Take A Stroll With Your Sweetheart BY CATHY MOLITORIS
lison Liebgott is a self-professed fan of Valentine’s Day. So, the owner of Miss Alison’s Studio in Columbia decided to take her love for the holiday out into the community. She’s organizing a Romantic Stroll Through Park on Saturday, Feb. 13, from 3 to 5 p.m. in Columbia’s Locust Street Park, Fifth and Locust streets. “I’m doing this to spread the love,” she stated. “This is my season. I’m such a nut when it comes to Valentine’s Day. I love it. I’m trying to spread positive vibes.” For the event, she is inviting people to purchase a wooden heart, which she will then decorate with up to two names of loved ones. “We’ll smother the hearts in glitter, and then we’ll hang them on trees throughout the park,” she explained. “You can come with your honey, stroll through the park and hunt for your heart, take a picture of your heart and then take the heart home with you.” In addition to the hearts, the
A
event will feature a variety of hot cocoa bombs and chocolate-covered strawberries for sale. There will also be a photo booth set up in the park’s gazebo. “We’re encouraging people to take photos in the booth and enter our Best Dressed in Red contest,” Liebgott said, adding that prizes will be awarded.
“I’m doing this to spread the love,” she stated. “This is my season. I’m such a nut when it comes to Valentine’s Day. I love it. I’m trying to spread positive vibes.” Liebgott opened her studio about two years ago and offers art and yoga classes. She came up with the idea for the stroll after Googling ideas for celebrating Valentine’s Day and seeing similar events. “ We have such a great park with so many trees, I thought we
could totally do this,” she recalled. Proceeds from the heart sales will be split between paying for materials for the hearts and benefiting the Columbia Parks and Recreation department. Liebgott emphasized that the event offers people a chance to do something romantic with their sweetheart and to celebrate being outdoors. “This is just something fun to get people out to walk around a bit, to be a part of something,” she stated. “It’s a way to be around other people without being too close to them. We wanted to offer something social that wasn’t in an enclosed space.” For more information on the event, readers may visit www.missalisons.com and click on “In-Studio Events.”
Bring your sweetheart to hunt for a heart in the park at a Feb. 13 event to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

For more than 40 years, St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Columbia has been serving a Lenten fish fry to the community. While last year’s event was cut short by the pandemic, this year the event is continuing with a few changes. The Lenten fish fry will begin on Friday, Feb. 19, and will run on Fridays through March 26. See Fish Fry pg 4

event, to be held Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 8 p.m., is organized by Comic Cure and will feature adoptable pets and human performers. Proceeds will benefit numerous animal shelters, including Columbia Animal Shelter, 265 S. 10th St. “The event features a full lineup of comedians, including people who participated on ‘America’s Got Talent’ and who have appeared on Comedy Central,” said Tammy Loughlin, executive director of Columbia Animal Shelter. Performers include D.J. Demers, magician Eric Jones, Liz Miele and Brooklyn Jones. For each ticket sold, Columbia Animal Shelter will receive half of the proceeds. “If we sell more than 50 tickets, we get to do a live feed during the show or a prerecorded video of our shelter and our animals,” she noted. “Our goal is to get over that 50 mark.”

Purchase $10.00 worth of Clothing or Shoes and draw a ticket for ($1.00-$10.00) savings on purchase.
Ticket sales will help the shelter continue to provide care for cats and dogs, she said, adding that the feline-focused facility has space for up to 120 cats. “We are raising funds to open a dental clinic,” Loughlin stated. “We have a spay/neuter clinic, and we want to now offer dental services. Most people don’t realize that dental work for pets is extremely expensive. It can be hundreds of dollars for a cat to have its teeth cleaned at a vet.” The shelter opened in June 2019 and accepts cat and dog surrenders or strays from the Columbia area. Adoptions are open to anyone, and Loughlin said she has had customers come from as far away as New York and Maryland. “Our mission is to rescue and rehome at-risk companion animals,” she explained. “We provide them with quality health care and help them have the best chance of getting their forever home.” The Stand Pup Comedy event is a way for the shelter to not only raise
money, but also to spread the word about what it offers, she said. “It’s going to be a fun evening of being able to sit in the comfort of your living room and have a laugh while helping the pets in our shelter,” Loughlin stated. “You can enjoy a laugh and help us help our furry friends.” For more information on Stand Pup Comedy or to purchase tickets, readers may search “Stand Pup Comedy” at www.eventbrite.com.

coleslaw, stewed tomatoes and a dinner roll. Fried fish filet sandwiches and crab cake sandwiches will also be for sale, Storm said, along with side orders of macaroni and cheese, stewed tomatoes and coleslaw. Additionally, homemade cream of crab soup, potato soup and cheesy broccoli soup will be for sale, and the type will vary each week. “A variety of individually wrapped baked goods made by the women of the parish will also be available,” Storm noted. The Lenten fish fry is sponsored by the Parish Council of Catholic Women with assistance from men of the parish. Storm said it’s not only a long-standing tradition for the church, but it’s also a way for the church to serve the community while raising money. “Proceeds are used to fund various activities in the parish,” she explained. Customers are asked to call in orders from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday or Thursday evening each week prior to the Friday fish fry. Orders may be placed by calling 717-684-0414. Alternately, customers may email orders to stpetersfishfry@gmail.com by 8 p.m. on the Thursday evening prior to that week’s dinner. Email orders should include the customer’s name and preferred pickup date and time. A limited number of walk-in orders will also be available.

Restaurant Week will take place from Friday, Feb. 19, through Sunday, Feb. 28, featuring more than 35 York city eateries. Delivery and takeout will be integral to this year’s event, along with dine-in options as allowed by state mandates. Normally, the event’s goal is to position York as one of the top culinary destinations in southcentral Pennsylvania by increasing awareness of the many dining opportunities available. This year, the event will aim to show the community
what these restaurants can do when times are tough. The York City Independent Restaurant Association and its sponsors worked to eliminate barriers to participate and were able to offer free registration to the eateries. Menus and the list of participating restaurants will be posted at www.rwyork.com. “Go Red For Women” Event Planned The American Heart Association, a nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, has announced that the 2021 York/Adams Go Red for Women event will be a free digital experience this year. Go Red for Women events nationwide have moved to digital formats due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event will be held via Zoom on Thursday, Feb. 18, at 5:30 p.m. It is designed to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease, the No. 1 killer of women, and to support the fight to end heart disease and stroke. The event is co-chaired by Mary Winand, client services associate at The Financial Advisory Group, and Lisa Duffy, director of marketing and development at UPMC Hanover. The York/Adams Go Red for Women digital experience is sponsored nationally by CVS Health and locally by WellSpan Health, York Traditions Bank, UPMC and other supporters. The York/Adams Go Red for
Women digital experience will be hosted by Lori Burkholder of WGAL. The event will include presentations from women’s health experts at WellSpan Health and UPMC as well as the stories of seven local survivors of all ages. Guests will have opportunities to support the American Heart Association by texting YORKADAMS GORED to 41444 during the event and by participating in the online silent auction. The silent auction will open prior to the event on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 8 a.m. and close as the digital experience begins on Feb. 18 at 5:30 p.m. More information about registering for the digital experience and silent auction is available at www.Heart.org/YorkPAGoRed. While nearly 80% of cardiac events may be prevented, one in three women live with some form of cardiovascular disease, according to the American Heart Association. Heart disease and stroke can affect a woman at any age. To prevent cardiovascular disease, women should
understand their family health history, know several important numbers and make lifestyle changes like moving more, eating smart and managing their blood pressure. In the past 17 years, the American Heart Association has reached tens of millions of women and health care professionals with lifesaving resources. It encourages public health organizations, government entities, health care professionals and community organizations to join forces and provide solutions to improve awareness of cardiovascular disease. Additionally, the American Heart
Association and Verily’s Project Baseline launched Research Goes Red to encourage women to sign up for and participate in clinical trials. More details are available by visiting www.GoRedForWomen.org, clicking on “Research” under “Get Involved” and clicking “Join thousands of women in the fight against heart disease.” For more information on the York/Adams Go Red for Women digital experience, readers may visit www.Heart.org/York PAGoRed. They may learn more about Go Red for Women at www.GoRedForWomen.org.
