Serving Up Hope BY CATHY MOLITORIS
In March of 2016, Carol Heth was on a bus heading to New York City when inspiration struck. Having participated in an outdoor farm-totable dinner, Carol thought she could take the idea one step further. “I said, ‘How about if we do a dinner in the field on our property and at the same time, we help some people who are going through health hardships?’” she recalled. By April of 2016, Carol had rounded up a team to help bring her vision to life. By June, the group had three potential beneficiaries of the dinner and by the fall, the first meal was held. “I Sophia Vayansky (left) and Hope Byers with an interactive map in Columbia Crossing’s new exhibit
Sharing Columbia’s Stories scrapbook of Columbia’s history is on display at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., but this is no ordinary scrapbook. It’s an interactive one, and you can help to fill it. “Columbia’s Storied Places” highlights the town through newspaper clippings, photos and personal stories of residents. One wall is dedicated to a display about the riverfront as well as a section about Columbia’s downtown. “The riverfront was really the hub of business for Columbia, and Third and Locust streets were the heart of downtown,” explained Hope Byers, Columbia Crossing director. Another wall features displays on public education and churches, and the last wall showcases an interactive map, where visitors are encouraged to add their own memories of Columbia and mark the spot where these memories happened. The idea for the exhibit came about after Byers and program coordinator Sophia Vayansky realized how often people came into the center asking about the buildings in town. “Columbia has a lot of
headline is ‘ Weasel Bests Cat.’ That was news at the time.” Advertisements showcase what was being performed at the Columbia Opera House, which was destroyed by fire in 1947, and an article describes a local pastor’s experience marching in Washington with Martin Luther King Jr. When the exhibit is finished, Byers and Vayansky plan to create a digital map of the stories, accessible on the center’s website. The center is also selling copies of “Images of America: Columbia, Marietta and Wrightsville,” which features some of the photos from the exhibit as well other photos and stories. Vayansky encourages people to continue to submit materials for the exhibit. “We want to make this meaningfully curated by the community,” she said. “This is an opportunity put these stories down permanently to share with others.” The center will host a series of lectures to complement the exhibit. The first one will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 23, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and will focus on the history of the opera house. beautiful buildings,” Byers said. “This exhibit is a way for us to tell the history of those buildings, but not in a sterile way just focusing on the architecture. We’re using newspaper clippings, photos and stories to bring these places to life.” Vayansky said people who visit the center often relay stories of their childhood growing up in Columbia. “This exhibit is giving people an opportunity to share those stories,” she stated. “This is important local history, and we want to hear these stories.” Stories on the interactive map relate everything from big events, such as the time John F. Kennedy came to town, to smaller ones, such as when someone felt an earthquake at their house or when a family visited A&W Root Beer for a treat. Byers and Vayansky spent hours combing through newspaper archives and working with both the Columbia Historic Preservation Society and LancasterHistory to find material for the exhibit, and they unearthed some entertaining news. “One article tells the story of a fight between a weasel and a cat in front of the Market House,” Byers commented. “The

Having raised more than $5,600 for each of the first year’s beneficiaries, Carol knew she was onto something. Seven years later, the nonprofit Lancaster County Field of Hope has not only held annual dinners each fall to help people who are facing unexpected medical issues but has expanded to raise funds throughout the year. “To date, we have helped 26 recipients and their families, and we are just shy of giving $235,000 away to individuals,” Carol remarked. Carol and her husband, Pete, are no strangers to helping others. Throughout the years, the lifelong Lancaster County residents, who live in Columbia, have organized fundraisers for friends who needed help. They also open the kitchen at their

The event features food, live music, re-enactments and more. “We hold a Pig Iron Fest at the end of September,” Haneman noted of the event that celebrates the region’s industrial heyday. Walking tours showcasing the local iron furnace industry are also offered, and the organization has created a pocket guide for self-guided walks along the adjacent Northwest River Trail. “We work with a number of other local organizations to

This group of local artists launched the inaugural River Towns Plein Air art show last spring. “Everything we do is meant to highlight the history of this region and encourage people to learn about what was here and the role the rivertowns played. Founded in 2002, Rivertownes is an all-volunteer organization with a home base in the Musselman-Vesta Iron Furnace office building, 26 Furnace Road, Marietta. The furnace was built in 1867 by Henry Musselman and Henry Watts and was the last of the eight hot blast furnaces that lined the Susquehanna River between Marietta and Columbia. “The furnace used iron ore, limestone and anthracite coal as fuel, and they made pig iron,” Haneman noted. It operated until the early 1930s, after which the office building was used as a residence and for storage before sitting empty for decades. In 2003, members of Rivertownes saw the opportunity

“The vaults at Federated Mint are going empty,” said Laura A. Lynne, Director of Coin and Currency for Federated Mint. That’s because a decision by Federated Mint to release rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued coins, some worth up to 50 times their face value, means unsearched Vault Bags loaded with U. S. Gov’t issued coins dating back to the 1800’s are now being handed over to U.S. residents who find the first three digits of their zip code listed in today’s publication. “But don’t thank the Government. issued coins to the general public — I’m being asked how much are the unsearched Vault Bags worth? The answer is, there’s no way to tell. Coin values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees, but we do know this. Each unsearched bag weighs nearly 3 pounds and is known to contain rarely seen Morgan Silver Dollars and these coins alone could be worth $40 - $325 in collector value each according to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins. So there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search through all the coins. But you better believe at just $980 these unsearched Vault Bags are a steal, “said Lynne. “These are not ordinary coins you find in your pocket change. These are rarely seen silver, scarce, collectible and non-circulating U.S. coins dating back to the 1800’s so we won’t be surprised if thousands of U.S. residents claim as many as they can get their hands on. That’s because after the bags were loaded with nearly 3 pounds of Gov’t issued coins, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade quality of very good or above, the dates and mint marks were never searched to determine collector values and the bags were securely sealed. That means there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search all the coins,” said Lynne. The only thing U.S. residents who find their zip code printed in today’s publication need to do is call the National Toll-Free Hotline before the 48-hour deadline ends. This is very important. After the Vault Bags were loaded with over 200 Gov’t issued coins, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade quality of very good or above, the dates and mint marks were never searched to determine collector values. The Vault Bag fee has been set for $1,500 for residents who miss the 48-hour deadline, but for those U.S. residents who beat the 48-hour deadline the Vault Bag fee is just $980 as long as they call the National Toll-Free Hotline before the deadline ends. “Remember this, we cannot stop collectors from buying up all the unsearched bags of coins they can get in this special advertising announcement. And you better believe with each bag being loaded with nearly 3 pounds of Gov’t issued coins we’re guessing they’re going to go quick,” said Lynne. The phone lines will be ringing off the hook

According to Kim McDevitt, director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC), parents of children facing mental health issues could benefit from working with others who really understand their situation. “We feel there is a gap in services in terms of supporting the parents,” said McDevitt. “ We don’t want (parents) to be alone in this.” To fill that gap, MHALC is launching family peer support, a program that provides parents with trained volunteer peers who understand what they are going through and understand the mental health system. “Support is known to be effective,” said Rosie Mann, family peer support program consultant, who cited national studies of family peer support that show that intervention results in better school attendance and need for fewer disciplinary supports, among other benefits. According to Mann, peers are able to interact with parents in ways that clinicians cannot. “(A peer can) take away a sense of shame and judgment from a parent,” Mann explained. “When (advice) comes from a peer, (he or she is saying), ‘I
have tried this and it worked. Maybe you want to try it.’” Since the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health issues among young people have been on the rise. “The surgeon general put out an advisory for youth mental health,” said McDevitt. “(Since the beginning of the pandemic) there has been a 51% increase in emergency room visits for (girls) who have attempted suicide.” For boys, the number is up as well. McDevitt added that supports are in place for students in school, but those do not extend to the home. “We connect them to appropriate resources,” she said. Mann added, “You have a child that threatens suicide and goes to the emergency room, and the doctor says, ‘You’re all right (to go home),’ but when you go home, you still have a family whose child threatened suicide. They are in crisis that their child feels that way.” Mann said that is where family peer support steps in. “Parent education programs are part of supports for families,” said Mann, who noted that the program can help parents determine what classes and other support systems will best serve them. While clinical care is meant

to produce outcomes over time, Mann noted many parents need help with daily issues. “With parents, oftentimes, they have had so much clinical care, but they still can’t get through a day. That’s where we come in,” Mann said. Mann and McDevitt both noted that family peer support can provide parents with a sense of empowerment and efficacy. “Efficacy is the power to change my circumstances,” noted Mann, who said the idea is to battle the sense of helplessness and hopelessness parents often feel. Mann said that her goal in family peer support is to halve
parents’ distress and double their joy. While having a peer to share distress with provides support, sharing joy means emphasizing a child’s successes to make parenting pleasurable and keep parents and children connected in spite of the challenges they face. MHALC has plans to screen and train volunteers for the program. “We are looking for volunteers who are articulate and who have shown they can effectively advocate,” said Mann. Readers who would like to volunteer may call 717397-7461. More information about MHALC may be found at www.mhalancaster.org.

Wagman Tree Wins First Place At Spruce’d Up event. As the first-place winner, For the Love of a Veteran received a $3,000 donation from Traditions Bank on Jan. 14 during the kickoff event for FestiveICE at Cherry Lane in downtown York. Determined Fitness Sets Open House Determined Fitness, a program for breast cancer patients and survivors, will hold an open house on Sunday, Feb. 6, from 1 to 3 p.m. The event will take place at Crush PD Fitness, 35 S. Willowdale Drive, Suite 122, Lancaster. The event will be hosted by Cris Forney, a certified cancer exercise specialist who also holds a master’s degree in counselor education. She has combined her skill sets to help breast cancer patients by providing a dedicated space where they can develop fitness of both their bodies and minds. Forney explained that Determined Fitness offers mindfulness practice and lymphedema preven-
tion along with exercises that promote range of motion, flexibility, functional movement and cardiovascular and strength training. Participants will meet in a clean, private facility. For more information and a link to sign up for a free ticket to the open house visit www.facebook.com/DetFitLanc. Those who are more comfortable in the virtual setting may contact Forney to set up a free consultation at 717-208-2025. In addition, Forney will offer demonstration classes on Tuesdays, Feb. 8 and 22, and Thursdays, Feb. 10 and 24. More details are available on the aforementioned Facebook page.
Phillip Musselman, superintendent; Christina Brown, paralegal; Lisa Wagman Glezer, Wagman president; and Hans Abendschoen from Traditions Bank. Wagman has worked with For the Love of a Veteran for years to collect supplies for holiday care packages and also direct care packages to employees’ family members who are serving. According to Glezer, the boots beneath the tree were from a soldier who served overseas and received a holiday care package from the company. In addition, Wagman invited visitors to share the name of a veter-
an on a star and then hang it on the tree. Spruce’d Up is a free community event held on weekends during the holiday season that allows visitors to vote on their favorite decorated tree, sponsored by local businesses. For the Love of a Veteran aims to create awareness for the needs of military families and veterans, including sending care packages, supporting families during deployments and helping in the fight against PTSD. For more information, visit www.fortheloveofaveteran.org. For more information about Wagman, visit www.wagman.com.
