HARC, West Hempfield Sign Parks Agreement In recent years, the Hempfield Area Recreation Commission (HARC) has been doing business as the Hempfield recCenter. HARC has now grown beyond the athletic complex at 950 Church St., Landisville, by assuming responsibility for the parks of West Hempfield Township as well as one in Mountville borough. “We want to get outside our four walls,” explained HARC director Jeffrey Book. “We’re looking to expand our presence in the community.” HARC is an intergovernmental cooperative composed of Hempfield School District, East Hempfield and West Hempfield townships, and the boroughs of Mountville and East Petersburg. Accepting oversight of the parks is an organic part of that relationship. “HARC is essentially our Parks and Recreation Department,” West Hempfield Township manager Andrew Stern explained. “It was natural, instead of expanding our department, to have HARC take over that function.” The management and maintenance agreement between HARC and West Hempfield Township specifies that HARC will be responsible for managing employees and independent contractors who take care of the parks; scheduling reservations for the parks’ pavilions, open spaces, fields, and other amenities; providing reasonably priced programs in the parks; carrying out routine repairs and maintenance; opening the restroom facilities at the parks each day; and having a licensed inspector perform monthly checks to ensure safety. Additionally, HARC personnel will attend quarterly meetings with township officials and provide detailed reports of all the fees and operation costs associated with running the parks. In return, West Hempfield Township will retain ownership of the parks and will
be responsible for providing, maintaining, and fueling vehicles and equipment HARC needs to maintain the parks; supplying personnel to help HARC staffers mulch the playgrounds; planning, paying for, and building capital improvements and non-routine repair work; and removing snow at all the parks. Both entities will add the other to their respective liability insurance policies. The agreement lays out a schedule of payments from the township to HARC for overhead costs and administrative fees through 2020. The total for 2019 is $111,500, and the amount set for 2020 will not exceed $115,960, which is a 4-percent increase. As the end of 2020 draws near, the agreement will be evaluated and renewed, amended, or dissolved. Dissolution would be a last resort. “We hope (the partnership) will extend well into the future,” Stern said. “This is truly a partnership. It’s in no one’s interest to fail.” Four major parks and five tot lots are included in the agreement. These are Silver Spring Park, Fairview Park, Ironville Park, and Lake Grubb Nature Park, as well as the housing development-based parks
of Cedar Bluff, Bridge Valley, Falcon Ridge, Eagles View, and Murry Ridge. HARC director of programs Cristine Maser said that she has already begun hosting outdoor programs, starting with a nature walk at Lake Grubb. The programs are open to the public, and people need not be Hempfield recCenter members to participate. Small fees will be associated with some programs. “We will be focusing on improving the aesthetics (of the parks) and encouraging people to use (the parks) and enjoy the natural environment,” Maser said. She noted that venturing outside is not really a new idea for HARC, as the organization has held summer programs at Silver Spring Park for 41 years. In addition to planning programs, Maser will be in charge of scheduling rentals of the pavilions and other amenities; she may be reached at 717-8983102, ext. 139, or cmaser@hempfield rec.com. For general inquiries about the agreement, readers may contact Book at 717-898-3102, ext. 136, or jbook@ hempfieldrec.com or Stern at 717-285-5554 or manager@westhempfield.org.

The plant sale sponsored by Penn State Master Gardeners of Lancaster County will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 8 a.m. until sold out at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. This year, items for sale will include “plants of merit” selected by the Philadelphia Horticultural Society, Mt. Cuba, Penn State Flower Trials, Perennial Plant Association and Ohio State. Another feature this year will be planting designs and prepacked groups of plants for mailbox, pollinator, and container gardens. The sale will also include numerous varieties of native plants, plants for sun, plants for shade, pollinators, perennials, and annuals. As in years past, there will also be hundreds of plants grown by Master Gardeners. Selected tomato and pepper varieties grown from seed by Master Gardeners will be available as well. The Garden Shed will feature gently used garden tools, containers, and accessories. Although the plant sale will open its doors at 8 a.m., the Garden Shed will open at 7:30 a.m. Soil test kits and an information desk where people may ask garden questions will also be part of the event. Payment with cash and checks is preferred, but credit card payments will be accepted. Presented by Penn State Master Gardeners of Lancaster County, the sale supports the group’s many programs offered to the community, including a Garden Hotline, demonstration gardens, and youth garden programs. event. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is the main provider of charitable food in York County. Partnerships with more than 120 agencies like food pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, and more throughout the county have enabled millions of pounds of food to be distributed to York Countians struggling with hunger. In many cases, we provide these partners with more than 80 percent of the food they distribute to those in need in the area. Donations through Give Local York can help us provide even more nutritious foods to our neighbors in need in York County. We are committed to providing healthy fruits and vegetables, dairy, and center-of-theplate protein. A donation of $25 can help us provide up to 300 meals for those struggling with hunger. What are the organization’s goals for 2019? The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank continues to work toward our Bold Goal, which states, “By 2025, our collaborative network will provide access to enough nutritious food for everyone struggling with hunger in each of the 27 counties we serve, and we will convene and nurture partnerships to make progress toward ending hunger.” One of the ways we are working toward that goal in 2019 is with our “A Seat at the Table” initiative in York County. Since York is one of the counties in the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s service area with a large meal gap, the food bank formed a collaborative

What is the mission of Hospice & Community Care? How does the organization work to achieve its goals? Hospice & Community Care’s mission is to provide personalized care and comfort to help patients and families live better with serious illness through end of life. We provide different levels of care based on a patient’s symptoms and needs. Services include hospice care, palliative care, supportive care, and bereavement support. Hospice care is medical, emotional, and spiritual support for individuals and families who are coping with a life-limiting illness. Hospice care focuses on comfort for individuals of all ages with any serious illness who have weeks or months rather than years to live.
York County’s Second Annual Give Day Is May 3 Palliative care provides relief from pain and other difficult symptoms from illnesses ranging from cancer to heart and respiratory disease. Palliative Medicine Consultants’ physicians work with a patient’s doctor to treat symptoms, maintain function, and help patients to reach their goals. Supportive Care helps to prevent and manage the symptoms related to a patient’s illness. Grief support is provided during and after a loss of a loved one; this support is available to anyone in the community, regardless of whether they were served by Hospice & Community Care. Hospice & Community Care’s team of experienced nurses, aides, social workers, physicians, chaplains, and counselors work collaboratively to customize their approach to comfort care to meet each patient’s needs. In addition to The Ann B. Barshinger Hospice Center in York, Hospice & Community Care has The Essa Flory Center in Lancaster and The E.E. Manny Murry Center, home to The Bob Fryer & Family Inpatient Center and Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, in Mount Joy.

varieties will also be available. Heirloom varieties are cultivars preserved by gardeners and farmers who hand-select seed for a special trait displayed in the parent plant. Heirlooms were commonly grown during earlier periods in human history, but they are rarely used in modern, large-scale agriculture. Many heirloom vegetables keep their traits through open pollination, which means they are pollinated by insects or wind rather than human intervention. All plants are grown from nonGMO, non-treated seed using organic methods. Plants are grown by Horn Farm Center Incubator Farm Project and Regenerative Farming Internship Program participants. size when it moves to the adjacent 8,800-square-foot Hellam Township building. Township supervisors voted in March to construct a new facility on their Walnut Street campus and to allow the library to use their current municipal building. The future site for Kreutz Creek Library will feature dedicated children and teen program spaces, an open service area, additional computers, seating, and meeting spaces. Kaltreider-Benfer Library in
Red Lion will expand on the Charles Street side of its building and to the rear. Glass and windows will line the two new sides of the building, resulting in more natural lighting and improved lighting efficiencies. The 19-yearold structure will expand to 14,000 square feet and will be renovated and repurposed during the construction phase. It will feature dedicated children and teen program spaces and an expanded open service area. Lambert’s listening tour during
his first year as president in 2016 is what spurred the growth of these three libraries. During the tour, he met with library staff and community members at libraries throughout the county. A team of community volunteers is rallying support for the project, which includes matching dollars from state grants. To learn more about the “Imagine. Discover. Tide Softball, Baseball Teams Notch Wins with three strikeouts and one walk. One day later, the Crusaders were stymied by the Tide as they picked up an all-important league victory, 11-1. Catholic struck first, platting their only run in the first inning. Columbia tied the game in the bottom of the third inning and took control in the fourth inning when they scored seven runs. They ended the game with a three run fifth. Ryan Redding stayed hot, recording three hits with a pair of RBI’s while swiping two bags but he was not the only hot hitter. Zac Nikolaus also brought in a pair on two hits. David Hershey was perfect at the plate with two RBI’s. Collin McCarty, Michael Poole, and Mathew Gambler all pushed in one run each. As a team they batted .458 with 11 hits. Matthew McCleary led the way on the mound surrendering just three hits through five innings. He also walked two while striking out a pair while giving up one run making his era 1.40. Although the boys ended the week with a two game winning streak, they were coming off a two losses, a close 4-2 result against Garden Spot and getting shutout by Manheim Central. Their game against Lebanon Catholic was canceled due to weather. There is currently no makeup date. The game could help out the Crimson Tide as Lebanon Catholic is winless on the year so this could let them gain some ground in the standings. The Spartans out hit the Tide 9-6 and scored two runs in both the second and fourth innings while holding Columbia to single runs in the third and holding their seventh inning rally to one. Nikolaus recorded five strikeouts and walked two batters while the defense behind him committed three errors. The Barons needed just seven hits to score 10 runs in five innings. Hunter Hess fanned six Tide batters and came away with the two-hit victory. Matt Derr and Nate Resch both saw action on the hill for the Tide. As the section stands now Columbia is fourth with a 4-9 league record. They are ahead of Lancaster Mennonite and Lebanon Catholic while only a game and half out of third place currently held by Pequea Valley. The Tide looks to extend their streak this week and finish strong as the season is winding down with only five games remaining until playoffs. TRACK Unfortunately the boys’ and girls’ track and field teams did not fair too well this week as they are both are still searching for their first win of a season. In a matchup that saw two winless teams come together, Columbia faced off against Lancaster Mennonite but were taken down by a score of 78-22 while the girls dropped the meet 98-23. Anthony Palmisaro notched his first win of the year in the 800-meter with a time of 2:34.9. This earned them their second year, only second to the 21 runs they put up on Lebanon win of the season. Unfortunately it was not a section win Catholic at the beginning of the season. but a win is certainly a win. That offensive momentum, however, did not carry over Pitcher Emily Waugh led the way in the circle recording the following night as Columbia suffered a 4-0 loss against Lancaster Catholic. Before the bats came alive on Tuesday the Tide dropped a game on Monday to Manheim Central 10-0. They only recorded two hits all game paired with two errors. Waugh again saw action in the circle. She did record two strikeouts in the loss while her usual battery mate, Victoria Martinez, was behind the dish. It is a tough stretch for the girls right now as the season is winding down. They currently sit fourth in the standings in Section Four, ahead of winless Lebanon Catholic and only a pair of wins behind Lancaster Mennonite, so they could move into third place before all is said and done. They have scored 63 runs on 65 hits. BASEBALL The baseball team picked up not one, but two key wins last week, improving their record to 5-10 on the year. They also have a non-league meet on May 3rd featuring Solanco, Manheim Central, Donegal, and Eastern York.

EY Baseball Team on Three-Game Win Streak ing the win to the Bulldogs. Spotts collected a team high 15 digs with Bixler (12 digs) and Jake Kennell (nine digs) close behind. Bixler rounded out his game with 13 kills, five blocks and two aces while Kennell added two kills and two blocks. Reichard added a 15 assist, two dig and two kill game. TRACK The track and field teams enjoyed a double win on April 24th with the boy’s team topping Kennard-Dale 85-64 while the girl’s posted an 89-61 win. Demonte Martin led the way for the boy’s, posting three solo wins starting with his 15.2 in the 110H. He added a win in the 300H (42.9) and the high jump (5-6) to finish out his day. Bryce Currier picked up the only other solo track win, clocking a 55.8 in the 400m. The Golden Knights did take two of three relays with the 3200m team winning in 9:05.3 while the 1600m team used a 3:37.1 to claim victory. Logan Dodson picked up the first of three field wins with a top leap of 365 in the triple jump. Dylan Zurin covered 20-5 to win the long jump. Drake Brown posted the final win with a toss of 140-8 in the discus. The Lady Golden Knights managed 10 event wins in their victory with Emily Hoyer, Olivia McLain, Maya Stump and Sarah Moore combining for eight of those firsts. Hoyer turned in winning times of 13.5 in the 100m and 27.9 in the 200m. McLain took the 800m with a time of 2:35.6 a few events after winning the 1600m. While Hoyer and McLain were busy on the track, Stump picked up her two wins in the triple jump (31-3) and pole vault (7-0) while Moore posted the top marks in the discus (87-9) and shotput (25-9). Emily Smith gave Eastern a sweep of the throws with a toss of 96-3 in the javelin. He scattered six hits and allowed just a single sixth inning run to go with six strikeouts and no walks. The second win came one day later with Eastern York topping York Tech 10-6. Shimmel enjoyed another game leading the offense, this time with a two hit, four RBI day. He picked up his first RBI with a one run double in the second that made it a 1-1 game. Shimmel’s other RBIs came later in the game as Eastern was fighting off the York Tech charge. Big games from Emmit Silar, Jake Myers, Drew Dandridge and Justin Ranker at the plate more than covered Shimmel’s two run stay on the mound. Quinton McNew covered the final two innings and added five strikeouts to Dellinger’s three while surrendering just two hits. BOYS’ LACROSSE The boy’s lacrosse team suffered setbacks to Dallastown and Susquehannock to drop to 5-7 on the season. Goals from five different players allowed the Golden Knights to hang with Dallastown on April 18th but the Wildcats were able to pull away for the 16-10 win. Jake Crumling led the offense with three goals and an assist with Bryce Henise providing backup with a two goal, two assist game. Gage Barton and Cadeyn Michael also netted two goals. Jack Deerdorf accounted for the final tally while Kade Wiley stopped eight shots in the loss. Eastern York struggled to get their offense going in their clash with Susquehannock, allowing the Warriors to leave Wrightsville with a 17-2 victory. Wiley posted another eight save game with Michael and Rylan Emlet picking up one goal each. GIRLS’ LACROSSE The girls’ lacrosse team battled the same two opponents as the boy’s earning a split to sit at 7-4 on the season. The Lady Golden Knights were able to slip by Dallastown 11-7 on the 18th but lost a close one to Susquehannock on the 23rd by a 10-7 final. Addy Malone led the way against the Lady Wildcats by scoring seven of the team’s 11 goals. Abby Henise, Victoria Zerbe, Haley Holtzinger and Elli
Lippy split the remaining four goals evenly. Summer Breen’s nine saves earned the win. VOLLEYBALL A loss is typically not encouraging, especially while in midst of a winless season but the Eastern York boys’ volleyball team will take the silver lining that comes with back-to-back 3-1 losses regardless. The Golden Knights have been on the wrong side of all nine matches so far this season and the 3-1 setbacks to Berks Catholic and West York are the first two where Eastern York avoided the shutout. Eastern picked up their first set victory of the season on April 17th by taking the opening set against the Saints, 25-20. Catholic bounced back with three straight wins (25-16, 25-17 and 25-14) to collect the win. Brady Bixler continued his stellar senior season with 15 kills, 14 digs, five blocks and one ace. Fellow senior Nolan Reichard added 25 assists, 12 digs, six kills and two blocks. Devyn Sanders chipped in with 12 assists, five digs and two aces while Nick Spotts added 13 digs. Church To Present Mother/Child Banquet
WBUMC Plans Spring Fling, Special Service By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The first weekend in May will be a busy one at Washington Boro United Methodist Church (WBUMC), 1964 Water St., Washington Boro. A Spring Fling event will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and members of the Motorcycles for Jesus Ministry (MJM) will lead the worship service at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 5. The public is invited to participate in both events. The Spring Fling has been organized by the members of the missions and nurture support committee of the church, which includes Petra King, Tabetha Young, Kay Ott, Lori Gee, and pastor Carlene Wolf. The event will be held rain or shine and will feature vendors selling crafts and direct sales products. The church will have a flower stand, where geraniums and hanging baskets will be available for purchase. “When we had the garden sale, that’s what everyone wanted,” Tabetha reported after a conversation with her mother-in-law, Rita “Johnny” Young. Rita had helped to coordinate the garden sale, which had been a fundraiser for the construction of
WBUMC’s fellowship hall, and she will be overseeing the flowers for the Spring Fling. A children’s area will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Youngsters may engage in a variety of games and activities, and they may win prizes. Committee members will sell food and beverages during the event. They will offer egg sandwiches and coffee for breakfast and later fire up the grill and fryer to make burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches, tater tots, and french fries. Fresh fruit and baked goods will also be available. “I call these ladies the best cooks in Washington Boro, and so far, no one has objected to it,” Wolf commented. The proceeds from Spring Fling will be used by the missions and nurture support committee to support WBUMC’s outreach. The church contributes to a wide range of local and international organizations and causes, with donations totaling about $3,400 per year. “Our actual mission dollars that we send is not very much because we also do a number of free community meals, and (we) support our youth programs,”
Bethel Church will hold a mother/child banquet on Friday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m. at New Bridgeville Fire Hall, which is located at 2810 Furnace Road, Red Lion. Entertainment will be provided by The Dreamers, a quartet. The evening will include humor and a sing-along. The meal will consist of ham and turkey, corn, mashed potatoes,
Church Will Host Evening Of Music The missions and nurture support committee of Washington Boro United Methodist Church will host a Spring Fling event on May 4. Members of the Motorcycles for Jesus Ministry will lead the worship service on May 5. Wolf explained. MJM is well represented at WBUMC, with several church members having joined the outreach organization. Wolf related that MJM members will share their testimonies and offer special music, and one of them will give the message on May 5. A luncheon will be served following the service. Sunday school will precede the service at 9:15 a.m. Wolf noted that she likes to share the pulpit with folks who have a message to deliver, but
this is the first time MJM will be featured. “We’re changing it up,” Ott remarked. Guests are always welcome at WBUMC. On Sundays, a casual worship service is held at 8:15 a.m., and a blended service takes place at 10:30 a.m. Sunday school begins at 9:15 a.m. For more information about the Spring Fling or WBUMC, readers may call Wolf at 717-989-5979 or visit www. washingtonboroumc.com.

The Pinnacle Cup Team Match Play Tournament will take place on June 10 at Royal Manchester Golf Links in Mount Wolf. The event will benefit Hershey’s Children’s Miracle Network, as well as GEARS’ Camp Ladybug Summer Program, which offers experiences to youths like Briana. The 18th annual Pinnacle Cup Team Match Play Tournament will take place on Monday, June 10, at the Royal Manchester Golf Links, 5700 Board Road, Mount Wolf. In the past 17 years, more than 500 players from nine states have played in the event, which has raised more than $75,000 for the GEARS Camp Ladybug Summer Program and Hershey’s Children’s Miracle Network. The two groups have been the golf tournament’s main beneficiaries. “A match play tournament is very unusual, especially involving a charity event,” explained tournament director Clair Dale Treese. “In match play, every hole is important. The players like that ... they have to make a shot for their team. But by using a scramble method of play, some of the pressure is taken off the individual knowing they have a partner. We stress this is a friendly competition, but there is still an element of ‘butterflies’ when you really need to make a good golf shot.” Teams are paired based on their combined handicaps and indexed according to the United States Golf Association (USGA) rating of the course. Each team will play three matches of nine holes each for a total of 27 holes overall, and teams that qualify after the three initial matches will continue to the single-elimination championship match play rounds. In those matches, each team will play best-of-three holes. The final two teams will play to determine an overall tournament team champion. Matches will begin at 8:15 a.m., and lunch will be served at 2 p.m. The championship rounds will start at approximately 3:15 p.m.,
with the presentation of the trophy and prizes for the champions, along with the second- and thirdplace teams, at approximately 5 p.m. Team registration and sponsor forms are available by contacting Treese at 717-367-9144 or cdtreese@centurylink.net. The team entry, which must be postmarked by Wednesday, May 22, will include access to a practice range, the use of a cart, 27 holes of golf, prizes and the luncheon. There is an early registration discount for teams whose forms are postmarked before Friday, May 10. Proceeds will help Camp Ladybug offer its summer program to area residents with mental and/or physical challenges at no cost to the participants. GEARS conducts Camp Ladybug in conjunction with the Elizabethtown Area Services for Special Needs. This year’s camp will be held at the Elizabethtown Park Pavilion 5 from 9 a.m. to noon from Monday, June 17, to Friday, July 26, with no camp on Thursday, July 4. “Over the years, we have had the kids attend the tournament to meet the players and receive some golf instruction by the teaching professionals,” Treese explained. “We repeatedly tell the teams involved that it is a golf tournament, but they are here playing for the kids. We know the need never goes away, so we keep trying to do what we can to help.”
