Model Train Display from pg 1 timepieces. The LSVMR display will allow the museum to honor the significance of railroads in the history of horology and provide a visual and auditory experience for its visitors. The LSVMR is a group of O-gauge enthusiasts from the lower Susquehanna Valley region of Pennsylvania. The group originated in July 2009 when some customers and employees of CoolTrains Toys and Hobbies in Salunga came together to form the LSVMR, and the group has since expanded. “One of the nice things about our club is that we are just a group of people who share a mutual love of trains,” shared LSVMR president Travis Moody. “Unlike other clubs, we do not model any specific location or era. Everything we do is for the fun of the hobby, which is why you will see all kinds of different things on our layout. From carnivals to Lego towns to the drivein movie theater, no two setups
are the same, often captivating the imagination of many children. All our trains are memberowned, so there’s always something new rolling by.” LSVMR members look forward to showing off their model train layouts to visitors to the National Watch and Clock Museum from Feb. 2 to March 2. There is no museum charge to view the railroad display. From December through March, the museum’s hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. From April through November, the museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the museum is also open on Mondays. Eastern York Boys’ Sweep York Tech by Eric Pyles
If the old showbiz saying that sequels are never as good as the original is true, don’t tell the Eastern York boys’ basketball team. After a 66-64 win over York Tech on January 21st, the Golden Knights second win over the Spartans this season, the hoopsters from Wrightsville are perfectly fine with this sequel. As you might expect with a two-point final, the game was close throughout with plenty of runs and counter-runs by both sides. “One of the most interesting games I’ve even been a part of. We trailed from the start and played from behind and didn’t take our first lead until I believe 38 seconds left in the game,” said Eastern’s head coach Justin Seitz. “The kids kept their composure, kept together and also made plays late in the game to finally get that lead and held on until the final horn went off.” As Seitz mentioned, his squad trailed for the majority of the game thanks largely to a 22-15 deficit over the initial eight minutes of action. The deficit grew to nine points at the break as Eastern struggled to find their offense, scoring just nine points in the second quarter. The Golden Knights made some adjustments at halftime that resulted in a 27-20 run through the third quarter, making it a 53-51 game with just one frame remaining. ed Eastern’s upset bid with a 6-4 scoring edge in the overtime period to escape with a 45-43 victory. “We were up but just couldn’t finish it,” said Weaver. “Our girls played very well.” As you would expect from an overtime game the teams were back and forth through regulation. KD opened with a 14-7 run over the initial eight minutes with Eastern answering with a big run of their own. The 13-5 second quarter edge gave the visiting Lady Golden Knights a slim one-point lead at halftime. That lead was erased with Kennard-Dale’s 12-9 advantage in the third only to see Eastern York post a 10-8 fourth quarter edge to force OT. Addy Malone scored half of Eastern’s overtime points to finish with a game high 16 while Mara Weaver added seven points in the loss. Both Amanda Galentine and Breana Grim chipped in with six-point games. Eastern York got back to winning on January 22nd with a 47-42 take down of Gettysburg. After finding themselves in a 13-11 hole after the opening frame the Lady Golden Knights took control of the game in the second quarter. An 11-1 run in the frame flipped that two-point deficit into a 22-14 halftime lead and Eastern never looked back. Eastern kept their foot on the gas through the third with Cass Arnold leading the way. Arnold, who finished with a game high 13 points, scored five of Eastern’s 13 third quarter points to help push the lead to 16 points with just eight minutes remaining. The Lady Warriors closed the game with a 21-12 run to shrink Eastern York’s final margin down to five but the Lady Golden Knights were able to hang on for the win. “I thought this was our most complete game. Overall, defensively the best I’ve ever seen us play, and rebounding, I was real happy,” commented Weaver. The Lady Golden Knights made it two in a row one night later with a 73-55 thrashing of Bermudian Springs. Eastern York outscored the Lady Eagles in all four quarters including a 20-12 opening frame that set the tone for the remainder of the contest. Arnold led the 10 Eastern York players that scored with a game high 21 points while Weaver’s hard hat winner for the game, Morgan Winter, finished with 14 points on four three-pointers and two made free throws.

Tech 15-11 in the fourth, to secure the two-point victory. Demonte Martin dropped a team high 21 while Kade Wiley added 12 points to aid the effort. “To be able to get a win in a game like that, it makes us more battle tested and will prepare us for games whether in counties or potentially states,” said Seitz. “If we are able to make a run, in a game like that in that atmosphere with that much adversity, to be able to stay together will help us going forward.” One day later, the Golden Knights found themselves battling the Warriors of Gettysburg in another tight one. Eastern was able slip out of town with a 56-46 victory by leaning on its defense. “It was a defensive battle early, our focus going into the game was on the defensive end,” Seitz said. “We know we can score and put a good amount of points on the board so the main focus was on defense. So going into half with only 19 points but still being up five shows that our kids were ready, they were prepared and were really focusing on the defensive end,” commented Seitz. Eastern York was able to stretch that five-point halftime lead by two with a 17-15 edge in the third and set the final margin at 10-points by posting a 20-17 edge in the final stanza. Trevor Seitz netted a game high 17 to lead the way but Wiley’s 15 points and Martin’s 13 points provided plenty of back-up. The Golden Knights managed to post a comfortable win over Kennard-Dale on January 18th, blowing by the Rams to the tune of 73-53. “We put ourselves in a good spot that game,” said Seitz. “We came out early and had a real nice first half, and shared the ball extremely well.” Bryce Henise paced an offensive attack that won three of the four quarters with only a 20-15 setback in the third keeping Eastern from a clean whistle to whistle run. Henise added 17 rebounds to his team high 15 points while Trevor Seitz (13 points and eight assists) and Wiley (12 points) gave Eastern York three players in double digits for the game. With the Gettysburg win, the Golden Knights improve to 15-3 on the year and 9-1 in Division II action. It also marks the third time this year that Eastern has posted a five-game winning streak. “We’ve been talking about that as a team,” said Seitz. “Every time that we’ve been knocked down, we’ve been able to get right back up and move on, not dwell on a loss but focus on the next game.” The triple pack of five gamers has pushed the Golden Knights to second in the unofficial District 3-4A rankings with just four regular season games remaining. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL As the end of January quickly approaches fans of high school basketball teams turn their attention to overall records and where their favorite squad sits in the most up to date district rankings. Fans of the Eastern York girls’ basketball team like what they see when they gaze at the unofficial District 3-4A rankings. Sporting a 12-7 overall record has the Lady Golden Knights perched in the fifth spot of those 4A rankings with just three regular season games remaining. “I tell people, we have probably the hardest schedule in York County overall, we played the top teams,” said head coach Brad Weaver, “We try to schedule the toughest teams we can find. So, we are 12-7 but we’ve had some really highquality wins.” Of course, Weaver’s squad does have seven losses with the most recent coming in overtime on January 18th. Thompson, who became executive director in May, has identified several challenges Power Packs faces going forward. Among these are the need for volunteers, the need to add food sourcing resources, and the ability to provide nutritious food that can be utilized by families from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Volunteers are needed both at the Power Packs warehouse, located on Walnut Street in Lancaster, and at the schools and other sites where food is distributed. “We need volunteer drivers to deliver food to schools, and we need volunteers at the schools for packing,” said Thompson, who noted that because of a rotating schedule, volunteers can serve as little as once a month. She added that certain volunteer positions can be physically demanding. Volunteers who work at the warehouse or drive vans should be agile and able to lift up to 40 pounds. At the school sites, packing the bags is not as physically demanding. Thompson said that she has special appreciation for the organization’s volunteer base. “We are trying to grow our volunteer base and learn from the volunteers who have been with us for many years,” she stated. Finding food that is nutritious, rather than processed or high in sugars, is always a challenge for Power Packs, according to Thompson. “We would love to have more connections for food sourcing,” said Thompson, who noted that tortilla shells and fresh fruits and vegetables like broccoli, green peppers, bananas, grapes, and oranges are on her wish list. Thompson said that the organization is aware of the ethnic and cultural diversity of the population it serves and that steps are being taken to meet those specific needs. “We are learning about those families

and what they eat,” she said. “We have to source foods that are different. We need rice, and we need foods that are kosher (or) if (a family doesn’t) eat meat, how do we (meet) their (nutritional) needs with foods they will eat? We want to make sure we send home food families will recognize and try to cook and eat.” In addition to working with school social workers to learn how to better educate and empower families, Power Packs has partnered with a team at Georgetown University for a research project focused on the importance of nutrition in early childhood development. “ We are looking forward to having our program evaluated and really learning,” said Thompson. Thompson comes to the position with experience in both food service and directing nonprofit organizations. She oversaw St. Joseph’s Children’s Health Foundation and also worked at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, Md. During that time, she ran a catering service and sold gourmet soups. In 2010, she realized her dream of owning a café in Lancaster, a place she called “homey and comfortable” that was open for nearly five years. Power Packs’ signature fundraiser is a spring Stay-atHome Gala, which encourages families to stay home and donate the funds they would have used to attend an event. This year, the organization took part in the Extraordinary Give in November, ranking in the top 25 recipients by raising nearly $75,000. Power Packs welcomes both online and traditional donations year-round. Readers who would like to learn more about the program or sign up to volunteer may visit the organization’s redesigned website at www.powerpacksproject.org.

“We have given out $350,000,” said John Mullineaux of the Lancaster Bicycle Club (LBC). “The single biggest (amount) was for municipal and EMS (emergency medical services) bike patrols. We’ve purchased bicycles and equipment (for those organizations).” Mullineaux added that Lancaster police and police stations in a number of county boroughs have received
funds from the club to purchase bikes. LBC is currently seeking applicants so that the club can give away another $25,000 in grants. Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and schools. The application form may be found at https://lancasterbikeclub.net/grant -program. Completed applications are due to the club by Friday, Feb. 15. “It is a simple application process,” said Mullineaux. “We ask for a short
Over the years, the types of requests that have been granted have varied. “We have spent money on bicycle advocacy,” recalled Mullineaux. “We have spent more than $30,000 on bicycle racks.” Mullineaux said many bicycle racks seen in Lancaster city and around the county were provided by the club. The club has also purchased road signs and bicycles for elementary school gym classes that were used to teach bicycle safety. Mullineaux said that one of the most unusual awards was to the mural project at the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail near Columbia. A part of the 250-foot-long mural will show a bicycle rider on the trail. In addition to the $25,000 grants, LBC also donates $5,000 to the county to help defray costs of maintaining covered bridges and $5,000 to HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, for student scholarships. The scholarship program grew out of the 450-member club’s annual Covered Bridge Ride. The ride, which dates back 40 years, was originally just for club members. “We expanded (the ride) to include visitors because of the great place Lancaster County is,” said Mullineaux. Originally, the intention of the ride was to raise funds to augment the club’s budget, but in the 1990s, Bicycling magazine listed the ride as the best in Pennsylvania. “Attendance exploded,” said Mullineaux. “One year, we hit 4,000 (riders).” The ride is now restricted to 2,300 participants. It begins at the HACC Lancaster campus, 1641 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster. Several routes will be offered. The 62-mile metric century route will head north to New Holland, Farmersville, Terre Hill, and Reamstown, before turning south to return to HACC. Seven covered bridges will be part of the route. Additional routes include a 31-mile course with four covered bridges and a 15-mile ride with two covered bridges. One option adds a loop at Stevens that travels 32 difficult miles for riders who wish to complete a more challenging ride.

description of what they will do (with the funds) and how much they want.” Mullineaux said that the application form also asks what the organization will do if it does not receive the grant. “I pull all the applications together and do a presentation for the board, and they (usually) vote up or down,” said Mullineaux, who added that sometimes the amount of the grant request is modified by the group. Those receiving grants must initiate their projects during the 2019 calendar year. The grants were first given in 1990.

The Memory Loss Support Group for Caregivers will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 5, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Community Room at Mount Joy Mennonite Church, 320 Musser Road, Mount Joy. Dr. Ken Brubaker will discuss “The Seven Stages of Memory Loss.”
“He’d love it,” answered Sharon. “He would have probably had a parade,” added Shonk. Kerry Meyers, Chamber coordinator, described it as “just a fun community event.” “The amount of people that we have out here sometimes, it’s a lot of people for as cold as it is,” Meyers added. “Everyone’s
usually in a good spirit. And the hats just keep getting funnier every year, and more of them.” As in years past, hat-wearing fun-lovers will gather at the town clock starting at 6:45 a.m. As the sun rises, lots of noise will be made to lure Minnie out of her tree trunk, with the hope that, unlike last year, she will predict an early spring. Refreshments, including coffee, hot chocolate and cookies, will be provided by the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185 and a local business. In the case of inclement weather, festivities will take place under the portico of Union Community Bank, 101 E. Main St. For more information, readers may visit www.mountjoychamber.com or contact Shonk at 717-989-6452 or Meyers at the Chamber at 717-653-0773.

certificates from the Chamber, which can be spent at downtown businesses. Last year, Minnie even donned a Philadelphia Eagles football helmet. “Last year she also predicted the Super Bowl winner, too,” stated Hackman, referring to the Eagles’ 2018 championship. So, what would the late Myers think of the event today?
R029258
In the 10 years that Mount Joy Minnie has been popping up out of her tree stump on Feb. 2 to predict either a welcome early spring or six more blasted weeks of winter, the groundhog has been correct eight out of 10 times, according to Minnie’s “handler,” Nancy Shonk. With Groundhog Day 2019 fast approaching, Minnie and her posse - members of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce recently gathered to promote this year’s event, scheduled for the usual early hour of 7 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Rotary Clock, located at East Main Street and Marietta Avenue in Mount Joy. This reporter wanted to know: Does the magnificent marmot have a secret to her impressive 80 percent success rate? Minnie remained mum - she was, after all, rudely roused from her hibernation for this publicity gig. And Shonk was not about to spill any secrets. “She just has that feeling,” Shonk said. “She’s competing with the big boys, so she has to be pretty accurate.”
The “big boys” are, of course, the famous Punxsutawney Phil and Lancaster County’s own Octorara Orphie, who rarely agree on a winter forecast. Minnie was Lancaster County’s first (and only) female groundhog, thanks to the vision of the late Bob Myers, an eccentric, fun-loving Mount Joy businessman who hosted Minnie’s first Groundhog Day appearance in 2008. After Myers died unexpectedly in July 2008, the festivities were put on hold the following February. But in 2010, Shonk, then the Chamber’s executive director, got permission from Myers’ widow, Sharon, to restart the quirky event. It has been held every year since, at times drawing up to 100 people, including families with children, according to Shonk. For those readers who are still wondering: No, Minnie is not a flesh-and-blood groundhog; she’s a puppet that lives in a tree stump made of chicken wire and papier-mache. But some confusion is understandable. Take Carl Hackman Jr., Chamber president, who admitted, “It took me three years to figure out she wasn’t real.” (Oh, but her powers are real, very real indeed.) About four years ago, a crazy hat contest was added to the fun, since Minnie herself sports a sprightly spring bonnet. Winners get Mount Joy Money gift
