Trashion Fashion Show will highlight sustainability Arbor Day Celebration will bring community together
Theysay one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, but on Saturday, April 22, some of that trash will become fashion. The Trashion Fashion Show will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. at Switchboard Studios & Gallery, 40 N. Third St., second floor, Columbia. Organized by Columbia’s Movers and Shakers Society, the festivities will put a spotlight on creativity and sustainability.
As Kim Morrow, event co-chair, explained, the Trashion Fashion Show encourages artists of various ages and skill levels to create original clothing designs from recycled and thrifted materials.
“We’ll start the evening off at 5 p.m., when people can come in and the participants will be dressed, and anybody who wants to talk to the participants can do that while our judges have time to interview the participants, learn about them and learn about what they did to create their costume,” Morrow explained. A DJ will provide music, and light refreshments will be offered. The runway show will begin at 6 p.m., followed by time for the judges to make their decisions and the announcement of the winners. Prizes will be awarded for first place in the categories of age 10 and under, ages 11 to 17 and age 18 and above.
This is the second year Columbia has hosted this event, which is co-chaired by Mychal LaVia of Columbia Creative Factory. “We’re trying to grow the event,” Morrow stated. “Last year, we had 11 participants, and they were judged by three people. ... We had a pretty big crowd for last year’s event.”
Proceeds from the Trashion Fashion Show will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Lancaster - Columbia Clubhouse. Last year, the event raised $400 for the organization, providing funding for music and art materials, supplies and programming.
Columbia’s Movers and Shakers Society is a group of community members, business owners, artists and volunteers who want to shake things up and make things happen in Columbia, Morrow said. She hopes the Trashion Fashion Show will attract a large crowd again this year, noting, “It’s just an unusual and unique event. It’s something fun to do on a Saturday night.”
Advance tickets to the show are available for a discount. Tickets will also be sold at the door. For more information on the event or to order tickets, email cmss17512@gmail.com or call 717-517-2442.
BY CATHY MOLITORISFor more than three decades, Columbia has been recognized by the national Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA, thanks to the efforts of the Columbia Borough Shade Tree Commission, the Columbia Tree Society and the Columbia Park Rangers. The groups will hold the 31st annual Arbor Day Celebration at Zion Hill Cemetery, 553 N. Fifth St., Columbia, on Friday, April 28. The event will begin at 6 p.m.
Established in 1920, the cemetery was the primary burial ground for Columbia’s Black population into the 1940s. Chris Vera, president of the Columbia Historic Preservation Society, will serve as master of ceremonies for the Arbor Day event, said event organizer Bill Kloidt, who noted that the society has taken an active role in restoring the cemetery over the past few years.
At the Arbor Day event, the Rev. Patricia S. McAllister, pastor of Mount Zion AME Church in Columbia, will offer an invocation and benediction. Amy Evans, chair of the Columbia Borough Shade Tree Commission, will give welcoming remarks. Columbia Mayor Leo Lutz will present the Arbor Day proclamation, and

The celebration will also include cash prizes awarded to the top three winners of a coloring contest open to second-grade students at Our Lady of the Angels School and Park Elementary School. Columbia High School concert choir members will perform musical selections under the direction of Elizabeth Baker. Boy Scout Troop 35 and Cub Scout Pack 35 will open the ceremony with the Pledge of Allegiance. Frontier Girls Troops 191 and 202 will assist in the distribution of program booklets.
Smokey Bear, portrayed by Brian Rhoads of Northern Lancaster County Forest Fire Company, and Johnny Appleseed, portrayed by Ryan Shoff, will also be present, and Shoff will hand out apples to children in attendance.
“This year’s ceremony will be dedicated to Cliff Edmond and Sam Edmond,” Kloidt shared. “Cliff was instrumental in documenting and identifying grave sites in the cemetery to preserve its history, and Sam (will be recognized) for his community service work.” Sandra Duncan will also be recognized for serving

Gravesite cleaning project planned
“Honoring Our Fallen,” a gravesite maintenance event, will take place at Mount Bethel Cemetery, 700 Locust St., Columbia, on Saturday and Sunday, April 22 and 23, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
Mount Bethel Cemetery is the final resting place for more than 683 veterans. While some of these graves do not have tombstones, the veterans’ gravesites that do have markers will be the focus of the event, which is being planned by Ryan Sexton, Mount Bethel Cemetery’s new superintendent.
Sexton invites the community and military veterans to assist. The goal of the project is to clean all of the veterans’ headstones. No prior experience is necessary, and gloves and brushes will be provided.
In the event of rain, the event will take place the following weekend.
Mount Bethel Cemetery noted that Hinkle’s Restaurant, Columbia Water Company, and D2 Biological Solutions donated to this event.

To begin, the class will focus on the design aspect of a food forest, highlighting the various types of trees and shrubs that can be used, as well as their heights, shapes, spacing and light requirements, all of which should be taken into consideration when organizing the forest garden layout. Once participants master configuration, the class will take a hands-on approach to learning by participating in a tree planting using some of the aforementioned species to practice agroforestry skills and help to expand the food forest at the Horn Farm.
In partnership with the York
County Solid Waste Authority, Backyard Composting, a comprehensive, skill-building workshop that emphasizes affordability and simplicity, will be offered on Thursday, April 20, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. This is a hands-on workshop and will include plenty of time during the process to ask questions.
The class will first choose a site for a new compost pile and construct a bin using welded wire fencing that creates a cylinder. Participants will add appropriate materials and work with an existing compost pile. Ways to utilize finished compost, vermicomposting, mulching methods, and ways to reduce yard waste will be discussed.
Each participant will leave with a 12-foot roll of welded wire that can be set up and utilized immediately and a composting brochure that highlights details that were covered in the class.
