Columbia will present “Zombie Prom”
BY CATHY MOLITORISIt’sa classic girl-meets-ghoul love story, and you’re invited to see it play out on stage at Columbia High School when the theater program presents “Zombie Prom.” The musical will be performed at the school, 901 Ironville Pike, on Thursday, March 23, through Saturday, March 25, at 7 p.m., with an additional performance on Saturday at 2 p.m.
“This show is about a bad boy named Jonny, who falls in love with a good girl named Toffee,” explained senior Allie Unkow, who plays Joey, one of Jonny’s friends. Toffee’s parents do not approve of Jonny, so the pair breaks up, leading Jonny to take drastic measures. “He storms off and accidently falls into nuclear waste,” Allie stated. Jonny is turned into a zombie, but he returns to school determined to graduate and even more determined to take Toffee to prom.
“His return sort of sets off a civil war in the school,” Allie revealed. “The boys want Jonny back, and the girls try to shield Toffee from Jonny.” Eventually, however, the students unite in time for a happy ending.
Set in the 1950s, the show is a send-up of the teen romances
popular in that decade. “This show is full of upbeat, ’50s-style rock,” said Ciara Ramos, a senior who portrays Ginger. “Audiences can expect to be dancing in their seats.”
Even though the show takes place well before any of the cast members were born, the students can still relate to its themes, Ciara stated. “I think people will see themselves in the characters,” she noted. “There’s the nerdy kids, the jocks, the cheerleaders and your average kids. It’s very representative of what high school was like, at least what it was like in the 1950s.”
Allie noted that the musical is full of catchy songs that will keep audiences entertained, adding, “You’ll have a couple of laughs, and you’ll hear songs that will be stuck in your head for weeks.”
Ciara summed up “Zombie Prom” by emphasizing that audiences might find parts of it familiar. “It’s sort of a ‘Grease’-type show,” she said. “If you love ‘Grease’ with a little bit of zombies thrown in, you will love this show.”
Tickets for “Zombie Prom” will be available at the door, with a discount for senior citizens and students. Admission is free for children under age 5.
Mobile pantry will bring food to local residents
BY CATHY MOLITORISOver the past few decades, the Catholic Harvest Food Pantry has been serving residents of York County, but the staff always felt something was missing. “We were wondering how we can bring our services to the people who live farther away or who don’t have the transportation to get here,” said Tahani Samphilipo, program coordinator for the pantry, located in downtown York. The solution came in the form of a mobile pantry, which started serving the Hellam/Wrightsville area in February. Food will be distributed on the

Scholarship offered to future EMTs and paramedics
BY CATHY MOLITORISMichael P. McMahon was a true Renaissance man. A 1993 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School, he was a registered nurse, a flight attendant and a school bus driver. Each job offered Michael a chance to help people, something he truly believed in. Although he gave his all to everything he did, he was most passionate about his work as an emergency medical technician (EMT). When Michael passed away from colon cancer in October 2021, his family turned its grief into an opportunity to help others. The Michael P. McMahon
Scholarshipfor Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was created to help any resident of Lancaster County who wishes to pursue an EMT, Advanced EMT or Paramedic Certification.
Michael was the oldest of four children and the son of Mike and Joanne McMahon. “He was loving, and he was loved by his family and friends,” Mike stated.
Added Joanne, “Michael’s life was so varied. You couldn’t put him in a box. If he was interested in something, he’d do it. … They say it’s the dash between the years on your gravestone that matters. Michael made the most of that dash.”

fourth Thursday of each month from 3 to 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the Hellam Township building, 44 Walnut Springs Road.
The pantry staff and volunteers use a refrigerated van, which can hold up to 90 banana boxes, to transport perishables from the pantry to the drive-through mobile pantry distribution area. Another van carrying nonperishable items and household goods will also deliver items to the distribution site, and fresh produce will be available for people to pick up on-site.
The Catholic Harvest Food Pantry has been in operation since the 1980s, when the local Catholic churches decided to combine their food pantries. It is income-based, and families are eligible to pick up food once a month.
“This is a choice pantry,” Samphilipo said, explaining that clients are emailed a shopping list to fill out and return with the items they’d like to receive. “They can list their likes or dislikes or note if there are allergies,” she stat-
ed. “We get to know our families. If someone can’t eat certain foods for religious or health reasons, we’ll accommodate that. If we have a family that’s gluten-free, we’ll pull aside gluten-free items for them.”
Pantry items include everything from meat and eggs to frozen items and canned goods. Additionally, a variety of household items such as laundry detergent and cleaning products are available, along with pet food and treats. A grant from Community Aid provided an opportunity to stock feminine hygiene products, Midol and incontinence items, and the pantry also provides diapers. “We care for all stages of life, from birth to the elderly,” said Shari Gordon, pantry director. “We’re thankful we’re able to do that.” The pantry also provides a birthday bag, complete with a boxed cake mix and candles, for each family that has a child with a birthday that month.
The York pantry serves more than 750 families a
month, and Samphilipo noted that the number will go up with the mobile pantry, which served 20 families its first week. “The next day after the mobile pantry, I had three voicemails from people who had heard about it from their friends and neighbors,” she said.
As a result of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s A Seat at the Table study, Hel-
lam/Wrightsville was identified as an area with high food insecurity and low access to transportation. The food pantry plans to expand its mobile pantry offering to the southeastern corner of York County beginning in May.
The next mobile pantry distribution in Hellam will be held on Thursday, March 23. Families must preregister to pick up food. For more information or to sign up, call 717846-8571 and select option 3 or email tahanisamphilipo@ catholicharvest.org.

Joanne noted that her freespirited son loved to try new things, but one career path made all the difference.
“Being an EMT and eventually a paramedic changed his life,” she shared. “He grew as a person. It made him who he was.”
When Joanne sat down to write Michael’s obituary, and she got to the part about giving flowers, she had another idea. “She said, ‘Let’s start a scholarship in his name,’” recalled Mike, noting that they asked family members and friends to contribute.
“Our goal is to find as many people to help as we can,” said Joe McMahon, Michael’s brother. “We want to pay for as many as we can and give people the opportunity to do this as a career, to help people to do something every day that they can be proud of.”
Noted Mike, “This is a full scholarship, based on capability and need.” It will cover tuition up to $7,500.
To help develop the scholarship, the McMahon family reached out to the Lancaster County EMS Council, a nonprofit organization made up of representatives from all of the EMS agencies serving

The scholarship is open to both current students and adults. “Michael was kind of a late bloomer, so the ideal candidate could be someone who has stayed home with their kids and now wants to get back into the workforce,” said Michael’s sister Mary Kate Walsh. “Or it could be someone who wants to change careers and needs financial support to do that.”
The scholarship is meant to be a stepping stone into a career that helps people, said Michael’s sister Colleen Murphy, who added, “We need more helpers in the world like my brother.”

Born and raised
BY WENDY ROYALWe are fortunate to live in an area that has long been regarded as the “Garden Spot of America.” Generational farming is a part of the Lancaster County culture. In fact, we lead the nation in young farmers. According to the most recent Economic Impact study by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, 14% of farms in Pennsylvania had a young producer (defined as someone age 35 or younger) operating as the primary farmer. At last count, Lancaster County had 2,400 young producers, twice as much as the second-ranked county in the nation, LaGrange County, Ind. In addition, Lancaster County leads the nation in farmland preservation, with more than 113,000 acres preserved. As promising as that sounds for the future, we’re still losing more than 1,200 acres of Lancaster County farmland each year to development, according to the Lancaster Farmland Trust (LFT), a nonprofit organization with the mission of preserving agriculture and stewarding the land in Lancaster County. For more information on LFT, visit https://lancasterfarmland trust.org.
Farming can be a backbreaking, often undervalued vocation that doesn’t stop at 5 p.m. on Friday. Like we often do with first responders
and the military, thank a farmer for his or her service to our community. Look at labels and buy locally. See where your milk, produce, and meat are coming from. When you shop at local supermarkets, if you don’t see local produce in season, ask why the store isn’t providing locally sourced foods. Encourage the store to offer local produce so shoppers can easily support local farmers.
The Lancaster County landscape is dotted with roadside produce stands when crops are in season. Most of these stands and farmers markets won’t open until later in the spring or summer. Below is a list of some of the many locations where you can get fresh local produce, meats, and cheeses.

Manor Church, 530 Central Manor Road, Lancaster, will host a benefit auction on Saturday, March 25, at 9 a.m. The proceeds from the auction will benefit the church’s youth programs and mission trips, which include students from the Penn Manor, Hempfield and Columbia areas.
All items that will be sold at the auction are being donated from members of the congregation as well as local residents and businesses. Available items will include gift cards, tickets to sporting events, gift baskets,
handmade goods and vouchers for services provided by local residents. Food and beverages will also be available to purchase at the auction, and the proceeds from food sales will also support the church’s youth programs.
Breakfast foods will be served during the morning hours of the event, and lunch items will be sold in the afternoon, until the kitchen closes around 1 p.m.
In July, students in Manor Church’s youth program will embark on a mission trip to Waldorf, Md. The students will assist the community in Waldorf by leading bible stud-
improvement
ies, repairing homes and churches and distributing goods at local food banks.
“These trips are opportunities to give students a greater understanding of what it means to follow Christ and serve others,” said Beau Walmer, student ministries director at Manor Church.
“They also give students a chance to live out the church’s values and experience cultures around the world.”
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Manor Church’s youth group completed mission trips to serve communities in Puerto Rico. After taking a break from traveling over the course of the pandemic, the youth group visited Viper,
Ky., last year. Students completed projects and assisted the residents of Viper, which is located in the rural Appalachian region of the state. Walmer noted that each location for the trip is selected to give the students experience with working in different communities. Since the group visited a remote location like Viper last year, Walmer wanted to take the students to a town like Waldorf, which lies just outside of Washington D.C., “We’re always open to God’s leading and seeing where we feel we’re needed the most,” Walmer said.
In addition to the youth program’s mission trips, students also participate in vari-
partners with another ministry called Connect to the Kingdom to make and distribute meals at Musser Park in Lancaster city. For more information, visit https://manorchurch .org/auction.

Passing around postcards
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDOn the third Monday of each month, the Lancaster County Postcard Club meets at the Farm & Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. During the meetings, which are open to the public, members gather to discuss postcards on a wide variety of topics. Each meeting features a specific theme and includes a talk from a guest speaker who focuses on that theme.
In January, the club creates a schedule of which themes will be incorporated throughout the year, and the topic of the club’s meetings can be anything from railroads to boats to hometowns. For its meeting in January, the club had members share postcards relating to their favorite holidays. On Feb. 20, the topic of the meeting was cartoons and humor, and attendees participated in a member’s market to buy and sell postcards.
Jere Greider of Mountville has been a member of the postcard club for over 20 years, first becoming inter-
ested in them while adding to his collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia. After Greider found a Coca-Cola postcard, he began to shift his focus to collecting postcards from around Lancaster County.
Greider is now a postcard dealer and participates in several yearly shows where postcard enthusiasts come together to buy and sell items for their collections. During the shows, around 25 postcard dealers present boxes of cards that are organized by topic. A buyer will often look for postcards from specific locations, such as his or her hometown or alma mater. Before the advent of different technologies in the 19th century, postcards were a way for travelers to remember a location they visited without a camera. Many people also used them to communicate with others who lived nearby before the invention of the telephone, as a way to stay connected with each other. Today, postcards are primarily found in tourist attractions, but many vintage cards

Some new additions will be Brazilian pretzel pizza at Brazilian Table and smoked Buffalo chicken dip at Tied House, as well as a cannoli pretzel parfait at Piccolo

“Postcards cover every topic imaginable,” Greider said. “We have so many antique stores and outlets here in central Pennsylvania where you can find them.” Besides combing through local antiques stores, Greider often finds items to add to his collection by searching for postcards on websites like eBay. Throughout his many years spent collecting postcards, Greider has learned
more about the market and what people are seeking. Currently, he is focused on collecting postcards that originate from the Mountville area and the surrounding towns.
During the March meeting, set for Monday, March 20, at 7 p.m., the Lancaster County Postcard Club will share postcards from various places of worship. For more information, search for “Lancaster County Postcard Club” on Facebook.

Educators, criminal justice professionals, and social service providers interact every day with students or clients who have difficulty with substance use, gambling, or mental health symptoms. This conference is designed to provide practical tools and encouragement for those working in these professions and equip them to guide community members toward improved health and resilience.

Egg hunt set for children with special needs
Now I Can Foundation Northeast will hold its inaugural Special Needs Egg Hunt on Wednesday, March 22, at 5:30 p.m. on the grounds of Listrak, 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz. All children with special needs age 18 and under and their siblings are invited to attend.
The hunt will be divided into four areas: one for people with mobility issues; an area for participants with visual impairment, which will use beeping eggs; a “quiet and calm” area; and a traditional large group scramble.
The event is free and open to the public, and parking is
available. Participants should bring their own baskets. The egg hunt will be held outside, weather permitting, or inside in the case of inclement weather. Guest author Sally McKinney will read stories aloud and share her new book.
Preregistration is required. For more information and to register, visit https://eggstra hunt.splashthat.com/. Information about this event is also available by emailing allison@nowican.org.
Based in Orem, Utah, Now I Can focuses on the intensive model of physical therapy, which is used to treat children with cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular disorders. Now I Can Northeast serves clients throughout the northeast region of Pennsylvania. The center has operated out of space in the Listrak headquarters since 2022. To learn more, visit https://nowican.org /pennsylvania-location.

Several years ago, two local families donated a large amount of money to The Salvation Army. The organization decided to use the donation to create The Olga Ruth Stratton and Thomas E. Wolf Scholarship, which will benefit a select group of applicants from schools across the county.
The scholarship was created to assist students of lowto moderate-income households to receive a higher education, whether through earning a college degree or earning a trade. In order to be eligible to receive the scholarship, students must
be Lancaster County residents, demonstrate a need for financial assistance, have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher and be graduating seniors, among other requirements. Each student must submit a high school transcript, an academic recommendation letter, a community service-related recommendation letter and a one-page essay describing his or her career goals. For more information, visit www.salvationarmylancaster .org or contact 717-3977565. The deadline to submit an application is Monday, March 20.
Once students submit their applications and the
necessary documents, The Salvation Army will review them and schedule an interview with the students who qualify at its location at 131 S. Queen St., Lancaster. During the interview, each student will describe his or her vision and career plan and detail what school and major he or she has in mind. The Salvation Army will provide assistance beyond the scholarship itself by helping the students to locate additional resources that will help with secondary education.
“We believe in education and the next generation,” said Shady Boules, operations and development manager at The Salvation Army. “Going
to college isn’t an easy decision to make and it’s not cheap. We believe that once students finish school and begin working, they will be in a position to give back to their communities.”
In previous years, The Salvation Army offered small scholarships to local students. The organization recently welcomed aboard many new officers who have decided to make a more concerted effort to support students in the county. The Salvation Army’s goal is to continue to award the scholarship to 15 students in Lancaster County each year.
The Salvation Army offers various other programs to Lancaster County residents throughout the year. On Fridays, the organization distributes food to over 100 local families, providing them with a box of essentials such as bread, soup, sandwiches, rice and breakfast items. The Salvation Army also provides financial assistance to families that need help paying for rent and utilities. Through the nonprofit’s Pathway of Hope program, families can receive financial and life coaching resources through lessons that cover topics such as budgeting, applying to jobs and creating resumes.
“We hope that one day, the people who we help will give back to the community when they can by assisting those in need,” Boules said.
