ope Byers is mad at the groundhog, which predicted six more weeks of winter. “We are all waiting for spring,” said the director of Columbia Crossing River Trails Center. “We all have cabin fever.” But she has a solution: Spring Into the Park. The five-day event will be held at the center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, from Tuesday, March 22, through Saturday, March 26, and will feature activities for people of all ages. “We want to kick off spring and show you all the fun you can have here,” Byers said. Highlights on Tuesday will include bingo and trivia hosted by Columbia Senior Center, beginning at 9:30 a.m., as well as a free yoga class on the riverside deck with Vital Tree Yoga, beginning at 6 p.m. On Wednesday, March 23, a Bridge Walk & Talk will be held at 11 a.m., with a Susquehanna National Heritage Area guide offering information about the bridges that have spanned the Susquehanna River. At 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Monica Spiese will host “Tell Your Story: An Oral History Workshop.” While the activities on Tuesday and Wednesday are geared more toward adults, Thursday, March 24, and Friday, March 25, will feature lots of kid-friendly options, Byers stated. Columbia School District has an early dismissal on Thursday and no school on Friday, offering plenty of time for students to head to Columbia Crossing, she said. Thursday’s programs will include story time and craft time with the Columbia Public Library, beginning at 10:30 a.m., as well as a Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary show at 2 p.m. A chalk obstacle course will also be set up under the center’s deck. On Friday, The Common Wheel will offer a free kids’ bicycle program during the day, and Raven Ridge Wildlife Center will present question-and-answer sessions

SAIL (Systems Aligned in Learning), a product of a collaborative effort between United Way of Lancaster and Luthercare that began more than five years ago, has endeavored to give Lancaster County children access to highquality child care. Utilizing peer mentors, the program has worked with in-home child care providers in a variety of ways to offer children and their families enhanced services. With the advent of COVID-19 and resulting restrictions, SAIL representatives knew they had to dig deeper to help families served by in-home child care providers. “One of the things we decided to do was to look at the emerging needs of the community in response to the pandemic,” said Ryan Fisher, assistant vice president of philanthropy with Luthercare. What they found resulted in SAIL honing its focus. See Families pg 3

“Through our collaborative with the United Way and with Lancaster General Health as our partner, we discovered there were a large number of families served by in-home child care providers that were food insecure and qualified for distribution from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank,” said Fisher. By February, that research resulted in a pilot program that brought free produce and nonperishable foods to some of the families of the approximately 40 in-home child care providers served by SAIL mentors. Boxes of food, which included onions, cantaloupe, pasta, canned fruit, and fruit juice, were delivered through the child care providers to lowincome families that had been adversely affected by the challenges of the pandemic. Child care providers also received food and hand sanitizer. “It is our goal to continue (the program),” said Lorita Valente, executive director of community programs with Luthercare. “We plan to do it the last Thursday of every month at this point and add more (child care) providers

For the members of the Marietta Legion Riders, it’s hard to tell what they love more: riding their bikes or giving back to their community. Lucky for them, they have equal opportunity to do both. Formed in the 1970s, the group has about 42 members, men and women who are either riders or passengers. Since its inception, the Marietta Riders group has had a mission of making an impact on the community. The group focuses on veterans’ organizations and events, but not exclusively, said secretary Colie Schmitt, who rides as a passenger with her husband, Robert. “Ninety-five percent of what we do is vet-related, but we also help others when there are needs in the community,” she said. The group collects items for Toys for Tots and participates in the

Marietta, Bainbridge and Maytown Memorial Day parades. It holds biannual chicken barbecues and spaghetti dinners, and it recently acquired a mailbox, which it fixed up and will install in the Legion parking lot as a receptacle where the community can deposit tattered flags for retirement. In May, the group will begin repairs on the Marietta Cemetery, working with a local Boy Scout troop. On the second Sunday of every month, from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m., the group holds an all-you-can-eat breakfast to benefit various organizations. On Sunday, March 13, proceeds will support Woodworking with Warriors, a Quarryville-based nonprofit that serves wounded veterans. “We do a lot of research into the groups we support, because want to make sure

they are nonprofits and they are helping the local community,” explained president Bill Rittenhouse. “All of the money we raise goes out to the door to the organization. We keep nothing.” For members of the Riders, the group provides not only a way to give back but also a chance to socialize with likeminded friends. “I joined because I wanted to ride with other people,” said Jerry Bush, “but I really like this group because they are making the community better.” Wade Drescher noted that his participation is a way to honor veterans - including his family members - since he himself never served. This sentiment was echoed by others in the group. Rittenhouse said the group provides a sense of security during rides, explaining that there’s safety in numbers, but even more importantly, the Riders foster a sense of camaraderie. The members have bonded like a family over the impact they’ve had on the community. “Anybody can write a check, but we like to get involved,” he stated. “We like to meet the people we’re serving and shake their hands.” The group is always looking for new members, and its charity rides are open to anyone. “You do not have to be a member to ride with us,” Rittenhouse remarked. “If you have a motorcycle, you are welcome to join us.” Upcoming rides include Saturday, May 14, to benefit the Burning Bridges Foundation; Saturday, June 11, for Donegal Trout Unlimited; and Saturday, Aug. 13, for Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania’s Tiny Homes for Homeless Veterans. Wiederseim To Sell Collection Of Ed And Carol Stoudt Of Stoudts’ Black Angus Brewery and Pub Sale To Take Place In Phoenixville On July 24

This is a vintage Wurlitzer juke box. Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.

The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively

for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel

running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.” Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. A preview starts Monday, July 19, and runs through Friday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held at Wiederseim’s facility, located at 1041 W. Bridge St., Phoenixville, Pa. For additional information, call 610-827-1910 or visit www.wiederseim.com.

The American Heart Association recently announced the 2022 South Central Pennsylvania Woman of Impact nominees. These women were nominated by their peers because of their passion and drive to increase awareness of cardiovascular disease and to make a difference both in their community and for the Go Red for Women movement The nominees are Heidi Bowie, strategic partnership client executive, Highmark; Emily Bumgarner, registered dietitian, Weis Markets; Molly Halbert, owner, m.elene vintage; Lizaida Morales, medical software trainer, UPMC Central PA; and Melissa Sprout, assistant store manager, Weis Markets. Beginning on National Wear Red Day, Feb. 4, these five women began an eightweek initiative to transform the health of women in southcentral Pennsylvania. The nominees will recruit champions from their networks to form an impact

team and work together to have a direct impact on women’s health and the Go Red for Women movement. Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association’s signature movement to encourage heart health awareness and harness the energy, passion and power of women to band together and collectively wipe out heart disease. During each week of the initiative, nominees will participate in a variety of activities designed to drive mission impact and create a culture of health and health equity, locally. Nominees will help raise awareness of cardiovascular disease - the No. 1 killer of women - as well as engage women in research, train community members in CPR, organize local events and more. In addition to performing impact activities, nominees and their impact teams will set a goal and work together to raise funds for the American Heart Association. Each activity and dollar raised will

gain the nominee impact points. On World Health Day, Thursday, April 7, the nominee whose team has made the largest impact and has accumulated the highest number of impact points will be named the South Central Pennsylvania Woman of Impact award winner. The winner and all of the nominees will be recognized for their efforts during the 2022 Capital Region Go Red for Women event set for Thursday, May 12, at the West Shore Country Club. The Woman of Impact program began last year, and the participants raised more than $13,000, noted Wendy Oliver, regional vice president at Weis Markets and co-chair of the 2022 Capital Region Go Red for Women campaign. “Remember America” To Emphasize Education

Now Online!

BY ANN MEAD ASH

Wedding P lanner

“The mission (of Remember America) is to remind Americans of their unique heritage of liberty that was founded upon biblical principles,” said Dayspring Christian Academy events manager Lisa Becker. “Our hearts first need to be turned to the Lord, and that personal revival extends from us to our family to our community to our state to our nation.” The 2022 Remember America Speaker Series will feature Turning Point USA president and founder Charlie Kirk as the keynote speaker. This year’s presentation, which will include chorale performances and an orator, will be held at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, on Saturday, April 23. The dinner will be served at 6 p.m. The keynote speech, which will begin at 7:15 p.m., will be followed by a brief question and answer period. Kirk, an activist and radio show host, founded Turning Point USA with Bill Montgomery in 2012, and he currently serves as CEO of Turning Point Action and Turning Point Faith. Turning Point USA is a nonprofit organization with chapters promoting conservative values on high school, college, and university campuses. Dayspring headmaster Dan Stone said that organizers have been hoping to have Kirk participate in Remember America. “As I was praying through our short list (of speakers) … I felt education is prominent in people’s thinking right now,” said Stone.

“It’s a great time to highlight how education is such an important part of what our country is going through.” Stone noted that it seemed natural to choose Kirk to speak on the importance of education in restoring the country to biblical values. The theme of this year’s event is “Faith. Courage. Liberty.” “It starts with faith (because) in today’s world, Christians are being put in a position where they will choose to be courageous or not,” said Stone. We are calling people to choose courage, and liberty will be the result.” Becker agreed, noting that the theme reflects the study of the country’s foundation, which is at the heart of Remember America. “We are reminding people (that) the founding documents of our nation and the writings of our founders … (had) a biblical world view,” said Becker. She also noted that the faith of the founders was applied to the building of the nation. “When you look at some of our founders and what they have written, you understand these were men of faith who were willing to stand and sacrifice,” she said. “Their faith inspired their courage, and what they endured established liberty like nothing else the world had ever seen.” Three types of tickets are available for the event. Readers may purchase tickets to the dinner and presentation, tickets to the gallery for the presentation only, or tickets to the presentation in a livestreamed format. Tickets are available at www.dayspringchristian.com or by calling the school at 717285-2000.

The York Kennel Club, Delaware County Kennel Club, and Lancaster Kennel Club will present the Celtic Classic Annual All Breed Dog Show, one of the largest shows on the East Coast. The show will run from Wednesday, March 16, through Sunday, March 20. The event will begin at 8 a.m. each day at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., York. Additionally, 36 specialty breed shows and educational seminars will be offered during the classic show. Up to 3,000 entries will be pre-

sent each day. The Best in Show events will be held in the late afternoon. Only dogs registered in the show will be allowed on-site. Vendors and concessions will be available. For the safety of the humans and canines present, no strollers are permitted in the show or grooming areas. For last-minute safety guidelines, visit www.yorkexpo.com. Admission and parking are free.
