Columbia Will Host May Day Celebration BY CATHY MOLITORIS
or more than 75 years, May Day has been a tradition at Columbia High School. After a hiatus and an adjustment during the pandemic, the event has returned to full force and will be held on Sunday, May 1, in the gym at Columbia High School, 901 Ironville Pike. The celebration will begin at 7 p.m. “This year marks the 77th year,” said junior Emily Gambler, who is helping to organize the event. “May Day celebrates the coming of the spring. It brings together the community, students and parents.” As Gambler explained, each year, a junior and a sophomore work alongside each other and a committee filled with members of the community to plan May Day. “In this event, seniors get chosen by their peers to participate in the May court,” Gambler noted. “The girls choose a male senior to escort them. They participate in a waltz dance.”

“This is a chance to learn about our history,” said Autumn Kingsboro, describing Mayfest, a Maytown-centered festival that will be held on Saturday, May 7. “You will get that sense of going back in time and you’ll actually get to walk through the town and see that history revived.” Mayfest will be held in and around the Maytown Square from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Although the See Festival pg 3

Members of the May Day court are Morgan Bigler, Sarah Hollerbush, Brynn Spiese, Shai Madison, princess Isabelle Redding, Alayna Morales, Kylie Aston, Leah Fry and Sidney Berntheizel. Their escorts will be Luke Redding, Joel Ober, Robert Footman, Andrew Eitnier, Drew Paules, Noe Moreta, Collin McCarty, Israel Perez and Ethan Schmitt. Additionally, students of the senior class at Columbia vote on a May queen, who is announced before the waltz, and then students from Columbia School District are invited to dance in a traditional maypole dance. “This engages students of all ages in the tradition,” Gambler noted. Each year, the committee also chooses entertainment for the court. “This year, students from Columbia High School will be singing,” Gambler remarked. A baton performance will also be spotlighted. The May Day committee extends an invitation to the community to attend and support the celebration. There is a fee to attend, with separate fees set for adults and for students and seniors.

Singers Announce Tour Schedule LeeP Productions will present “Then Sings My Soul: Beloved Hymns & Songs Inspired by the Ministry of Billy Graham” at locations across central Pennsylvania and beyond throughout 2022. “Then Sings My Soul” is an original musical presentation featuring professional vocalists as well as accompanists from the Lancaster area. Highlighting important moments in the Rev. Billy Graham’s ministry, it includes a look at the history behind over 30 well-known hymns and songs of faith, many of which were made famous by or were written by people who accepted Jesus at Graham’s Crusades. Selections include “How Great Thou Art,” “I’d Rather Have Jesus,” “His Eye Is on the Sparrow,” and “Amazing Grace.” The production also includes an old-fashioned hymn sing. “Then Sings My Soul” features Lancaster locals Daniel Gorham, Sarah Poague, Kat Prickett, and Ric Zimmerman. Katrina King, an 18-year-old New Holland-area resident, is the pianist.
Now in its fourth year of touring, “Then Sings My Soul” premiered in August 2018 in a barn at writer and producer Prickett’s family business, The Red Caboose Motel & Restaurant in Ronks. It has since toured across Pennsylvania and New Jersey and to Dollywood Theme Park in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. The performers seek not only to entertain audiences, but also to educate them on hymns and their history, share the Gospel message, and honor Graham’s memory. In 2022, the program will travel to numerous churches, events and
retirement communities in the Lancaster, York, Cumberland, Lebanon and Berks County areas, as well as the historic 6,000-seat Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove, N.J., where Graham preached several times throughout his ministry. Bob Neff Tours will provide motorcoach transportation for the concert on Sunday, July 24. The outing will include roundtrip transportation, a morning worship service, free time in Ocean Grove, and admission to the 7 p.m. concert, which will also

event has a long history, this is the first time it’s being held since 2018, Kingsboro said, adding, “We are really excited to bring it back.” This year’s theme for Mayfest is “Celebrate Maytown!” and everything about the event highlights that idea. Festivities will include a self-guided tour of Maytown, food, demonstrations, vendors and more. “New this year, we’re partnering with a car dealership in town, Siegrist Automotive, for a car show,” Kingsboro stated. “We’re also adding a scavenger hunt for children, and we’re hoping that can be a family event, where people can walk around the town and read signs depicting the history of Maytown.” Scavenger hunt participants will receive a wooden nickel to spend at the kids’ craft area in the square or at the Penny Candy Shoppe set up for the day. Tours will be offered of historic properties in Maytown, including the Old Maytown Bank, 13 W. High St., which is now The Bank House Airbnb, and the Frank-Brown Garage, in the rear of 100 S. Four Scouts from Troop 25 in East York have earned the highest advancement rank in Scouts BSA the Eagle Scout. Bronson Gordon, Dominic Maiolino, Nathaniel “Nate” Mitchell, and Sawyer Zimmer received their awards from Troop 25 Scoutmaster Perry Bevivino during a Court of Honor on Feb. 22 in the fellowship hall of Advent Lutheran Church in York. For his Eagle Scout project, Bronson, son of Tammy and Lonny Gordon, remodeled several bathrooms and repaired and repainted a water-damaged hallway at Mount Zion United Church of Christ on Ridgewood Road in York. Carried out between January 2020 and January 2021, the project took approximately 150 hours to complete. After raising the necessary funds, Bronson and his volunteers repainted ceilings, walls, and bathroom stalls; installed a new bathroom vanity; and replaced floor molding along with new accessories in the bathrooms. Bronson joined Troop 25 in sixth grade, has earned 33 merit

badges, and is a member of the Order of the Arrow (OA), Scouts BSA’s national honor society. Bronson graduated from Central York High School in 2021. He is currently a WellSpan employee and plans to attend York College of Pennsylvania’s nursing program in the fall. For his Eagle Scout Project, Dominic, son of Erin and Ralph Maiolino, converted an old classroom in a school building into a youth chapel for the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Oxford. This project included painting the walls, refreshing the floors, and installing an altar in the room, and it took 182 hours for Dominic and his family and friends to complete. Dominic started his Scouting journey as a Cub Scout and then crossed over to Troop 97 in New Salem, where he earned 18 merit badges. Dominic then moved to Troop 25 as a First Class Scout in 2019 and earned three more merit badges, for a total of 21. Dominic graduated from Spring Grove High School in 2021 and is currently a sophomore at York College of Pennsylvania, where he is studying English. For his Eagle Scout project, Nate, son of Alice and Darius Mitchell, repainted the blacktop games and courts at Stony Brook Elementary School in East York and added two new painted games and one painted solar system. Nate supervised fellow Scouts and adults in the 141-hour service project, which took place in
July 2021. Having started as a Tiger Cub, Nate has been a Scout for 10 years, has earned 23 merit badges, and is a member of OA. Nate is a sophomore at Central York High School. He is interested in attending a university through the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program and becoming a commissioned officer in the military upon graduation from college. For his Eagle Scout project, Sawyer, son of Tracy Coleman and Daren Zimmer, improved the aesthetics of the outside landscaping behind the administration building at John Rudy Park in York. This project involved rebuilding the existing brick sidewalk and adding a section of sidewalk off the side porch. Sawyer and his adult and Scout helpers also rebuilt and
secured the rock wall around the mulch beds, updated a directional sign to reflect the correct mileage, and replaced and repainted boards. The project took a total of 200 hours. Having started as a Tiger Cub, Sawyer has been in Scouting for 10 years, has earned 22 merit badges, and is a member of OA. Sawyer is a sophomore at Central York High School, where he is active in the music program and track and field. He plans to attend a higher education institution and possibly work toward a career playing a drum in an armed forces musical ensemble. State Reps. Keith Gillespie, Stan Saylor, and Seth Grove all attended the Court of Honor and presented each Scout from their districts with a Pennsylvania House citation and a personal letter. Representatives of the Marine Corps League and the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution also attended and presented the Scouts with certificates of recognition. The new Eagle Scouts received Certificates of Special Congressional Recognition from U.S. Rep. Scott Perry and American flags that had flown over the U.S. Capitol. Scouts BSA Troop 25 is sponsored by and meets at Yorkshire United Methodist Church, 125 Edgewood Road, York. Meetings take place on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 8 p.m. in the fellowship hall. You can spend money on car repair insurance or maintain your vehicle on a regular schedule. With preventive maintenance you will avoid large repair bills that your insurance may not cover. And extend the life of your vehicle. Belts for instance: Technician Bryan Douts says,

Thursdays. Morales would like to add a second early morning deployment in the city of Lancaster where children could shower prior to school. She would also like to find places in Solanco, Pequea Valley, and East Lampeter to offer the service. The unit offers two private showers to accommodate families and children, along with clean towels and toiletry kits. Women’s hygiene kits, made up by the Lancaster Pilot Club, include encouraging cards, nail files, wipes, mouthwash, lip balm, shampoo, and conditioner. Items for men include razors and shave gel. “We have socks, underwear, bras, undershirts, and we have some things for children too,” stated Morales, who added that a partnership with GROVE, a cleaning supply company, helps stock the kits and provides cleaning supplies for families. The unit also offers pregnancy tests and resources. But Refresh is more than just a place to freshen up. Lancaster EMS offers a community care medicine program, which visits homes of those referred by Lancaster General Health or who qualify under insurance. “The goal is to help prevent unnecessary hospital stays,” said
Morales, who noted limiting emergency room visits is another aim of the program. “I am fully capable and stocked to monitor vitals and in the near future, we will be doing diabetic screenings through (Lancaster General Health),” said Morales, who also has phlebotomy training, but noted she would need to be informed ahead of the need for a blood draw. “If someone is in a diabetic emergency, I have glucose to try to help reverse that,” she added. “We have ways to help with medical aspects.” While the trailer can carry 40 gallons of water, Morales noted it is better to hook up to a water source at the location than to haul water, so weather is sometimes an issue. “If it’s below freezing, we will not deploy because our water lines will freeze,” she explained, adding that another issue is high winds that make it difficult to haul the trailer safely. “If we don’t bring the trailer, I will still go out in the truck or the ambulance or another vehicle to at least provide medical attention,” said Morales. Readers who would like to know more about the program may call 717-690-6538 or email alexandra_morales@lemsa.com.
