Braving The Cold For A Polar Plunge By Chelsea Peifer
It takes a special person to willingly run into the frigid waters of the Susquehanna River in February, but year after year the York County Polar Plunge draws a sizeable crowd of willing “plungers” as the participants are affectionately dubbed. The 11th annual York County Polar Plunge is set to take place from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, along the Susquehanna River in front of John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St., Wrightsville. Not only are folks willing to dip into the waters amidst sometimes freezing temperatures, but many also go all out
and participate in the annual costume contest. “Last year the winner of the most original (costume) was a tree,” recalled organizer Robyn Liggins-Smith, adding that the costume contest is her favorite portion of the event. “We have superheroes, ballet dancers, swimsuits, Hawaiian dancers, Where’s Waldo … just about anything you can think of has joined in the costume contest,” Liggins-Smith shared. York Revolution mascot DownTown joins the fun each year by helping to entertain the crowd, going so far as to actually plunge in his costume. Another staple is the team that starts the waves of

The EYRA became a reality due to the successful completion of a Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DNCR) Bureau of Recreation and Conservation Peer-toPeer Technical Assistant Project. This project helped EYRA with the tasks necessary to begin its operations. By submitting a successful Circuit Rider grant application to DCNR, the organization was able to recruit and hire a full-time parks and recreation director. Cirilo, a certified parks and recreation professional (CPRP), was hired as the first director in mid-November. Servant Stage will kick off the new year with concert titled “A Million Dreams: Songs of Inspiration.” The original revue will showcase vocals, tight harmonies, and original arrangements of a wide variety of uplifting songs, ranging from Broadway and pop tunes to sacred songs and spirituals. “It’s a diverse program, but each song has an encouraging or inspirational theme,” said Servant Stage executive director Johnathan Bauer. “This is a great show to beat the winter blues. The arrangements, vocals, and harmonies are just exquisite, and the costumes are gorgeous.” The cast includes Lancaster performers Ric Zimmerman, Sarah Poague, and Kat Prickett as featured vocalists, with Kayla Klase as female vocalist - swing. Zimmerman directed the vocals, with original arrangements and musical direction from Andy Roberts. Roberts and Scott Williams take turns as accompanist for the show, which is directed by Servant Stage’s artistic director, Wally Calderon. “Audiences will love the amazing vocal blend of the trio, as well as the individuality of each singer,” said Prickett. “Finding voices that blend so tightly is not an easy task. Will winter continue for six more weeks, or will Pennsylvania have an early spring? That is the question that noted prognosticator Octorara Orphie will answer at the 111th Groundhog Day celebration on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge of Quarryville, 248 White Rock Road, Quarryville. Following the traditions that have been set for more than a century, the festivities will be held outdoors, beginning at 8:15 a.m. with a ceremonial parade from the covered bridge over the Octorara Creek. The creek will play a role later in the ceremony, as the members of the Baby Class of 2019 will be inducted into the prophetic world of arctomanciferial predictification - as the Lodge calls it - when one of them is dunked in the frigid water, among other rituals. Contrary to their name, the “babies” are fully grown men. They include Dain Carson of Columbia, Mark Hadesty of Strasburg, Joseph Paterson of Holtwood, Michael Rutt of Quarryville, and Thomas Waltman of New Providence. “I have been a guest at many lodge functions and have developed some very good friendships, and (I) wish to continue that,” Hadesty remarked. “Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been intrigued by the lodge sitting atop the hill of the West Branch of the Octorara Creek, the stream in which I spent most of my childhood days and still do,” Rutt added. “I feel it would be an honor to be a member of

Youth group leader Joe Bachman, event organizer, emphasized that the eighth annual event is open to couples as well as individuals. “It’s for anybody,” he stated. “Our hope and prayer is to allow couples and singles to enjoy a great meal and dance or just listen to Modern Age. They play music from the ’70s to the present. They began as a group in the ’70s and have established quite a following.” There is no admission fee, but a freewill offering will be received. “We began asking for freewill donations instead of money for tickets because we felt that there are those that would enjoy a great evening out and maybe couldn’t afford a lot,” Bachman explained. “There are others who are fortunate enough to give us a little more. It always balances out, and it works well for us. We just want to provide a community event where people can have a good time.” Bachman said the event is ideal for adults of all ages, including senior citizens. “My mom, who is a widow, enjoys coming,” he said. “There are people there to fellowship with and she gets to talk with old friends. That’s what it’s all about - coming together.” Donations will be used to benefit the YYR’s 2019 mission trip. “The Sweetheart Dinner/Dance is our largest fundraiser for our mission work in Racine, Wisconsin,” Bachman explained, noting that in the summer of 2018

youth groups from many different states came to the Hellam, Wrightsville and Red Lion areas to help out in the local community. “One youth group brought 50 young people from Wisconsin. They brought a tour bus that was seen all through our community that week dropping youths off to work in our neighborhood. This summer we would love to return the favor and help those folks in Wisconsin.” Bachman said that members of the YYR volunteer with Group Workcamps Foundation, a Christian youth mission trip organization. More information about the organization is available at https://groupmissiontrips.com. “Everything we do in our group is about community service. Knights Trounce Susquehannock For 11th Win by Eric Pyles
All fans, deep down, know that when their team is rolling and on a winning streak that it will eventually come to an end. When that moment inevitably comes, those fans hope their team bounces right back to start another winning streak. Fans of the Eastern York boy’s hoops team saw their squad follow the perfect script after seeing their five-game run snapped with a January 10th loss to Lampeter-Strasburg. The Golden Knights bounced right back, picking up win number 11 on the season four nights later with a 79-41 trouncing of Susquehannock. Behind six long range bombs and 20 points from Stephen Wisler, Eastern York jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The Golden Knights posted identical 18-6 scoring edges in the first and fourth quarters to account for the bulk 38-point winning margin. The remaining 14 points was split evenly between the second and third quarters with Eastern holding a 22-15 edge in the second and a 21-14 edge in the third for the 79-41 final. Demonte Martin added 18 points and eight rebounds while Trevor Seitz chipped in with 14 points and seven assists. The Golden Knights made it two in a row on January 16th with a 66-53 victory over York Suburban. This time it was the long-range bombing of Kade Wiley that paced the Eastern attack. The senior connected on four ‘three-balls’ on his way to a team high 20 points. Seitz added 13 points and Bryce Henise 14 points which helped Eastern York control all four quarters on their way to the 13-point victory. To start the new winning streak the Golden Knights first had to suffer a 75-66 road loss to Lampeter-Strasburg on the
10th. This time it was Seitz taking team high honors thanks to his 20-point effort but that effort was offset by L-S’s Adam Stolzfus who also netted 20 points. Eastern was able to hang with the Pioneers through the opening frame, sending the two sides into the second knotted at 16-16. It was in that second quarter where things started to get away from the Golden Knights. Lampeter-Strasburg was able to outscore Eastern 14-9 in the quarter to take a 30-25 into the break. The offensive struggles carried over into the third quarter where Lampeter-Strasburg enjoyed a 21-12 edge to push their lead to 51-37 with just eight minutes remaining. The Golden Knights were able to get back on track in the fourth, posting a 29-24 edge, but it was not enough to overcome their earlier struggles. Martin added 14 points and Dustin Cunningham 10 points to back up Seitz. With the 2-1 stretch the Golden Knights are now 12-3 overall and 7-1 in YAIAA Division II play. Eastern’s stellar overall mark has them sitting second in the unofficial D-34A power rankings while their 7-1 YAIAA mark has them in a first-place tie with West York in the division pecking order. WRESTLING The wrestling team experienced both sides of the winloss aspect of sports with the highlight being a 54-24 victory over Northeastern. “That was a good win for us. It was a divisional win and I had some guys stepping up nicely,” said head coach Dan Garner. The Golden Knights claimed nine of the 14 matches with five coming via quick Bobcat forfeits. Isaac Wherley (106), Justin Manganello (138), Nathan Robbins (152), Jacob Doyle (160) and Neijon Gonzalez (170) were the beneficiaries of those forfeits and picked up the easy

wins with the Robbins, Doyle, Gonzalez trifecta closing out the match. Eastern York gave one of those forfeits back at 113 but four straight pinfall victories to open the match, coupled with Wherley’s forfeit win, had already provided Eastern with a 30-0 cushion. Nick Spotts posted the first of those pinfall wins, taking out Quinton Einsig at the 1:43 mark of their 182-pound clash. Isaac Buser followed and needed 60 seconds longer than Spotts to dispatch his 195-pound foe, Kevin Almond. Drake Brown finished up Evi Garcia at the 1:41 mark of their 220-pound bout while Nicholas Hess needed just 48 seconds to end his heavyweight match with Tyler Webb. The Golden Knights ended up on the opposite sides of things in their January 15th match with York Suburban. “We knew it was going to be a tough match going in,” stated Garner. “They are much improved this year.” Eastern managed just five victories in the 41-28 loss that put the Golden Knights at 7-10 overall and 1-3 in Division II matches. Magnus Kissinger accounted for one of those five wins, kicking off the match by pinning Brock Ahrens just past the one-minute mark of their 182-pound match. Eastern’s 6-0 lead quickly turned into a 35-6 deficit with seven straight Trojans wins. Manganello and Jonah Dougherty broke up that Suburban run while earning the first of four straight Golden Knight wins with back-to-back forfeits at 138 and 145. Robbins followed with a 16-2 major decision win over Josh Raffensburger that was nearly a tech fall according to Garner. Gonzalez closed out the four-match run with a crazy quick pinfall win over Moustafa Elhasany at 160-pounds. A final York Suburban win at 170 put the final at 41-28. “We had some good positives in the match but we just came up a little bit short, unfortunately,” summed Garner. Eastern was able to keep things much closer in the remaining three quarters, holding the Lady Warriors to just a 44-34 edge for the 63-38 final. Mara Weaver paced Eastern with 13 points with Cass Arnold the only other Lady Golden Knights in double figures with 10. Addy Malone added nine points while Morgan Winter (three points), Victoria Zerbe (two points) and Lily Campbell (one point) finished things up on the offensive end. Eastern York’s eighth straight victory came on January 11th with a 57-43 win over Northeastern. “I thought we played pretty well,” Weaver stated. This time it was Amanda Galentine finishing with 13 points which not only was a team high but also checked in as a game high tally as well. The Lady Golden Knights controlled all but the second quarter where the Lady Bobcats held a 12-9 advantage that made it 22-19 at halftime. Eastern regained control in the third with a 17-7 spurt that pushed their lead to 13-points while a near draw in the fourth made it a 57-43 final. Malone and Breana Grim joined Galentine in the double-digit club with 11 and 10 points respectively. With the loss to Susquehannock ending Eastern York’s winning streak on the January 14, the Lady Golden Knights needed to wait two days to begin working on a Staff photo new streak. LCSR is a chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR), which is an association comprised of members who are retired employees of public schools of Pennsylvania. In addition to the grants, the organization awards two $1,000 educational scholarships to graduating seniors each year. The organization also has a “Little Red Schoolhouse” program that provides free books to children. Another focus in its mission is to visit, send cards, and provide small gifts of love to more than 40 members who are older, ailing, or unable to get out and around. plungers, which is made up of current and retired police officers from throughout York County and led by Lt. Dan Aikey of the York County Police Department. Registration and sign-in will open at 9:30 a.m., followed by opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. and the costume parade and contest at 10:45 a.m. Awards will be given for the best costume and most original costume. Plungers will begin assembling in waves around 11:45 a.m., and the plunge will start at noon. Special Olympics PA York County (SOYC) athletes will lead each wave of participants to the river. Plungers may dip in just a toe or go all in for a total of three minutes. Heated tents will be set up for participants to change into dry clothes afterward. Coffee, hot chocolate, water, and snacks will also be available. To register in advance - which organizers recommend for anyone interested in avoiding waiting in long lines - as an individual or a team, readers may visit w w w. s p e c i a l o l y m p i c s y o r k county.org. “There is no cost to register - everyone and anyone can plunge,” explained LigginsSmith. “However, this is a fundraiser, so we ask that you get sponsors.” Participants who raise at least $25 will receive a T-shirt, and those who raise at least $100 will receive a hooded sweatshirt. Golden Plunger
awards - which are actually golden plungers - are given to the individual and the team that have raised the most money. All proceeds will support the 360 athletes of the SOYC, which provides year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The Polar Plunge helps to ensure that all training and competition opportunities will continue to be provided free of charge to the SOYC athletes and their families. The 15 sports programs are supported by hundreds of volunteers and contributions from the community. Anyone who would like to contribute toward SOYC without taking a dip in the icy cold river is welcome to donate at the aforementioned website or to attend as a chicken plunger someone who supports the plunge but does not go into the water. The infamous chicken dance, set for 11:15 a.m., will be performed by all of the chicken plungers in attendance. Liggins-Smith said that last year’s 10th anniversary Polar Plunge raised a total of $76,000 for SOYC. “The weather was actually nice, if you consider 34 degrees nice, and that was the air temperature,” recalled Liggins-Smith. “The water temperature was about 21 degrees.” Nevertheless, approximately 750 plungers stepped up to - or into - the challenge.
