Lions Club will offer Music in the Park

Forsome free family entertainment, head out to Locust Street Park, 550 Locust St., Columbia, for a series of concerts offered by the Columbia Lions Club. All concerts will be held from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. in the gazebo in the park.

The series will kick off on Friday, May 19, with a performance by Central City Orchestra. Playing for the first time in Columbia, the 10-piece group specializes in high-energy dance songs from the past and the hits of today. On Friday, June 16, The Nomads will entertain. The group performs ’50s and ’60s classic rock ’n’ roll. The Maxwell Project will play on Friday, July 21. The group’s shows mix R&B with funk and soul and include an Earth, Wind and Fire tribute set. The concert series will wrap up on Friday, Aug. 18, with the Mama Tried Band. The group performs a variety of dance music.

Food will be available for purchase at each concert, said Phil Kresge, who

is co-chairing the Columbia Lions Club’s Music in the Park series with Paul Resch. The lineup will include Scoops Ice Cream & Grille, Maine Course Mobile, Authentic Italian Ice and Half Nuts Popcorn Co.

As Kresge explained, the Lions Club members were looking for ways to put the gazebo in the park to use when the group came up with the idea of monthly summer concerts. “(It’s) a way of both using the gazebo and bringing the community together to enjoy the gazebo, the beautiful park, some yummy treats and an evening of great music,” he stated. He noted that the Lions were hoping to get community sponsors to fund the concerts so that the music series would not impact funds the club uses for other community projects and so that the concerts could be offered free of charge. He notes that the 2023 summer concerts are made possible through the support of the following sponsors: the Columbia Borough Fire Department (in memory of

Bum Klinestever), Columbia Fraternal Association, Columbia-Middletown Elks 1074, Mountz & Kreiser Law Office, McCarty’s Seal Coating, Columbia American Legion, Chickies Rock Moose 307, The Medicine Shoppe, Sahd Metal Recycling, Columbia Foresters of America, The Knights of Columbus, Columbia Kettle Works, Wrightsville Social Club, Kleen-Rite Corp., Catholic War Veterans, McElhenneys Notary, Scoops Ice Cream & Grille and the Sunsnappers.

Kresge noted that all concerts are weather permitting, and there are no weather make-up dates.

“Our concerts are for all ages and free,” he remarked. “If you haven’t been to one of our concerts, you really should come check it out. It’s a fantastic way to start a summer weekend.”

“Shrek” teaches message of staying true to yourself

“This show is a must-see with incredible dancing and singing that will entertain all ages,” said Elliott Evans, who plays the title character in “Shrek the Musical Jr.” The show will be performed at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, May 12, 13, 19 and 20, as well as at 2 p.m. on May 20 and Sundays, May 14 and 21.

“Shrek” tells the story of an ogre who longs to live a solitary life in his

swamp but is sent on a mission to rescue a princess, explained Cienna Kamanda, who plays Donkey. “This show follows Shrek on his journey to get his swamp back from Lord Farquaad,” Cienna shared. “Along the way, he meets the talkative and energetic Donkey and the bold and spunky Princess Fiona.”

Annika Locke, who portrays Princess Fiona, noted that the junior version of the show is a slightly shorter take on the original musical. “The only big difference is there are fewer songs, and in general, the script overall is shorter,” she

Artists invited to enter contest

Penn State Extension’s Master Watershed Stewards in York, in partnership with the City of York, the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association and the Watershed Alliance of York, are launching the 2023 Street 2 Creek Storm Drain Art Contest, a project to raise awareness about stormwater runoff and the negative impacts it can have on waterways. Each painted storm drain will contain an environmental message connecting stormwater runoff, storm drains, and water pollution.

Art submissions are currently being accepted from artists age 14 and up who currently reside in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The deadline for entries is Monday, May 22. Guidelines for submitting art can be found at www.street2creek.org.

A panel of local judges will judge the artworks, and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three artists. The winning artists will complete

their art at three select storm drains in downtown York. The new paintings will become part of the 18 storm drain murals that can be found between the Codorus Creek and the Royal Square

District.

This project was funded by York Water Company, S.H.A.R.E., the Street 2 Creek partners, and Cornerstone Barber and Shave Parlour.

said. She emphasized that the shorter version does not dampen the energy on stage.

“You can expect a high-energy show - funny scenes that will hopefully make you laugh, catchy songs and a positive message,” she remarked.

Cienna shared that despite the show’s hijinks, its message is a serious one. “It’s about being yourself and loving who you are,” she noted, adding that the cast, which includes 30 students ages 10 to 18, is a talented bunch. “Our cast has so many talented triple threats. The fairytale creatures have all given their character specific voices and traits, and the entire ensemble is absolutely phenomenal.”

The cast members encourage people to come and see the show to enjoy an uplifting message and a visually entertaining performance on stage. “‘Shrek the Musical Jr.’ is funny, heartfelt and upbeat, all at the same time,” Cienna said. Garden party high tea set

On Saturday, May 13, Timbrel Chyatee, a Lancaster minority business owner, will launch her latest endeavor, Chyatee Foundation, which will aim to help empower woman entrepreneurs. The theme of the event, “Chyatee’s Bridgerton Soiree,” was inspired by the leading female Indian stars in the second season of the Netflix series “Bridgerton.” The event will feature a garden party high tea and fashion show at Pineapple Manor, 417 Manor Ave., Millersville, from 1 to 4 p.m. The Chyatee Foundation’s mission is to provide honest

and reliable tools, mentorship, and support to women of color in business, both locally and beyond. The tea will be the organization’s first fundraising event and will seek to celebrate and empower women. Proceeds will provide funds for a scholarship for women in business, as well as support the mothers and women in Chyatee’s Indian facility.

For tickets to the high tea, visit www.eventbrite.com and search for Chyatee’s Bridgerton Soiree. For more information on Chyatee and the Chyatee Foundation, visit www.chyatee.com.
