Library Programs Offer Something For Everyone pandemic can’t stop the Columbia Public Library or Lisa Greybill, its director. “We are trying to do the best we can under the circumstances,” she said, noting the library is open its regular hours, 10 a..m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. “We would normally have many different things going on every month, but all of that has been put on hold. We’re managing the best we can, and we are trying to come up with new activities.” While the library is open for “express visits” of 15 minutes or so for patrons to check out a book or DVD, most of its programming has shifted to a virtual format. “I’m doing read-alouds through Google Slides,” Greybill noted. “Anyone who would like a readaloud with me just needs to have a Gmail account and needs to email me, and I’ll give them access.” The library is offering virtual

Thanks to its efforts, the organization won the 2020 Outstanding Social Studies Program award from the Pennsylvania Council of Social Studies. Beginning Monday, Feb. 1, and continuing through March, the library will host a book bingo with early learning activities for children up to age 4 and reading activities for those ages 5 to 12. “Children can come into the library to get a bingo card and then once they complete five activities or read five books and get bingo, they can turn the card in for a prize,” she noted. “We will also have a drawing for a bigger prize in each age group at the end of March.” Greybill said the past year has been filled with challenges for the library, including having to cancel the Summer Reading Program that typically serves upwards of 1,800 people. “My biggest goal for the year is to be able to hold the Summer Reading Program this year,” she stated. “There’s no guarantee that will happen, but I’m praying that it will. We miss everyone, and we are looking forward to resuming all of our in-person programs as soon as we can.” For more information on any of the library’s programs, readers may visit https://columbiapubliclibrary.org.

Wrightsville Presbyterian Welcomes New Pastor
Center Wins Social Studies Award
Jesse North
When Jesse North became pastor of Wrightsville Presbyterian Church in August, he knew he was facing a challenge. Not only was the church navigating its way through changes brought on by COVID-19, but it was also North’s first appointment as a pastor. Thanks to his hard work and the passion of the congregation, the church is thriving. “I took over in the middle of a pandemic, which is a heck of a time to start,” said North of taking the helm at the church, located at

I’ve appreciated their flexibility and creativity, along with their deep values for serving other people, serving the community and being a blessing to people around them.” North said the church is doing well thanks to creative ideas such as outdoor worship during warmer months before shifting to indoor worship this fall. “We were trying our best to be together, to offer a worship opportunity for anyone,” he noted.

consultations with organizer Kala Denlinger of Simply D-Cluttered as well as a variety of cooking and wellness classes presented by Giant. Additionally, the library is still providing the career services of Tammy Garza from PA CareerLink, and registrations are currently being taken for GED classes, which will resume in person once restrictions have been lifted. Although patrons are not permitted to spend significant time in the library, Greybill noted that the library does offer free Wi-Fi, which is accessible from the outdoor terrace or nearby spaces. “People can go to Locust Park or sit on our terrace if the weather is nice, or they can sit in their cars outside the library and use the WiFi,” she said. Take-and-make crafts are available on a monthly basis, she added, with this month featuring a cardinal craft. “Children can come in and pick up a paper bag of everything they need to make a simple craft,” Greybill explained. “These are crafts that are good for ages 2 to 11.”

The program tells the story of the iron industry and its importance to Lancaster County, said David Haneman, Rivertownes PA USA president. “The county has a rich history, especially when it comes to iron furnaces, he noted. At one time, eight iron furnaces operated along a 2.5-mile stretch between Columbia and Marietta. The anthracite coal that was plentiful in eastern Pennsylvania made the county a perfect spot for these furnaces, he said, adding that iron furnaces replaced the charcoal furnaces used before the mid-1800s. Musselman-Vesta Iron Furnace Center’s building is located on the site of the original office building from the last of the local furnaces, Haneman stated, noting that it took about 10 years to restore the building. “We have a number of displays and exhibits there, he said. “We have an HO-scale
model of what the furnace complex would have looked like. It’s interesting for both students and adults to visit. Although programs are offered on a limited basis now due to COVID-19, the center regularly holds activities for school groups and the public and provides educational materials. “We have an iron furnace walking guide for people who are walking along the Northwest River Trail, Haneman said. “It’s a pocket guide, and it talks about the iron industry. That has been very popular, and we’re currently looking into getting it reprinted because we’ve given out close to 8,000 copies over the past two and a half years. Haneman said the organization learned about the social studies award last year from a board member, who suggested applying. “We sent them everything
Transit Entities Plan Merger Capital Area Transit (CAT) and rabbittransit recently announced plans to merge into a single entity to be called the Susquehanna Regional Transportation Authority. The merger is intended to provide opportunities for increased levels of mobility and result in improved efficiencies for operations. The new, joint authority will be able to leverage the buying power of a larger organization, eliminate duplicative operations, and have greater opportunity to qualify for discretionary grants. As a result, CAT and rabbittransit intend to offer enhanced services, including a single fare payment system, expanded call center hours, improved connections to large regional employers, enhanced service to regional health care programs, and enhanced connectivity between campuses for students. The merger will
help avoid a proposed 40% reduction in service at CAT, which has been struggling financially. Additionally, it is not expected to have any impact on current bus drivers or mechanics at either agency. CAT and rabbittransit noted that in 2014, transit agencies in Berks and Lancaster counties went through a similar merger. The next step in the process is for the two authorities to hold public hearings on the proposal and then adopt resolutions. The CAT board of directors is set to meet on Thursday, Jan. 28, at noon, and the rabbittransit board of directors will meet on Thursday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m. The public is invited to join by Zoom or phone. To register for the public hearing, community members may contact info@rabbittransit.org or 800-632-9063.

Thirty-two high school sophomore and junior students representing 21 York County schools kicked off the Future Leaders of York (FLY) Class of 2021 this fall with a one-day retreat. This class will be the 32nd class to graduate from the FLY program. FLY is a nine-month, experiential leadership development program. The program helps students develop their leadership skills, such as building consensus to solve problems. It also introduces them to local nonprofits and community leaders and educates them about how the community functions. The students learn about the grant-making process and award grants to area nonprofits. The class develops the field of interest, selection criteria, and process for requesting proposals. The Class of 2021 will award $5,000 in grants due to funding from York County Community Foundation and United Way of York County. Local nonprofits can apply in January, and the class will review and allocate funds based on its selection criteria.

Contactless Snow Removal Launches in Lancaster Dozens of Lancaster snow removal businesses have partnered with Lawn Love to offer a contactless, on-demand snow removal service that can be scheduled quickly and conveniently. Lancaster homeowners can now order snow removal instantly through the Lawn Love platform, using their smartphone or computer. Quotes are generated in less than two minutes using satellite imaging technology. Once the customer accepts the price, a local snow removal provider is assigned to the property. Lawn Love aims to provide a service that will have a positive impact on the lives of Lancaster homeowners and snow removal operators. By using digital technology to make the quoting and payment process contactless, customers and operators can remain socially distanced. Lawn Love’s snow removal providers are all local operators with more than one season of experience. The platform aims to offer Lancaster providers a steady stream of new customers and business management tools. In addition to one-time services, users can schedule snow removal for the entire winter, without needing to sign a contract. The company’s weather mapping software is designed to ensure that providers never miss a snow day. Lawn Love broke into the on-demand services scene in 2014. The company offers a wide range of yard services, including lawn mowing, aeration, weeding, gutter clearing, leaf removal and snow removal. The scholarships are made possible through a public-private partnership created by Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program. The scholarship donations are part of the kindergarten through 12thgrade EITC Program. EITC tuition scholarships can help to keep students in their schools and allow new families the financial help to choose the best school to fit their family’s changing needs. Students attending the following local schools will benefit from the tuition scholarships: Christian School of York, Holy Trinity Catholic School, Red Lion Christian School, St. Joseph School and York Catholic High School. Pastor from pg 1 Then, new restrictions and rising COVID-19 numbers prompted the church to shift to online worship. When his 16-year-old son was diagnosed with COVID-19, North said he got to see the heart of the church members in a personal way. “My family experienced this loving congregation firsthand,” he noted. “They just flooded our house with meals. We felt supported and loved.” At Christmastime, the church continued to find creative ways to worship, including holding an outdoor Christmas Eve service in the pouring rain. “It was a 10-minute service. We held glow sticks instead of candles, and it really rained hard, but people still showed up,” North said. The church is currently providing Sunday worship at
10 a.m. on its YouTube channel and Bible study via Zoom at noon on Wednesdays. Starting this month, it will offer online Communion as well. “We are going to try this,” North said. “We’re asking members to gather the elements at home and set up a Communion table of sorts.” North, who worked for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship for 22 years prior to coming to Wrightsville Presbyterian, said he’s been nothing but impressed by the congregation and its desire not only to help others, but also to support one

another. “Everybody says it must be so hard to be a new pastor (who started in) 2020, and it is hard,” he stated. “There are some people in our congregation who I haven’t even ever seen their faces. ... But I’m getting to know the depth of this congregation in other ways. People are doing their best with what we have. They are not complaining. It’s really been amazing to come in and be a part of this church. God is in this, even though we’re in this miserable time. God is with us.”

Building For The Future
Plans call for Lancaster Catholic High School to build a new STEM center (left photo) and performing arts center (right photo).
BY ANN MEAD ASH
As Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) prepares to start construction on a new STEM Innovation Center, Phase 1A of the largest remodel effort in the school’s more than 90-year history, school president Tim Hamer is looking forward to equipping the building to match the curriculum.
“The once-in-a-lifetime rebuilding was informed by what we need to do to teach what we want to teach,” said Hamer. LCHS chose Marotta/ Main Architects to design the remodel after holding a competition. “The beauty of this (plan) is the efficiency of being within the existing footprint of the school,” said Hamer. “We are repurposing space.” The renovation, which will also include a Student Commons and din-
ing hall and a performing arts center, has its roots in the school’s strategic plan. “ We needed to modernize the facility to offer students 21st-century learning tools,” explained Hamer. “That was the priority of our student plan.” A feasibility survey of the LCHS community was part of the research. “(We asked) what were the top priorities, and the answer was interesting,” Hamer shared. “Exactly 50% thought that
building a fine and performing arts facility and auditorium and modernizing the cafeteria was a top priority,” said Hamer. “The other 50% thought that modernizing our STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) facilities was a priority.” Hamer noted that the request for STEM facilities fit well with curricular changes the school was already making. “ We are rewriting our entire curriculum simultaneously with the strategic plan,” said Hamer,
school.” Hamer noted that a triangular courtyard that exists where the three wings of the school join together will be filled in and connected to the school library. “That is where the cafeteria and Student Commons will be moved so we can make room for the auditorium.” Through its Cherish Love - Honor campaign, LCHS has raised nearly $9 million of the initial $12 million needed for the renovations. Hamer emphasized that no funds will be borrowed for the project. “This (plan) is far less expensive than the alternatives, and it allows for a better flow and use of space,” he said, noting that the present building represents eras of construction that were decades apart. “This is a way to meld them together. It’s very exciting.” To learn more about the building campaign, readers may visit www.cherishlove honor.com.
YCCF Grant To Support Merger In an ongoing effort to create a uniform EMS system that provides high-quality service to all areas of York County, the WellSpan Emergency Services Fund of York County Community Foundation (YCCF) has awarded a grant of $337,000 to three local nonprofit EMS providers to create efficiencies and optimize service delivery. The three organizations in the project, York Regional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Inc., Grantley Fire Company, and West York Ambulance, are combining to create First Capital Community Transport Partners. The grant is the second grant to the newly formed organization and provides resources for professional services needed to get the new organization up and running including legal, accounting, information technology, and branding support. It also supports the purchase of a new emergen-

who noted that LCHS will equip the center based on a STEM curriculum designed by leading educators called Project Lead the Way. “These are experientially based curricula for biomedicine, computer science, and engineering,” he said. The STEM Innovation Center, which will replace the third floor of Riley Hall, is slated to be under construction before students leave school in May. The new auditorium, which will replace the 1929 gym currently being used for presentations, and the Student Commons and dining area, which will replace the cafeteria built in 1974, will be Phase 1B, with construction scheduled for the summer of 2022. “We will be using the space that is now the cafeteria, which has no floor over it,” said Hamer. “We will build the auditorium there because we can go up and stay within the footprint of the
cy vehicle and medical equipment so that First Capital EMS can provide care for approximately 75,000 residents of West York, Spring Garden, York Township, and Yoe. The creation of First Capital Community Transport Partners is the first step toward regionalizing and coordinating the provision of emergency and medical transportation services. York Regional EMS, Grantley Fire Company, and West York Ambulance have been in discussions about coordination and consolidation for the past six years to create the foundation on which a sustainable, broadbased, uniform EMS system could be established. With the grant from the WellSpan Emergency Services Fund, the three nonprofit organizations seek to create an organization that is viable, high-quality, and nimble to react to and resolve service area challenges now and in the future. Jane M. Conover, president & CEO of YCCF, noted that the WellSpan Emergency Services Fund previously provided funding to the Southern York County EMS,
making the new grant the second municipal strategic alliance to be supported by the fund since its creation in 2014. Rod Draw baugh is the president of First Capital Community Transport Partners. He shared the details of the project funded by the grant and the next steps in the merger of the three organizations at a press conference on Dec. 1. Established by WellSpan Health with the goal of creating a more coordinated, regional EMS system that effectively meets the needs of York County communities, the WellSpan Emergency Services Fund provides grants for purposes such as professional services, startup resources, and the development of new and innovative collaborative projects in order to meet the emergency medical needs of the community. Since its inception, the fund has awarded more than $500,000 in grants. More information can be found at www.yccf.org. CARDS OF THANKS PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT. You who made me see everything and showed me the way to reach my ideal, You who gives me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and You who are in all instances, of my life, with me, I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great material desires may be.
