Senior Commons At Powder Mill Wins Award
Senior Commons at Powder Mill recently announced that it is a winner of SeniorAdvisor.com’s annual Best of 2021 Award for outstanding senior living determined by online reviews written by seniors and their families. The award honors senior care providers across the U.S. and Canada.
A Place for Mom, a senior living referral service, launched SeniorAdvisor.com in 2013. Of the nearly 45,000 senior living care providers listed on its site, only around 600 were recognized with the Best of 2021 Award.
To qualify for Best of Senior Living, senior living communities and home-care providers had to maintain a 4.5-star rating or above and receive six new reviews between Oct. 19, 2019, and Oct. 31, 2020. Readers may find additional details and a complete list of award winners at www.SeniorAdvisor.com.

Dayspring Christian Academy invites families with soonto-be preschoolers, prekindergartners, and kindergartners to attend an open house on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m. at the school, 120 College Ave., Mountville.
The kindergarten open house will feature a Winnie the Pooh Valentine’s Day party that will focus on Proverbs 17:17a. Parents will meet with teachers and learn about the Principle Approach, which is a method of thinking and living by God’s truth and which is the method of education used at Dayspring. Michael Myers, headmaster, noted that children learned this way during the Colonial and founding periods in America.
Dayspring offers two distinct kindergarten programs. Children begin learning about a variety of subjects, including science, history, and geography, and they begin reasoning from the Bible, noted Myers. God is viewed as the author of all subjects. Both kindergarten classes use field studies to bring to life what children learn in the classroom.
The prekindergarten program is appropriate for children who are 4 years old or who have just turned 5 at the start of the school year. The program is activity-oriented while introducing the structure and rigors of a formal classroom setting. As a first step into scholarship, the student notebook is introduced, and students begin formal steps toward reading through the Sound Sensible program. Students develop early math skills, learn a Bible verse for each letter of the alphabet, and delve into literature as they study the life of Beatrix Potter. They explore music, art, and the environment around them, and they learn to experience the wonder of creation.
The kindergarten program is appropriate for students who are 5 years old through early 6 at the start of the school year. The program is still activityoriented, but more emphasis is placed on paper-and-pencil activities and structured seat work. The student notebook is expanded and built upon as a tool for scholarship. The Writing Road to Reading literacy program is introduced at this level. Students expand their phonetic awareness and segmentation in preparation of beginning to read; many children learn to read before completing kindergarten.
In addition to kindergarten, Dayspring Christian Academy offers preschool programs for children who are 3 by Sept. 1. Preschool is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 to 11 a.m.
These programs offer an introduction to the alphabet as students learn a Bible hero for each letter of the alphabet, culminating with a Bible Character Day complete with costumes. Age-appropriate history, science, literature, and math lessons are woven together and rooted in God’s Word. Guided free play incorporates principles of self-government, order, and unity. Circle time incorporates songs, the calendar, weather, colors, and Bible stories. Daily art projects incorporate the history, science, Bible, and literature focus.
For more information or to register, readers may call 717285-2000 or visit www.dayspringchristian.com.

Platts Speaks About Organization
Mark Platts from Susquehanna National Heritage Area recently made a presentation at a weekly meeting of the York East Rotary. Susquehanna National Heritage Area is a regional nonprofit organization and Congressionally designated coordinating entity for America’s 55th National Heritage Area. It collaborates with local, state and national partners to connect people to the nationally important places and stories of Lancaster and York counties in southcentral Pennsylvania. Its work focuses on the cultural and natural resources of the Susquehanna River and the scenic and historic landscapes and communities along its shores.
Susquehanna National Heritage Area is based at the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, a historic home on the river near Wrightsville. It also manages the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, a visitor education center on the waterfront in Columbia, and is part of the Alliance of National Heritage Areas, the statewide network of officially designated Pennsylvania Heritage Areas.
During his presentation, Platts also reviewed the proposed Susquehanna Discovery Center at the historic Mifflin House and Farm.

Blog frompg 1
“A lot of our website is education-based,” said Caryn Thompson, marketing coordinator for Mental Health America of Lancaster County. “What we’re trying to do with the blog is complement that with personal stories. As far as mental health goes, it’s a topic that’s not just about facts and figures. We can tell you all the stats in the world, but that is not always going to get our point across. Sometimes, the experience of other people educates just as much.”
The blog is being written by in-house writers, including Thompson, but will also be open to community submissions. Categories include educational pieces from people including physicians and counselors, personal stories and a creative category.
For this last category, Thompson emphasized that the blog could include a variety of submissions. “Not everybody connects with words,” she explained. “If somebody wants to send in art, like photography or paintings ... we’re OK with that, too.”
Thompson already has five or six submissions for the blog and said that anyone who is interested in contributing can get help to get started.
“We have a list of topics if you’re not sure what to write about,” she stated. “We can give you some prompt sentences to give you a boost as a way to start writing. You don’t have to keep going on that topic, but it might get your creative juices flowing.”
Submissions will be vetted by the organization, and Thompson is hoping to post weekly to the blog.
“When you have people out there in the world telling their personal stories, that helps reduce the stigma surrounding mental health,” she remarked. “You can see that here is a human being who is living with this diagnosis, but she is still going to work, still feeding her family, still contributing to society. These personal stories can help other people learn what it’s like to live with anxiety or to be bipolar, for example.”
Thompson said the blog has a personal connection because she’s the mother of a 20-year-old son who has bipolar disorder. She started writing about her experiences as a parent when he was in middle school, and her writing was shared with other parents.
“I know that personal stories can help other people,” she stated. “And if personal stories are engaging, people are more likely to read the educational information on our website and more likely to want to learn more.”
For more information about submitting material to the blog, readers may contact Thompson at cthompson@mhalancaster.org.

Workshops frompg 1
For the first workshop series, DreamWrights will use a selection of Aesop’s Fables to teach participants about the various aspects of putting on a production.
“They’ll be doing everything from gathering props and costumes to working on lights and sound and acting,” explained Kate Harmon, marketing coordinator. She added that participants will also learn about voice-over work using the facility’s new recording studio. “At the end of the workshop, we’ll record the production to show to friends and family,” she said.
The second series of workshops will introduce participants to the audition process.
“We have heard a lot over the years that people are interested in doing audition workshops,” Harmon remarked, noting that the series will focus on two upcoming shows, “Shrek” and “West Side Story School Edition,” with sessions on choreography, vocal techniques and acting choices. “We thought it would be fun to bring together people of all ages to work on music and dance and other features of these two productions. It doesn’t mean you’ll get a role in the show. You’ll still have to audition, but it will give people an idea of what to expect at the audition and to be prepared.”
The audition workshop offers an opportunity for DreamWrights to fulfill part of its mission, Harmon noted. “We have a lot of kids who come in to audition having never memorized lines, never been on stage before,” she stated. “We’re an educational nonprofit, so that is not a problem for us, but this will give them a little more confidence when they audition, if they’ve already been working on a particular show for weeks.”
This is the first time DreamWrights is holding winter workshops. “Usually by this time, we’re well into our first and second productions of the year,” Harmon said. “This year, because of COVID, we’re delaying our season, but this is giving us a way to stay active and still have people here in a safe way.”
She encourages anyone with an interest in theater to sign up for the workshops, which are open to children and adults. Scholarships are available as well.
Class sizes will be kept small, and both mask wearing and social distancing will be enforced, Harmon noted. “We’re all looking for things to do and something to make us smile and laugh and be around other people,” she said, “and this is a great opportunity to do that in a safe environment.”
For more information on the workshops, readers may visit https://dreamwrights.org.
