allotted at Columbia Animal Shelter. Loughlin said that at least two of those spaces have been reserved for housing dogs rescued by members of the Columbia Borough Police Department. The shelter also features office space, adoption areas where people will be able to meet with their potential pets, and an isolation department where animals will be temporarily placed before their initial exam in order to prevent any potential spread of disease. Loughlin is excited about utilizing the shelter’s community room for youth programs and informational seminars. “Part of what we’re going to offer is a lot of community programs,” she noted. Loughlin was hired as the shelter’s executive director in June 2018 after managing an animal shelter in Westerly, R.I., for more than seven years. Additional staff positions at the facility will include an assistant director, two veterinarians, two veterinary technicians, and two part-time caretakers. Volunteers are welcome, and applications are currently accessible at https://columbiaanimal shelter.com. Information about the shelter’s grand opening and upcoming events will also be posted on the website and on Instagram at @ColumbiaAnimalShelter.

Columbia last Monday. league meeting in Columbia.
The Young and the Restless is a popular soap opera and can also be used to describe the 2018-19 winter sports season on the hill. Young as in all three sports combined have just one senior, and both restless and competitive in how they play. There are also a couple of new coaches on the hill and new teams to face. Here is your weekly Merchandiser sports recap for the winter season at Columbia High School. WRESTLING Jordon Halter and Nathan Warner are the new co-coaches for the Tide in wrestling. Both are former Crimson Tide wrestlers and members of the 100 win club. Unlike last year when Columbia had just one wrestler, Halter and Warner have six wrestlers, so yes, forfeits and inexperience will be an issue but not the effort on the mat. “We are young and inexperienced but we are working hard to get better,” Halter said after a recent match. In their recent matches, the matmen were beaten by Eastern York, 5424 and Section 3 rival Lancaster Catholic.
Against Catholic, a 48-24 loss, three wrestlers Breanna Murphy, Jaden Moore and Alex Vazquez picked up their first wins of the season while Michaelangelo Stewart continued his dominance with a pin. The interesting note about the Catholic match is some of the athletes wrestling for the opposition were instrumental parts of the Columbia midget program and are underclassmen at Catholic. Those wrestlers, who won by forfeit, were Mason McClair, Caden Droege, Jake Hank and Andrew Reese. In other dual meets, the Tide was beaten by Pequea Valley, 54-16 as Stewart, Derek Nell and Michael Alvardo picked up wins. Next up, another league match with Section 3 newcomer Octorara, which the Braves won 69-3. Stewart was the lone winner. Columbia, forfeiting up to six weight classes, also lost to Section 3 heavyweight Northern Lebanon, 72-6.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL Speaking of young, that describes coach Kerry Glover’s boys’ basketball team. There are no seniors on the team and the starting five is composed of one junior, two sophomores and two freshmen. And despite the youth, the Tide got their signature win of the three years ‘ Glover has been Columbia’s coach by beating Lancaster Mennonite, 74-63. In that one, the first half was the difference as the Tide, playing inspired basketball, jumped out to a 44-28 lead after falling behind by 10 points early. “We are starting to figure things out and understand how I want to play the game,” Glover said. Sophomore Michael Poole was the Tide’s top gun with 16 followed by Kerry Glover with 12 and Matt McCleary with 15. Unfortunately, the momentum did last for the young squad as Columbia dropped a 64-46 result in their next game against Annville Cleona, a team they beat earlier in the season in their
Section 5 opener, 50-47. McCleary had 13 in the loss, while Poole had 19 in the win. The Tide boys have been in two tournaments this year - the Northeastern Tournament to open the season, losing to the host Bobcats in the season opener, 65-51 and to Eastern York, 65-45. Still on the road, they defeated Schuylkill Valley, 67-59. In the home opener, Lancaster Catholic, the Tide’s former Section 4 rival, was the opponent and the talented Crusaders finished on top, 65-42. With the non-league, early games out of the picture, the Tide opened Section 5 play with the dramatic three-point win over Annville-Cleona. Next up Lebanon Catholic and an easy 61-43 win, which was followed by an 89-49 drubbing of Pequea Valley. Over the holidays, Columbia traveled to Hanover for their second tournament where they split games losing to Camp Hill, 76-61 and beating Hanover, 44-36.
Columbia is 4-2 in the new Section 5 of the L-L League but has a tough non-league schedule remaining. Since Section 5 teams play 10 league games, coach Glover and his team have big non-league games with Trinity, Berks Catholic and Eastern York coming up. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The team with the lone senior player is the girls’ basketball team and she is a good one in Janeah Neal, who is over 1,100 points for her career. She will have to carry the load for the Tide this season as freshmen starters Morgan Bigler and MacKenzie Burke mature. Last week, the Tide split games with Annville-Cleona and Linden Hall, probably one of the best teams they will play this season. On the home floor, Columbia scored its second win of the season over A-C by a 42-30 score with Neal, Bigler and Burke in double figures. “We needed that win,” said coach Karl Kreiser. The night before, the Tide was beaten by Linden Hall, 67-32. They were outscored in the third quarter, 27-4. “We made a lot of mistakes against their press,” Kreiser said. Columbia opened the season splitting games in their own tournament, beating Schuylkill Valley in the opener
before falling to an aggressive Big Spring Club in the championship game. In their final pre-season game, they lost to Donegal. Columbia then opened league play with a win over Annville-Cleona and followed that with a loss to league newcomer Lancaster Country Day. Columbia got its second Section 5 win when they beat Lebanon Catholic for the first time in a number of years before returning home for a Section 5 loss to pre-season favorite Pequea Valley, 72-57. Over the holidays, it was a split of games at the Northeastern Tournament losing to the hosts, 68-54 and beating West Perry, 59-48. Their first league game of the new year was against Lancaster Mennonite and that was a 65-46 loss. BOWLING At 19-23 in league play, the Tide bowling team is doing well. Last week, they lost to Garden Spot by a 7-0 score as Shane Kinser, the team’s top bowler rolled a 540 with a high game of 191. They also narrowly lost to Cocalico by a 2984-2893 score as Kinser rolled a 500 series, followed by Javon Jackson (418), Amy Reigle (411) and Blake Helton (404).

Writeface, a local nonprofit organization that offers free writing workshops to veterans, has announced its 2019 winter/spring schedule. Folks do not need to be a writer or an artist to participate. Writeface strives to provide a safe space for veterans, in the company of other veterans, to explore their inner landscape by using proven writing techniques to become reacquainted with aspects of themselves that were lost in battle. “Our goal, first and foremost, is always to create a safe environment for veterans to explore and address any difficulty they may be experiencing in their present life that may have roots in the past,” said Annie Ginder, who co-founded Writeface with Scott Hower and serves as a facilitator. “The workshops we offer seem to naturally create a sense of camaraderie that many veterans say they haven’t been able to recapture in civilian life. (The) Writers on the Storm (workshop) specifically uses the metaphor of a storm in each of their classes to help teach specific writing and journaling tools that can be used for the rest of
their lives to help manage issues that come up in civilian life.” Starting on Thursday, Jan. 17, and continuing through Thursday, March 28, Writers on the Storm will be held at the Transitional Living Center, 105 E. King St., Lancaster. The workshops will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. No class will be held on Thursday, Feb. 14. Additionally, Writers on the Storm will be offered as part of Millersville University’s Lifelong Learning Institute, which will begin in March. For more information and to sign up for the workshop at the college, visit www.millersville.edu/milli. Workshops for veterans will be held at the Columbia Creative Factory, 247 Locust St., Columbia. Sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays from Jan. 21 through March 25. The workshops will combine writing with different art media. Parking will be paid for by Writeface, and free lunches will be provided to all veterans who participate. For more information or questions, readers may contact Ginder at 717-7990154 or annie.ginder@comcast.net or Hower at 717-209-0410 or scotthower@aol.com.

Eastern’s Neijon Gonzalez locks up the Tide’s Jesse Tallarico and turns him for a 1:39 fall at 160 pounds to add six points to the Knights’ 55-42 nonleague win in Columbia last Monday. by Eric Pyles
The Eastern York wrestling team has emerged from a week-long daunting stretch that included three old fashion dual meets plus a goround at Elizabethtown’s Grizzly Duals where the Golden Knights racked up five matches in one day. The highlight of that stretch was a 54-24 takedown of Columbia, Eastern’s longtime neighbor across the
river. “It was nice win over there. We bumped our lineup around to try and match-up a little bit better,” said head coach Dan Garner of a match that saw a total of seven forfeits and one no contest. Of those forfeits, Eastern was on the better end of six of them starting with Nick Hess kicking off the match at 285. Matthew Thomas (120), Hunter Sowers (126), Justin Manganello (138), Isaac Buser (195) and Drake Brown (220) enjoyed the same easy walk to the center of the mat as Hess, gifting the Golden Knights a quick and easy 36 points. The final 18 team points came in Eastern York’s final three wins starting with Jonah Dougherty pinning Darnell Tucker at 145 pounds. Nathan Robbins made it two
pinfalls in a row with his win at 152 while Neijon Gonzalez completed the pinfall trifecta at 160 pounds. The low point came on January 3rd with a 55-18 loss to West York. “Tough match-up with West York,” said Garner. “They have a real nice squad this year.” Eastern York managed just three wins but all carried bonus points starting with Robbins at 152. The senior pinned Victor Gonzalez a mere 15-seconds before the final horn of their 152-pound tilt. The win put Eastern on the board but West York had already claimed four weight classes, putting the score at 19-6. Nicholas Spotts made it 25-12 after his second period pinfall win over Tyquan Harrison at 170 while Wherley picked up the final victory, this one a forfeit at 106. In between the high and low points of the daunting stretch was a trip to Elizabethtown to compete in the Grizzly Duals. “We were able to pick up two wins, beating Salisbury Township and Elizabethtown,” said Garner, “and I really would have liked to have that Palmyra match. It was so close but just to see improvement in the Palmyra and West York matches, I thought it was a good day of wrestling for the kids.” The improvement Garner mentioned was most noticeable in the West York results. Just days after a 55-18 loss in a regular dual match, the Golden Knights closed the gap down to 47-22 in their Grizzly Duals match-up. The head man also pointed to the improvement against Palmyra who handed Eastern York a 45-27 loss at the ELCO Duals
back on December 28th. This time around Eastern nearly pulled out the win before falling 39-33. Add in a 5418 defeat to a Dover squad that went undefeated on the day, to Eastern York’s 51-22 win over Salisbury Township and their 45-27 win over the host Bears and you see why Garner called it a good day of wrestling for his squad. The Golden Knights returned to regular dual match action on January 9th, topping Delone Catholic 42-38. The two sides split the 14 weight classes down the middle but all seven of Eastern’s victories carried bonus points, giving the Golden Knights the final edge. Wherley (106), Robbins (152) and Hess (285) picked up the easy forfeits wins for Eastern York. Hailu Barrow picked up Eastern’s first pinfall win, needing just 63 seconds to take care of Harrison Cole at 132 pounds. Manganello followed with a second straight pinfall, this one lasting 107 seconds. Brown posted the front end of Eastern York’s second set of pins, taking down Michael Deporter in 36 seconds in their 195-pound bout. Buser closed out the action on the mat with his pinfall win over Nick Groff at 220. Eastern York Lady Golden Knights sitting at 8-5 overall. With the two games from the holiday tournament action as their starting point, the Lady Golden Knights moved on to West York on January 4th. Eastern handed the Lady Bulldogs a 50-34 loss to make it three and a row with head coach Brad Weaver simply saying, “we played a good game.” Mara Weaver led all scorers with 18 points with Addy Malone chipping in 14. One day later Eastern York was back in action, this time traveling to West York to participate in the Lady Bulldog Showcase which pitted the Golden Knights against Shippensburg. Behind Malone’s 16 points and 11 from Cass Arnold, Eastern rolled to a 41-28 victory. “We got out to a pretty quick lead,” said Weaver. “I think we played 12 girls that night and everyone kept working and everyone played well.” After taking Sunday off, the Golden Knights were back in action hosting South Western. Eastern enjoyed a trio of players in double figures led by
Your
Arnold’s game high 15 points to steal a 50-40 win from the Division One frontrunners. Weaver attributed the 10-point win to the team’s game plan. “We had a really good game plan and the girls followed that plan exactly,” said Weaver. Bri Grim (12 points) and Malone (11 points) backing up Arnold with 23 combined points certainly helped. Win number six in the run was by far the easiest. “We jumped out quick and they are kind of in a rebuilding process. It was good we went up there and took care of business,” Weaver said of his team’s 53-30 trouncing of Dover on January 8th. Malone, the only player in double figures, drained all nine of her free throws on the way to a game high 13 points while Arnold and Morgan Winter chipped in with eight points apiece. Eastern York picked up win number seven on January 9th, topping Donegal 54-43 in a rescheduled game from December 12th. Arnold and Malone paced the attack with matching 12-point games but it was Donegal’s
Kiera Baughman taking game high honors thanks to her 17-point night. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Winning basketball is contagious at Eastern York as the boy’s squad sports a 10-2 mark behind a fivegame winning streak that started when the Golden Knights claimed their own holiday tournament on December 28th and 29th. Much to the surprise of the packed West York gym, the Golden Knights managed to make it three in a row by stealing a 59-58 win on January 4th. “To go there with them being 8-0, in their gym, with a really, really big atmosphere and a lot of people in attendance and to just gut through it and pull one out late, was definitely a momentum builder as we move towards the second half of our season,” said first year head coach Justin Seitz of the one-point victory. Only six Eastern players scored in the game but four reached double figures led by Stephen Wisler’s 17 points. Trevor Seitz added 13 points, nine from long range, while Bryce Henise (11 points) and Demonte Martin (10 points) rounded out the double-digit club. Kaleb Corwell and Kade Wiley finished up the scoring with matching
four-point games. The Golden Knights had little time to rest as they were back at it on Saturday the 5th with a game opposite Lancaster Mennonite in the War of Roses that pits teams from York and Lancaster against each other. Eastern needed overtime but they managed a 66-60 win over the Blazers. “It took us a while to get going,” Seitz stated. “We had some mental lapses throughout but showed signed of maturity and were able to make plays late to secure a win.” Martin tallied a game high 21 points while Trevor Seitz drilled four from behind the arc on his way to 18 points. Henise and Wisler chipped in 11 points each to help secure the win. The Golden Knights did not need overtime to get by Dover on the 8th but a 46-40 final left things closer than the Eastern fans would have preferred. Dover jumped out to a 17-11 lead after the opening frame but Eastern York slowly chipped away at the six-point deficit to secure the win. Martin tied Dover’s Elijah Sutton for game high honors with a 20-point effort while Henise added four points, five steals, five rebounds and five assists in the win.

Plans are underway for the 11th annual A Taste of Western Lancaster County celebration, to be held on Friday, Feb. 1, at the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. The event will run from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Proceeds from the 21-and-older event will benefit the library and the service projects of the Elizabethtown Rotary Club. Throughout all three levels of the library, attendees may sample appetizers, entrees, soups, salads, side dishes, snacks, desserts, and beverages from local restaurants, vendors, and purveyors serving the greater Elizabethtown area. Organizers Meghan Phillips and Aimee Nelson noted that several participating restaurateurs use the event to test out new recipes and food and beverage combinations that they may be considering adding to their menus or selection - giving attendees an exclusive sneak peek at what may be to come. Nelson said that this year’s event will feature some new vendors that organizers are excited about. However, plenty of fan favorites will be returning as well. “(A Taste of Western Lancaster County) has become such a tradition that we work to keep the elements that people look for like having the giant Turkey Hill cow parked in front of the building,” shared Phillips. As attendees make their way through the library, they can vote for winners in various categories, such as Best in Show, Best Dessert, and Best Appetizer. Live music will be performed by local bands on two levels of the library. “People really enjoy staying and mingling and talking,” said Nelson. “I’m always amazed by how quickly the evening goes.” A Taste of Western Lancaster County has been coined “the Elizabethtown Reunion” by many of those who attend year after year. “It gives you the opportunity to see and connect with people from the community, plus you kind of get to put faces to the food from restaurants you go to,” Phillips said. “And you get to support two great community organizations.” Tickets may be purchased at the Elizabethtown Coffee Company, located in the library; from a Rotarian; or by visiting www.eventbrite.com and searching for “2019 Taste of Western Lancaster County.” Tickets are limited, and organizers encourage people to purchase early, as tickets to last year’s event sold out well in advance. To inquire about vendor and sponsorship opportunities at A Taste of Western Lancaster County, interested individuals may email admin@etown publiclibrary.org or call the library at 717-367-7467.

This year’s conference theme will be “Awaken: Awaken to life in and with Jesus.” LIFE Conference is a gathering of the nextgeneration Alliance family that wants to experience God and expand His kingdom locally and globally. LIFE Conference seeks to glorify God in worship, word, and community; expose God’s heart for the lost; introduce Jesus Christ into the whole life of each student; and inspire students to join the global Alliance family. To inquire about contributing a pot of chili or a silent auction item for the event, readers may contact Crystal Bolton at 717755-0193 or cbolton@valleyviewcma.org.
