Put Local Produce On Your Plate BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Artist Joanna Spicer will exhibit her work at a fundraiser for Mount Bethel Cemetery.

Art Exhibit Will Benefit Mount Bethel Cemetery BY CATHY MOLITORIS

oanna Spicer believes art can bring people together. “Community outreach and work is important to me,” said the textile artist. “Art is a therapeutic, friendly and fun way for me to connect with others.” Spicer will showcase her work in an exhibit titled “A Spice of Life” in the cottage at Mount Bethel Cemetery, 700 Locust St., Columbia. The exhibit will be held on Friday, April 23, from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Sunday, April 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. Spicer’s exhibit will be a fundraiser for the cemetery, which relies on funding for a variety of reasons. “Nonprofit organizations such as the Mount Bethel Cemetery had to cancel all fundraising events (this past year) due to the pandemic,” said Claire Storm, a member of the cemetery board of directors. “Although most of the work to keep the cemetery in pristine condition is performed by volunteers, there are other expenses that are supported by fundraisers.” Money from the event will be raised by the sale of Spicer’s artwork as well as by

“Not only is the show a great opportunity for community outreach, but it’s also an opportunity to support a group that preserves the history of our town.” “I’ll be showcasing a variety of weavings and fabric pieces and possibly some prints,” she said. In addition to working with the cemetery committee, Spicer has organized other art events for local individuals and organizations, and she works with the Lancaster Office of Aging and Lancaster Creative Factory as an online art instructor for senior classes.

She also completed two murals in Columbia - one at Coffee and Cream café and one at Locust Street Park. Spicer said supporting the Mount Bethel Cemetery is important because the site has historic significance in the community. According to the nonprofit’s website, the cemetery dates to the 1720s and is the oldest burial ground in continuous use in the Columbia area. “Not only is the show a great opportunity for community outreach, but it’s also an opportunity to support a group that preserves the history of our town so that the younger generation will have an idea of the importance of these places,” Spicer stated. “It’s also a great opportunity to come to a place that’s part of the local community and to spotlight the work that people do behind the scenes to keep things running at the cemetery.” All visitors to “A Spice of Life” are asked to wear a mask, and a limit of 10 people will be allowed to enter the cottage at one time. Light refreshments will be available under a tent at the exhibit’s exit.

Campbell said the Horn Farm began offering the CSA to meet community requests. “There’s definitely an interest within the community for the CSA,” she stated. “The CSA model is a great way for the local community to support local farmers. This year in particular, there’s a lot of uncertainty on a global scale in the food industry, and the CSA gives people a lot of solace in knowing who their farmer is and where their food is coming from. It gives them a way to become better connected to their local food system.” See Horn Farm pg 2

The Horn Farm’s CSA program will feature a variety of seasonal produce.

Creating Art “En Plein Air” BY CATHY MOLITORIS

For the next few weeks, don’t be surprised to see artists painting at spots all throughout Marietta, Columbia and Wrightsville. They are part of the first River Towns Plein Air event. The event will feature artists painting “en plein air,” or outdoors, through Wednesday, April 21. The public is invited to watch the painting, and the final products will be displayed at an art show and competition at Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., on Friday, April 23, through Sunday, April 25.

Spicer, who teaches art at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School in Columbia, has helped the cemetery committee with numerous fundraisers over the years, although this will be her first time exhibiting her own work at the cottage.

The Friends of the Mount Bethel Cemetery, who host community art events like this one, will hold a fundraiser art exhibit later this month.

There is a simple way to support local agriculture in York County, and it starts at the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education. The Horn Farm, 4945 Horn Road, York, will offer its community-supported agriculture (CSA) program for the fifth year this summer, inviting members to purchase weekly boxes of locally grown, farm-fresh produce. “As a CSA member, or ‘shareholder,’ customers can expect to enjoy a wide variety of seasonal, organically grown produce such as greens - lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard and kale - (and) tomatoes, sweet peppers, garlic, beets, summer and winter squash and potatoes,” said Alexis Campbell, executive director of the Horn Farm. Shares may also include fruits such as strawberries, watermelon and cantaloupe.

The CSA program also helps the Horn Farm further its mission. “Our goal is to restore soil health, protect our waterways and increase ecological biodiversity while growing healthy food and teaching others to do the same,” Campbell noted. The farm is partnering with farmer Jeremy Kilgore to provide even more options for more people through the CSA. “With two farmers (Kilgore and the Horn Farm) producing fruits and vegetables for the CSA, we hope to be able to increase the number of shares available,” Campbell explained. Book Sale And Auction Will Support Library BY CATHY MOLITORIS

“Anything you might find in the library, we’ll have it here,” said Betty Bell, describing what to expect at the Kreutz Creek Library book sale. The sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, April 23, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 24, at the Hellam Township Public Works building, 44 Walnut Springs Road, York. Bell, who is co-president of the Friends of Kreutz Creek Library along

with Elizabeth McKonly, said the book sale is more important to the library this year than ever. “We usually have a sale in the spring and in the fall, but we weren’t able to have either this past year due to COVID,” she explained. Funds from the sale help support library programs, purchase books and more. The sale will feature a wide variety of items, Bell said, including hardback and paperback books, children’s books, cookbooks, DVDs, audiobooks and jigsaw puzzles.

“We’ll have used books, but we also have a lot of books from the last five years or so,” she noted. “We have books that came out in 2020 and even in 2021. You’re going to see things you haven’t seen before.” In addition to the book sale, the library will hold an online auction on Facebook that will open at 8 p.m. on April 24 and run through 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 1. “We’re trying to come up with different ways to raise funds, and this went over really well the last time we did this,” said Linda Nevers, auction coordinator. The first auction was held in 2019 and included more than 100 items donated by local individuals and businesses. “We’ll have gift certificates to local restaurants and businesses, purses, artwork and lots more,” Nevers stated. “We try to get a vari-

ety of items, from lower-priced things to higher prices, so that everybody can bid on something.” This is an exciting year for the library, Bell noted, adding that after 42 years in its current location, the branch will be moving into a much larger space in the near future. “We’re going from 1,200 square feet to about 6,200 square feet,” she said. The new site is located at the former Hellam Township building adjacent to the library’s current home. For the book sale, Bell said mask wearing and social distancing are encouraged. Donations are currently being accepted for auction items as well. Donations may be dropped off at the library, or arrangements for drop-off may be made through the online auction site at www.face book.com/KCLAuction2021/.

DreamWrights Will Present “The COVID Chronicles”

DreamWrights Center for Community Arts will present “The COVID Chronicles” on its outdoor stage on Friday, April 23. BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Even in the midst of a difficult year, there are reasons to smile. That’s the message behind “The COVID Chronicles,” a show written by community members. It will be presented on the outdoor stage at DreamWrights Center for Community Arts, 100 Carlisle Ave., York, at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 23. “This is a show written from stories submitted by the community and then adapted to the stage as short scenes and vignettes,” explained Jay Schmuck, technical director. “We asked for submissions from the entire York community and beyond, with some targeted asks to specific friends and creatives.” Auditions and rehearsals for the show were held by “bubble casting,” meaning the cast consists of pairs or groups of people who have been in close contact over the past year. “We felt like we weren’t ready to bring in people from all over to rehearse together just yet, so we came up with using the idea of the

bubble,” Schmuck remarked. “Throughout COVID, there has been talk of keeping your bubble small, your bubble being a social or family group that have all been around each other and feel safe being together without masks.” This is the first time the theater has performed a show written entirely from community input, he noted. The show will be directed by Schmuck, Chris Velez and Jaci Keagy. Schmuck said he’s excited about the opportunity to use the venue’s outdoor stage for a full production. “Last year on the stage, we hosted regular open mic nights and an improv night, but this is the first full production show on the outdoor stage and its return for the 2021 outdoor season,” he stated. The theater has other outdoor productions planned for the spring and summer, including a Drive-In Cabaret on Friday, May 7, which is also the date of Give Local York. Additionally, open mic nights will be returning this summer. See DreamWrights pg 4

(MAA), a group that promotes the enjoyment, creation and awareness of visual arts and has partnered with Rivertownes PA USA for this event. “Plein air is becoming a really big thing with artists across the country,” said Marita Hines, a member of MAA. “I’ve participated in plein air art competitions regionally, and many of the other artists participating in this event have also.” When the members of MAA came up with the idea for the event, they weren’t sure how it would be received by the art community. They were pleasantly surprised. “We have 60 artists participating, and we had to cut it off at 60,” Hines stated. “We

Proceeds from sales of artwork will benefit Marietta Community House. The location is the original home of the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, and the school will partner with MAA to offer a free intergenerational plein air drawing session from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on April 24 outside across the street from the exhibit space. The rain date for the class will be April 25. Hines said painting en plein air provides artists with a unique way to create their works. “It’s a challenging way to paint,” she explained. “Factors like the weather and wind can make it challenging. The shadows change, too, so what you’re painting may look one way and then an hour later, it looks very different.” For more information on River Towns Plein Air, visit the aforementioned website or www.facebook .com/MariettaArtAlive, where updates on artist locations will be posted daily during the event.
