Hop Into The Market House ou’re invited to “Hop Into the Market House” when Vintage Revival Market hosts a pop-up event on Friday, April 8, and Saturday, April 9. The festivities will take place behind Third Street Vintage, 17-19 S. Third St., Columbia, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, the event will take place inside the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., as well as in the outside adjacent area, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. “There will be a lot of vintage and handmade items featured, in addition to the permanent tenants at the market,” said Debra Luther, market facilitator. “It’s a lot of variety.” Vintage Revival Market began in 2009, when a bunch of likeminded people got together to share things they found at auctions and thrift stores, Luther stated. “They’d meet in a

Walmart parking lot, pop their trunks and sell their things,” she explained. Eventually, the group moved its event to a church in Akron before the people who originated the idea asked Luther to take it over in 2018. “I was reluctant, because I’m not a vintage expert,” she said, noting that she operates her own business of handmade items. Under Luther’s direction, Vintage Revival Market has grown from about 30 vendors to upward of 70 and is held regularly at the Shops at Rockvale in Lancaster. W hen Luther moved to Columbia, she contacted the market house about opening a stand there for her business. “We started talking about bringing Vintage Revival Market in instead,” she said. “It’s a nice way to bring more shoppers into the market.” The first Vintage Revival Market was held at the Columbia Market House in February. “It was a huge success,” Luther said. Time is on Rory McEvoy’s mind. As the new executive director of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors Inc. (NAWCC), McEvoy will oversee the operations of the Columbia headquarters and continue to connect with watch and clock enthusiasts around the world. McEvoy brings a wealth of experience in horology, the study of timekeeping, clocks and watches. Prior to joining NAWCC, he lived in England, where he taught horological theory and history and the practical repair and making of clocks and watches at

Get Hooked On Fishing

To hear Brian Cunningham tell it, there is nothing better than fishing. As the president of the Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA), he not only gets to participate in the activity he loves, but he also gets to encourage the next generation to embrace the sport. The DFCA will host its annual Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday, April 9, from 8 to 11 a.m. The event will be held at the reflecting pool on the grounds of Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, and is open to children age 11 and under. Also welcome will be all handicapped anglers who possess a current Pennsylvania fishing license. The church will host a pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. in the fellowship hall, and it will be open to derby participants and the public. “The derby is an opportunity to get kids and families outside and interested in fishing,” Cunningham stated, adding that the event also serves to teach participants about trout manage-

the DFCA has been holding the derby in this location for about 20 years. “This is a great opportunity to teach young children about fishing, teach them how to catch the fish, hold the fish and respect the sport,” he remarked. “Parents and guardians can take the fish home and show the children how to clean, prepare and make a meal out of the fish. Fishing is a lifelong sport where you can go anywhere in the world and share this experience and joy with fellow fishermen.” The DFCA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring the Donegal watershed to its original
ment and introduce families to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Derby participants should bring their own equipment and clean their own fish. “We encourage the families to take what they catch up to a five-fish limit,” Cunningham said. The DFCA will stock hundreds of brook, rainbow, golden and brown trout for participants to catch and take home, including three large golden trout for prizes, Cunningham stated. Winners will receive a new fishing pole and accessories, donated by Precision Fly and Tackle in Lancaster. Cunningham noted that

Cunningham hopes people will come out to the derby to participate in a sport that’s among his favorites. “For me and a large amount of our members, getting outside along a stream and the challenge of catching some of the most beautiful species of fish in PA (is what I love),” he said. “The thrill of the hook set and landing a stream-bred brook trout is the top of the list.” For more information on the fishing derby, contact Cunningham at 717413-7454. This is why I strongly believe it is critically important to promote and deliver the NAWCC’s core values and strengthen its foundations for the future study of clocks and watches.” As McEvoy and his wife, Kaai, settle into their new home, he admits there have been some moments of culture shock. “I’ve been a bit confused about the weather I’ve experienced so far,” he said with a laugh. “I’ve seen winter, summer and spring all rolled into one.” He’s also learning that being from England means needing to modify his vocabulary for American colleagues, noting, “There’s the joke that we both speak the same language, but neither of us understands each other.” Still, he’s excited about his new role and he’s enjoying living in Lancaster County. “I really love the community here and the people,” he stated. “Columbia has a lot to offer.” For more information on the NAWCC, visit www.nawcc.org.
Market from pg 1 Along with vintage and handmade items, the pop-up will feature Fetish Brewing Company, a Lititz-based brewery. Luther noted the brewery will serve beermosas, a mix of beer and freshsqueezed blood orange juice. “They were very popular at the February event,” she said. Additionally, Crazy Goat Coffee Company will host a coffee cart, featuring a variety of drinks. Luther said her motto for Vintage Revival Market is “bringing the community
together, one market at a time,” and she hopes the Columbia pop-up event will do just that. “ We want to bring people together to have fun, meet new people and shop with small businesses,” she said. “It’s about encouraging people to shop local and to take advantage of the stores and businesses near the Market House as well. It’s a way to get to know the community.” For more information, search for “Vintage Revival Market” on Facebook.

He is especially proud of the school that is located on-site, offering introductory hands-on courses in clocks, watches and machining. “I think this place has been one of Columbia’s, if not Pennsylvania’s, best-kept secrets,” he stated. “One of my priorities here is to raise awareness of what we do and get the community involved.” He said he’s still planning specifics for connecting with the community, but he hopes to continue popular events such as Hops ’n’ Clocks, a collaboration with local microbreweries. “For me, the most rewarding part of my work is community - meeting people along the way and sharing passions for collecting and knowledge,” McEvoy noted. “Ours is a big subject that intersects with every aspect of life, and we as individuals cannot hope to know it all.
