Wrightsville River Rat Plunge Will Benefit Special Olympics BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When the pandemic prevented Special Olympics Pennsylvania from holding its annual Polar Plunge, residents of Wrightsville took matters into their own hands. Thanks to a team effort, the first Wrightsville River Rat Plunge will take place on Saturday, March 6, at John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St. “I have participated in the Polar Plunge almost every year since it
started in 2010,” said Ed Klinedinst. “When I heard it wasn’t happening this year, I put something out on the Wrightsville Facebook page to see if anyone was interested in doing a local one.” He said he was overwhelmed by the reaction to his question. “I thought I might get a group of my friends together to do our own plunge, but the response was huge,” he remarked. “I was blown away by how many people wanted to participate.” See Plunge pg 2
Mark Wanner and pastor Maria Yocum-Carlson of Salem United Church of Christ displayed the 2,300 cans of soup that the church collected for local food banks.
Church Souper Bowl Benefits Food Banks hanks to its “souper” efforts, the congregation at Salem United Church of Christ in Rohrerstown has made an impact on food banks throughout the county. The church held its annual Souper Bowl event throughout the month of January. Congregants were encouraged to donated cans of soup or money to purchase soup, said Mark Wanner, who helped with the event. “I took the monetary donations from our congregation and worked with the Centerville Giant Food Store to purchase Campbell’s soup at a discounted price,” he explained. “The Giant Food Store is always very willing to work with us and to help our soup drive.” This year, the church donated 2,314 cans, an all-time high for the collection. “Of that, we were able to purchase (a total of) 88 cases of chicken noodle soup, tomato soup,
“We have very good people in our congregation, and when you ask for something, they come through.” “We always have a grocery shopping cart at the church, and we collect food year-round and then somebody takes it to the food pantry at Zion Lutheran Church, but this time, since we had so much soup, they were not able to take all of it,” Wanner stated. “We

had connections at the other food banks, and they were very appreciative of the donation. Especially at this time of year, when it’s cold, people love soup.” Wanner emphasized that Salem United Church of Christ is not a large church, but that a small group can make a big impact. “Before COVID, we were getting about 50 people on any Sunday,” he said. “We have very good people in our congregation, and when you ask for something, they come through.” In addition to the Souper Bowl, the church conducts monthly mission outreach projects to support a variety of local organizations. The first year the church held its Souper Bowl, in 2010, the congregation collected 224 cans of soup. To see that number increase dramatically over the years is not a surprise to Wanner, who added, “Our congregation always rises to the occasion.”
The Wrightsville River Rat Plunge encourages people to jump into the Susquehanna River as part of the event on March 6 to raise money for Special Olympics.
Mitzvah Moms Give Back BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Inspired by a desire to give back, two local moms have created a group to help others. Mitzvah Moms was created by Gina Krouse of Lampeter and Gena Harting of Strasburg in the fall of 2020. Initially, the pair focused on collecting items for the homeless, but they then shifted their mission to helping people affected by COVID-19. “COVID started hitting close to home,” Harting said. “We knew someone at our synagogue who got sick, so we put together a basket for them. Then, someone in my moms’

We started tossing around the idea of creating a group called Mitzvah Moms because it sounded cute and also because we thought there might be other people who would like to do this with us.” The pair created a Facebook group and soon had almost 100 members. “Mitzvah” is a Hebrew word that means “good deed.” The friends use their Facebook group to create gift baskets to give to people affected by COVID-19. “The baskets include a new, soft blanket and self-care products to help with decongestion,” Krouse noted. “They also have snacks because everybody loves food. It’s a basket of comfort items. We wanted to focus on the comfort, warmth and support.” Baskets are catered to the individual, and all recipients are kept as confidential as possible, she stated, adding, “We ask for some basic information about the person receiving the basket ... so they get a basket that really fits their needs and wants.” Mitzvah Moms took off quickly as

word spread through the friends’ network as well as their synagogue, Shaarai Shomayim in Lancaster. “Our rabbi is involved with the Interfaith Coalition in Lancaster, and we asked him if he would consider spreading the word among other congregation leaders and passing names our way,” Krouse explained. The women said donations of items for baskets and monetary gifts have been overwhelming, and in fact, they currently have more donations than people to receive them. “It’s a good problem to have,” Harting stated. “We’re facing the challenge of trying to reach out and identify more people who would like a basket.” Harting and Krouse, who have four children among them and homeschool their kids, said Mitzvah Moms has offered a way to set an example for their families while also making a difference in their community. They have been pleasantly surprised by the number of people who have offered to help with their project. “The purpose for this goes way

Plunge from pg 1 While Special Olympics Pennsylvania is holding a modified event this year, asking participants to hold a “Burrr-tual Polar Pop Plunge” at home by popping a water balloon over their heads, Klinedinst wanted to try something more like the usual plunge into the Susquehanna River. “I found out this is something people really look forward to every year,” he said, noting that the Wrightsville River Rat Plunge will feature the same format as the typical Polar Plunge, with people plunging into the river’s frigid water to raise money for Special Olympics. Although the Wrightsville event will be a scaled-down version of previous plunges, it will still have all the spirit of the original, Klinedinst explained. “I’m not someone who organizes events, but I’ve been really blessed to have help from a lot of people,” he stated, listing the staff at John Wright Restaurant among those who assisted. Registration for the plunge will begin at 10 a.m., and the plunge will start at noon. The rain date for
the event is Saturday, March 13. The deadline for preregistration is Wednesday, March 3, but walksins are also welcome on the day of the plunge. Participants who raise at least $20 will receive a T-shirt, and opportunities are available for company logos on shirts for groups reaching specific fundraising levels. “We really wanted to do this to bring the community together,” said Michele Eisenhauer, who is helping to organize the plunge. “This is a normally a huge fundraiser for Special Olympics, and we just wanted to be sure they are still getting money this year.” Klinedinst emphasized that while the event may look a little different this year, its mission remains the same. “It’s a great way to give back to the community and help a great cause,” he stated. “It’s just a lot of fun.” For more information on the Wrightsville River Rat Plunge, readers may email Wrightsville RiverRatPlunge@gmail.com or search for “Wrightsville River Rat Plunge” on Facebook.

Lincoln Hostetter (left) and Lily Gregory participate in a collaborative math activity. Dayspring Christian Academy has instituted a Hybrid Learning Initiative engaging students through three rotating stations: small group direct instruction, collaborative learning application stations, and independent online work.
Dayspring Christian Academy, which teaches students using the Principle Approach, will host an all-school open house on Thursday, March 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the school, located at 120 College Ave., Mountville. Families will be able to tour the school and visit with teachers. Dayspring was founded in 1987 and is one of 25 Principle Approach schools in America. Of those, Dayspring is one of five model demonstration schools. The school’s goal is to equip students to acknowledge the lordship of Jesus Christ and develop a biblical worldview. Through the classical method of education, students work to develop excellence in academics and character. Inherent in the Principle Approach is the aim of restoring America’s biblical foundation. Dayspring offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities, including Lower School and Upper School sports. These sports are soccer, volleyball, basketball, lacrosse, track, and golf. A partnership with McCaskey High School in Lancaster permits students to participate in all of the school’s sports, including football, baseball, and swimming. Additionally, courses and clubs include Lower School Choir, Performance Choir, middle school and high school choirs, and art. Further, students in fourth grade learn to play the violin while fifth-grade students all
learn to play the ukulele. Students in grades six through 12 also have opportunities to try many new experiences through a wide array of clubs, ranging from Wire Art to Baking to Photographic Microscopy. The school’s Principle Approach curriculum includes many in-depth field study experiences, including time in Plymouth, Mass., to study the Pilgrims; Boston to study John Adams’ family; Gettysburg; the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter in Kentucky; and New York City. As a culmination to the Principle Approach education, seniors travel to Israel for a nearly two-week field study. To register for the open house and for more information about Dayspring, readers may at www.dayspringchristian.com or call 717-285-2000.

ers, mathematicians, and scientists. These goals are directly aligned with the Eastern York School District’s curricula. Both morning and afternoon classes are held. The prekindergarten program is designed to meet the needs of students who do not meet the age eligibility requirements for kindergarten, those who would benefit from an additional year of preschool, and those who are looking for a more intensive five-day program. It utilizes the Starfall curriculum for language arts and reading development. For math instruction, the school follows the Math Counts program to prepare its students with the skills needed to be successful in meeting the requirements of kindergarten. This curriculum aligns with the mathematics curriculum of Eastern York School District. Prekindergarten meets on Mondays through Fridays from 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. An extended day/lunch bunch program is offered two days a week from October to April. Students may bring a cold packed lunch to school to enjoy with their friends followed by specially themed enrichment activities which include art, music, literature, language, and science. The school’s goal is to encourage the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development of each child through meaningful play, creative learning, exploration, and discovery. The program is tailored to meet the needs of 2- to 5-year-old students. Interested families may call the office at 717-757-3169 or email preschool@trinityhallam.com to schedule a private tour. Registration forms and further information may be found at www.trinityhallam .com/preschool.

Trinity UCC Preschool, 200 E. Market St., Hallam, is accepting registrations for the 2021-22 school year. The school strives to provide a safe and secure learning environment where creativity is encouraged, a progressive curriculum is taught, and each child is recognized as one of God’s children. A teacher-led class begins at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 11 a.m. The class includes discovery and learning stations, music and movement, crafts and snack time. Adults have the option to stay and play with their child during that time, remain on the premises, or leave the building. The school’s 3-year-old students meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They learn during circle time, at tables during small group instruction, and during thoughtful play. The focus of this program is on social development while introducing students to a variety of early literacy skills and number development as well as many concepts and themes throughout the year. Both morning and afternoon sessions are available. Kindergarten readiness is the priority for the three-day program for 4-year-olds that meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The program’s goal is for students to gain a basic understanding of core content areas needed to be emergent in literacy, as well as to develop number sense and other basic skills as they become active read-
