Susquehanna Stage To Present “Pippin” hen Susquehanna Stage presents “Pippin” this month, be prepared for anything on stage. “Audiences can expect a broad spectrum of experiences while they watch this show,” said Gerson Malave, who plays the Leading Player. “You’ll see everything from magic on stage to life lessons.” “Pippin” follows the story of the title character and his search for meaning. “It’s about a guy who is trying to find his purpose in life,” explained Ryan Kimbark, who plays Pippin. “He wants to pursue his passion and figure out what he’s going to do and how he fits in.” Kayleigh Jarkowsky, who plays Catherine, said “Pippin” is full of action. “It’s going to be a very visual show,” she remarked. “You’re going to see a lot of magical moments. … You’re going to be on the edge of your seat the whole time.” “Pippin” is Susquehanna Stage’s first production of 2021, and it features a cast of 22 who range in age

There’s so much to see and do in the river towns of Marietta, Columbia and Wrightsville. That’s the message the Susquehanna National Heritage Area (NHA) wants to emphasize through its River Town Bucket List series. The series highlights stores, restaurants and places of interest in the towns. “We started this last year with a bucket list in Columbia, in partnership with our local parks and
recreation committee, as a way to offer activities during the pandemic,” recalled Hope Byers, director of Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, which, along with Zimmerman Center for Heritage, is part of the nonprofit Susquehanna NHA. “It was a selfguided tour, and it offered a bunch of things to do that were outside and were free. It caught on so well, we decided to take it under the Susquehanna NHA umbrella and make a list for all of our river towns.”

from 15 to 18, along with one young boy who is 7. For Maddie Ciliento, who plays Fastrada, the show offers a chance to perform for the first time since the pandemic canceled live theater. “The magical aspect of this show is what drew me to it,” she stated, adding that as a recent high school graduate, she hopes to pursue musical theater as a career. “When you come back to live theater, you don’t want your first show back to be boring. You want to make an impression, and this show does.” Ryan, who is a junior at Lancaster Mennonite High School, said even though he participated in some virtual shows over the past year, he’s excited to get back to performing in front of an audience. “I have missed live theater so much,” he noted. “There is an energy that comes from having a live audience, and that makes it so much fun.”

Bucket List from pg 1 Marietta is the first town in the spotlight. Its bucket list will run through the spring, wrapping up at the end of May. Columbia will be featured during the summer through Labor Day, and then Wrightsville will be highlighted in the fall, with the list series ending in November. Megan Salvatore, visitor services representative for Susquehanna NHA at Columbia Crossing, came up with the ideas on the lists. “I’m from Columbia, and I live in Marietta, so I knew where some of the cool things were,” she explained. “I knew this would be a fun way to showcase some of the unique places in our community.” Highlights of Marietta’s list include attending Marietta Day on Saturday, May 8, and visiting Shank’s Tavern to view high-water marks
from floods of the past. People who participate in the series can also win prizes. “We are partnering with the local business association in each town,” Byers stated. “For the first list, the Marietta Area Business Association has put together a prize pack valued at over $200, with gift cards and swag from downtown merchants. If you do just one item on the bucket list and you submit your information on our website, you’ll be entered to win.” Participants who complete 10 items and submit their information will receive a free ice cream cone from Mulberry Thrill Sweet Treats Café, located at the rear of 100 W. Market St., Marietta. It opens for the season on Sunday, May 9. “The really fun part about these

lists is it’s a mix of free things and things you have to pay for,” said Byers. “It’s an opportunity to support our local businesses if you can afford to do so, but if you can’t afford that, there are still adorable little things to do and see around town.” Salvatore noted that the bucket lists offer something for everyone. “Whether you’re a visitor or a resident, the bucket list is going to take you on an authentic journey through town,” she remarked. “You’ll get to experience the history and heritage of our area, visit local businesses and get a new appreciation for everything these river towns have to offer.” For more information on the River Town Bucket List series, visit www.susquehannaheritage.org and click on “Explore.” Paper copies of the lists are also available at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St.

be abuzz with activity when the church hosts its annual Spring Fling. The event will take place at the church, 404 Hellam St., on Saturday, May 8, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. “We will have food stands with homemade baked goods. We’ll have a table with used books, which will also have things like games and CDs for sale,” said Donna Ream, co-chair of the Spring Fling committee. “We have a rummage stand with clothing, shoes and handbags. Everything we sell is either made by or donated by our church and community members.” Spring Fling also includes a plant sale. “We will have lots and lots of plants and birdhouses or other yard decorations,” Ream noted. “The plant table is our biggest money maker.” Chicken corn soup will be sold by the quart or will be available by the bowl to enjoy on site. Additional food for sale includes coffee and doughnuts, as well as hamburgers and sausages. “We will have tables set up so people can sit outside and enjoy their meal,” Ream said. Spring Fling also includes an opportunity for community members to set up yard sale tables at
Proceeds from Spring Fling benefit church projects. “We are planning on using the money to replace carpeting in the sanctuary,” Ream stated. “We also hope to put some of it toward a roof repair we need.” The church is home to the community food bank and also houses Phoebe’s Closet, a community clothing bank. Local groups including Boy Scouts use the church space for meetings as well. The church holds services on Sunday mornings at 9 a.m. Ream said Hope United Methodist has been holding an annual Spring Fling event since the mid-2000s, although last year’s event was canceled due to COVID. She encourages anyone to stop by for homemade food and to pick up a bargain or two. Mask wearing and social distancing are recommended. “Come out for breakfast or lunch and do some shopping,” she said. “It’s a really nice time to get out and meet people or see people you haven’t seen in a long time. It’s just a fun day for the community.” For more information on Spring Fling or to preorder chicken corn soup, call the church at 717-252-2609.

The Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education (HFC), 4945 Horn Road, York, has announced a new initiative to plant 10,000 trees and raise $10,000 this spring. Named the Triple 10K Challenge, the Horn Farm Center’s tree planting and fundraising campaign is supported by $10,000 in matching funds and is part of Give Local York, which will occur on Friday, May 7. The HFC invites the greater York community to join the Triple 10K Challenge by donating and volunteering now through the end of May. As part of its regenerative focus, the HFC is working to transition several acres of farmland into multifunctional riparian buffer landscapes. This spring, in conjunction with Give Local York, the HFC will install a new multifunctional riparian buffer on 6 acres of farmland. By planting over 17,000 trees by 2022, the organization’s goal is to produce food and agroforestry products while protecting the health of local waterways from the Kreutz Creek to the Susquehanna and beyond. This work is supported by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership. Through a donor, contributions now through the end of May will be matched 100% up to $10,000. Community members can donate at any time at www.hornfarm center.org/donate. Give Local York will start at 12:01 a.m. on May 7. HFC will accept donations throughout the day until midnight at www.givelocalyork.org/organiza tions/horn-farm-center-for -agricultural-education. In addition, supporters are invited to visit the HFC from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for its Triple 10K Challenge open house and tree planting event. Visitors are invited to attend and to help plant trees. Two farm tours will be offered at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Tree planting participants are asked to bring a mask, a water bottle, and gardening gloves. Light refreshments will be provided. Visitors are also welcome to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on the farm. For more information, to donate, and to register for the Triple 10K Challenge open house and tree planting event, visit www.hornfarmcenter.org/give -local-york/.

York County Libraries will participate in this year’s Give Local York. The 24-hour online event will be held from midnight through 11:59:59 p.m. on Friday, May 7. According to event organizers, community members came together last year to raise $3.5 million for more than 300 local nonprofits, including York County Libraries. According to York County Libraries president Robert F. Lambert, services extend far beyond the four walls of the library. During the pandemic, York County Libraries shifted to enhance digital resources and create virtual story time programs to continue meeting community needs. During the first three months alone, York County Libraries renewed and issued over 1,000 new library cards to residents, providing free access to 80 reference databases and over 80,000 digital books and materials. On May 7, several York County Libraries member libraries will host special activities online, outside, and off-site. The Friends of the Kreutz Creek Library will host an event at Hallamshire Family Restaurant, 480 W. Market St., Hallam, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friends members will share details about the library’s programming and resources as well as the
new library now under construction. A Hair Raising Fun Craft will be available at Kreutz Creek Library, 66 Walnut Springs Road, Hellam, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Community members may stop by the library to pick up a grab-and-go craft. past, we’ve held Give Local York during First Friday in York, and we did a street fair, but we are not quite ready to resume that just yet, so this is a way we can control attendance and host a smaller-scale event,” she stated. “The public will still be able to see what’s going on through our livestream from 7 to 9 p.m., and we’ll have nonprofits doing presentations and demonstrations.” The Showcase will conclude with an in-park fireworks show at 9 p.m. that will also be livestreamed, followed by a livestreamed concert from 9 to 11:55 p.m., before the grand total of the fundraiser is revealed at midnight on Saturday, May 8. The goal for the event is for 13,500 donors to make a gift, Given said, noting that since its founding, GLY has raised more than $8 million for local nonprofits from more than 15,000 donors. “We have so many nonprofits here in York County who are doing amazing work, from food insecurity to animals, veterans’ services, early childhood education,” she emphasized. “Anything you are passionate about, there is a nonprofit out there working hard to support the cause. And even if you may not have directly benefited from an organization, you know someone who has, either a family member or a friend or someone else in the community. We want to shine a light on these organizations and remind everyone that this is what makes our community great.” For more information on Give Local York or to give on May 7, visit www.givelocalyork.org.

In addition to supporting a particular nonprofit, participants will have the option of donating to two COVIDspecific funds, said Meagan Given, executive director of the White Rose Leadership Institute, who oversees the fundraiser. “Our COVID-19 Community Fund is a way for people to really support all of the nonprofits,” Given explained. “Money raised through that fund will be shared evenly by participating nonprofits … Many have been hit really hard this past year.” The other COVID-specific fund option is the York City Independent Restaurant Association. “Everyone is aware that the hospitality industry was hit very hard this past year also,” Given noted. “(The association) is comprised of restaurants located in York city who do events together such as Restaurant Week. This fund is another way to make sure the restaurants we love can stick around.” Last year, Give Local York had to pivot to a livestreamed format, and the switch was so successful, organizers decided to include it again this year, Given said. GLY Live will be presented by York Traditions Bank and will showcase total dollars raised, top participating organizations, leaderboard updates and more. GLY Live will go live at the top of every hour from midnight to 2 a.m. and then again from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on May 7. Animal Shelter To Kick Off Concert Series BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Cuddly kittens, food and live music. If this sounds like your “purrfect” night, you’re in luck. The Columbia Animal Shelter will kick off its Summer Concert Series with a performance by Stu Huggens on Saturday, May 15. The concert will run from 5 to 8 p.m. at the shelter, 265 S. 10th St. “We started doing concerts last summer as a way to offer something when not much else was going on,” recalled Tammy Loughlin, executive director of the shelter. “We have a nice open field and a stage. There’s plenty of room for people to come with their own lawn chairs and spread out. It was well received last summer, so we decided to do it again this summer.” The concerts are free and will be offered on the third Saturday of each month through Oct. 16. “We encourage donations if you’re able to support us, and we also have a 50/50 (drawing),” Loughlin said. “We’ll also have food trucks with food available for purchase.” G’s Concessions and Scoop O Dough will sell concessions during the May 15 concert. Proceeds from the event will benefit the shelter, which opened in 2019 and houses cats and dogs

looking for their forever homes. “We have a low-cost spay and neuter clinic every Monday, and we’re working toward adding a dental unit,” Loughlin stated. “We are also working toward purchasing X-ray equipment.” This month’s concert is happening right in the middle of kitten season, she noted, adding that the shelter is always in need of items to support the cats. “We have a wish list on our website. … If anyone wants to bring something off that list when they come to the concert, that’s wonderful,” she remarked. Tours of the shelter will also be offered during the concert series, allowing visitors to meet the cats and dogs up for adoption. Additional concerts in the series are RiverRat Jenkins on June 19; Tropical Soul on July 17; The Werks on Aug. 21; Stu Huggens on Sept. 18; and Blue Voodoo on Oct. 16. “It’s just good, clean fun,” Loughlin said of the concert series. “It’s a fun way to get out, enjoy some great music and spend some time with your family.” For more information on the concerts or the Columbia Animal Shelter, visit https://columbiaanimal shelter.com or search for “Columbia Animal Shelter” on Facebook.

14th Annual EPC Golf Outing Will Benefit Good Samaritan Services In 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time. Nineteen years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lan-
caster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing. “Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.” Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support programs; provided nearly

$90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and helped 53 individuals and families successfully complete their programs and find stable housing. “I get to meet individuals in our shelter and hear their stories,” said Caprell. “They’re all such wonderful, beautiful people. There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth. Anyone can become homeless at the drop of a dime.” Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 14th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 11, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meals, beverages, and snacks will be provided, and participants will have chances to win prizes throughout the golf
course. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS. “With COVID, people have been hit really hard this past year, so there are many people in need of the services that GSS offers,” noted EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “You could be helping a family member or your neighbor.” Caprell said one of the biggest reasons to attend the event is that events such as the EPC Golf Outing are important to the funding of GSS. “This event can help hundreds and hundreds of people and provide them with a safe place to call home,” she emphasized.
