“Our fastnachts are artisan. … They’re a special treat.” Over the several weeks of the sale, hundreds of volunteers will create the fastnachts, and the organizers are always looking for additional help. “We especially need help with rolling,” said Mahan. “There’s a certain way you roll, and if they are not rolled right, everything

goes downhill.” She noted that no experience is necessary to volunteer. “There are people here who have been doing this for a long time, and they’ll teach volunteers,” she said. “It’s on-the-job training.” Shifts begin as early as 4 a.m., but help is particularly needed beginning about 7:30 or 8 a.m. “You don’t have to commit for a long shift,” Mahan said. “You can come for an hour or two.” Committee member K aren Sahd oversees volunteers who come in the night before each bake to prep the dough using the 100-year-old recipe. Resch estimates that volunteers will make 6,300 dozen fastnachts this year - or more than 75,000. “That puts it in perspective, 75,000,” he said. “You could fill See Fastnacht pg 3

It’s just like stars - each one is unique.” Holy Trinity will host its 100th annual fastnacht bake beginning Monday, Feb. 12. The sale will continue on Tuesday, Feb. 13, and on Mondays and Wednesdays for the next four weeks, wrapping up on Wednesday, March 13. “We call them ‘a little bite of heaven,’” said committee member Paul Resch. Added committee member Jim Knapp, “They’re so good. They

are different than doughnuts because they are made with potato and yeast. We fry them in vegetable oil, and then we serve them by the dozen, plain or glazed.”

Joe Bachman believes adults are l o o k i n g fo r c o n nections. “ We all need help through life,” said the youth group leader from Wrightsville. You don’t need to come to everything. You can pick and choose what you want to do, but the more people who are in our group, the more people who can participate when we go out into the community.” Evolve meets on the last Sunday of the month from 5 to 6:30 p.m. as well as on the se cond Wednesday of the month, when the group meets at a local restaurant for food, fun and fellowship. Every three months, the group participates in a community service project. The Sunday meetings are currently held at Bachman’s house, but the group is quickly outgrowing the space, so he’s considering other options. Although Evolve is faithbased, it is not a religious organization, Bachman emphasized. “ We have people of many different denominations who are part of this,” he said. “We want to be an organization in the community doing o u t re ac h a n d s u p p o r t to organizations that already exist.” In the past few months, the group members have supported organizations, including Servants Inc. and Unto and have participated in out-

Resch noted that the fastnacht bakes are always fun, with camaraderie and fellowship shared among generations. “I’m always impressed by the students from OLA and Lancaster Catholic who come here before school to help,” he said. The committee members reminded people to order early because the fastnachts always sell out. “Our fastnachts are artisan,” Sahd said. “I think that’s why they are popular, because they’re not available all the time. The Columbia Tree Society, the fundraising auxiliary for the Columbia Borough Shade Tree Commission, has begun its annual membership drive for 2024. Membership dues enable the Shade Tree Commission to purchase and maintain street trees in the borough. Over the last 33 years, the Shade Tree Commission has planted approximately 950 trees in the community and has maintained street trees. For its work, the organization has received the National Arbor Day Foundation’s “ Tree City USA” designation for 33 consecutive years. The Columbia Borough Shade Tree Commission strives to encourage street tree plantings as well as tree planting in yards, parks, and public places, as trees retain large volumes of rainfall, thereby reducing and cleansing runoff. Students from Lancaster Bible College’s Music, Worship and Performing Arts Department will present “Tuck Everlasting: The Musical” in Good Shepherd Chapel on the college’s campus at 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. Shows will take place at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Jan. 26 and Feb. 2, and at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Jan. 27 and Feb. 3. “Tuck Everlasting: The Musical,” based on the American children’s novel by Natalie Babbitt, features music by Chris Miller, lyrics by Nathan Tysen and a book by Claudia Shear and Tim Federle, with direction and choreography by Casey Nicholaw. The musical premiered at Atlanta’s Alliance Theater in 2015 and opened on Broadway in April 2016. Alexis Bledel and Jonathan Jackson starred in the film version in 2002.

“Tuck Everlasting” begins in Treegap, N.H., where each character shares his or her deepest desires. Central character Winnie Foster, played by Elsa Rogers, a junior music performance major from Columbia, yearns for a life of adventure beyond her white picket fence, but it is not until she becomes entwined with the Tuck family that she gets more adventure than she could have imagined. When Winnie learns of the magic behind the Tucks’ everlasting youth, she must fight to protect their secret from those who would do anything for a chance at eternal life. As her adventure unfolds, Winnie faces a choice return to her life or continue with the Tucks on their infinite journey. To purchase tickets, visit www.lbc.edu/events.
